Actually, you have the entitlement to 45 days maternity leave at 1/2 pay before one year of service.

Texas is only .08% desert. It's a common misconception that TX is all desert. There's no state income tax there, which is beneficial. Houston in particular is where the job market has remained strong despite the downfall elsewhere.

Checked baggage is much cheaper and to the US it is allowed (to the UAE is another story). Just for reference, I brought my dog to the UAE from Qatar as cargo and it cost me nearly twice what I paid for her as checked baggage from the USA to Qatar. She only weighs 7kg. You don't need a pet relocator to take or send your dog. The paperwork is a bit tedious, but it isn't impossible. In fact, financially, it might be cheaper to travel with her and come back to the UAE rather than send her via a relocator. I was quoted $3000 to bring my dog to the UAE from the US by a relocator. You can also book cargo yourself, so if you can't travel with your dog and someone can pick her up on the other end, that is a cheaper option than a door to door relocator.

What others spend their money on is none of our business, but I think there's a simple answer to why anyone separated from their family for 11 months of the year would buy them flashy, expensive gifts. Simply put, a child is going to be much happier showing his or her friends the new phone or toy their absent mother bought them and largely unimpressed by having a new front door or even an education. Material gifts aren't everything for a fully cognizant adult, but to a child they are important, particularly if they don't really know their parent (just think of children of divorce living away from a parent). The gifts are a material reminder to the daughter that she is thinking about her and that her time away is worth something prestigious and valuable. It sounds like your maid is in touch with what will make her daughter happy and proud of her mom, even if it's not what will make her happy or proud in the very long term. I say this as someone whose father worked away from home for months at a time when I was a child. Gifts mean a lot of a child, and more so when the parent isn't around to be demonstrative in other ways.

Thanks nixdxb. I hadn't thought of there being many Buddhists here. edited by marhaba on 04/03/2014

Has anyone heard of a family requesting a vegetarian maid? Are there many maids from vegetarian backgrounds in the UAE (Hindu, Jain, etc.)? We aren't vegetarian for religious reasons, but we don't cook meat at home (mixed diet home) and wouldn't want to employ someone who had a major problem with not having meat at home (i.e. thought we were starving her). For obvious reasons, a vegetarian would be a good match for us. edited by marhaba on 01/03/2014
