I remember my Mum and I finding coke bottles filled with urine in my brother's room only last year... He was 17! oh and mouldy milk that had been left in his room. It stunk. That's not nice at all! I think I might be a bit hard on mine in that case since they're nothing like the monsters in that article, thankfully.

If you're feeling adventurous then there is the fruit and veg market out past global village and academic city exit. Quality is highly variable and you need to be picky but it's fun for a change and very cheap. Other than that I think Tallybait has it nailed down!

Depends on what you want really. If you're a young person (or young at heart) and want a social life, it's not ideal at all. If you're not so interested in that or want a quiet life, it's fine.

Sorry to hijack, does NAS have pastoral care in both primary and secondary, most schools have a social well being program that is part of the curriculum - some schools call this global citizenship, choices, etc. Yes they do.

If it's a short trip, with a good bus company to a pro-active school then I think it's OK personally. If any of those don't hold true...then definately not.

Loving The Sun, thanks for the total sympathy you expressed for those of us struggling with kids on the spectrum. You have every right to rant shamelessly about measles vaccinations or lack of, but it's a bit inconsiderate to hijack a thread on autism instead of adding to the many current anti-vaccine threads or starting up new anti-vaccine threads with relevant titles. ASD is a real challenge for any family dealing with it and just shouting "what about measles injections?" at us isn't a particularly helpful contribution and does feel as though you're trying to sideline the many issues we face on a daily basis. Stix, sorry I don't know how to add this as a link, but the list of possible causes is huge, so please google it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_autism If you wish to paint me as the bad guy; "hijacking" "rant" "sideline" "shouting" that is your prerogative of course. My first post wasn't aimed at you or anyone else (as you hadn't in fact posted when I wrote it) with a child with ASD. Clearly not. I agree a thread about dealing with Autism is merited but since this was about its causes (as per the OP) then a response which expressed frustration at the harmful rubbish spouted (which oddly enough reappears on this very thread!) about its causes by the MMR=Autism brigade was hardly totally incongrous and was indeed quite in context Measels is on the rise in the UAE and awareness is not a bad thing. In no way does this equate, or even hint at, an attack on those people who live with an child or relative with ASD. In no way does it sideline them or the many genuine issues that they face. But if you wish to make it into that, I can't stop you. edited by lovingthesun on 06/03/2015

I do hope this isn't being hijacked for another measles rant thread already. Undoubtedly it often does run in families but 98% autism due to genes seems a bit on the high side to me. Convenient for any government wishing to divert attention and research funding away from other possible causes of autism. Oh I'll rant alright and shamelessly so. The anti-vaccination brigade are endangering the lives of children; who wouldn't rant about that? Perhaps they (the plague bearers) are more at fault for hijacking autism for THIER own ill-informed agenda. Or perhaps they're too busy with their Crystal Healing mumbo jumbo to give a **** about anyone else's child. edited by lovingthesun on 05/03/2015

It stands for Qualified Teacher Status. I believe that it means another year of studies in the UK. I don't know anything further about it because I knew that I would never be teaching in the UK when I decided to do the PGCE with The U of Sunderland. Ahhh, thank you. Just spent a few minutes reading about this online. So a PGCE doesn't make you a UK qualified teacher by itself. I really wasn't aware of this but I'm only at the beginning of my, possible, journey in this direction. The idea that to get QTS you need to spend a year being mentored in the UK seems like a good method of quality control at least?

You can teach here and in many other countries with the PGCE from the University of Sunderland. I know because I have it. However, if you want to teach in the UK, it is not enough. You would need to obtain QTS status there. Sorry, what is QTS? I've been thinking about this one day for myself but it seems a bit of a labyrinth!

The school does have a bus service but im not sure if it goes to Victory Heights. To drive it would take a maximum of 30minutes in the morning i think. I think it might be quite a bit longer than that as the junction is always horrendous.

NAS did it too a few weeks ago. They told the little ones it was a hiding game which seemed to reduce any "scare" factor they might have picked up on. I think it's a good idea to do it but also I can't even think about it ever being needed, it's just too frightening. Better to have done the drill though I suppose.

Not a recipie as such but an idea that really helped with mine and the dreaded "lunch box full of healthy stuff comes back uneaten" scenario I let the children join in making them the night before, they choose what goes in (within healthy boundaries I set) and tailor them to their own taste. It does mean that some of mine have a little more carrot and a little less cucumber or vise/versa but it has meant that the amount that gets eaten has really shot up. Not prefect I know as they have to be in the fridge overnight and sometimes I don't get round to it but most of the time it works well for us. edited by lovingthesun on 24/02/2015

I have bought some wall mounted photo shelves from IKEA and need to get it fixed. Quotation of "Jim will fix it" is very high for the work. Can anyone recommend someone for this work , someone who won't charge a fortune? Thank You Can't help but out of curiosity, what was the quote? Around 600 Dhs for about 6 shelves -that needed only 2x drilling each. Total Price of all the shelves is 1/3 of this :-( I can't believe they quoted you that. They are 250 dhs per hour. Do they think it will take more than 2 h? I would phone and ask again. They might have misunderstood what you wanted done. I used them a few times and although a bit pricey, nothing outrageous. Tend to agree...not the cheapest but when ever i've used them they've been very good.

She likes both! But she is edging more towards DESC. Do the children come from far and wide to DESC? I quite like the idea of local school, local friends etc. Thanks. I wouldn't worry too much about this point as most children in Dubai are driven (car or bus) to school. I would tend to put overall travel time/distance as a priority as the driving conditions here are not always the best and traffic can be a nightmare.

If you use the address www.google.com/ncr and set that as your home page address it will always be in English. NCR stands for no country region which means it doesn't default to your location but to the standard google.com home page which is in English. You are an angel!

In terms of rent they seem to want single cheques (which is incredible in my opinion) but a couple of people I know are paying with three cheques. I cannot understand why the rental market has swallowed single cheques...it's the thing that most annoys me about Dxb. The landlord has no reason to do any maintainance swiftly at all (and often the tenant ends up paying for it!) Just a mini rant...sorry!

She had spotting for two cycles, semi-ignored the first lot (not saying that's right, just repeating what she did and she wishes she hadn't) and then when it continued into second cycle went to the doctors. It was a lady doctor who took her seriously. Had blood tests, ultrasound and then biopsy in short order and it confirmed a malignancy which is contained within the ovary itself so she should be (fingers crossed for her!) one of the lucky ones. I'm not an expert so please don't take this as medical advise at all...the links above are no doubt better!

Why would anyone bother having more than one username? To agree with themselves? Disagree with themselves? Laugh at their own jokes? And how did people who enjoy such things amuse themselves before the internet? By spreading malicious gossip? Poison pen letters? Gin from 10am? That is a lot of questions but I find such seemingly pointless duplicity totally bizarre. We've seen quite a few examples of it of late though (i'm thinking of some threads which are now so heavily moderated that it's hard to make head nor tail of them so many "fake" posters have been removed). I can only agree in general but I do detect quite a lot of people who seem to want to create spam. The again I learned the word "spambot" a couple of weeks a go here so who's to say they're actually people! On the other hand Chezmoi is clearly not one of these people and in regards of her point she was nothing but honest and quite reasonable I think....hasn't this gone on long enough?

School places in kg can be very hard to find in good all through schools. You will definitely want all your children in one school (travel time, traffic, after school activities etc.)? It's often worth calling around schools to see what they have, though waiting lists can be quite common. Which School Advisor is a very useful site for school hunting and comparisons. edited by lovingthesun on 08/02/2015
