There's a British midwife at Dubai London Clinic, her name is Louise and she is quite lovely. I delivered at City Hospital but continued seeing Louise throughout my pregnancy and have been seeing her since my DD was born. All the best!

Hi Ladies I am about to hire a nanny/maid for the very first time. It is a live out position and I am aware that you normally have to pay a slightly higher salary to cover rent and travel. In fact, one agency I called told me that this should be about 700dhs per month. Now, I have found a Philippina lady who has several years experience in the UAE and is a qualified teacher with childcare training and first aid training. She is a standout candidate based on the range of interviews I have undertaken. However, she is asking for what seems to be a high salary - 3,500dhs per month. She would like an airfare on top of this. I'm quite impressed with her and am happy to pay but hubby is of the view we are being ripped off. I'd be keen to hear other feedback bearing in mind this is a live out position, the lady is in her forties and has references. TIA

Thanks for all your replies, tips and advice ladies. It's a great support to know we are not the only ones dealing with this and I am sure we won't be the last! DD has been on the meds for a week, she is on a moderate dose for the moment. I have noticed that she has stopped thrashing her arms and legs during and after feeds and no longer arches her back whilst screaming in pain. She still wriggles but doesn't go purple in the face as much as she did before the meds. Hopefully this is a sign that the meds are working. She is still in some distress after selected feeds - usually every second feed actually. In addition, I have gone back to Avent anti-colic bottles and teats (can't breast feed due to complications) after using NUK orthodontic teats for slow release. As she is now 4 weeks old, I could see she was getting terribly frustrated with the slow flowing NUK teats and seems much happier on the Avent ones again. But initially the Avent ones were causing her to gulp down too much air. I've also been using Infacol on the doc's advice. DD is now passing gas more frequently than she used to. The miracle swaddle from Mothercare is super - DD is much calmer when sleeping and when she awakens we can hear her moving about for a few minutes but then she usually gives up and goes back to sleep. Last night she fed at 10pm and settled instantly, woke up at 2am on the dot and took an hour to settle and was up again at 6.30am - if only every night could be so good! As for sleeping, Kiwi is right - the more sleep a reflux baby has, the better. If I let her sleep when she wants as often as she wants then she ends up sticking to the evening feed and sleep times. A pacifier also helps to complete the digestion process. All the best to the other mummies dealing with reflux babies : )

I have just got off the phone from City again and after doing a search on Dr Ibrahim and all I read was good things I have an appoinement with him at the end of Aug. They had booked me with the other lady but could not find any information on her am sure she is great but you always feel happier when you have good feedback. So now I need to try and sort insurance with Adnic if not then I guess its packages instead and hope there are no complications. Thanks for you all your help :) I am sure I will have loads more questions......... I also got insurance with ADNIC after finding out my employer's insurance did not cover maternity (GRRR). Although I paid a huge premium, it was well worth it. All my visits with Dr. Ibrahim were covered as was the delivery. I had to pay for the epidural because it is not covered under direct billing but hope to get it reimbursed. I also suffered some minor complications post delivery and again, all of this was covered by ADNIC. All the best fullofdreams : )

Thank you for the information I phoned city yesterday to book an apointment with Dr Elsa but I cant get one until Nov which will be to late :( so now back to square one. Please any other recommendations from the other doctors at city please or any other hospital. Thank you all so much I delivered at City Hospital 3 weeks ago and highly recommend Dr. Ibrahim. He is very caring, gentle, calm and generally a very nice person. I commenced seeing him at about week 20. On the day of delivery, the hospital was extremely busy with emergency births and no matter how many times Dr. Ibrahim was called away to assist in other deliveries, he stayed with me the whole time as I was "his patient". Post delivery, Dr. Ibrahim visited me on a daily basis, sometimes twice a day. He even came in on his days off to check in on me. As for the City experience, I could not fault the hospital or staff one bit. Yes, there are some challenging nurses, particularly when language is a barrier, but overall I found everyone to be caring and helpful. A range of specialists visited me post delivery including a physio and lactation consultant.

I've been following this thread actively as I have a three week old and the advice from mums is invaluable. Up until two nights ago, DD was falling asleep promptly by 10.30pm and waking once in the night before stirring at about 6am. Then her appetite increased and I assume she is going through a growth spurt which is bringing colic on. I am bottle feeding her so I know she is eating well. Kie, my baby slept poorly last night and almost 100% following the times you mention in your post below. She was also thrashing her arms and legs around. I had the worst sleep last night since the baby was born and am at a loss to explain why all of a sudden her routine would change. She protested when I swaddled her whereas normally she would calm down quite quickly. She also spent the night making grunting noises and smacking her lips but there was no possetting. She seemed to calm down this morning after doing a poop so it's possible that she had tummy problems at night.

We had a referral to a general surgeon, our pediatrician was actually reluctant to send us as he said it wasn't affecting breastfeeding since my son had gained weight well, given that I had just told him that my nipples were bleeding I was close to strangling him but managed to remain composed enough to insist on the referral. ;) It was hard to watch but my son only really cried when they sprayed the anesthetic spray, it was obvious the snip itself wasn't painful and I could nurse him straight after, it did still take him quite a while to learn how to latch properly but we got there, nipple shields are a good idea if your baby won't latch at all or keeps popping off, mine just clamped down at got on with it :( Good to know : ) DS is latching on fine but she is a slow sucker and gets frustrated which causes her a lot of distress not to mention going hungry : ( As a result, I don't produce enough milk!

Ladies, thanks for your advice - all your points make sense. DD also has tongue tie Muzza1 so I have been bottle feeding. I think I had a mini break through last night but I don't want to jinx myself .. basically I decided to switch from feeding first followed by nappy changing to the other way around. At 10pm, I unswaddled her very gently and quietly and took her immediately to change her nappy. She was barely awake and by the time she started stirring and whimpering, it was time to feed. After burping, I swaddled her again and put her down in her cot. With a bit of gentle tapping on the back and a pacifier, she fell asleep within five minutes and was up at 2am where the same process was repeated. Like clock work, she started stirring at 6am. She didn't cry during the night but did whimper. Hubby is refreshed, I feel good and bub is more alert this morning and seems content : ) I hope this lasts!!!!

Get it snipped ASAP, as in tomorrow, some doctors will tell you it doesn't affect breastfeeding but there is good evidence in recent medical journals that it does. My son's was done at around 2 weeks old and it was such a simple procedure, a local anesthetic spray and a few drops of blood vs a general anesthetic and much more pain if it is done when they are older and the area has vascularized. You can put her to the breast immediately afterwards and work with the LC to teach her how to suck on the breast, you might want to have a look at some info I posted recently about a method of bottle feeding to encourage breastfeeding. http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=152438 Thanks kiwispiers - I agree better to be done sooner rather than later : )

All the best CK1 - you are in very good hands. Dr Ibrahim is fantastic. I forgot to mention that he had to perform an episiotomy - even though it was my preference not to - and he later apologised and explained in detail why he did so and the consequences of not doing so. My stitching was perfect and four/five days after delivery, the side effects were gone. jc2010 - you have to take your own hair dryer. Like you, I had hoped to take lots of photos and wanted to look my best. However, this will entirely depend on your disposition after the delivery. FYI - there are no electricity outlets in or immediately next to the bathroom so take an extension cord!

M: that is great to hear as I don't have a gown here and haven't seen any good ones in the shops. Did they give you slippers? The less to pack the better! Also how did you find the nursing staff and after care? Hi CK1 - yes, you also get slippers! As for care, I could not fault the hospital one bit and would gladly return to have another baby there. The midwives on the labour ward were the most caring I had ever encountered. Suzanne was the midwife who assisted Dr. Ibrahim in my delivery and she is an absolute god-send. She is one of the most caring and supportive women I have ever met and she pre-empted every concern, every pain and every emotion I was experiencing. She was like a best friend and coach at the same time. Once the delivery was made, I was returned to my room where various nurses and midwives dropped in to check in on me and baby. I was later moved to the maternity ward for recovery. I suffered significant blood loss and had three transfusions. Again, nurses and midwives were great although extremely busy - the ward was full but I never waited more than 2 minutes for someone to arrive if I pressed the buzzer. Dr. Ibrahim visited me every day and sometimes more than once to check in on me. A number of other specialists including physio Juanita and lactation consultant Sameera dropped in to provide advice and offer longer term assistance. To be quite honest, I was sad to leave the hospital! Feel free to ask any other queries and all the best : )

Hi - I tried to enroll in classes but found the ones outside of business hours to be fully booked well in advance. Instead, I downloaded a pre-natal pilates video and found it to be really helpful and convenient. Having delivered just last week, I can confirm the strengthening exercises really helped during and post delivery. The DVD is called 10 minute pre-natal pilates.

I delivered at City last week. You will get: - hospital gown to wear during labour and delivery - you can request fresh gowns as often as you like - disposable underwear - although I took my own "nanna undies" which I was happy to dispose of, as I had suffered significant blood loss during vaginal delivery and then continued with heavy bleeding, the midwives constructed nappies for me to wear consisting of sanitary pads and disposable underwear - much more effective and comfortable! - endless supply of sanitary pads - nappies for the baby - baby wipes - nipple cream (not sure if this is supplied as a matter of course but you can request it) - range of toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap, toothbrush and paste, comb etc. I stayed in the hospital gown for most of my time in hospital except for the last two days where I wore comfy lounge clothes. It will really depend on your recovery what you end up using. Take outfits for your baby, onesies are enough. I took a swaddle for the baby which was invaluable as it tended to be cool in the room and I found that my baby really liked being bundled up. The hospital food was surprisingly good! They have a special menu for the maternity and labour wards with a selection of 3 items for each course. Finally, you will need to take copies of your and your husband's passports and visas as well as a copy of your attested marriage certificate. All the best!

Congrats Redrec Tangle, delighted to hear it! Good lick M, not long now til you have your bundle. Well my little angel arrived safely on June 15th. I was brought in to be induced on my due date (the 14th) and like my DD before this DD decided to take her time to make her way into the world ... unfortunately it meant in the end she went into fetal distress and I was whisked off for an Emergency C Section. All very traumatic in the end but thankfully we are both fine and she is just gorgeous. We have named her Keelin Eve and she weighed in at 3.56 kgs (think thats about 7lbs 12 oz). She is a week old today and my pain is easing day by day so its all good. My other DD (20 months) loves her new sister and there are lots of kisses being bestowed on her. Hope you are all well and enjoying your babies and best of luck to those near the end now. Curly Wonderful news, congrats Curly! I'm due on Sat and so far have had nausea, bowel movements and the baby has been very active but nothing to indicate labour. Am seeing the doctor on Sunday to discuss next steps! All the best ladies!

Does anyone know how to get medical aid/health insurance for pregnancy and birth? We have been told that we have to be with the same insurance company for 3 years before they will consider pregnancy coverage. We are at wits end! First baby is due end Jan and plan to have it here in Dubai. ANy advice/suggestions welcome. Hi there - if you do a search on this topic you should find previous threads discussing insurance options. I was in your position too a few months ago when I discovered that I was pregnant and also found out that my work did not provide maternity insurance. At the time, Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company was the only insurer that provided immediate maternity cover in the UAE - trust me, I did a LOT of research. Immediate cover for a woman under 30 was AED15K and for those over 30, AED19K. I am 33 and decided to take out the insurance as I wanted the assurance knowing that I would never be out of pocket more than the cost of insurance and I wanted to go to a private hospital (note Al Wasl's prices have gone up recently as suznz points out). Is it worth it? From my perspective, I would say so. Natural delivery at City Hospital is 12K - ADNIC is paying in full. I have seen the OB at City about 10 times or so and have paid 35 dirhams per visit (visits have included blood tests, scans and urine collection). I also had an emergency scare and had to visit the emergency department one night. Paid 50 dirhams for diagnostics including blood tests and heart monitoring. The other thing to note about medical care in the UAE is that even if you go through the public system, God forbid anything should go wrong during the course of your pregnancy or labour, the medical care is not free and you will have to pay. I am aware of a couple who were served a bill for over AED100K due to complications their newborn suffered. All the very best to you.

I've been pondering this one for years - my hubby's side of the family is Greek and they (esp my mother in law) have no problem telling people they are fat whenever they see them. Funny thing is, mother in law is the fatty in the family yet she still manages to make sure everyone else is told when they've put on weight!

Hi mishmash, just re-read my post and realised I could have been a bit clearer! Ok, Ikea roll down blind goes on first. You then install a rod above the window and this is where your curtain is hung. I then stuck down the left and right side of the curtains to the metal part of the window edges (you could stick it to the wall). The rope from the Ikea blind must be hanging on the outside of the curtain that you have just stuck down in or for you to have easy access to the roll up and roll down function. With the Pottery Barn curtain taped down, the light coming into the room is minimised. Hope that helps?!

Double sided tape..what a great idea MI..would never have thought of that :) I have been struggling to block the light that creeps in from the sides and will do the same. Where can I get double sided tape? and could you please share the contact details of the company you mentioned. DH is useless with these things..and would be great to have someone come and fix the IKEA blinds. Hi mishmash - you can get heavy duty double sided tape from Ace Hardware - it's the 3M brand one. You might be able to find it in a major supermarket too. Al Basti's number is 04 329 5799. :)

I did exactly the same as Southern Star - white roll downs from Ikea and nice thick blinds from Pottery Barn. I also used double sided tape down the side of the window to stick the Pottery Barn blinds down which helped immensely. I made sure the cord for the roll downs was still accessible so now if I want light I pull up the Ikea roll down and draw back the blinds. We got a trade company called Al Basti to install the rolls downs and curtains for 50 dirhams. edited by M on 10/06/2011

Try majestic nannies, they are based in Abu dhabi but have a large variety to select from. They are however mostly philippino ladies. If I'm not mistaken for nannies they charge anywhere from 2000 - 4000dhs but you can negotiate a lower price for the nanny (the agency however will not drop there finders fee) they also have house maids and they start from 1500 a month who may also have experience with children. Hope that was helpful Thanks Steth! Will have a chat to them.

This story was first reported a few months ago in the SMH - the woman is trying to sue the Australian hotel operator as it was they who hired her and with whom she signed the employment contract. Suing the Australian government for negligent advice at the consulate might a stretch but very significant if she wins. Very well regarded lawyers have taken on her case so she may be in luck ...

Hi Natasha - I am booked in at City and have 2.5 weeks to go (hopefully). Like you, I also asked plenty of questions and really found the stories on this forum from other women very helpful. If you search previous threads, you'll find lots of feedback on City, good and bad. I have been very happy with the care so far and recent discussions with girlfriends who have given birth at City and all have had good experiences with the nursing staff including the lactation consultant. I recently shared my birth plan with Dr. Ibrahim who told me I was being perfectly reasonable. It included things like walking around, using a birthing ball, managing pain relief the way I want to manage it, being able to eat and drink etc. The only thing he said he would prefer is if I delivered in a seated position on the bed rather than squatting or standing; personally, I'm ok with this. Water births are not allowed in the UAE from what I understand. TENS machines can be hired or bought and this was discussed at my antenatal class but I don't recall where you can hire them from. As you are entering your third trimester, I would recommend you register at a hospital sooner rather than later to ensure they can fit you in. Also, suggest you visit your short listed hospitals and do a tour of the facilities. Post delivery, you can visit baby clinics at hospitals or medical centres. Some clinics offer a home service as well but the cost may be prohibitive. good luck!

Hi Tweet - I was seeing Dr. Nirmala at Dubai Mall Medical Clinic. I will let you form your own opinion based on my feedback below as I don't want to risk getting into trouble. Essentially it comes down to what you are looking for from your medical carer. I was seeing this doctor when I was trying to fall pregnant. In my first pregnancy which resulted in a miscarriage at week seven, when I asked the doctor about information, I was told there were plenty of information sources on the Internet ... I didn't find her to have a helpful or comforting patient manner so I changed to another OB/GYN and it was the right decision for me. I have had similar feedback from a girlfriend who was also seeing this doctor and she also changed to another OB/GYN.

Hi - I've suffered from hyperthyroidism for about six years. My levels were stable before I fell pregnant. I was ok until I reached the third trimester and my TS3 and TS4 count showed as quite low so I have simply changed my dosage of thyroxine. Specialist will tell you what to keep an eye on during pregnancy. In fact, my endocrinologist happens to be pregnant so it's kind of nice knowing she knows what I am going through and it has been re-assuring. Like KarenBlixen, I have also had to increase my iron intake. good luck!

Hi speed quen We've had a couple of practice runs from the Springs as we're expecting and hubby is not too great with directions! It is pretty straight-forward. 1. Get onto SZR and stay on until you pass through the tunnel at the end of SZR where all the office towers and hotels are (aka known as world trade centre area). 2. As soon as you come out of the tunnel, merge to the extreme right. Take the exit. You'll see signs for Hatta, Wafi and American Hospital. 3. There is a sneaky exit once you come off SZR which takes you to Zaabeel and Hatta. Don't take this one. 4. Next, you'll have to merge into the left lane and immediately after this, you'll be merging with people coming off an interchange which will be on your right. At this point, you need to get into the right lane because this is your exit. You'll see a sign for various hospitals. You go up a ramp to the right and end up on a major road. Stay in your lane. 5. First exit is for Abu Dhabi/Jebel Ali (this gets you back on the road you were on). Avoid this exit and take the next one instead, the sign says Healthcare City. Stay in the right lane. 6. At the traffic lights turn right, at the next traffic lights turn left. 7. Take the first left, followed by the first right and the road will automatically lead you to City Hospital. Once you have done this drive once or twice you realise how easy it actually is. Good luck!

Agree with Tinker Bell - get them to email you an updated list. I would be surprised if there were only two clinics available. Be sure to clarify whether maternity insurance (just because you have insurance doesn't mean you are automatically covered for maternity as I found out with mine!) is covered and ask the insurance company to tell you which clinics are "within network" (direct billing) - saves you the trouble of seeking reimbursement! good luck : )

Congratulations Jazzybee! Like YellowJellyBean, I was you a couple of months ago too and am now in my 35th week. It's important to you work out your insurance. If you have maternity cover, you can go to any of the clinics listed in your plan and register with any of the hospitals in your plan. I can highly recommend Dr. Anna at Dubai London Clinic but unfortunately she is not registered with any hospitals as yet. I was seeing her early on and then switched to City Hospital where I have been seeing Dr. Ibrahim. If you prefer, you can see an OB/GYN at any of the hospitals listed in your maternity insurance. As soon as you start seeing an OB/GYN as an outpatient at a hospital, they will automatically register you to deliver there. If however you don't have maternity insurance, you can a) continue going to Dubai London Clinic but pay each time you see the OB/GYN, b) register in the public system and pay for antenatal visits and delivery or c) register in a private hospital and pay for antenatal visits and the delivery. If you don't have private maternity insurance and would prefer to go through the private system, ADNIC is currently the only insurer that will provide immediate maternity coverage. I would also recommend you keep an eye on this forum and search through previous threads - I found it incredibly beneficial and all the ladies here have been very helpful. All the best!

Our next door neighbour has also found a bag of clothes in their storage in the garage so it must be someone hiding or storing the items. Just concerned in case there are any theft implications!
