Hi Becky - welcome to GCMC. We've been here for 2 years now and love it - it's really beautiful and peaceful round here. Since my kids are older I'm not sure about mum and baby groups but I know there is a coffee morning thing - I've never been but I know they meet up on Wednesday. There also is a monthly bookclub. You should have a look at the community website - www.dmccommunity.com and there's also a page on Facebook called Dubai Motor City. Regarding cleaning services, most companies come here - which ones are good is a very difficult question lol:)) hth

Sorry to derail a bit, but @ monnie..were you given glucophage?...gosh the side effects are killing..how do you manage? Yes I was given glucophage and yes the side effects were horrible. It took me 2 months to go up to my full dosage and I found that the XR (slow release) are better than the normal ones. Those 2 months were **** however and each time I increased the dosage it would take me about a week to recover. Having said that I'm glad I stuck out with it because now there are no side effects at all and I can finally lose weight.

It definitely must be a cultural thing because for me sharing a house with my parents is a big no no, and with the in-laws - no way in ****!!!

I was exactly like you till I was tested for insulin resistance and was found positive. Before I started having medication to treat it I just couldn't lose weight no matter what I did. Have your doctor checked specfically for this? I'm now losing weight slowly but steadily doing Slimming World diet - it's not a crash diet, just a sensible one.

We bought ours 2 years ago from ID Design. It's extremely comfortable, good quality, great design, reasonable price and 2 years later it still looks as good as new even though we use it daily. Would definitely recommend.

hmmmm... it sounds like Rome could be the answer to me :-) sightseeing, shopping, beautiful weather, oper air cafes, restaurants.... and it's still nice and lively in the summer. i live in milan, and in summer it's as quiet as it can get... we all flee from here asap! i'm happy to help if you need further advice. ciao! Thanks for replying. Rome could do but both my friend and I have been there too (we love Italy lol). I was thinking along the lines of Capri, Amalfi Coast, Lago di Como, Lago di Garda, Italian Riviera, etc. What do you think of these locations? Do they have what we're looking for? Mille grazie :)

I can't help you with the name of a company but we did a very good job revamping them ourselves. Just some paint and a roller and we transformed our kitchen in Green Community. The only thing is that the paint must be oil based not water based.

I know exactly what you're going through because we went through the same things when we were looking to buy. We also wanted a bungalow and we found one twice and the deal fell through because owner changed his mind. We were third time lucky however and now we've been here for over a year and we're very happy that we stuck it out till we found what we wanted. Which Green Community are you looking at? We're at the Motor City one. If you're looking here, I can have a look out for any for sale signs for you. In the meantime have you checked on dubizzle?

Not sure what kind of fan it is at Shakespeares but this company have outdoor fans and misters http://cool-group.net/2012/ hth Thanks for the link but these seem too bulky. What we're looking for is just a big fan on a floor stand and which can be used outside.

I'm looking to buy a couple of outdoor fans similar to the ones they have at Shakespeare & Co at AR. Has anyone seen anything like that at the shops? Would love to extend the outdoor season, even if only for a few more weeks. TIA :)

Might be fun to drive past Google, Silicon Graphics, Hewlett Packard, Yahoo, Facebook corporate head offices, Xerox PARC, the labs involved in the Human Genome Project, they are all located in Palo Alto/ Mountain View/ Sunnyvale, 35 min south of San Francisco. . These are my son's dream future employers, so it would definitely be fun for him:)

There is a brilliant Apple store that my husband and kids loved hanging out in and you can book into free seminars on all sorts of things from ipad to iphone. (sounds very geeky, but the store is always busy and staff are so helpful!) [b'>DH and DS are total computer geeks and they would so love this!!![/b'> Yosemite was gorgeous but you may struggle to get accom for the summer. It books out months and months in advance. We had a house in Yosemite called clouds rest. [b'> I did find accomodation in some vacation rentals inside the park.[/b'> edited by TimTam on 30/03/2012 edited by TimTam on 30/03/2012 edited by Monnie on 30/03/2012

Hi Monnie, California is an amazing State. I am excited for your Family. Have you considered the freeway system and routes into your travels? Will you be flying from each of the destinations to the other...? edited by DlnAces21 on 30/03/2012 We'll be flying into SF, driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, and flying back here from LA.

I'm even more confused now - 2 weeks won't be enough for all there is to see and do!!! I never realised there's so much to do in San Francisco. Normally we don't really like city holidays but all the things you're suggesting sound really good. I know that San Diego is a nice place but what is there to do there? I'm now trying to decide whether we should skip San Diego or whether we should spend less time in LA. In LA we were planning on staying in Anaheim because all we want to do were the Disney parks and California Adventure.

When I lived in SF, I never tired of the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl at fisherman's wharf. I know it's really touristy - but still so delicious! Mmmmm.....sounds so good!!! We'll be staying at a hotel in Fisherman's Wharf:)

Thank you ladies for your replies. Yesterday I was working on an itinerary and it goes somthing like this: 2 night San Francisco, 2 nights Yosemite, 1 night Carmel, 2 nights San Diego, 5 nights LA From your suggestions below it seems that 2 nights in San Francisco won't be enough so I might have to add some more nights there and take them away from LA perhaps. Also, some of you suggested staying in Santa Barbara - would that be nicer to stay in than Carmel? AAgh - so many places to see and so much stuff to do and too little time!!!!!

I need some ideas from anyone from California, or anyone who's familiar with California. Will be going on holiday for 2 weeks this summer with 2 teenage kids. We'll be starting from San Francisco and finishing in LA. Besides the usual touristy stuff to do in SF and LA (we've already been to LA before and done the parks and studios), what can we do in between. Our aim from this holiday is to spend some quality and fun time together as a family, before our eldest flies the nest (sob, sob!!). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated:)

We're in Motor City. Regarding condition, they're quite good - they're not new obviously but I think they're quite good. We bought new ones as I wanted to change the look from a traditional wooden furniture one to a more modern (and easier to maintain) aluminium look.

Becky - you need to start registering her at schools asap. Before giving you suggestions for schools, which country is she coming from? I'm asking you this so that we can suggest schools which follow your step DDs current school system. While there are no performing arts schools in Dubai (at least not that I'm aware of), there are a number of extra curricular activities which she can do which involve dance and drama.

There is also another Green Community in Motor City, next to AR, so location would be much more central there. The downside is that the prices are much higher than at Green community West and East. Sorry isn't green community east the one near motor city? thought they were the same place, if not that was the one I meant too. Was also thinking, the drive from GCW to DSO would be pretty long everyday... I don't think so. We are in the Green Community Motor City and I have never heard of it being referred to as east. I do know there are 2 green communities out at interchange 6 - to my knowledge they are west and east.So confusing :)

I was looking for my thread and thought it got deleted - didn't think of looking in the schools board. Anyway, we have a meeting with the head on sunday. I've taken on board the advice given in the other thread so that I will know what to say and what to ask. To my knowledge, these boys have only been talked to - parents haven't been informed and no consequences of any kind have yet been given. Meanwhile I have also started checking about waiting lists for year 10 at other schools, even though DD is still adamant that she doesn't want to change schools.

I found that the only way teenagers don't get bored is if they have some friends with them. So either let them get a friend each, or get together with another family with kids of the same age. We like to do this and go to Spice Island :)

Thank you ladies for your support. I realise just how bad this verbal bullying is - I can see how her self-esteem is plummeting. And what is worrying me a lot is her anger - just today she was begging me to get her a punch bag because she needs to let her anger out. I really think that one way or another this has to stop - it has gone on way too long!!

Does the school have a counselor? They are normally good at helping with situations such as this. Not sure - never heard about one but I'm planning on asking in my meeting as I think she needs help now. She's asking me for advice but I really don't know what to say anymore. She tried the "ignore them - they'll get tired of it" route - that didn't work. She tried answering them back - that backfired badly. The thing is that if she has an issue with one, all of them end up ganging up on her.

Slaon - I don't want to appear judgemental but I really think that he should be doing his own research not you. I understand where you're coming from but I really believe that at this age if they're not interested enough to research about their future themselves, we would be doing more harm than good if we help them out.

I signed up about a week ago and the girl I talked to, Melissa, told me that Dubai Municipality delayed the opening. They are hoping to open end of Feb, beginning of March. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the delay is longer seeing as they are now waiting for DM approval. I am looking forward to the opening but at the same time I'm not too worried because as Clare said, I have paid for one year membership - whenever that may start.

Yes you can. You can set up as many folders as you want. I've got Fiction, Non Fiction, Free Books, Recipes, Read Books, etc. On my kindle you have to press the button with lots of lines on it (if you know what I mean) then go on "Create New Collection" If you read the Kindle help guide it will tell you how to do it on your kindle.

There are some weekly coffee mornings and we also have a monthly book club. For more information you should go on the dubai motor city forum (do a google search). Welcome to the neighbourhood:-)

Oh no!!! How do you know you were caught? Not sure if I jumped a red light or not a couple of weeks ago (it was sunny and after I went through I wasn't sure whether it had been red or green) and haven't received anything about a fine yet.
