Easiest and less stressful to have children's reins, these are also very helpful to avoid children falling and hurting themselves badly. , may be available in mothercare / Toys r us or places where baby children's goods are sold.

Hi ShellFC Could I please come over to see you sails ? My number is Zero 5 Zero 64 zero threee , five , one , three. Thank you We have 2 large sail type shades put over our pool and garden. They are fab, and we wouldn't be able to use our garden half as much if we didn't have them. I think we paid about AED 10,000 for both, but they are huge, three large pillars holding them up and anchored to the house in two places. Ours were done by Hydroturf who I think got a sub-co tractor to do it, not sure as they did our landscaping at the same time. Also, our pool stays much cooler than others because of the shades. Welcome to come and have a look at them.

We have been turning our villa up side down looking for my daughters turtle/tortoise but still cannot find it but we are not near Palmera. Our tortoise was orginally found in Mirador some months ago and needed a home so we took it in. I fear the dog may have picked it up when she got into my daughters bedroom but still looking in the villa in hope. If you do not find the owner let me know and maybe we could take it off your hands. McB Hi I found a turtle in Arabian ranches in the middle of the street by Palmera 3 by the lake. is it yours??? he is safe at our home right now so no worries. just want to return him to his rightful owner.

My measurement in the garden in the Sun today reached 56 c degrees c and is the highest I have noticed over the past few weeks, highest prior was 55 c some days but humidity is still low compared to previous years. I did not check the temp in the shade today. The lower the humidity the easier to cope. My garden thingy was over 50c this afternoon (AR). Don't know how accurate it is though...

Water heaters should last longer than one year, but if it is turned on with the heater mode on all the time it may not. Get out your receipt and contact the office maintenance manager for the company. Water heaters here are not made to last or have them switched on all day .

Things change in Dubai rapidly especially during the summer period. Suggest you check old threads or current one regarding babysitting on main board for contact numbers. Possibly ask in a new thread in late August / September when most people will be back. Good luck with your move

Firstly, It may depend on what house you are in and what way that room is facing. If the outside walls are in the sun most of the day and windows are large it would have an impact. It does not make sense when you refer to two air con units, therefore I assume you have put in an additional one yourself into the same room. Is the bedroom sharing an air con with another room ? Unfortunately, these systems installed , sharing air cons is not very efficient. Do you keep the window and door closed at all times ? Do you have think curtains and black out lining that helps to keep the sun/heat out ? If it has a bathroom on suite, Is this door closed at all times ? Check the bedding , it needs to be light in weight, some people still use 4.5 tog rated quilts in the summer and if one does , the room may need cooler air conditioning. If the spare bedroom ( depends on the villa your in and size of bedroom) has just started to be air conditioned it can take a number of days to get the temp down and then it will work better. ( this I find with a room in our villa ) but I keep curtains closed . Hope these pointers help you. In Arabian Ranches the coolest we can get the bedroom to (spare small bedroom but with two air con units) is 23 degrees. I am sure our last villa got cooler. At 23 degrees we practically have to have it blowing all night on high. The room is just about cool enough to sleep but I am concerned about the bill as well as if it can only do 23 degrees now what will it be in August? 28 degrees?! Tool Time came out and said it will not cool the room anymore are they talking rubbish? Would love to know what temp people set their aircon to and what the room gets to at night?

Thanks McB. I will try to see her. Would you say she is progressive in her approach to treatment and does she go beyond conventional methods to understand what is going on with you ? Nikki63, keen on knowing how was it found out you were not converting T4 to T3. Is there a test for this? My experience with her is she looks at one as a whole person so it is important to give the whole picture. I am very happy so far so good.

I do feel in time the parameters will alter and more people will be treated fo either over active or under active conditions. Like everything it takes time and effort to get things to change for the better. Too often people are either not diagnosed or are misdiagnosed and have suffered for many years. For women it is frequently confused with other conditions as peri menopause is one of them.

Not sure about competitive/repetitive in funerals or rosters ticking off or doing what's right for you all are all new ones for me to read. For Christian funerals and The culture I come from , people learn from an early age about funerals and children attend them not like some other cultures where parents don't want to upset their children by taking them to a funeral. One is not necessarily going to the funeral just for the dead and to be seen but to support the living who may need you and not ask for you to come as they may think it is expecting too much if you live far away, such as 0,000 of miles away. As regards social able depending on where one may come from yes some Christian funerals are social able and that is part of the funeral for families and friends, it is a celebration of the life of the deceased and also helps people deal with passing on to a better life as what is believed in Christian Faith. edited by McB on 23/04/2012

Just back from parent teacher meeting and am feeling deflated. I feel my son is struggling with his reading, yet the teacher just smiled and said, don't worry he'll get there. That's all very nice, but she couldn't really tell me exactly what he is struggling with or what I can do to help him. Just don't feel she really knew! So if his own class teacher isn't really interested, or even that clued up, where else can I go? Just feel I want a second opinion either to ease my concerns or flag up any real issues. Advice ladies? Thanks x Do you read to and listen to you child read every day ? Do not leave it just to school to do. Ask a teenager to help him if you cannot. If after a big effort and a month or two and no progress then maybe get him properly assessed. My son had a lot of difficulty and I stuck to my guns and it was a battle with his teacher as she introduced free reading which he could not handle and eventually she gave in to what I kept suggesting ( as I knew my child) and he went back onto Oxford reading tree ( UK system) at a low level and we rebuilt his confidence on that system and slowly intro duced other books much later on.. He did not become what I would describe a confident reader until about 8.5 years old and he is excellent now and studying at University and is very good at English.

umm- was someone very very close and family - basically my beloved Gramps, who i love dearly. He was ill and old so it wasn't unexpected - he was 94 - just not sure what to do........ Families are about supporting one another through good times or bad. People need to learn to attend funerals and how to deal with them but more difficult in today's world when families live far apart. Certain countries place a big emphasis on funerals what ever their religion and friends appreciate when some one makes a big effort to be their for them showing support with the loss of their relative. Unless you are seriously ill and cannot travel it is a time when people need to get together and celebrate life and remember experiences with the deceased.

If you have not already looked, check out Repton both primary and secondary or DESC and primary DESS, they are in and near Silicon Oasis and The Villa's and nearer Sharjah. There may be other schools people may suggest you can look at. Not always easy to get both children into same location in Dubai. Depending on when your 13 yr old will be 14 , the child could be in year 7 or year 8 in British Curriculum but school will advise what is best. Good luck.

Maybe it's me - but what's the difference between no airconditioning and there is not airconditioning? Read the sentence Sharm will be more tolerable but there is not air conditioning like there is in Dubai One cannot compare Sharm standards for holiday makers to Dubai's standards for Holiday makers and I not just referring to Hotels. edited by McB on 09/04/2012

No airconditioning? Of course there is! If you go to any of the big hotels and even most of the smaller ones, they will of course have AC. The last few times we went to Sharm we rented a chalet in a compound called Delta Sharm - its a resort community. There are mangement offies that rent out apartments and houses on behalf of the owners. There are loads of pools, a shuttle to the beach, and also shops and restaurants. If you're only going for a week one of the beach resort hotels might be easier - there are many. If you're thinking about one of the Hiltons, I'd suggest Hilton Fairuz - it's right on the beach. Hilton Dreams is closeby, but across the main road from Fairuz so not directly on the beach. Personally I'd not want to stay at Hilton Waterfalls - its up on the cliff which is beautiful but not as much action as the main part of town. I believe all of the Hiltons have Kids Clubs to keep the little ones entertained. Shop around for good deals - the low tourism to Egypt at the moment is leading to some incredible vacation deals! Read the text ! no one said no air conditioning . but there is not air conditioning like there is in Dubai

My advice is maybe and only maybe let her at the weekend, not during the week as if you are new to employing a maid it can be difficult to pull back. The term Aunty means different things to different nationalities ( not necessarily a blood relative ). Get to know her alot better over months and in time review the situation.. edited by McB on 09/04/2012

We are considering Sharm El Sheikh as an option for first week of July holiday. We are used to the heat, and spent last summer (Late July) in Oman, but wondering just HOW hot it gets. Have done some searches and it says high 30's which doesn't seem that bad to me. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of it during the summer months they could share. Thanks. edited by MrsMopp on 09/04/2012 Arabs from the Gulf go to Egypt to escape the heat as it is cooler. Sharm will be more tolerable but there is not air conditioning like there is in Dubai, take a hand fan.

Such a shame this has happened but unfortunately the stress people are under especially in today's world may push them to do things that may not always be the best thing to do. If you would consider doubling her salary it makes me wonder was the salary very very low. I am not asking you to tell me the salary but doubling a maids salary when giving a decent salary in their terms for most employers may not feasible.I have recently looked for a maid and some wanted 2500 dhs ,plus plus plus and flight home every year and others wanted to go work part time every day in anothers persons home and some wanted husbands living with them. It is becoming more and more expensive to employ maids and I fear they may become too expensive for many to employ hence opportunities for work/earning may be lost for some maids who really need the work. Times are very tough !

Thanks for the advice JShep. Was just worried about making it too expensive for them to get there with taxi etc :) I am with you on this, it is too expensive for these maids and if on a visit visa she will probably not be earning. if one wants to be a good employer start well, either go and meet them and interview them there or bring them back to your home. For a first timer my advice to you would be interview them in a Mall easy for them and when you eventually decide and offer the job bring them to your home. I am not new to this and have been very fortunate with anyone I have employed over many years. It is not fair to expect a maid who may never have lived away from home to find a place in Dubai especially when taxi drivers may not even know the area's, if there is no public transport you need to assist them. Arabian Ranches now has a bus service but did not for a number of years it is unreasonable for one to expect a maid to pay 40- 50 dirhams to use a taxi to get to some new developments in the edges of Dubai. I have been looking for a maid and will be employing soon and in similar situation to yourself,I met her in a Mall first. Good luck

My daughter will graduate in June 2013 (IB diploma) and wants to continue university in the UK. She is thinking to study pharmacy or biochemistry. But we have checked the entry requirements at various universities and with HL chemistry but SL biology and mathematics, it seems she will nowhere get accepted. So I am wondering how strict are these entry requirements? She is very motivated to study pharmacy or biochemistry and has good grades (6 or more). Any experience or suggestions how to deal with this? Should she still try to switch to HL biology, although I am not sure if this is still possible (she is now in year 12 at DIA)? Or can she convince the university admission office with here good grades (although some at SL) and her personal statement? I really hope she can pursue the university course she likes in the country she prefers. .............2. If we are now supposed to help, which I think is the right thing to do, wouldn't it be prudent/necessary to get everyone to have basic first aid skills? Especially motorists should have a mandatory first aid course as part of their training, shouldn't they? Do any of you know now, if we are allowed to give first aid , without risking going to jail/ being sued etc. ? What are your thoughts on giving/receiving first aid and do you think courses should be mandatory for all motorists? edited by Lilli34 on 01/03/2012 This is an excellent idea to have mandatory first aid as part of driving licence and do not know if it part of the licence in any country in the world. First aid should be part of a school curriculum like math or lanuage and properly taught. I know many people would write many things should be taught in school but unfortunately some things that were taught in schools years ago sadly are not any longer for various reasons. The last official course I did was about 15 years ago just before I left the UK but would be out date now and then i found things had changed compared to the previous course I did. It is very very sad indeed when people do walked passed incidents and do nothing or do not want to get involved. We all need help at some point in our lives and maybe a strangers help is required and hope if anything ever happened to my family a stranger would come forward and assist as I would expect and have raised my family to do the same wherever they live and whatever the laws. We need to be kind and humane and help one another what ever the laws. Dialling for police /ambulance is a start.

Welcome to Dubai :-) It is probabbly harmless but I think I would have left without the pills as well. After living here a while you will realize that this kind of discussions are useless. Getting upset about it just wastes your time and energy. On a sidenoteand living in Dubai with all its sunshine: you should go out and spend at least 10 minutes a day outside in the sun and forget about the pills... Debbie, I really need your number :) reading yr post made me feel better.. it was just a waste of my time yah, u r right!! and YES energy too.. I was upset when I came home, look how many bad cells I have produced in my body b/c of that.. its frustrating though.. anyway, as for th esunshine, appreantly b/c of the sunshine int he gulf, people tend (me too) to put a lot of sunscreen on which makes then vitamin D difficient.. my level is 12 while my doctor would like to see them at 75!! Amalwaleed You need to be very careful and know exactly what you are taking. If you levels are that low that is what you have been advised to boost and then regular sun would help maintain unless doctors advises continuing for some medical reason. If you have purchased only 12 tablets, this is a very low number but depends on what you are supposed to be taking. Is it D 3 OR D 2 OR D something else your USA doctor prescribed ? Up to last year D2 was only available in a few hospitals in Dubai , City Hospital is one of them but do not know about now if D 2 is available in the wider market now and that may be why the pharmacy put them in a dispense bottle as they came from another location or from a bigger jar which is not unusual in Europe .Maybe if you use your USA prescription or go to a doctor here for one you may be lucky and claim it on your insurance( not always possible though). Vit D 3 , 1,000 IU , Now brand , 180 soft gels price 85 Dirhams in Dubai For me living in the middle east it is easier to get medication instead of always having to pay to see a doctor to get a prescription and doctors visits are expensive when one has to pay for them as not all countries have a system where government covers costs or most of the cost.

I am really touched by so many ladies on here sharing their own stories. It really saddens me however seeing how many children go through this. I really can't understand how some kids can be so nasty!! Neither can I, and then they become adults . Some lose the nastiness but others don't. Bet surveys in the work place would demonstrate that some adults are nasty but do not think they are .Some people think we should all be tougher in nature but there is only so much a person can take. I look forward to learning how things have gone for you, the more people stand up and tell those who need to know and can deal with it the better. Too many will say I am just pulling your leg or its a joke but you turn the same on them and they do not like it at all. Stamp out this type of awful abuse ! It makes me very cross it is allowed to go on in society.
