Thank you, there is a 'think kitchen' shop but its not great for icing/baking. The @home shop used to be goodish but that's gone now. I actually tried waitrose and they had what i was looking for, better selection than i was expecting. Would love if they had a tavola or lakeland in DM though. <em>edited by mannikat on 17/08/2014</em>

Sun and sands behind the gold and diamond park usually has plenty of winter stuff. I've gotten plenty of adult stuff there and the kids section looked pretty good.

Personally I think the difference is that while there is a variation of a class system back home, its not as prevalent and while it may be perpetuated from the top down it certainly isn't from the bottom up. I don't feel worth more or less than anyone. Back home (for me) education is free and provided for all. Opportunities might not be equal but they are far more balanced. I sound like a broken record, to me it's all about education. My mum never felt she could work outside the home, where as for me my options were wide open regarding, education, work etc.. provided I worked for the opportunities I was given. If you are repeatedly told and treated like you are less, you will believe it and vice versa if you are repeatedly told you are better than x because you have y then you will also believe it. Education breaks this cycle but it takes time. As for the OP unfortunately the maids you have come across are perpetuating the system as they know it (possibly through unfortunate personal experience) hopefully you get a maid and you help to break the cycle. Good luck. <em>edited by mannikat on 17/08/2014</em>

Not sure if you have kids or what distances you are talking about. Could you and your DH visit his parents for a day then you head off to see your family and he joins you a few days later maybe if you have kids they could stay with him for the PIL time? We usually 'divide & conquer' spend some time with each family together and separately. That way we actually have more quality family time. The house thing is a good idea but it wouldn't work for us either. We usually have to hire one/two cars but we generally don't have to pay for accommodation unless we take a wkend for ourselves. <em>edited by mannikat on 13/08/2014</em>

I don't know where they get the idea its normal in Europe, I haven't cleaned since it was part of my job in a restaurant. Yes in Europe generally we clean up after ourselves after tea/lunch etc. but general cleaning like hoovering, dusting, toilet cleaning is not done. I think some people just don't realise what clean is, it takes time and cant be done in 5mins before you leave the office. As others have suggested get some quotes and see what they say.

I'm really sorry to hear you are having so much trouble we are on a waiting list and have several friends living there and the completely love it. From what i can gather different contractors worked on different groups of villas and some did a terrible job. I guess my friends have been lucky. I hope that things turn around for you. I don't know what we will do if we get one, i really love it there and my friends are really loving but I don't want to get stuck in one of the dodgy ones.....

Great building, the management company that owns many of the apartments are difficult all contracts are non renewable and some have been upheld when tenants tried to fight. They are kicking people out constantly and blowing the rents through the roof, but so many of them are empty, i think you could easily get them down on the price. Apartments on the al khail side are very noisey, even with the balcony doors shut, making the balcony kind of useless as you can't hear anyone talk out there. the gym is basic and the pool is lovely, there is a small shop downstairs, a nursery is due to open soon and there is a crossfit gym. parking isn't a problem if you drive down the sand and around you can park right by the door. Visitors dont often go this far but its handy and easy.

I really do understand but the benefits really don't out weigh the risks. I sublet from a friend so it was reliable but even still it could all have gone horribly wrong. if you go ahead which i suggest you don't, as someone else mentioned, get copies of the lease, his id and also up to date bills showing nothing is in arrears you don't want your dewa getting cut off. you should also check out the building security and see what they are like you dont want them reporting you or cutting off the utilities thinking the apartment is empty, they might do this if they think the tenant has left.

There is no way to protect yourself as you don't have a contract and his contract mostly likely specifically states that he is not allowed to sublet. He is unlikely to get you kicked out as that would be getting himself in trouble too. If you can find a serviced apartment or something else you would be better off, its really not worth the stress and risk. (I did this myself when i first got here and it was so stressful, worrying the whole time)

I don't think they could assess being able help your family member by talking to you, they would need to speak to the person involved, as any therapist would. I have used lifeworks and while it was expensive it was completely worth it for me, I hope some other ladies can give you more affordable options. Would this persons insurance cover any of the costs? mine covered some sessions as i was referred by a gp. Best of luck

You can get this done after you get here, my DH's company PRO sorted it out for us after we got married. (Took DH a full year to get around to it!) If your DH has got a job the company PRO can assist he will know exactly what to do. Ours cert went to the irish embassy in AD for stamping yours will need to be stamped in the Cypriot embassy i guess. Then at least two other offices before we got it back attested. It only took a few days. I'm sure we had to provide passport photos as well. You will need tonnes for Dubai anyway so get plenty!

In Dubai, a major con is school fees even if your company covers school fees, they usually only cover 2 kids. My DH is from a large family and wants the same, here it simply isn't feasible. Not a mum yet so can't give any other advice. I am one of three (only girl) and loved and hated it over the years. From a child's perspective in larger family dh loved it, and after getting to know his family I can really see what individual relationships they have with each other its really lovely. I thought there were so many they would get lost in the crowd. I have a friend that is one of 14!

The problem with reporting anything here is that you immediatly become involved. Having recently seen a situation escalate while I was in hospital, police and hospitals authorities involved as someone alleged their mother had been treated disrespectfully, I would be very frightened to say a word against anyone these days and I am an incredibly law abiding person. Beware! Trouble with that is, if everyone turns a blind eye, then what does it do to society? People just end up doing what they want. If the guy that owns the company supports the zionist cause, then I don't think I care that much: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wexner_Foundation What is your point?

Dear All, have a great Eid break first of all. I have just received my new UK passport and also my son's, I was wondering if it is mandatory to transfer the UAE residence visa to the new passport from the old passport, or can I just staple/rubber band the old and new together. Generally it will be accepted if you staple the old passport to the new one. However when DH's egate didn't work last year he was told at immigration that a visa must be in a valid passport to be valid. They let him through anyway. I think it depends on who you get at immigration.

ooohhh how exciting!! Are you asking for a couple or for a family? I did this with my DH when we traveled a few years ago. We used wicked campers, they are converted toyota hiace vans, no toilet or shower but can sleep two and comes with a little sink, camp cooker and bbq. we loved it!! stayed in campsites with shower facilities. there are plenty of DOC (dept of conservation) sites but the facilities are limited they are generally super cheap and run on honesty. We went up as far as the bay of islands on the north island then travelled back via the coast and crossed to the south island. we went down as far as Dunedin then travelled across to Queenstown and up that coast. NZ is outrageously beautiful, and the fresh air its just immense and the people are amazing! Def recommend doing a maori tour, glacier tour, wine tours in napier and marlbourgh especially if you like white wine. We were there in Nov, it was warm generally, it rained on day but we were on a glacier anyway! It is expensive but we had just travelled south america so we were used to very cheap everything. Enjoy!! as you can tell i am very jealous! <em>edited by mannikat on 23/07/2014</em>

So maids are to be given a code of conduct for their free time? She doesn't work for a multinational! [b'>As long as she isn't doing anything illegal it's her own business.[/b'> If you are worried about her, as in worried she may get into trouble by all means have a talk with her and if you are worried about her appearance coming or going from your house ask her to change somewhere else. Personally I don't get social networking between employers/employees. Whether you like it or not, we all have a code of conduct for our free time, if people get up to illegal acitivity in their own time, they CAN and are OFTEN sacked.... the chick in the back of the taxi, the chick on the beach... etc etc. The law is separate to a code of conduct and I am not suggesting that she isn't accountable in her off time, there are modesty laws. The examples you gave are illegal as they are back home (I love how people think Dubai is the only place you can't **** in public!) however the law is enforced here. Its a bit of jump to go from skimpy clothes to calling her a hooker and expecting her [b'>to be bringing guys over[/b'>. Women do themselves no favours when they talk about each other this way. what I meant here is bringing her BF and not any random guy, which could easily happen and we have heard about similar incidents several times. and Yes I am concerned about the way she's in and out from the house but not really bothered about the way she dresses on her day off as long as she walks in and out dressed modestly. Having a male over BF or random would be illegal. Just talk to her and remind her of the laws here.

It wouldn't be my sole reason but Dubai is in the 'middle east' therefore it makes a lot of places easier to get to. I would love to live somewhere with no bad points but no such place exists. Here i get to make a difference at work, get to save money and travel regularly amongst many other good things. By staying in my car at the petrol station some else gets a job by not making my tea at work someone else has a job. I don't enjoy either and both were alien to me. If you go to a country like the us/uk/ireland etc... you can naturalise and can become part of the society, here that is not an option unless you marry a local, or buy property and with buying property you still have no social security. Many of us are here to earn for our families, here and at home and for futures at home or else where, what we need to earn depends on the cost of living at home or where we intend to go next and how we choose to live here. I am in no position to judge someone that chooses to share a tiny room here while paying off a mortgage for house back home. If i had more sense maybe i would do the same! People that do menial jobs aren't lesser than anyone by virtue of their job or their salary they only become that way if others treat them that way. Who looks down at friends just because they make less money?! Why are service workers you don't know any different? <em>edited by mannikat on 22/07/2014</em>

I have used dazzle and cara. Don't use dazzle, my engagement ring was too large and they cut a chunk out (tried to keep the extra gold) and after awhile the line became visible until it could actually be pulled apart. Cara have been fine, the quoted price is always more than what you end up paying they seem to over estimate and then make it cheap. 'Under promise over achieve' I've had no issues but friends that got rings with very small diamonds in the bands had problems with them falling out. Monali is supposed to be quiet good but I haven't used them myself. Congrats & good luck! edited by mannikat on 22/07/2014 Thanks Mannikat! The guy at Cara told me for the design I wanted to expect possibly the diamonds to fall out - so already I was not impressed. The diamonds I am looking at are 0.22 for each one so not small really... Im thinking they would come out if I went to Cara! Is Monali in the Gold and Diamond Park? I will take a look thank you :) Yep monali is in the gold and diamond park. This site is great for getting setting ideas if you need them! http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/sapphires/sapphire-settings/c-24-ring-settings/?metaltype=w14

I don't wish to burst anyone's bubble here but like it or not if you are a resident here you benefit from in some way or turn a blind eye to any under the rug goings on because you KNOW you do not have a voice to fight them yet remain here anyway because you need the job yourself. And anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. The only people who can rightfully say it is not done wrong, it is bad, are those who say so as they sit in another country and refuse to come. There is the thumb down option so you can further be in denial. But if you have a resident visa… you are on board with everything here, like it or lump it you sold your values for the job that brought you here. edited by Londiamond on 22/07/2014 That's a bit general, some of us have jobs that allow us to actively improve the situation for others here. Personally I would find it quiet difficult to work here if it wasn't part of my job.

Thank you. Golly is that 1000 dirhams for dinner out for one. ..? Seems horrendously expensive This is the high end of the scale and would include wine, but probably only one bottle..... get a fine dining entertainer if you like to eat out. The most depressing part is when you google/use vivino to get the average price for the wine you have just paid 50e+ for and it about 9e at home.

it would not be safe for this type of job, as this is considered working at a height, therefore it must be a platform/cherry picker that has guard rails and provides use of a safety harness.

Don't know about the pulley system, can you not get a guy on a cherry picker in to change it? probably as expensive as as scaffolding but a lot quicker. Generally with a double height ceiling the building managers would probably change them all at specific intervals to avoid changing one randomly.

This is really confusing, I used to work in finance but not Islamic finance. bps means base points its its explained here http://www.investinganswers.com/financial-dictionary/investing/basis-points-bps-1283 To my understanding the term loading here would mean that the insurance policy must cover that percentage/bps of your loan. Equity release means releasing value from your home for cash. Basically if you have 50% equity in your home and you need cash for a new kitchen, car whatever, you can ask the bank holding your mortgage to release the equity its generally known as top up loan back home, you can usually do thins depending on the value of your home, your age and your payment history. Try talking to an independent mortgage broker if you can. edited by mannikat on 20/07/2014 <em>edited by mannikat on 20/07/2014</em>

An independent adviser here will be able to do very little for you with regard to debt. Banks here can do more or less as they please so you will have to follow any instructions they give. Sorry I don't have any one to recommend. The best advise in any debt situation is to talk to your bank as soon as possible and see what your options, are this will depend on the issue you have with your debt. If you are lucky they may offer to restructure it, if they do i would definitely get 3rd party advise before you sign anything. good luck

Hi, We are in the process of moving to Dubai from HK. Should be there in couple of weeks time. I really liked Executive towers and my husband has been there to view the apartments and really loved it. Currently we are negotiating for the rents. Just one quick question about Empower Demand Charges - is it a norm for LL to pay it? How much would it be approx for a 3BHK (1945sqft) one in Tower G and does it come as part of normal Empower bill or it gets added in the Maintenance Service charge that the LL pays? Our agent is not giving any clear replies. Just keeps saying you pay only the bill that Empower sends which has ONLY consumption charges in it. Demand Charges are part of Maintenance. But when I see Empower sample bill on their site, it shows Demand charges as part of normal bill. So I am confused. Anyways, look forward to making lot of friends when I am there. I have two kids - 4Yr old daughter and 1Yr old son. So hope to find more kids their age to play. Tenants pay the full empower bill which includes consumption which isn't bad, there is a quarterly fee which is the expensive part i can't remember what its called but tenants pay that also, it was about 500 for a one bed so i assume its more for a 3bed. All buildings with empower work like this, so that is all of business bay. I think in downtown it is part of the LL service charges. Exec towers is a great location now that it is finished!

Have you read the (JK Rowling) Robert Galbraith books? I really enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling and just starting The Silkworm. The Good Father by Noah Hawley is an interesting read. Pure whimsy but the 100 Year Old Man that Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared is also quiet good. Star of the Sea by Joesph O'Connor is excellent. You may have read this already as they aren't new titles.
