Birchy: The letter says they are terminating his employment for technical reasons - I spoke with the MOL today and they told me an employer can write what they like when terminating employment (hos bizarre). They told me that he is entitled to cost of air ticket, pending salary, pending annual leave payment, 30 days notice (gross salary) and 7 days per year gratuity. Does this sound right?

Thank you all. He is on an unlimited contract and the job he's working on has come to an end. Some employees have left or issued with redundancy letters (or do they call it termination of employment) and some have been posted overseas. LMAO-DXB - thank you will get back to you shortly. Think the letter said he can leave on the 23rd Feb but nothing about 'dues' mentioned. They are clearly making him redundant so should he not be entitled to the severance pay?

So its good to make a UAE Will if you are an expat? or can you do one in the UK and will that suffice in both countries? I have also been told by a lawyer in the UAE about making a will in the UAE which will include guardianship of any children etc. What is the best way forward here?

My friend was put down as a reference when her friend opened a bank account in Dubai. Her friend has suddenly left Dubai and she has no way of tracing her. She thinks something must have happened where her husband lost his job and they had to leave in a hurry. The bank keeps phoning my friend asking for their whereabouts and she tells them each time she doesnt know. What else does she need to do about this.

Cornish Pixie, forgive my ignorance here, but have no idea how much these are to buy new. Therefore, I dont know what is a fair offer. Why dont you make a suggestion given that these are for a beginner who may lose interest!

If you are looking to delay anything in the UAE, always use the excuse that you are travelling and will come back to them shortly. I have heard that so many times and I dont think its been true but Ive had to accept it. And traveling could mean going away for a long weekend to one of the Emirates.

Its all becoming clearer now from talking to you all. Thank you. Its just that she is stressed out about doing the right thing and not breaking any laws in the UAE. So everyone thinks that the tenant should pay for the water damage? I will tell her this so she can stop worrying.

Does anybody know how much sick leave you can have when you've been with a company for 16 months? My DH finds his company very demanding with lots of disagreeing and quarelling in meetings etc. People are working to deadlines and you can understand everyone is under pressure. They dont seem to work as a team and everyone has their own agenda and time lines. My DH tries hard and works long hours to achieve a high standard but is getting no where. He is constantly ill from mainly exhaustion and am asking him to visit the doc for a few days off. He has never done this! As far as the MOL are concerned how many sick days can he have?

Sugarbeach, yes very frustrating and DH looking for another job. Dont want to fight the system but to make an employer aware that they are being fraudulent. What would they say if my DH worked 7 hours a day and signed for 9?

This type of working culture may exist in other places, Im not disputing that. The point is all employees are made to sign a time sheet for 8 hours daily when they (staff at all levels) work much more. Then the odd memo also is sent about working on Fridays too. No mention of payment or anything. Also, no staff are allowed holidays, even to be arranged in advance, unless the company say so. Not the best way to keep staff at any salary!

Because I work in Dubai and we are settled here I would not like to move area. Plus, if he gets a better job in Dubai he will be out the door pretty fast! This company often issue a memo late on thursday asking all staff to come in on Friday. If they do not, there will be some action taken. Do you know what? My DH did not show up and nothing was done. How dare they dictate and control their staff to this extent. I dont like the work culture here and in the long run, it will takes it toll on anyone's health, so take note!

Yes he is in construction and accepts he will work long hours. But this is continuous and the time sheets they are made to sign is for 8 hours a day only. No one has questioned this. He phoned the MOL who told him that an employer has the right to ask for 10 hours. Ok, so he does 10 hours, then they want more, and then they demand that all staff are requested to work on the Friday too, with no mention of a day off in leiu or overtime payment. Thats pushing it isnt it?

Lady Bubbles: Good to hear you have managed to get paid for extra hours. I wonder if the MOL would support our case and ask the company to pay for all the extra hours he has worked. That would be interesting!

Thank you both. So a moisture monitor is the answer, will make sure she gets one.I am concerned as to the water from the wet washing evapourating into the air and maybe resting on the baby's chest. He now has a chest infection and a nebuliser has been recommended.
