As of yesterday I received 93 queries on my maid. It looks as if she has found a new job now, pending visa transfer. Thank to everyone who contacted me and apologies for not getting back to everyone sooner. Good luck with finding someone, i know it is not easy.

The fine is AED 100 per day per person. I would sort this out with Immigration before you try to leave. From April to now is a long overstayand they might not look too kindly on it.

Best one I had was some man claiming to be from Etisalat telling me I had won a million dirham. I smelt a rat as he was ringing from a DU mobile.:)

Went through this earlier this year with a friend visiting from London who thought she would tag along with me to Shanghai. You can no longer get a tourist visa for China in UAE unless you have a UAE resident visa. So if you are thinking of going there you should apply whilst you still are a resident here.

It .could also have something to do with the fact that they would like to meet the madam before they commit. After all it is you they will be working with day in and day out. Maybe better to wait until you get here

My maid just lined up this am from 6 and was told that the first available appt was on July 21st! Passport would then be available in late Sept. Anyone else had this experience lately?

Thanks ClaireHDP, it came from one of those 'manager' style maids in our street! I thought it was wrong, but hoped someone here had recent expeience of a renewal. Did your maid need to go and make an appointment to renew?

I don't believe they sterilise anything properly, so I take my own equipment, base coat, polish etc and I keep a tube of antibiotic cream in the bag and apply to each toe after the pedi/mani dries. Sounds paranoid, but I've had a painful post pedi infection here and don't want another one.

I think letting go for some people is very hard. Perhaps it's made harder if your life is not hugely full. I don't care if people who left continue to post, but I do notice that there are a few who seem to do so only in a very negative way. Major Dubai bashing goes on which seems to come under the category of flogging a dead horse. Edited to add that by hugely full I mean the difficulties of resettling and finding a new circle of friends, feeling part of a place again/ setting up in a new location etc. edited by mejane on 06/04/2011

It had a very good review in Time Out last week, so we went there on the weekend. Enjoyed the meal, the service was good and liked the decor. The reason the walls are high although I remember them as being trellis, is I imagine because of the rule that you can't drink alcohol in public view. Their licence is being put through by the Intercontinental they told us.

I'd say Falcon Jumeirah Shawarma outlet, by the mosque at Iranian Hospital. The best I've had in Dubai besides the IKEA one. I've had brilliant shawarma here.

There is often a little ironing shop near mosques. There is a great one down the side of Spinneys Al Wasl (near the plant shop). They iron brilliantly and are very cheap.

A liberal dose of common sense should have told her that no matter how good she thought she looked, it was going to be unacceptable. Does anyone look out the window and think about where you are? Tis true!
