Hi, My daughter has a social and communication disorder and needs to be under an early intervention program. 2 of the schools that her doctor recommend have limited seats and will not take anymore students with her needs for now and one is really expensive. any other recommendation please :-) thanks in advance!

I find it strange that your doctor did a belly scan at 8 weeks. No proper doctor would do a belly scan at 8 weeks as you will never see anything. It always has to be an internal one at 8 weeks. Perhaps use this time to look for a better doctor? You dont want to go through your whole pregnancy with a doctor who is clueless and even worse to deliver your baby too. Im actually not thinking of not going back to her and I have another schedule with another doctor. I hope Ill be comfortable with this new one. Thanks

Yes it was only a belly scan in the doc's clinic. I'll have my "proper" ultra sound with the radiology dept by 7 July. so praying that all will be fine. Maybe im just overeacting with this situation. Thanks Ladies for your wonderful responses.

Lovingwife, I had an anxiety problem as well and was hesitant to go through an internal scan at 6 weeks. However, the nurse/technician really comforted me, helped me relax and used lots of lubrication before she inserted the probe. I must admit it wasnt bad at all. DO talk to your technician, tell her you have an anxiety issue...apparently they face many women like us and know how to deal with us:) I agree that you do not need internal scans and the baby's heartbeat can be traced on a regular ultrasound from 8 weeks onwards. However, based on my experience, I would say that just go ahead with it confidently. At the end of 9 months, you will have to push a baby out (which I promise isn't as bad as most of our anxious types believe) and these small internal scans will get you confident about the final deal. Trust me. Good luck! Probably I was also not prepared that time and it heightened my anxiety but im still hopeful that Ill be able to do it someday. Thanks a lot!

I delivered my baby 7 weeks ago and for my whole pregnancy i never had an internal scan, only an ultrasound done through my stomach. I went to NMC for the majority of my pregnancy but changed to Al Garhoud right at the end and delivered there. Had my final check up with OBGYN the other day and it was the first time i had an internal scan to check if my uterus was back to normal which it was thank God. Not the nicest thing in the world, those internal scans :( Thanks MrsA, I will stick to my OB as she had done my surgery before (had a cysts in my ovary). But I got cleared with her that I dont want to have internal scan and she respected it.

RE the anxiety, check with your dr and see if you can take a broad spectrum vitamin B - specifically Neubiron. Vitamin B is proven to help with anxiety. I'm on it and it has helped me - more than the anti depressants. I also take folic acid and fish oil, which are proven to help with depression. Ask your dr, cant hurt to try. ill do :-)

Absolutely not necessary if it's just a routine first visit. A lot of OBs here seem to love doing scans, apart from at 12 weeks and 20 weeks which are both external scans, they really aren't needed in a normal pregnancy. Many women have no scans at all with no problems. My OB is Dr Tazyeen Faisal, I've always been really happy with her. I had a traumatic first delivery in the UK and didn't want a doctor going near me with my second baby. She was very understanding and I had no internal anything for my first two pregnancies with her, she also kept external scanning to a minimum at my request. Unfortunately, both her clinic and Medgate does not do direct billing for my insurance -AXA. :-(

Yes, I am seeing a psych at the moment, although i have to postpone it now to focus on my pregnancy. What are you referring to by "focus no my pregnancy?" I strongly recommend you continue to obtain treatment. You will need internal exams and to be "checked" for dilatation manually later in your pregnancy. If you have complications, there may be a need for internal scans, too. Yes, having a doctor you are comfortable with is part of the equation, but it sounds like there are other issues beyond just being comfortable with your care provider that its best to address so you can enjoy your pregnancy. I really have a very complicated condition, and of course, ill also check with my psychiatrist the best possible way on how to proceed with this.

I understand your fears, I also have a terrible fear of pap smears. I once had one in Latifa Hospital and they used the disposable plastic speculum, and it had a sharp ridge down the side (i guess from the moulding). It cut me as she pulled it out and she did not care. This intensified my fear and I could end up with my hips a foot off the bed in fear....until.... My lovely doctor told me not to avoid the things that I am afraid from. She talked me through a pap smear and did it really slowly, all the while explaining which muscles to relax to avoid being 'pinched' etc and since then (that was many moons ago) she has succeeded in doing a Lleitz procedure on me, under local anesthetic without any fear at all. She did the same with the internal scan, she guided me through it, and it was really easy. Do not avoid it, just go with a doctor who understands. Hi PowerPuffMom, yes ill try to find another OB. I already had one recommendation so I will see if I can book an appointment and if my insurance is affiliated with their clinic. -thanks

Congratulations : - ) I also agree with Daza and others. I did have a very early internal scan (6 wks I think) at my own request, mainly because we didn't believe it! But it is not 'standard' as far as I know, from what my sister in the UK told me (she has 3 kids) you usually only have a scan (external) at 12 wks and 20 wks there if everything is progressing OK. It is so important that you have trust in your OB and feel comfortable with them so probably you need to find a different one. Not wishing to get personal though, but have you tried to overcome your anxiety, maybe with counselling, hypnotherapy, breathing techniques or something similar? You are going to need internal procedures at times even after the pregnancy, like smear tests etc. And it would obviously help you in your personal life too. Good luck. Hi Beany, Yes, I am seeing a psych at the moment, although i have to postpone it now to focus on my pregnancy.

Hi No idea if this is helpful or not. I had an internal scan when I was 9/10 weeks pregnant in the UK. They tried to scan me on my belly, but after about 10 mins of hard pushing she couldn't find the baby. She decided to scan me internally. Uncomfortable yes but felt much better than on the belly. My uterus was tipped back so she had problems with scanning the belly. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that if your very early in the pregnancy, it's better to be scanned internally so they can see the baby/sac etc. x Thanks dreamc. Problem is that I have anxiety disorder and if I can do without internal then it would also be healthy for me.

Hi Daza, It was my first check up - i thought that was really necessary but when i read some posts here today, most of them did not even had to do it. Would you mind letting me know who your OB is? Im still in my 5 weeks, i think its not too late to check other options. thanks a lot - its a relief to know that internal scan is not really a must if all is normal.
