I just crossed the road near there and got flashed by a driver who was well over 150 metres away but obviously in a hurry. I made sure I gave myself plenty of time to cross and get to the other side as I am 34 weeks along and not as quick on my feet but I can't believe he/she had the nerve to flash me from such a distance away!!!!

I'm 99% sure you'll need to take your bags off the carousel and check them in again but as I said earlier, Athens airport is small and easy to get around. Only major queues I have ever seen in all the times I have traveled into Athens (hubby is Athenian) has been for Easyjet. All other airlines seem to have their act together! Oh, hello, fellow wofe of Athenian husbad :) Was it you who also mentioned how helpful they are at Athens Airport if you are late for a flight, or did I just imagine seeing that comment somewhere? Hi simpleasabc, nope, not me. Next trip is not until late August : ( We'll spend some time in Glyfada and are renting a villa in Lefkada for a week and a bit. Haven't been to Lefkada yet but hubby's family enjoy holidaying there so we are going to give it a go! One good thing about Athens airport is Hellenic Gourmet :)

Also posted this on the mums, bumps and bubs forum: Hi Ladies I've read all the previous threads on nurseries and am just checking in to see if there is any new advice or information to be shared regarding nurseries for newborns. I'm due next month and will need to return to work when the baby is 3 months old. I'll be looking for a nursery located either in the Emirates Living or Downtown areas but are happy to consider nurseries "on the way to work" such as those in Umm Suqeim, Safa or Jumeirah. I would require the nursery service through to 6pm. From what I have read, Blossoms, Little Wonders, and Little Scholar's Academy are highly recommended. Any other recommendations/advice? TIA

Hi LIL I have been seeing endos for the past six years. I recently started seeing Dr. Duha at Dubai London Clinic. Dr. Duha is a local lady, who was trained in the US and worked in some of the better hospitals in the US before returning to the UAE recently. I cannot recommend her highly enough. I believe she consults at DLC twice a week. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and she has been helping me manage my thyroid and insulin levels. Good luck.

I also stopped fitting into normal trousers at the start of the second trimester and was lucky to find good quality work trousers at Destination Maternity. Bought two black pairs and one grey which have gotten me through the last 20 weeks. I found Topshop and H&M to carry ok maternity stock however my best work finds came from asos.com - they have a great selection of work items.

I order from ASOS all the time! If you need to return anything, the process is straight forward and you can request an exchange or refund. The service is prompt. Some of the clothes I have ordered have had to be returned due to the cut or fabric.

Hi Babylons We travel to Athens quite frequently but I have not seen a meet and greet service. With the timings you mention below, I don't think you'll have any problem. When you arrive in Athens, you'll have to go through customs which has two queues - EU nationals and all other passports. If you find the queues too long, approach one of the customs officials (they tend to stand at the side of the queues) and say you have a connecting flight, they might allow you through. After customs, it's a very short walk to baggage collection and then all you need to do is take the lift to the departures floor and check in for your next flight. I recall one year we had an internal Greek flight and the whole process took about 30 mins from the moment we got off the plan to the moment we checked our bags in for the next flight. Athens airport is not huge with international and domestic flights serviced from the one terminal. Another option might be to check in online for your second flight - you may be able to go straight to the "web check in" queue for your connecting airline in Athens. Enjoy your holiday!

I'm with Plumie - ASOS rocks! They have a great selection, comfortable fits and the prices are so much better than what you find in the stores here. Check on a weekly basis as they have new stock in all the time. It's also worth browsing through the entire selection every now and then for discounts. I've also bought all my maternity bras from ASOS. Returns and refunds are easy to organise if you are unhappy with anything. If you decide to order, they don't take PO Box as an address but they do take "Post Office Box". Have fun : )

I'm also seeing Dr. Ibrahim. Hubby and I are so comfortable with him. He is a kind, gentle and thoughtful man. Seeing pictures of all the happy babies he has delivered pinned to his wall is also reassuring. I asked him about whether I should put together a birth plan (just to test the waters) and he insisted that I do and that we can chat about it next time we meet - good sign in my books!

Congratulations JoannaS!! I cannot imagine how much longer many of these old school doctors are going to continue with these attitudes! Almost every new or expectant mum I speak to has been educated about active labour techniques and chooses this approach for her delivery.

Hi chicken, we have the same style villa as you. Our owner pays the contract with Emrill and it costs 15K per annum. You get priority service (when they feel like it), monthly window cleaning and six monthly AC, electricity and water checks. I think it's overpriced for what you get.

I had my 32 week growth scan and 4D scan today at FMC and have also visited this clinic for the 12 week scan and 20 week scan. Have had excellent experiences with both doctors and the nurses/assistants are lovely too. Both doctors have a pleasant attitude, make you feel relaxed and take time to answer your questions. They are also good at providing you with assurance whenever they are testing anything as you see it on the screen the same time they do. Wish I had known about the discount though!!!!

Hi na115 - I'm not sure of the cost as they've never shown me a bill. Prior to getting maternity insurance, I was paying for consultations out of my own pocket and the fee varied depending on the length of the consultation, whether or not a scan was involved and whether or not I was asked to provide a urine or blood sample. Early on in my pregnancy I was seeing the lovely Dr Anna at Dubai London Clinic and my visits were charged at between 700 - 1800 dirhams. Visits were once a month. I agree with DubaiCat, visits should be monthly and then fortnightly from 32 weeks and weekly from 36 weeks so long as you have a normal pregnancy. You may need more visits if you have complications. As for insurance, does your insurance provide maternity cover? Silly question perhaps but not all insurance companies provide maternity, maybe that's why the hospital is saying you are not covered?

Hi Ladies - wondering if anyone else would care to share their experiences in negotiating maternity leave, see Sapphire99's original post below. I get 10 weeks paid leave and am taking 2 weeks annual leave to bring it to a total of 3 months. Due to work commitments, I pretty much have to return right away BUT am hoping to negotiate working from home on one day a week or perhaps finishing a few hours earlier and working through the week. I don't like my chances but will give it a try anyway. Any other experiences/tips from other ladies?

It's a lovely resort, very romantic. Be sure to request a villa with privacy otherwise you may end up with one where your private pool faces other people's. We had a tented room on the edge of the resort and faced the desert and sunset - gorgeous. Make time to visit the spa and spend at least an hour in their rainforest section - fantastic and completely relaxing. Enjoy - you'll have a great time!

I'm seeing a Dr at City Hospital and am 32 weeks along. At no stage have I been asked to enter into any packages, I just simply showed my insurance card on my initial visit. However, I only commenced appointments at City from week 26 onwards, prior to this I was seeing my gyno at a clinic. I also checked with the insurance company, ADNIC, to make sure everything is covered, and they stressed to me that every aspect of my maternity, delivery and new born care would be covered provided I attended a hospital within the network. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get any nasty shocks like some of the other ladies on this thread ...

All the services at the Greek Orthodox church in Jebel Ali are in Arabic. They don't have a Greek priest. Lots of Greeks seem to attend anyway. We went for Easter last year and found it to be quite similar to a Greek service but in Arabic.

Totally agree with Hannah33, without a doubt we had the best steak there than we have had anywhere else and the service was excellent, best service I have experienced in Dubai. We had dinner on Valentine's Day and were seated at the window. View was excellent but it is only a 180 degree view of SZR towards Deira. I would definitely go back for a special occasion - only because it is so expensive!!

Similar experience with me - had to be cited by a lawyer (luckily I worked in a law firm), I then had to take it to an office of the Dept of Foreign Affairs and when I got it back, had to send it to the UAE embassy in Canberra. Took about two weeks. Why not check in with the Aussie embassy in Abu Dhabi or consulate in Dubai to confirm the process? You might be able to undertake part of the process here, for example, there are a number of Aussie practising lawyers based in Dubai who might be able to attest the documents for you before you send them off to DFAT???

Hi Shezza1 All lawyers must be licensed so you can check the Dubai Chamber website as a starting point. There are some law firms who specialise only in property law whereas other law firms offer a number of different legal services. Some advise individuals, others only advise corporations. Which you choose depends entirely on your needs and what you are looking for from a lawyer. Without a legal professional body in the UAE to help you narrow down the quality of providers, I would recommend you check out their websites to get a feel for their expertise, their tenure in the UAE and how professional they appear. Independent services such as Legal 500 (http://www.legal500.com/c/united-arab-emirates/real-estate) and Chambers Global (http://www.chambersandpartners.com/Global/Editorial/40578) can help too.

Ladies, how do I go about getting a new gardener? Do I just stop one I see cycling on the street or do I need to phone someone? Our gardener was employed but the previous tenant and he is terrible. I cannot begin to tell you how many problems we have had with him not watering properly and plants, trees and shrubs dying, not raking, or not turning up for days but yet demanding his full pay and knocking on our window to ask for bottles of water. We have given him so many chances and felt guilt at the prospect of firing him. We even bought our own rake and raked the dead leaves on the grass. Anyway, the icing on the cake is that last weekend we noticed our rake was missing (we were looking for it as the garden was littered with leaves last week). When the gardener eventually turned up the next day, he had our rake attached to his bike and told my husband that he needed it because his other rake broke! My husband told him to leave our rake at our house and not to take it again. Ok sir was the response. That was last Saturday and we notice that he has had the rake all week long meanwhile our garden is messy!!!

You have to register your Emirates ID card at the e-gate counter at the airport. The great thing is that you can do this on the spot at the airport and your card is activated immediately. It's so convenient! At least I can justify having an Emirates ID card now!

Hi Ladies I've searched the forums for an answer to this topic but wasn't able to find the info. We are expecting our first baby in June. As we want to travel in late August, I'm keen to get the birth certificate, passport and visa sorted out. Both of us work and are sponsored by our employers. I have been told by our HR that in order for our baby to obtain a visa in its passport or for a stamp to be issued in my passport or that of my husband's for the baby, we will need to supply our marriage certificate and it will need to be attested by the UAE embassy of the country in which we got married. Is this correct? We've been here for a few years now and I even sponsored my husband at one stage as he wasn't working but I didn't need to have the marriage certificate attested or translated. Thanks in advance.

Being six and a half months pregnant myself, I'm enjoying going to the pool in a bikini and getting a healthy glow but I am careful not to over-do it and I tend to stay in the shade. And to those who think it is inappropriate - I'm sorry, but if I have to be subjected to seeing men in budgie smugglers with huge guts, then I don't think there is anything wrong with me stripping down to a bikini

Hi Jeniferm I've been in Springs 2 for 1.5 years and LOVE it. Am six months pregnant myself. Hubby and I are so happy where we are. Here's why we love it: - it takes me 5 minutes to walk to the big Spinneys - I have a small community pool 200 metres away and there is also a playground for kids which will come in handy soon - we have a proper backyard which is full of lovely trees and plants and we love sitting outside in the still of the night, it is so quiet! - easy access to Sheikh Zayed Road, no construction or road works - a service station has opened up less than 1km from where we are which is useful - if you enjoy going to the gym or want to access a larger pool, you can sign up to Hayya which has three branches in the area. I think if you can work out what your needs are, there are plenty of places in Dubai which you will find comfortable.

Last week I needed some plants for my garden. A friend and I headed off to the plant souq close to Academic City. My friend had been before so we knew where to go. Ghafat Zayed Nursery. Mr. Amir was most helpful, giving us advise on which plants would survive the heat, summer, direct sunlight etc. He was even able to arrange inexpensive transport for our plants to our villas. Give him a try. His mobile number is 050-7589951. Tell him you got his info from EW. Don't worry Dubai Di, when I get good service from someone in Dubai I get super excited too and feel like sharing the news around, particularly as good service in Dubai is so rare! Many times I've want to leave a post about Mr. Mohammed the satellite man, Santosh the handy repairman and my friendly DVD lady who shall remain nameless. It's not advertising if you have a positive experience and want to share the news.

I assume you mean Khasab in Oman? Khasab is literally at the end of the road - you can't miss it. The tricky part, I find, is the drive through RAK. Emirates Rd leads you into RAK and you have to drive through the town north until you get onto the road that eventually leads you to the UAE/Oman border. Once on the Oman side, getting to Khasab is a breeze, just stick on the main road and when you drive through the villages, they all have signs pointing to Khasab. Not sure about petrol, I would get a full tank at a station on Emirates Rd. I'm sure you'll come across a petrol station once in Khasab too. We've been to Khasab and back on a full tank and went 4WDing for a couple of hours whilst there.

I recently returned from Luxor and Cairo and did not have any problems with security. Even drove around the infamous Tahrir Square a few times and apart from one burnt out building, you would never have known there had been any problems. BUT because of the lack of tourists, we found that we were hassled quite a bit every where we went to stop and look inside stores or were sometimes followed around by beggars.

Thanks M - thats great news! What was your dosage? Initially I was on 2000mg per day as my levels were through the roof when I was first diagnosed. Over the years, the dosage has come down to 1000mg per day and now that I am pregnant, I have stopped taking it. Metformin based medication helps your body absorb insulin (sugars) from food over a longer period of time. Insulin resistant people have the added problem in that because the body does not absorb insulin from food naturally, the body produces its own insulin when you eat to compensate. Hence you get two doses of insulin when you eat and that explains the weight gain. In effect, because your body is absorbing insulin more effectively, you feel full for longer. As wuffles says, glucophage is not to be taken lightly and should ideally be prescribed by an endocrinologist who specialises in insulin resistance.

Melinda, that was my issue also. Prior to being diagnosed, I was doing body pump twice a week and followed an ok diet. It wasn't until I started putting on weight for no apparent reason that I knew something was wrong. I went from 57kg to 62kg with no obvious reason. Once I commenced on glucophage and followed a low carb diet, I got down to 55kg and was able to maintain this for a long time ... until I came to Dubai! It took me a good four weeks to start noticing a difference in my weight once I started on the glucophage, I am sure you'll start seeing results very soon! good luck : )

Here's my experience: Diagnosed with grave's disease (hyperthyroidism), followed by PCOS and insulin resistance. All linked. Got the thyroid hormones under control, had a cyst removed which was wrapped around my left ovary (ovary salvaged) and have been on glucophage for four years. BUT I followed a strict diet and exercise regime. My doctors advised me that you cannot just rely on the tablets to help you keep your weight off, you need to make some life style changes too - it's better for you in the long term. In my last two glucose fasting intolerance tests, I have recorded normal levels of insulin and was told by the doctors that this is is due to me re-educating my body through exercise and diet. To top things off, I fell pregnant within four months of trying and am now in my third trimester. I think you have to be willing and ready to put in the work to manage your condition if you want a successful outcome. But, it's different for everyone!!

If you are looking for a beach/pool holiday, then why not rent a villa or large apartment? My husband is Greek so we travel to Greece frequently and I have always found that self-booking is much more cost effective than booking through agents in the UAE. www.holidayrentals.co.uk has a lot of properties which might be suitable for your family. Most beach clubs throughout Greece have play areas for kids. The only family friendly hotel I have stayed at in Greece is the Westin at Vouliagmeni which is an upmarket coastal town about 20kms south of Athens. They have a small private beach which is popular with kids and also a kids club.

can you really avoid going thru X-rays??. What X-ray machines?, the security ones?. I will be also traveling in the next few weeks and would like to know. Absolutely. The x-ray machines are the ones you go through in each airport (usually where your hand baggage is checked). All you need to do is signal to the guard that you are pregnant, even if you are not showing, the security will allow you to walk around the x-ray machine. In some airports, such as those in Dubai, you go into a private room where a female security officer will pat you down. In other airports, they may use a hand-held scanner which is apparently safe to do so. Regarding medical certificates for airlines, check the terms of carriage for each airline you plan to travel with. I just came back from Egypt this weekend and I did get asked to show my fit for flight certificate from my doctor. Most airlines will only ask to see this from about week 26 onwards. You are usually asked for this by the airline at the check in counter although one air hostess did also ask me on the flight whether I was approved to travel. Another tip - ask your doctor or clinic to provide you with a pregnancy report which details all your particulars including your blood type and other vital information. Dubai London Clinic provided me with one of these as soon as I found out I was pregnant and I have it with me wherever I go ...

Agree with Shellly - also travelled a lot and including long haul without any problems. Best to check with your doctor though. Please remember that you should not walk through the x-ray machine and there is also a risk with e-gate - one Emirati customs official warned me that there is a laser which can be potentially dangerous but another one said there was no issue .. personally I would be cautious and still go to the e-gate section but get them to scan your card manually.

I emailed them weeks ago and heard nothing ! Called the number today and the person I spoke to, spoke very little English - I am going to try again tomorrow !! Let me know if you have any luck on how we can obtain some tickets !! I also spoke to this woman today and she told me that the UAE Olympic Committee office is not responsible for selling tickets even though they are listed as such on the London 2012 website. She said to call back tomorrow and she will have the telephone number of the place in Dubai who will be selling the tickets - yep - good luck with that one!
