Ginger at the ramada jumeirah is gorgeous but the hotel is never busy so there isn't really any atmosphere. Just been with DH and thoroughly enjoyed it. Starters, mains, 1 beer and large water for 262. Will be trying thiptara next

I really sympathise with you. I understand this rule a little, well at school but as you said, you had no notice. Disappointing the nursery didn't warn in advance. Try not to let it upset you though, it gets easier. The nursery DD went to preferred it if we dropped at the door and disappeared as it's easier all round, although they did make the odd exception. For example, if DD had been off ill recently. You'll get there x

Just ask her, she probably won't mind if you're paying her extra. If not why not work out some weekday date nights and keep the weekend for family time? Good luck anyway

Another one to add to Dubai Tragedies http://thatguynoman-blog.com/2013/05/13/dubai-tragedies-based-on-real-life-accounts is this the same one you posted on the other thread ?? sorry but in my opinion it's an inappropriate use of the word tragedy - it's been done before, and better, anyway !! It's the same one but I didn't post it, just read it and it made me smile. Not sure what you mean by inappropriate use of the word. For me it's tragic just what annoys folk over here. sorry, my mistake... The original was called Expat problems or something - a tragedy for me usually involves a death or horrible accident...not breaking a nail...just my opinion. WOW! It's just a word. Sadly more linked to death but so are a lot of other words. I'll consider myself well and truly told off. Good day

Dubai's best kept secret was that fish resturant just off beach road.. however, now that people know about it , its over priced, rubbish food and so busy you have to wait over an hour if you dont get there at 5.30 to stand in line.. I remember when it cost 15 dirhams to buy a whole locally caught fish, cooked beautifully.,. Now AED 150 per kilo for bullet like prawns everything is thrown in the deep fat fryer and cremated.. awful awful place. some secrets are best kept as secrets. Absolutely. Also, wasn't this the shack that charged you by your nationality? Bang out of order! Never been back Unfortunatly they do. would never go back to this racist joint,. Does the cashier ask to see your passport? I think my voice and skin colour might give me away

We get a fresh fish delivery on our street every Saturday. He's a friend of my maid and supplies to all the maids on our row along with the families if we put our orders in early. I've tried the fish market on a Friday morning and although it's fun they just rip me off. I got a whole Tuna from the fish man for 40 dirhams. At the market they wanted 200!!!

This should be made into a sticky by admin as the topic comes up every time there is a public holiday. To cover the range of opinions It should go something like this: - You do not have to give your maid the day off, time off or money in lieu - that is what the law says - But you know, well, it would be nice if you did but it is up to you - Some families need their maid to work as it is a busy time with 100's of visitors, but you know they will make the equivalent their whole years salary in Eid money / tips from grateful guests - Some families give the maid a week off with breakfast in bed every morning to assuage their guilt at actually employing someone - If you actually do employ someone you should do the above as a penance for giving someone a job - Most people just work it out - whatever works for them as a family and seems fair That just about covers the range of opinions in answer to this frequent question. edited by Genie on 07/10/2013 Cracking response - I'm in between 4 and 6 :) edited by Mollydxb on 07/10/2013

It doesn't matter what fancy restaurants, hotels or bars I take my visitors to, they always remember this one place an ALWAYS want to return to it. If its where I think it is, that's one of my favourite places to takes visitors. I love the fact it's never busy and has such a feel of the real Dubai. It could well be and if it is the same place you will understand why I'm not revealing the name. If ever I walked in and couldn't be seated I would not go back as much as I do :)

Stop panicking. There are lots of schools here with places. My friend has just this week been offered places at 4 different British schools. Do you know where you'll be living in Dubai? Seriously! Don't panic and start looking forward to it. It's a lovely place to live. Just bear in mind you will need to budget for schooling over here if you don't already in the uk. For those who come over from state schools it can be quite a shock.

My friend did it. Said it took ages to get paid back, but she got to go to some nice places. A friend of mine had the same issue. They had to pay up front and claim back. Sometimes took 6 months to get back. Not good when you're visiting restaurants in the Burj Al Arab. They stopped it because of this

I agree with FairyDusts post on this. Has he said no way at all ever? or has he said in 5 years time? He's only 32 and she is only 29! That's young to me. Although I would have had kids earlier my DH certainly wasn't ready (in many ways) and I'm so glad I waited.

Hi Fairydust, I can't remember how much on arrival but if you do it online beforehand it's 30USD per person. Under 12's are free. I would highly recommend doing this unless you really don't mind queing. It takes approx 2 minutes online. Apparently it's 35USD on arrival edited by Mollydxb on 29/09/2013

Have always had our tree up, however tiny the children have been and they've never bothered with it....Just say no the first time, if they do... Children love Christmas trees, would be a shame not to have one... Now, cats is another story...... lol Agreed, Cats and Christmas tree's are a nightmare! My DD didn't bother much with it either. She did touch it a few times but then got bored. The Irish Village have a HUGE Christmas tree and it ends up with loads of cats in it. Quite funny playing spot the cat with DD. Rambling..............

If you feel comfortable doing it then negotiate on the labour price. Just mention you're getting quotes and they will probably reduce the price to get your business there and then.

I've just had DD 4th Birthday Party. Invited a few from her nursery and the kids on our road. We had 12 in the end and the number was perfect. Food - 2 x Pizza, Chicken Nuggets, Fries, Ice Cream, Jelly, Brownies, Dips and Vegetables for mums, juice and squash. Entertainment - Large snakes and ladders board (xmas pressie), Bubble Machine (xmas pressie), Face Painter (recommended on here) 200Dhs , DD bedroom full of toys, Pass the Parcel (used Carrefour for the gifts) Party Bags - Went to Carrefour in the party section and bought silly nik naks (balloons, balls, happy clappers etc...) Cake - Ordered from Park & Shop 120Dhs Decoration - Happy Birthday sign and a few balloons The kids were busy for the whole 2 hours just playing together. They were up and down the stairs like yoyo's. We did have musical statues to play too but they weren't bothered. They were having too much fun together. I was quite well prepared for it so managed to relax throughout the whole party. It was great and the kids had a really good time. I spent between 1000-1200Dhs all in all

It's all common sense isn't it? I personally wouldn't want to see anyone's a$$ cheeks or their bobbies hanging out when dropping my DD off at school, slim, medium or overweight. Not something I'd lose sleep over but come on!! It's a school.

I never thought I could have a live in maid for the same reasons but it works so well for us. She lives in a good sized room off the house so isn't in the house all the time. You just have to discuss with her what you want her to do and when you don't need her to be there. For example, Friday and Saturday I try and give my maid off but she's always sneaking in the house when we're out to either clean the pots or put another wash on. She also looks after DD some evenings so I'll tell her to take some time out in the week, she never does as she treats this time with DD as leisure anyway. I can't really think of any cons apart from having to use the back garden to store the bikes rather than the maids room. Good Luck and don't stress. You'll figure it out

There's a villa close to al ghazal mall available. I'll get the number off it when I drive past later. If you're coming down al Wasl road, turn right as if your going to al ghazal mall, take the next right and it's around the 6th villa on the right. Mosque is very close though. It's been to let for a while though so I guess there is something wrong with it or too expensive. Anyway, will get the number and re-post As the other ladies said. You need to call all the time. I became such a nuisance to the Arenco lady I think she just caved in the end. Well worth it though. I got the linkedin one too! He made out he was interested in my business and was pushing to meet in a hotel lobby to discuss it ( I never meet clients without going through a questioning process as I might not be the right person they want to talk to) I kept asking and asking just exactly what did he want to talk to me about? If we have a meeting I need to bring along the correct information/paperwork etc.... He was a nuisance and was getting frustrated with me because I wouldn't meet. He eventually blurted out "Have you got a savings plan?" I was quite angry with the tactics used as maybe another woman would have just gone! Not cool at all.

Ha ha ha I was telling my very good friend back in England about this site and that it can be really useful for newbie's and great for info on anything as the ladies are really helpful. He couldn't resist but go on and have a look at the forum. His words were something along the lines of..... "It's really good actually but some of those women are just vile!" and he insisted that they were probably men posting just for laugh. Obviously he's never seen mumsnet.... edited by spongemonkey on 06/09/2013 I have never seen mumsnet!!!
