fullymine, calm down. It's ok. First give him a bath and monitor him. If you feel more confortable, you can call a doctor that will come to your place. Remember that an hospital is also a place where a lot of sick people are...be sure you it's worth to expose your baby to that. Do you have a pediatric doctor for your baby ? Can't you call him/her ? It will be best I would second this too - give him a bath, fill your tub with tepid water (water temp not higher than 37C) and let him sit on it and play for about 15 mins - use a cup and make his head and whole body wet, pouring water over his head as many times as you can - most of the heat gets lost from the top of our heads. Do not let him get cold after that, dry him thoroughly, check his temp again and take him to the hospital if you think he needs to be seen. Keep him hydrated, clear liquids are best, preferably water. I wish Dubai had a Nurse Line. Do you need a map? I can google it for you, let me know which hospital you are looking for and I'll send you a map. Good luck and keep us posted. <em>edited by MomOfTwins on 29/07/2011</em>

Picture this: The pink Evian kiosk thinghie that was at the mall a while ago, so people could take photos The camera, standing near one side corner of the kiosk A photographer, in front of the camera, taking a photo of someone (that is in front of the camera.) Me, with my 2 seven year olds, right behind the photographer. Here comes a lady with about 150 kids ( OK, OK, THEY WERE 5..)and stops in front of the person with the camera, and asks something The kids swarm her and the person all around.... ....and she gets my spot ( with the conivence of the photographer, obviously......) How can this happen? I gave up and left. <em>edited by MomOfTwins on 28/07/2011</em>

I would like to add that "a whole liter of water" is maybe a bit too much for a child? Ladies correct me if I'm wrong, but it might be a good idea to check him for diabetes, as drinking a lot of water is one of the symptoms......( as well as frequent urination).... http://www.diabetessymptomsonline.com/symptoms-of-juvenile-diabetes.htm <em>edited by MomOfTwins on 28/07/2011</em>

well... I think you may have hit on one aspect of Dubai that beggars belief - some bosses/ companies see some job roles as limited to certain nationalities. Architectural CAD especially. Added to that, a blanket approach to sending out CVs just isn't going to be effective - it's the job-hunting equivalent of junk mail... you may get lucky, but 95% will go straight in the bin. Did you call up the recipient to follow it up at all? Have you contacted a recruitment agent to do the leg-work for you (the "gulf-style" CV is the biggest con out there)? Agents will know who's recruiting and at what level, so it's often far more effective. Lastly, as I'm sure you know, construction is having a bit of a hard time at the moment. There are lots of candidates out there and many companies have a recruitment freeze on. Thanks for the tips...a recruitment agency is on my list for sure, just haven't contacted them yet (any recommendations?). My scope of attack is not limited to construction/CAD ( that's the beauty of my broad range of skills...) so I am fully capable of venturing into DTP and Graphic Design as well...again, lots of job postings out there, just no bites! You are so right. *Mode agent ON.* Thanks for the tips.

Maybe its summer, and things are slow? Dont worry, just keep trying , I am sure you will get responses soon ! I'm not losing hope quite yet ( just moved here 2 weeks ago....) but it's sort of disturbing....had to quit the best job I've ever had to move here.... I should expect no less ( maybe I'm too positive...LOL) than what I had back home!

And to clarify the butter yourself: melt a pound or two of butter in medium heat in a small saucier then use a ladle to skim off the white stuff that floats to the top. Use only the clear part, discard the solids/white stuff. Keep refrigerated and use as needed!

Found this at another forum, HTH ( I am learning, too!) The holy month of Ramadan starts in a couple of week (probably around 1st August subject to moon sighting) and I thought it worthwhile to provide some information to those who have not experienced this before. All countries in the Gulf are founded on the principles of Islamic law. However, they are tolerant to all faiths, and attract a vast number of expatriate workers from around the world, and have thriving tourism industries. For visitors or recent arrivals in the region Ramadan may be a new experience. Ramadan is a time when Muslims refrain from eating during daylight hours as an act of sacrifice that reminds them of the challenges of the poor. It is a time for generosity of spirit and a period when family ties are renewed and enhanced. Non-Muslims are not required to follow Islamic practices during Ramadan, but there are customs and regulations that should be observed by everybody. Non-Muslims are expected to respect the Muslim Ramadan practices by not eating, drinking, or smoking in front of Muslims or in any public place in the UAE during daylight hours. This includes your car. Transgressions can be fined. Independent eating establishments will not open until sunset, but many stay open into the early morning hours. Most food courts will be shut during the day, but you will find one or two places in each mall that are screened from public view but open. Most hotels will serve food in a location not in the public view during the daylight hours. Some hotels will not serve liquor during the month of Ramadan, but most in Dubai will serve alcohol after 8.00pm (later than in previous years and to be confirmed(. It seems that every year more and more places serve food during the day, but these will be screened from public view. Children, pregnant or breast-feeding women and people who are ill are not expected to fast, but please be subtle if giving children drinks or snacks in public. Live music is not permitted and you will find that many bars and restaurants are more low-key than usual. Obviously brunches stop for the month. As an alternative, you may wish to go to an Iftar buffet. These are laid on by hotels, although strictly speaking it is the meal for breaking fast in the evening. Driving during the late afternoon and early evening is best avoided if at all possible. The law states that everyone should work two hours less, but some have shorter hours and others expect non-Muslims to work a full day. Traffic can be heavy as people rush to get home for Iftar and can be even more erratic than usual. Women especially, should consider their attire during Ramadan. Skimpy clothing should not be worn at any time, but extra consideration should be given to our Muslim hosts during Ramadan. Business hours will be adjusted in consideration of Ramadan and the work hours are typically reduced. If you need to conduct any business during Ramadan, it would be wise to call in advance to verify the adjusted business hours. In the work environment, you may find it more difficult to schedule meetings. Best to assume that everything takes longer during Ramadan. The end of Ramadan will be marked by a three day public holiday, Eid al Fitr (probably from 29th August subject to moon sighting) and the first night will be dry (no alcohol served anywhere). It is a time of celebration.

Oh my! You will need help at first. The first three months are the worst - and that for two babies alone! Do you have friends and family close by? Are you thinking of hiring a nanny - or a second nanny? Where do you live?? I found out at 11 weeks. Came in for a regular checkup - my doc was out at a conferene so another doc came in to check the baby and during ultrasound he goes" Yeah, the babieS seem to be doing allright" - and I went: - aaahm, excuse me, there's only one in there..." LOL! Needless to say they had to bring in some water to calm me down as I was laughing profusely. Twins are a lot of fun but a lot of work!!! If you need help just email me scotiacad at gmail dot com and I'll email you back my phone #. <em>edited by MomOfTwins on 27/07/2011</em>

I haven't bought mine yet but when I attended private school I had 3 pairs of shirts and 2 pairs of skirts. My mom always said " one on the body, one in the wash and one on the ironing board" - but skirts can be used more than once.

Soo...I've started looking into school uniforms and noticed that Zak's sells backpacks, bookbags and scarves - but no shoes! Are the school backpacks mandatory? How about book bags? Can I get a regular backpack instead? How about shoes? What's allowed and what's not? ( I have a boy and a girl in year 3) Are scarves mandatory for year 3? Is there a specific day/occasion to use scarf or tie? Or is it a choice? TIA

No problem! Get a countertop dishwasher! They work great, and as long as it is near a faucet, a sink (or a drain to put the hose in) and an outlet, you can put it anywhere! I've had a couple myself ( not in Dubai) and they work the same as 'the big ones". Here's some - but you can google "countertop dishwasher" or " over the top dishwasher". I also read in another thread here in EW that Carrefour sells them from time to time. Good luck! http://www.shopping.com/prices-dishwasher-uae/products?sb=1

grrrrr men can be so #&$# sometimes... It will pass....I had that too and it is due to hormonal changes. Try to eat less soy, eat more honey, pumpkin seeds, avocado and stick to a whole grain diet for a while - but no gluten. Avoid coffee , chocolate and tea. Avoid non organic dairy and meats ( it contains hormone) - Eat more healthy fats such as virgin coconut oil and fish oil. HTH. <em>edited by MomOfTwins on 24/07/2011</em>

Hubby just got our 2 cats and it took 2 hours at the airport, but he did a 'dry run" ahead of time so he knew where to go. For the permit go here and follow instructions - after you fill out the form you will need to scan and email them the pets papers, they they will email you back a link to print the permit. To be honest it was the easiest part! The hardest was to get the cats' health certificate stamped by the health inspection agency here ( which has to be printed in LEGAL SIZE or they wont accept it!) $400 dhs per animal for the permit, you need to get an e-dirham card at a post office. Call the Dubai Kennels and Cattery for info. http://petimport.moew.gov.ae/defaulten.aspx Hope it helps!!!

Those of you with kids with allergy-related coughs, did your children almost seem to choke they coughed so hard? DD started with a cough about a month ago which lessened somewhat but she's been left with something that affects her at night only. It's like her lungs are completely empty and can't seem to pull in any air and it's terrifying for her (and us!). She would shoot out of bed in a panic unable to breathe. It's eased of a bit now but still happens once a night. She's been on different cough medicines, anti-allergy medicines and pills, had a blood test and a chest x-ray and is now on 2 inhalers a day which don't seem to have much effect. She's only been on them for 2 days so I don't know if their effect is supposed to be instant or takes a while. That sounds like Asthma! Go have it checked! My son has it and was detected at age 2. It's a horrible sensation, I'd have her seen asap.......

IF (and only if!) your child is older than 1 year old, try this ( works on adults, too) - DO NOT GIVE HONEY TO A CHILD YOUNGER THAN 1 YEAR OLD - even if it's pasteurized. Use a glass or ceramic pan - NO METAL OR PLASTIC Peel and slice thin one ripe pineapple ( to find a ripe pineapple at the grocery store, pull off one leaf from the top - if it comes out without resistance, it's ripe - if you can't find one, let it sit at home for 2-3 days and try the leaf-pulling again until that happens) - it won;t work if the pineapple is not ripe. Layer the slices with lots of honey drizzled over each layer - use the whole fruit Cover with film and refrigerate overnight - very important! The next day, strain the syrup formed at the bottom and give your child up to 4 teaspoons a day (for a younger child maybe 1-2 a day) Keep refrigerated up to 3 days - make a new batch after that - it won't go bad but it won't keep its properties. You can use the pineapple on desserts - try it diced over ice cream ;) This is a fantastic recipe, SAVE IT!

I grow up in a place where the weather was always hot (35 degrees average) and I have always drink cold water even after doing sports and never had a problem with that. Personally, I think is just the old wife tale, the only times where we were told to drink room temperature water was when we have a cold or bad throat. But this is from somebody living always in a hot weather place, I know is different story in cold countries like Russia and there like. Gaby where r u from, if you don't mind me asking?
