Sorry to be resurrecting an old thread. We're considering looking at this area-we're currently just up the road in Furjan but need to move by the first week of March. Can anyone tell us if there are buses/feeder buses available to the nearest metro? We don't drive so transport is an issue. TIA! :rainbow: Al Badrah or Veneto? Both communities do not have feeder buses / bus to anywhere. That said, can't speak of Veneto but we just moved to Badrah about 3 months back and it's a nightmare. The villa's and apartments are poorly constructed. Sadly it has already become 50% like International City. Laborers and Business women have taken over the villas and apartments and security just take a blind eye. Security is useless and after midnight anyone can enter the community. There are no pools or shops, a handful of restaurants deliver. Will not be renewing end of this year. We looked at the apartments at Badrah just over year ago and actually put a deposit down as the landlord agreed to 4 cheques. The estate agent then told us he'd given it to someone else who could do 1 cheque. Looks like we had a lucky escape. It's such a shame as we thought the area was lovely and quiet and naively thought the pool would be open in a matter of months. We ended up moving to Damac Naia in Downtown Jebel Ali. The security people are great, only a 10 minute walk to the metro station and straight onto SZR in a matter of minutes. There are no villas there though, only apartments.

So... we succumbed and bought the Fine Dining book. We usually stick to our favourite restaurants but thought we'd start trying new ones this year so on Friday we visited a Chinese restaurant in a hotel on SZR (would love to name and shame but...) We ordered 2 starters, 2 mains, fried rice and 2 beers. Anyway, after a mediocre meal we asked for the bill and gave them the voucher. When we received it we saw they'd taken the price of the rice off. When we complained to the waiter he told us that rice is classed as a main meal in China!!! He then changed his mind and said that indeed, it isn't a main dish. Asked for the manager who wouldn't come to our table. It was eventually sorted but I have just emailed Entertainer and the restaurant. Just beggars belief how cheeky they are to think they'll get away with it. They do come up with some brilliant excuses mind

... just had my first encounter with a beggar (I think). Sat at my desk in reception at work when a bloke comes in and shows me his NOL card saying he needs to get home but he has no balance left on it. As a tight, cynical Northerner I told him I had no money but he could always ask a policeman in the metro station for help. I've heard about the fake wounds and no money for petrol scams but I've not come across this before, unless it was genuine..... The part about "tight, cynical Northerner" made me laugh I was accosted once on the street but I just ignored him which made me feel bad as he could of been genuine however there are too many scams. If I was close to the Metro I would of gone and topped up his NOL card with 20AED or so Call me harsh but I've read so many stories of people lying to make a bit of cash I don't really believe any of them. There's a beggar called Gemma who's famous in Sheffield for loitering around the train station asking for 70p from everyone she sees for the bus, she's been doing it for the past 10 years. No idea where she wants to go, the fare must cost a fortune  And when you read about kind hearted souls who offer people a cup of tea or a sandwich instead of cash and they get sworn at makes me very wary of some even though there are some genuine cases.

Loads of quirky and funny cards at 'Typo' at Me'aisem City Centre Mall. But I totally feel your pain about how pathetic the card selection here in this country is... Why?! How can so many big Hallmark shops have such rubbish cards? The ones in the Tesco petrol station (back home) even had a bigger/better selection, haha! I know exactly what you mean. The ones for men are the worst. Tacky cards with fishing or golf pictures that can be bought back home in the local corner shop for 25p cost 20dhs here. Madness! It's so much cheaper to buy cards for people back in the UK than for friends over here. I used Funky Pigeon to send my Christmas cards and it worked out about £1.00 each.

Was also disappointed that Kitchen 6 and Al Hadeerah both disappeared from the Fine Dinning. I used to buy it only for these 2 outlets. And it is really frustrating to have to pay a higher price for the useless travel book that they are attaching/forcing "as free" to all other books. Yeah, would be interesting to know how many people do use the travel book. We've bought the Fine Dining book every year since we moved here (2011) and kept each one for some reason! It's weird looking at the restaurants that used to be in it, miss Don Corleone's so much lol. We love Spanish food but Al Hambra have put a stop to their tapas vouchers, it's now main meals only and the Casa de Tapas brunch voucher isn't in it this time so we're still deciding whether to buy it this year or not.

I always use the fire escape steps at work instead of going in the lift (pointless dieting exercise, I know lol). One evening I was walking down them and saw a man smoking underneath a no smoking sign without a care in the world. Yes, yes. I know I should have said something and next time I will. Lots of people must do it because I see loads of tab ends on the steps

It's a pain in the b@!% when you have allergies! I'm always complaining to Carrefour + Geant about this. Then there are those products with no instructions/ingredients in English and I have to type everything into Google translate! I know, I know...first world problems... :rainbow: Geant's own brand, Casino, are terrible. I hate Halloween. It's just another money making American import. We just watched the football, had a few lagers and ignored the door if anyone rang the bell  It is not ánother'money making American import. please read this you might be surprised where it originated from! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween Now, I realize that a good amount of children that come to the doors do not celebrate Halloween in their countries so are not familiar with Etiquette, so I think rather than ***** about their behaviour you could use it as a learning tool for them. Why not get a big group of parents together and the week before halloween go around to schools and explain the etiquette in the form of a short fun play or something...dress up in scary costurms etc....ask newspapers in other languages to explain in short form what Halloween is and the etiquette and why you say trick or treat and also about being greedy. brw, asking for money is also part of it if they do not get a treat. In Canada we had Unicef boxes. BTW in Canada we also have parents in cars driving around so it is not just here. We just do not have maids doing the parents job. Anyway, just my thoughts. I know the origins of Halloween, it's just in the past few years it's got sooo commercialised it's beyond silly (but every festival is now, I suppose). Think I went trick or treating once when I was about 10. I went out wearing a black bin liner, carrying a carved turnip and made the grand total of 50p

Sorry can't relate-- we didn't have one ring of the bell! But I can imagine the lack of politeness and manners.. and asking for money? Haha, can't blame them for trying! :loser: At home we have Halloween then a week later penny for the guy. Expensive week in the UK lol Should be renamed Pound for the Guy! Glad they don't do that here. I hated going to the corner shop just before Bonfire Night, never knew a gang of 10 year olds could be that intimidating!

I have just had a quick look at this FB page. Its very good but most of his items are more expensive than the supermarket :-( Beef fillet especially Oh, that's a shame :( As Geordie Expat has said, maybe talk to the butcher manager at Park & Shop. We contacted him last year about our Christmas joints and he was really helpful. He should be really when his name's Charles Hamm (honest)

1st - 3rd December? I thought Martyr's Day was on the 30th November  I think when it falls mid week with a day off in between they move it As the public sector get 2 days for national day which are the 2nd and 3rd they will move the holidays to the 1st so the days fall at the end of the week Aaah, that explains it. Thank you :)

I would recommend The Terrace Restaurant at Airport Meridian, its an outside venue but in a gorgeous setting, food and alcohol package aed265 incl cocktails - taking my parents there next week! Do you mean the Meridien Village Terrace? We've been there a few times and love it. The band isn't the best but it's good for a laugh! They do a cheaper booze package for 229dhs. That also includes cocktails but the overall selection is more limited than the 265 one but as long as they carry on serving Fosters, I'm a happy bunny

After 3 years of various electricians coming into our house and not fixing an ongoing electrical problem, I have had enough. None of them are properly trained. Does anyone know of an electrician who actually has proper European/Western standard credentials and actually know what they are doing? I would be grateful for any input. Thanks Native English Electricians will not be working for handyman companies etc These guys will be senior managers within the private manufacturing/construction sector There is a market for them but companies will employ less qualified guys for a fraction of the cost. Less qualified = screwdriver and a Lulu carrier bag  We heard good things about MPlus for maintenance (including electrics) so when our fuse box died I called them up to arrange an appointment so I booked a day off work to wait in for them. When they didn't show up, I phoned them and they said they'd gone to the wrong address. They were in Downtown DIFC and we live in Downtown Jebel Ali. Not many people have heard of the area, granted, but that's the reason I told them which exit to take and what metro station to go past. I was then told that there was nobody available to come that day, "maybe tomorrow ma'am". Why is the simplest little thing so complicated? Grrr! Sorry for the rant, and I know it hasn't helped you Sue, but I feel slightly better for it now

Gozo is our home now, we work here but every moment we have for holidays, we go home to our little bit of Paradise. There is an influx of refugees on Malta but not really noticeable to tourists as they are quickly immersed into society or moved on to the rest of Europe ( the islands are too small to cope with large numbers). As previously said, the Maltese and Gozitans are some of the most warm and welcoming of any people I have met. Malta is perhaps better for children in that they have a few more child friendly attractions, but for us also, Gozo beats Malta hands down in every other way! If you want beautiful beaches, ancient architecture, stunning coastlines, gorgeous produce beyond compare and terrific hospitality, you can not go wrong on either of these two of the Maltese islands. Shhh, don't tell everyone! I'm counting the days til we return. We usually stay in Marsalforn but we're going to Xaghra next year for a change. There's not as much to do there but there are a few bars and restaurants, plus a great peacake shop (love these too much, unfortunately lol).

Absolutely the best airline in my opinion. Have flown with them 8 times. Wonderful, pleasant, smiling and attentive staff (unlike the UK airline) and they allow you to bring your own booze on board and drink it to your hearts content. Never a delay and would recommend above Emirates. Wish I'd had known that. I had visions of sneaking my duty free into the loo for a crafty drink or three

We've flown with them twice to the UK because they were cheaper than Emirates. We had to fly to Heathrow and drive north though as they don't go to Manchester, which is a pain. The flight was fine, no delays. The meal was typical plane food, nothing spectacular. They don't serve booze which I thought would put a downer on the trip as I enjoy a tipple when flying but I didn't really miss it. The only disconcerting thing is they play a pre-recordered prayer just before take off. That was a new one for me

Love, love, love Malta! The pace of life is so much slower than Dubai and so relaxing. People in the shops and hotels are genuinely friendly (no fixed smiles and robotic greetings lol). Me and my husband's personal favourite is Gozo (the smaller island to the north of Malta). If Malta is laid back then Gozo is horizontal! We love it so much we're going for the third year running next June and we're currently trying to save up to retire there. I'm not sure about activities for little ones but the locals are extremely family orientated and love children. The beaches are clean and the sea is crystal clear, even though the water might be a bit nippy this time of year  Plus they drive on the correct side of the road ;)

How do you transport sausages/ham etc so that they stay fresh?? I take my silver freezer bags and 3-4 ice packs. Buy it the day of flight or night before. Pack in plastic bags then in the freezer bags with the frozen blocks and into the suitcase. It's the first job when arriving home, straight into the freezer. They are still very cold to the touch. Wouldnt attempt it longer than an 8 hr flight. Used to do it SYD-HK and now do it UK-DXB, no problems (always direct flights and so far, no diversions). Sounds good :) This now means I can add dripping and potted meat to the list. My mum is going to kill me

You could do a picnic of sandwiches, quiche, salad, fairy cakes etc As long as you have cheese and pickle sandwiches - that's pretty British ;-) Since when has quiche been British ??? Why not just order in a selection of sandwiches with British fillings, egg and tomato, beef, etc salads and trifle. You could substitute the quiche with cheese pie. School dinners, mmmmm. My mouth is watering now :) Cheese and onion pie  No good for my diet though  With sponge pudding and pink custard for afters! S** the diet

We lived there a couple of years ago in a 1 bed apartment. It was quite large and the bathroom was to die for! If there were any problems, the people on the front desk usually sorted it out pretty quickly and were very polite and friendly (the perks of living in joint hotel accommodation, I suppose). The bar was an obvious bonus and I think we got a 20% discount on food and drink with our resident cards. The only downside was the size of the pool, it's tiny and I don't think residents are allowed to use the one for hotel guests. We could also hear noise from the neighbours, especially from a quite amorous couple every few hours in the early morning, but that's a different story! We only left because the price went up from 70,000 to 120,000 in 1 year :(

The UK makes me laugh. Councils that snoop on households, making sure that they put the right things in the right wheelie bin. A Coke can in the green bin and you're done for! It's a drop in the ocean when you see the number of massive gas guzzlers, over the top packaging and the huge amount of waste over here.

The main question here is: Do any of these places do PROPER traditional clotted cream? Because when I had a Cream Tea at the Waldorf Astoria, they brought out a little dish of squirty cream - _ - and blueberry jam - _ - Not the traditional strawberry or raspberry. Reading this thread reminded me that we have a Waldorf afternoon tea BOGOF voucher from Time Out way back in March that's still going to be valid when the in laws come to visit. I knew I came on this forum for a reason! Ps. it says clotted cream on their online menu so it had better be!

Your phone is linked to your visa, so every time you renew your visa, you have to renew your phone registration. People without visas can still keep their numbers - my mother did this when she came for a visit recently - she's on DU, just had to pay a small reregistration fee to activate the number again. My Visa doesn't need renewing til next March
