Thanks ladies for your responses, That makes sense! The reason we were starting bathtime at 7.30pm was so that my husband gets to spend a little time with her when he comes in from work. He doesnt get in until 6.30 or so so if we were to do bathtime at 6pm / 6.30pm, then he would never see her and vice versa... :(

Ladies I have just seen your replies - thanks so much. I have the Ergo and find it good but a little hot... but Its true that its sooo much easier to have her in that than having to carry her all the time. Its true, they are so little for such a short period of time - but it is quite tiring having to carry her all the time... Thanks again ladies!

I didnt test positive for Strep B but I did test positive for strep. When my waters broke for this reason I was told to go directly to the hospital so they could administer the antibiotic, even though the labour could have taken hours. They say its best to administer the 1st dosage asap and a 2nd dosage 4 hours later to be on the safe side which is what happened to me....

DCC did you always make your bottles fresh? Someone mentioned that we could mix the formula with just a little boiled water in advance, refrigerate them and add boiled water to them later when required? Where did you get the Dr Brown bottles? We bought some in BS but they were the narrow teats and it seems to be very long so the poor thing seems to gag on it :( Apparently there are wider bottles that you can get but BS didnt have any.. Yes reflux really is awful - its heartbreaking to see her like that. What age is your LO? Reflux can last for months from what I have heard?

Thanks ladies - all that is very helpful. My LO is 7 weeks tomorrow and still suffering very badly from reflux and wind. Her awake time is generally spent writhing in pain after a feed :( so is generally in my arms all throughout the day. When she sleeps, she falls asleep on me and then sleeps uneasily from what we gather is wind as she is also wriggling and moaning a lot - - not just newborn moans but really sounds like she is in discomfort. We are trying out lots of different ways to soothe her but it really is hit and miss. She has hit an all time high this week the poor thing with projectile vomiting! Its just so hard to see her like this and unable to help her. That's why I was wondering if it would be better to get her up earlier to see if she would settle earlier and maybe sleep better during the night as from generally 5am, she is very unsettled. I understand all babies are different and Im sure it's probably due to her tummy problems but this week she has been awake a LOT during the day. TDB, make the most of your LO's cycle! It sounds like heaven :)

Mrsg1, What age did you start trying to put him into a routine? Did it work by getting him up earlier? Im not sleeping much myself so her late sleeping gives me a chance to sleep a little more then get ready for the day but if I thought it would settle her earlier in the evening then I would def give it a try....

Thanks Daza, I wondered about that. Its very difficult to get her to sleep though at the moment and the only way she will drift off is either in our arms on on our chest! In the beginning this was always in a light room but I find she drifts off quicker if the curtains are closed..... She also sleeps longer in a dark room but wakes after a few minutes in a room with lots of light. Everything is worth a try though!

Hi all, Thanks so much for all of your replies. Very much appreciated. Im a newbie so its all a learning curve for me! Things are definitely getting easier the last week - she seems to be settling a lot more so thats good and DH is doing a night feed which means Im getting more sleep YAY! I just wanted to see if there were any further things I could be doing to make it easier or more predictable - for her more than anything but lets wait a while and see how things go. Thanks again for all the advice!

Oh my, DCC how did you manage during that time? It must have been awful for you? Thankfully for both of you, he is doing better now. I would be grateful for the Gaviscon if that would be ok? I didnt know it was a milk thickener - do you need to change the bottle teat to allow for the thickened milk?

My LO is now 6 weeks old and we have problems with colic and bad reflux so things have been challenging up to now. However, I would like to start into a routine to try to settle her a little more and am wondering what is the best way to go about it? She is generally not settling for the night until about 10pm or 10.30pm. She will go between 2 hours to 2.5 hours between feeds at night as long as she has no wind problems and will sleep until maybe 6am where she starts to get very agitated and her sleep for the rest of the morning is again very agitated sleep (I imagine this is due to wind problems but again I am guessing). Sometimes she will sleep late into the morning (with feeds every 2 - 2.5 hours) and sometimes she will awake about 8am in grumpy form for the day, probably due to tiredness. Also, as she was breastfed until very recently, she has taken up the habit of snack feeding so she is taking half a bottle, not wanting more and then getting hungry about an hour later. Are there any methods of getting her into the habit of taking a full bottle so she will go longer between feeds? Please do not suggest trying to make her wait 5 minutes for her bottle when she is hungry as she is a very strong character baby (!!) and she screams when she is hungry! When she wants her bottle, she wants it NOW! So delaying the feeds just really isnt an option as she gets herself into such a state! I know things will get easier with time but I would like to get her into a routine from now on for her own good. Any tips or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated! TIA!

Can anyone help? We are at the end of out tether with the visa process for our nanny. Every day they tell me it will be ready tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow. Yesterday, they said that they need another piece of paperwork and now today they are saying that they need the receipt from the previous sponsors overstay fines, which we have but also an OUTPASS? What is an outpass??? Also, does she have to leave the country? She is being transferred from a non freezone to a freezone visa. every time we ask at the Tecom office, we get a different answer. This is really starting to drive me crazy! Can anyone help???

I delivered at City last month and honestly speaking, could not speak highly enough of them. My doctor was not based at City but the nursing care etc was top notch. Nurses were very friendly and competent with a very good bed manner. I know ppl have different experiences but mine at City really was excellent!

Thanks Evelyn2000 for posting that article. Very interesting. KW, I do watch out for signed of tiredness and they are very clear with DD but she is just impossible to get to sleep. At the moment, the only way she will fall asleep is after a feed. Very, very seldom she will go to sleep with rocking her or walking her about etc. Maybe this will change over the next few weeks but I do agree with you that in the evenings its often a case of being overtired. The poor little thing yawns her head off, has red eyes from tiredness but will consistently fight the sleep away until she is wide awake again....

Oh my gosh KW the below sounds very like our situation to be honest. She definitely gulps down the beginning of her feed and then falls asleep after a few mins. She also looks hungry after a very short time with her hands in her mouth. The part about her only liking being upright is also very true! The time she spends awake seems to be in pain with wind the poor little thing so it would be sooooo good to try to sort this out. Since yesterday I have started to feed on just 1 side for 2-3 feeds to see how it goes and she seems to be spitting up less so far. She still gulps down the 1st feed on either side as the supply is quite strong at that stage as she hasn't fed frm it for a # of hours but what u said below seems to make more sense than anything else so far. I have some gripe water that was sent to me but it says not to be used before 1 month. Would u recommend trying it with her at 1 month? Could it help her in ur opinion? We'll give it a couple of days trying block feeding on one side to see if it makes a difference. Fingers crossed!!! Thanks so so much - it really makes sense!!

Thank you so much ladies for your replies. She seems to change so much with her feeding & sleeping I wasn't sure if this is to be expected ... Daza congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope all goes very well for you! KW, we saw a good LC who checked for TT & there is no issue there. I was the poster on the newborn feeding erratically & got lots of advice on there too but just wondering how long this phase will last (I know no one can tell me but it would be nice to know lol). Her weight gain is crazy - 950gms in 2 weeks!!! Yes that's right, almost 1kg in 2 weeks! And she was a big baby to start with at 4kgs at birth so I think she IS getting enough to eat!! We have tried to introduce a dummy but she won't take to it? Do you have any pointers? She took to the bottle after a few tries (we are giving her 1 bottle a night of expressed milk to give me a break from all the BF) but she is just not taking to the dummy at all. Any tips on how to get her to take this would be fantastic! We will try to get her to stay awake a little more during the day to see if that helps at all. Tnx again for the advice! Always SO much appreciated from a newbie whose fumbling in the dark! Happy Christmas everyone!

Tnx SD, She's not crying (yet) but she does grunt awfully loud. I've noticed this generally starts to get louder and more of a continuous basis from around 4am onwards. It really looks as if she is trying to pass wind or have a bowel movement when she does it poor little thing! Just had another night of feeds every 1& half hrs to 1hr 45 mins! I hope she starts going longer between feeds soon! edited by Mmmmmm on 17/12/2012

Tnx so much ladies for all your responses. It really is very much appreciated! One more question - ppl have been giving me conflicting advice on this so would be good to hear your opinions. At this early stage would you suggest feeding from one breast per feed and emptying that side when possible or is it better to do eg 10 minutes each side? What do you think? Tnx so much!

One more question pls ladies - she often has her knees bent up close to her tummy - I've read that this can be a sign of trapped wind.... Are newborns prone to often having their knees close to their tummys pls?

Ladies tnx so much for your comments. Being a 1st timer, the uncertainty of whether its all normal is very disconcerting so having reassurance from you all makes such a difference! She has started to make quite a lot of grunting noises while feeding and falling asleep - I'm hoping this isn't linked to stomach pains or problems with passing wind / bowel movements. Swissroll, its funny you recommended that book. I have it. I just need to find the time to read it! About the burping, would you suggest burping half way through a feed or just at the end? I find if I do it just at the end, she risks spitting a lot up and then being hungry again 15 minutes later :( I was wondering about introducing a bottle of expressed milk at night to maybe try to catch up on some sleep (ask DH to do this feed obviously). Would you think its too early to do this? Despite how hard it is now, I would not have it any other way! edited by Mmmmmm on 15/12/2012

Ok WOW ladies the position seems to be key! Apparently she only likes to feed from one angle so by feeding her with the football hold from the other side, she seems to want to give it a try! BUT now I feel like the milk is diminishing on that side as its been a few days sonce she has fed from there. Is there anything I can do to restimulate the milk on that side? She has fed from there twice now since yesterday but needs to be topped up from the other side as there doesn't seem to be enough milk on that side. If I pump, will that stimulate production? Any tips would be fantastic! Tnx so much for all the advice! It really is invaluable to a first time like me!

Thanks so much ladies for all the tips. Had another rough night again last night - lots of crying. I think she has wind problems too and although we try to burp her lots, she still seems to suffer terribly - although only at night.... I have tried to get an appointment with Cecile but she is going on holiday and cannot see me :( I have made an appointment with someone else for tomorrow morning (earliest I could get) so lets see if she can help. I really hope so. The thing that is strange is that she was feeding fine on both sides for the 1st week and then just a couple of days ago, this started. Its all a learning experience - for both of us!!! Thanks again and any other tips or tricks you have would be eternally gratefully received :) x

Hi DC, Someone actually recommended one of these to me earlier but had never heard of them. How did you find it? Is it easy to feed while LO is inside? She is not one to like to be put down so I find I am carrying her a LOT! Im thinking of a sling to give me free hands to be able to do things around the house but also in the hope of being able to get out and about more without having to worry about feeding in public. Do you think the sling would help with these issues? Tnx so much

Oopsiedaisy I would also be very interested in hearing what company you are with as my quotes are also coming in very high... AXA was the "cheapest" so far but do not do direct billing for the 1st 9 months and also I have read some pretty negative feedback on here about AXA so am quite reluctant.... Any suggestions?

Good morning ladies and thanks for your comments, DR, Im so, so sorry to hear your story. What a horrendous situation to be in. However, you are such a good person covering what you can, while you can. So many people in this world would just wash their hands of the situation altogether. Thank goodness there are people like you in the world! Not to make light of things but this story has really made up my mind for me. It's silly to have to hear such a story to make things so clear in my head but thank you. I very much appreciate the time you have taken to comment. And I really hope that you find a way through this.
