We usually buy the small packages of frozen turkey, but it is just like a loaf, not a whole turkey. Still comes out nice. I have seen them at spinneys, abella and car4

You are kidding right? Since witchcraft and black magic type stuff is a highly punishable offence in UAE, do you really think you will find voodoo stuff here...or anyone who will admit to it?

Isn't this a British English vs American English thing? Learned is to American English as learnt is to British English. Both having the same use and meaning.

I believe that you are in the clear if you cancel and see that she leaves the country. However, how is she planning on getting a tourist visa? I think she has to be sponsored by some family member that earns enough money in order to get back here on a tourist visa.

LittleAngel... your DD is 12 years old and in 3rd grade? Aren't 3rd graders more like 8 or 9 yrs old? There is a big difference between a 12 year old and an 9 year old in maturity. If she earns an allowance then let her save up, and then when she earns half the value you could offer to pay the other half, and take out half of the monthly package rate from her allowance. Then you will see how badly she really wants the phone. On laptops, our DD finally got her own at age 13 (after saving for half of the price), because I was sick of her taking my laptop to school for her presentations.

Was just going to say that if his crime has not been reported to interpol, then there is really no way for border control to know anything about a crime he committed in his home country. Glad you found your answer. edited by momof3 on 31/10/2011

A housewife can work with an NOC from her husband, but NOT as a housemaid/nanny. There are very different regulations regarding housemaids than nearly any other worker. Housemaids are not governed by ministry of labor, so rules don't apply. They are under the ministry of immigration.

It is not on the corniche beach (which is what AAQ is probably referring to), but the Shangrila does have their own private beach. There is more than one beach area in Abu Dhabi.

Pumpkins, butternut squash, acorn squash...none are like spaghetti squash. They are all missing the ability, after cooked, to be forked out into wonderful strands of "spaghetti" that use to fool my children into eating veggies. if you roast this one whole - it kinda does that :) Try it If it comes out even similar I will be thrilled! Will give it a try. Thnx :D

If I remember correctly, when you go onto itunes there is an option that shows purchased or previously purchased. If you go there it should show all movies purchased from your itunes account and give you the option to download to current device. edited by momof3 on 13/09/2011

Agree with another poster that most spices are available here, like cumin and italian, but mexican chili powder is impossible to find. Also, the ranch dressing powder. Also, chili seasoning does exist, but I don't think it tastes right. I am partial to Williams brand, which there is nothing similar here.

You can use your tv here; however, you must put it through a voltage converter and request a satellite box that puts out an ntsc signal. We have 2 tv's from the US that we have been using here for 3 years.

My children all have savings accounts and debit cards with NBAD. They wouldn't let me open them, though. Had to be signed by their father, they said this is per central bank guidelines. Also, my DH had to sign power of attorney letters on each account giving me the right to make transactions on behalf of my children. It was weird, but at least it is done now. Did the age play a role? Mine r under 10 Mine are 13, 7, 5 and 8 months. Maybe because my DH is local?

Real barbies. The selection here is dismal and the prices extremely high. They have other dolls but super cheap quality and weird faces. Also, I have a particular brand of chili seasoning that I bring cause can't find it here. If you find good sales on kids clothes then stock up, cause they are rather expensive here.

I bought medela ones at babyshop, but really didn't have great success with them. I thought he was feeding fine, but he was not gaining weight, staying jaundice and bowel movements slowed down. Come to find out these medela shields are made of a thick silicone so he was latching but having to use so much effort to get the milk that he would just give up and sleep instead of continuing to try. Anyway, there are ones in car4 by a french company called tigex, which are much thinner material and were much easier for my baby. Good luck with what works for you.

My 5 year old DD's purse was taken from the cinema bathroom. Like yours, obviously a child's bag, and less than 5 minutes until we realized it was gone. Pretty sad state of the society when honesty and integrity are not well taught.

Try taking the car's VIN and doing an online search. It could be that he bought a trashed car from overseas, fixed it here, and then reselling it. My husband refuses to even consider buying a used car here because this is a wide practice here. We brought our cars to the shipper in the US to load in container and we saw a bunch of junkers being containered as well. The shipper told us he ships tons of these cars for a couple of clients heading here and to a few other middle eastern countries as well.

My neighbor's maid is going through the process of getting a job in Canada. It takes a long time. There is a program in Canada for bringing in domestic help... Must have equivalent of Canadian equivalent 12th grade education (verified), fluent english, specialized work experience for many years (cant remember how many) and employer must be able to prove they cannot find an equivalent person to hire in Canada (taking out ads and trying to hire locally). Also, maid has a financial outlay herself of several thousand dhs. All paperwork and fees go to Canadian embassy here, and the wait is appx 1 1/2 years for the visa. Also, min wage, hours worked, etc do apply of course. Neighbor's maid started the process about 6 months ago, and hoping it will go through when she finished her local contract next summer.

To OP, was the divorce particularly nasty? I have a friend who divorced her husband, and he wasn't very happy about it. Her mother became very ill and she left her kids with a good friend for a week to fly out to help her mother. The ex then promptly filed charges against her for abandoning the children. It was a huge mess.

Anyone have a link to the article in gulf news? As to OP, I would get rid of her and use a pt agency until you leave. If she knows you are getting rid of her in December anyway, she has no incentive to do a good job for you. Also, some have just reached their expiration date after 2 years. I have friends who never renew contracts after 2 years anyway, cause they think the ladies get too familiar after this time and get lazy thinking they have become somehow part of the family.

Just another point... Even if the maid and husband live together in their own apartment, please make sure they have a valid certified marriage license, because if she gets knocked up they can. Still wind up in jail if they don't have all the proper documents. It happened in the news here recently.

I understood that a maid's husband could not legally stay in your home at all unless he worked for and sponsored by you. I know some who sponsor wife as maid and husband as gardner so that they can live together legally in the maid room. I would tell the maid's husband to get an apt and then pay her extra to live out with him if they are not both working for you. Would be much safer for you with the way the laws are here. edited by momof3 on 13/07/2011

are you sure it's 'tarhil'? there's no such word.. masuk=enter di saudi = into saudi kabur= blur karena tidak di gaji = because of didn't receive any salary S x edited by shjbelle on 11/07/2011 Thanks so much for your quick reply! It does say tarhil, and that is the one word that google translate couldn't get either. My husband speaks arabic, and thought it means something about "banned or deported"... so was a little concerned. Also, on google translate it showed kabur as also meaning "fled" as well as blur... so if I get the gist of it means basically that she left her job in saudi because she did not get paid. The worry part was about the "fled" and "banned"... edited by momof3 on 11/07/2011

I don't know if it is the same as Abu Dhabi or not, but in Abu Dhabi locals have a discounted rate for electricity and water, but only on the main. If a person has other properties, they are charged at the full normal rate. If you are trying to negotiate a reduced rate based on what the landlord is paying, then it may be that he is not discounted on the house you are staying in because it would not be the main house. Anyway, that is the case in Abu Dhabi, but really not sure if it is the same in Dubai.

I know from the embassy in abu dhabi that it is supposed to take 2 weeks, but they have usually had ours back in a week. Problem is that they passport has to go to the US to be renewed and then fedexed back, so takes a little time. Don't have experience going through the consulate in dubai, though. Good luck! edited by momof3 on 22/06/2011

Your account may have been hacked. It happened to me several times. My messaging stopped working, couldn't open games, and then finally couldn't add comments on posts. The first time I changed my password and the next day it worked. Several weeks later happened again... I changed associated email address and changed password again, and so far so good. I do know that someone hacked me because as soon as I changed my password the first time, about a week later got a notification that someone was trying to reset my password again. Good luck!! edited by momof3 on 22/06/2011

I'm going to read this thread to my husband tonight. What is he getting us into? Don't be too worried. There is plenty of shopping here. You will find a blend of international stores here, just don't expect every store from home, and definately expect the prices to be much higher for the same things you would buy at home. I moved from the US nearly 3 years ago. I do miss Target, Sam's Club/Costco, Hobby Lobby/Michael's/Garden Ridge, and definatley miss the bargains in the US, but you can still find everything you need.

Yes, agree, the bride doesn't usually arrive until well around 11pm! Lots of lovely outfits and dancing! (You know your DH will be in a separate place, right?) Good point. Usually the men's party and women's party are on different days as well as different locations. Maybe try to get a little more detail from DH. edited by momof3 on 21/06/2011

I opened an account with NBAD for our maid. It is a lady's savings account. They must have 1,000 to open it initially, but no minimum balance thereafter. No maintenance fees. She has had the account for about a year and a half now. No issues. I took her passport to the bank and did all the paperwork for her. All she had to do was sign the papers, and then be present to receive the mastercard and pin when it was available. Very easy.
