Sharon at Salon Ink. I have seen her cut a girl with very long hair to a really trendy short style. The lady looked years younger after the haircut and fabulous! Ok, thanks, where is Salon Ink located? Any other recommendations? :)

hahaha, gotta do it! I had short hair a long long time ago and liked it, and I do love my long hair but between the humidity, water, and temperature here I just pull it back day in and day out- getting pretty annoyed with it all. It just feels yucky and unhealthy- I think it needs a fresh start, and I could use a fresh new look!

Lallie - they look at the date that your visa was issued and charge you from that date, not from the date of application. So like my residency was renewed in October (so automatically your ID expires). I'm going to renew now, but rather than pay for 2 years, they will charge me the full 3 years (actually I would pay 3 years anyways, but say my visa has expired in Feb of 2011). Moose - the charges will be 20dhs per day up to a maximum of 1000dhs. Now I'm not sure if the charges will be calculated from the 1st June, or will it be calculated from the date of your new residency, in which case by the 1st June you will pay the full 1000Dhs. As yours is a renewal, you can just get it done at a typing centre that does renewals, just take your passport and old ID card with you. They then send you the new card by courier. Much less painful than going to the actual ID registration centre. Arg, painful to pay 1000 but "whatever" is my thought on the whole thing at this point! Do you know which typing centres do renewals? And thanks for all the info!!

I'm a bit confused. I have mine, technically it says it expires this month I think, but I also switched to my husband's visa in September. So, obviously I have to go and am totally putting it off, but how much do you suppose I'll be charge?? So frustrating!

He was in our yard this morning, so looks like he's found his way back to his stomping grounds... and he had a little friend with him, another skinny white cat but with black patches on him. Guess he picked up a hitch-hiker on his way back home!

I'm surprised he's ventured so far though- he usually hangs out in our yard and closely around the neighbourhood. I'll check with the neighbours if they feel he's been missing as of lately and I'll let you know if you need to hold on to him the next time he comes around. He's such a scoundrel then, gettin' free food from everyone around!! :)

Is he mostly white with ginger patches, and really skinny, with a collar that has a little screw top capsule on it? If so he's one of our neighbours cats who just wanders around and loves coming in the house if you'll let him! He's not one for cuddling or being pet, but loves a good meal and nosing about! He's from Palmera, so might have found his way over to you. He is really skinny, and quite a clean cat.

I'm sure it's been asked a million times, so my apologies! My husband and I are heading out today for our first look at prams. He's been researching all morning but we're still a bit clueless! We'd like something that is simple and basic (I'm not one for a thousand bells and whistles), folds easily, rides smoothly, and has the seat that comes out to go into a base in the car (so a removable car seat type one)... I'm sure there's a few of you wonderful mom's with an opinion on what you've found to be **** and what's been awesome! Please share with two clueless first timers Thanks in advance! Posted already on the main page, have actually never been to visit the moms/tots forum but guess I should start

It should, my blackberry does, I just switch to my Canadian sim card when I get home. More and more companies are offering great packages on sim cards, since the actual use of sim cards is still fairly new in Canada, but it's becoming more available.

We go home for family time every year- it's a top priority and we love to go home. Being quite a 24 hour journey and a big expense each time, we did think how each year we go home and have no travel time or money left for any other new adventures. But going home is just too important to us so we have made compromises; often we extend layovers and take new routes each time. We've now seen Hong Kong, London, Amsterdam, Munich... all on an extended 24-48hr layovers... just a little trip but still a fun way to get to see the world here and there. And being from Canada it has been just as easy to travel around our own homeland to see new things and still visit family. I agree with the others, I would never see going home as a waste. My parents, in laws, and family just mean far too much to me to ever consider not going home. edited by moose on 18/04/2012

I've only been to see Dr. Oksuz, so can't compare, but I will say that I really like Dr. Oksuz, and find her very calm, patient, and she answers all my questions and makes me feel at ease. She also takes a lot of time with the ultrasounds and lets us enjoy watching baby move around and wave at us :) She is very professional and kind, and as this is our first, I've been very comfortable with her.

We are in palmera 2 and have never smelt it but on our night walks as we pass it it stinks quite a bit, we've always wondered if it must bother those that live in the area adjecent. Can't say for sure if it does, but just knowing the strong scent as you walk past and you are are also walking right next to some backyards I can imagine those closest can smell it. edited by moose on 08/04/2012

It doesn't always work out to be so simple as "get insurance, be covered for pregnancy". I had coverage from my insurance, separate from my husbands. Then I quit my job- my insurance stops. I go under my husbands insurance but pregnancy won't be covered for a year. I called and called around but many won't cover you for 9 month, 1 year, 6 months... whatever. So this whole "get insurance. end of" isn't always so easy!!

No, he's all white, maybe a tiny bit grey. He's funny as he just hangs around the same general area all the time. But today I waited as he crossed the road in front of me... Not sure why the duck crossed the road!? Probably to meet the chicken. ;) He's obviously someones pet.

Thanks Cobette - for the reminder! Good idea - I know it, but in an emergency would I remember it?? It's not rocket science. It's 999. In North America it's 911. So when I moved here I didn't know it was 999 for quite awhile. I always thought 911 was world-wide, how would I have known otherwise. So not really all that strange to not know... Oh goodness me moose. With genuine apologies, I'm having a little giggle here at your expense. ;) North Americans do tend to think that their way is the only way. You can get whatsapp on the 49uae plan, as mentioned. I have it on my blackberry. The thing with whatsapp is its connection and dependability is cr*p. I use it to chat with my iphone friends but if you see a little clock once you push send it means it won't send for awhile or the service is down... sometimes it sends a day later. (on my blackberry I can see a clock, although one of my friends with an iphone doesn't see these icons I believe. A green check means it went through, a double green check means it was received and read. It's actually quite handy!) My friends and I just then switch over to text if it's important and the messages aren't going through. I use it when i have wifi or no wifi, but like I mentioned, it's connection is intermittent. Even my iphone friends notice the same from their whatsapp. I don't know if this has to do with Etisalat/Du or what... ETA, I also use it to chat with my sister in Canada, no extra charges that I've noticed, plus we send pictures back and forth. She even sent me a video the other day via whatsapp and it came through perfectly. edited by moose on 05/02/2012

Know an Oz lady married to local whose children, hardly say may I ,can I ,excuse me...I am probably wrong but she says that the translation is hard for them as Arabic is their 1st language and apparently the way they structure their sentences it is not in it...If that makes sense! Anyway I still tell them say this or I won't let you. I still correct my older son whe he says me and my friend...NO its my friend and I. Always say yourself last. His present girlfriend doesn't lift her elbow off the table when eating but brings her mouth down to the fork...I shudder everytme we eat together edited by basil on 24/01/2012 Careful on correcting "John and I..." or "me and John..." (or "John and me..." whichever way you prefer), it's often over corrected and children way too often say "John and I..." when it's actually incorrect. Not that we need to get into another grammar thread, just thought I'd mention it. :) [url='>http://oxforddictionaries.com/words/i-or-me[/url'>

Although I can't help you on the details, my husband and I traveled to Hanoi, sa pa, hoi an, and around. We didn't spend too much time in ho chi Minh city but I will say we were amazed at the amount of travelers with young families and how family friendly Vietnam was. Almost every where that is " touristy" will be simple with children. We found that hotels and the service industry were great towards families and children. You should have a good time. Hope someone helps you out with some details for accommodations (stick with 5 star, prices are very doable and 5 star hotels will accommodate you better with some children, probably have a pool, larger rooms, etc,). Enjoy! Oh, by the way, of all the places we went we love Hoi An the best and it was very child friendly, everything within walking distance really and lots to see! And Hanoi has a lot to see and do all within the Old Quater district which would be where you would stay and can get around easily by foot or short taxi rides. edited by moose on 20/01/2012

I do have a fun question and I would love to hear what you all (y'all) think! Regardless of if you chose the American or UK curriculum for your child here there is the IB option that has gotten more and more popular. Do you think that in the written form as it pertains to IB, English should be marked wrong if it is spelled A) British or B) American? Remember, this is an INTERNATIONAL program. :) Just curious how YOU would feel if your child got marked off on spelling with the IB? FYI: There are teachers here in Dubai that do mark off!! I think as long as the spelling is CONSISTENT then either way should be fine. Ladies? edited by americanfamily3 on 18/01/2012 That's an interesting question Americanfamily, I would hope a teacher would be sensitive to the fact that it's an international program with international students and keep that in mind when teaching language. For example, if it's 'colour' or 'color' I would hope the teacher would recognize (or recognise!!) the spelling associated with a different country, either that or he/she should ensure to clearly inform students which spelling is acceptable prior to a test, if possible. When I was a preschool teacher here I taught my children many 'different' pronunciations. For example, when learning the alphabet I would sayd "zed" but then told the class, "some people say zee and that's ok too, we sometimes say things differently in other countries." We went through this often; tomato tomAto!! Funnily enough, three year olds get that, and accept it and the differences we all have so much easier than we, as adults, do!! (sorry if there are any mistakes, I despise typing on the iPad!) :)

Wow amazing photos! I think Muesli Baar is right that the pic of Burj Khalifa comes from one of the towers near the Business Bay Metro station, but it could likewise be taken further away from that due to the fact that the millenium Tower and Executive towers look so far away. I would love to have more info on the pic taken from the Church in Leicestershire...it completely confused me, but the effect was fantastic! Can anybody explain in simple terms what that pic shows exactly???! The church photo: It's the stars you're seeing as the earth rotates throughout the night. Basically the shutter on the camera is left open for 11 hours, or for long periods of time, to capture movement. I'm pretty sure that's how it was taken, although I'm an amateur at that type of photography... edited by moose on 10/01/2012

This would be a great idea to put towards Lime Tree. We always take our guests there and they always love it, so a recipe book would make a great gift for them. Also a great gift idea for expats who move away... love their chutneys and all their dishes and desserts. I'd definitely buy a recipe book, or two!!

I have bad RLS at times, but haven't in quite awhile and put it down to an increase in bananas in my diet. The potassium seems to help. My mom and sisters get it quite severely as well and each one of us deals with it differently and seem to cope yet none of us medicate. Never tried magnesium but will definitely keep it in mind! My husband still teases me about it and thinks the syndrome sounds made up! Too bad they couldn't come up with a more clinical sounding name!! I think that, unless you've experienced it, you can't understand how crummy it feels :P

I have just come home to find another 5 advertisements in my car port. If you find this as irritating as I do please write to Emaar and complain, it will take more than my one little complaint to get the ball rolling. I also just found the same company left a flyer on my car, door, on the post, and in the trees! Immediately I called this company and the man was extremely apologetic and concerned about how many of his flyers were being wasted. Funny how when something starts to bug you you suddenly feel like going on a rampage about it! PLEASE write a complaint or suggestion to Emaar, found at this address:[url=http://www.emaar.ae/index.aspx?page=contact'>link[/url'> under We Care My suggestion/complaint was as follows: **************** I come home to anywhere between 5 -10 flyers hung on my doorway. 1) These flyers are being hung in the carports, this is private property and the delivery men should not be entering our carport. If they are selling something or delivering something they should be going to the front doors. 2) This is so WASTEFUL! I immediately put all flyers in the recycling bin outside my door. A lot of them are even sealed in a plastic bag! We don't even have severe weather to justify protecting an advertisement. I receive numerous flyers over and over again, I do not require 10 menus for the same pizza place! 3) These companies should be told that they are NOT to deliver to villas that have a [b'>NO FLYERS/ADVERTISMENT[/b'> sign on their doorway. If they do they will be banned from advertising in the Arabian Ranches. 4) Residents of the Arabian Ranches should be informed that they are able to post a NO FLYERS NO PAMPHLETS sign on their doors should the wish to not receive these. Right now Emaar is posting signs regarding a GREENER COMMUNITY. Currently I do not find that allowing all of these advertisements into the Ranches as promoting a green environment. I would appreciate some action and a solution on this. ***************** Thanks! edited by moose on 10/10/2011
