Notheragain: Thank you so much for your trouble. He is looking for a Mechanical & Electrical (MEP) position, has experience in the building construction industry and wants to switch his expertise to Oil and Gas. Will consider anywhere but is used to being outside of the UK (left the UK 10 years ago). Your help is much appreciated.

My DH is being considered for a post in HK. Not lived there before so asking for your advice as to what to look out for etc. Also, how much tax would a British expat pay? Good and bad areas? Your views would be much appreciated.

Thank you all. Have asked her to print everything out and keep. Her brother is unreasonable and controlling. She has tried to sort things out and explain what he needs to know, but he is accusing her of things she has not done and is not accepting of her friendly chats or explanations. She has ignored his recent emails and this makes him more angry. It has gone past the stage where she can invite a conversation to explain what he needs to know. She is just so scared.

Thanks for coming back Dentro. Yes, very sad indeed and her brother sounds like a dog with a bone regarding the issue they are fighting over. The sister is not bothered, meek and mild and prepared to talk it through and sort it out. Her brother is asking her questions like she is 5 years old and she is annoyed to be treated like this. If he arrives in SL and starts to be abusive, she has no choice but to call the police, even though she would feel bad but she needs to have some protection.

A friend of mine who lives in Sri Lanka has a brother who lives in Oz. There seems to be some kind of family dispute going on where her brother keeps sending her abusive emails, uses bad language and is bullying her to tell her side of the story. My friend is very scared and wants to know whether he could be stopped from turning up on her door step. Could legal action be taken where his emails could be forwarded on to the Oz police? Could immigration stop him from entering Sri Lanka? Any advice on how I can help her?

Yes but he has been given accompanied status when he is married. They even asked for his marriage certificate as part of the HR process. Shouldnt he be given family status because he has a wife and child? Really confusing! Anyone out there with some experience with this?

Thank you to all for your advice and guidance. Contract is unlimited so dont know. He works in the oil and gas industry. My gut feeling would be to advise Perth and completely agree with your comments about the other countries, although I hear Malaysia is better than places like Nigeria etc. Are there any Ozzie ladies on here who can advise on the price of rental and sale properties? What about schooling, medical etc. There's lots to learn from each other on EW, a great forum.

Ladies, will be flying in to Dubai on the 24 December to celebrate Christmas. I am tempted to bring with me mince pies/cakes/biscuits/cheese as there wont be time to go food shopping. Would I be able to bring these items into Dubai without getting into trouble? Obviously, I want to stick to the rules as life is easier this way. Has anyone experience of bringing food items like this into Dubai?

This company have multiple vacancies. They have offered him the position of Front Desk Clerk and no not management (even though he was a hotel manager in previous job). They say they usually interview people when they come into Canada and the Immigration authorities also interview the candidate. The company dont provide medical and health insurance. Their website is under repair apparently. Also the emails they send is from someone called Jennifer and there is no surname or company name, address nothing as a signature on email. This is strange. What can EW members advise.

He has been offered the job, and is given 5 days to respond to visa requirements etc. The company are paying for his flight ticket. Trouble is, he is worried that they have not interviewed him only seen his resume with photo. On the strength of a CV, can an employer offer you a job? All correspondence has come through email. He is desperate to work but is anxious that it maybe a hoax. Please can anyone help. The company is travellers inn express hotel.

Sounds interesting and good luck to your husband in trying to find a job. Not quite with you regarding directing work back to UAE or Oz. Do you mean that they are looking for candidates from the UAE or Oz? We would like a job in Oz if possible but have to see what turns up I suppose.

Thanks for your response. Does your dh work in Dubai? We were looking at the Chevron/BP/Shell sites and will take your advice and have a look. As you know, word of mouth especially amongst expats is also a good networking tool. If there any openings in your dh's company, could you kindly let me know. My thanks again.

My grandson was born in Dubai and has an English and Arabic birth certificate. We used the English one to get his British passport. A friend tells us that we should get his birth registered with the British consultate in the UK for the purpose of keeping ties for the future. I spoke to the British consultate in London who told me there is no legal requirement for this and does not replace an original birth certificate but its just a preference if you wanted this in British style. Has anyone else gone through this route and if so, what is the real benefit as I cant see one.

Noted comments regarding landlords insurance. Is it essential to take out Landlords Legal protection insurance to cover rent arrears etc. I have a property in the UK and the quote is £130 for building and contents but extra £150 for Landlords Legal Protection insurance which makes it quite expensive. Please can someone advise me?
