Same happened my Dad, we got them from the pharmacy in Saudi German hospital, which is close to us, but I think you can get them from any hospital pharmacy without a prescription.

Well said Sandfly ! I didn't even want to get into the advice to not bother sending someone's 8 year old daughter with a life debilitating illness, to a specialist medical Dr. As an aside, I do see a Functional Practitioner for my own health issues, I have acupuncture and take herbal supplements but I do it as a complimentary adjunct to my medical physician and the pharmaceuticals that keep me ticking over. edited by mum2girls on 18/01/2015

BTW, Hashimotos is not THE cause of Celiac Disease. People with Hashimotos have a risk factor to develop Celiac. Most Celiacs do not have Thyroid issues, but some do. You have a one-track mind Choccabella and I'm not interested in an argument, however I don't believe your statements should be left sitting there unchallenged.

I have a different perspective. The beach and sea are polluted with tar and oil. I know the resort are trying to manage it, but I think they are fighting a losing battle. The food is average at best. Sense on Edge stunning location, not the Fine dining that is touted. Service is not the greatest. Furnishings are of the Fred Flintstone type. Lighting is dim, dim, dim. A/C noisy. Positives : The pools in the villas are beautiful, Beach villas are a must for the view, the main pool is beautiful, the Bay itself is beautiful, the scenary is different and dramatic and a pleasant change from Dubai. Driving distance from Dubai is a plus.

There is a lovely lady endocrinologist at American Hospital, Italian and worked in the UK for a long time, I am not sure if she is a paediatric Endo or not, however I have seen kids waiting to see her. Chocobella, when you say that autoimmune diseases begin because of a leaky gut, it really emphasises how little knowledge you have about autoimmune illnesses in general other than hypothyroidism, which is probably the least serious of all the autoimmune diseases out there. HypoT is not comparable with the likes of Multiple sclerosis, Myasthenia Gravis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, all of which are autoImmune and far more complex than being caused by a 'leaky gut'. edited by mum2girls on 18/01/2015 edited by mum2girls on 18/01/2015

My housemaid genuinely likes the cats, I hear her out calling for them if they have not been around for a few hours and she often lets them sleep with her. Plus we go away for most of the summer and she is always left with them and we have never seen this behaviour. I wonder did she secretly leave them in the house for a day or two if she went off to stay with friends unknown to us. We gave up on the wet food as the male cat just meowed all day long in front of the cupboard for more, didn't matter how much wet food we gave him, he was still meowing loudly for more, so we stopped it, but that was more than a year ago. Also I really don't like the smell of the wet food, yuck. Thanks for the insights. hope the cats will settle down soon, it driving me crazy.

Yes, they are neutered, we live in a large villa with a big garden. They have the run of both the house and the garden, so it's not lack of space. One of them never seems to know what he wants, he goes out, comes in, goes out again and is constantly meowing. They always got along, this is recent since we came back after the Christmas and New Year break, housemaid was here looking after them. Asked her if something happened and she said no, they were fine. The female one also bit my DD when she picked her up for a cuddle, never happened before or since. Checked her out for bruises, cuts etc and nothing. Wonder what happened !

Sorry to hear you have this worry. You need to see a Herpatologist, but I don't know of any in Dubai that I can recommend. There is this guy in Mediclinic, who has worked in the UK and specialises in Hepatology. http://www.mediclinic.ae/DoctorDetails.aspx?drid=3776

Thank you fairy dust for the reminder, glad you were caught early, I have a friend who was not so lucky and passed away within 12 months of his diagnosis. As an add on to the comment about pancreatic cancer, this seems to be the modus operandi of PC advocates to minimize every other cancer, it is a huge turnoff. I used to be a financial supporter of PC for many years, but have been so turned off by the aggressiveness of their campaigns that I do not support them financially anymore. A recent segment on a UK programme about a dad who lost his son to colon cancer at the age of 19, received a barrage of criticism from the PC brigade because it coincided with the first ever PC awareness day, comments such as 'disgusted, why are you talking about Colon cancer on PC day'. The insensitivity was unreal, they were disgusted that a grieving Dad was on TV on 'their' day. They really are doing no favors for the worthy cause that is Pancreatic Cancer .

VD, we have lived in a Meadows house for the past 5 years, it is rented. From my experience, I have to say I totally disagree with your construction friends perspective. The house we live in here is rock solid, while the facilities are constantly breaking down, the actual build of the house is far, far superior to anything we lived in in London. In the UK, we had rickety narrow and steep stairs, creaky wooden floors, if someone turned in their bed in the next room we could hear it (great when the kids were babies). When the heating came on in the morning it was like an airforce jet flying through the house, the water pressure was minimal. The gas boiler was always breaking down. We had a small fire from poorly/incorrectly installed electric wiring. We could only park one car in the garage / driveway. We lived in a nice area and paid a substantial rent. Just before we left, the house went on the market for a few million quid. There is really a lot of unfounded scaremongering here about the build of homes and in my unbiased eyes and experience, viewing UK property as superior is a bit skewed. If I was buying here I would make sure I bought a property built by a reputable company (Emaar) and had enough funds to upgrade the facilities and change the windows. Meadows, Springs, Lakes, would all be great houses with a bit of TLC and some money spent on them. edited by mum2girls on 14/12/2014

Our housemaid renewed her passport last month and she has told me this week that I 'forgot' to pay her the cost. It never crossed my mind to pay her the cost of the renewal, I paid her taxi there and back and the paid for the full day that she was gone to renew it. I will pay it if it is my responsibility, but I have given her lots of extras recently and will be really annoyed if she is trying it on.

Thanks Izzy, I was on that page already, but this is why I am confused. One paragraph says this ......... For tickets issued on or after 15th November 2014 Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage, and must be sent as cargo or freight. There are no exceptions to this rule. Then a few paragraphs below it says this ....... For tickets issued on or after 15th November 2014 Total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150cm (59 inches). Customers with individual items exceeding above dimensions up to 300cm (118 inches) will be charged an additional fee. Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage, and must be sent as cargo or freight.

The weight limit is still 30kg for economy, but how does the dimension size work ? It says size should be no more than 300cm, so how does one measure that ? is it the width + height+ depth of each suitcase all added together? Can you have more than two bags per person. Appreciate any simple clarification, thanks.

I think he had something to do with it. He married her as a smokescreen for his homosexuality, and probably because of family pressure Being a devastated widower, he would have removed the stress of having to live a family life, leaving him free to continue with the gay life his family would never accept. I feel for that girl, she must have been so confused when he was so cold towards her, very sad indeed. It is tragic that she was encouraged into an arranged marriage with someone that had a very perverted secret life (I am not talking about being gay, but all the other stuff he was into !)

It's unprecedented the amount of information and video footage being released by the authorities about this. I knew it would only be a matter of a few days before they caught the perpetrator, thankfully the authorities will do everything to ensure the safety of it's residents. What is worrying is the image of the walkie talkies at the end of the footage, someone else must have been involved, she wasn't a lone wolf after all. edited by mum2girls on 05/12/2014

Have some friends in your situation, some of them have opted to hire a 2nd nanny as they needed the flexibility on a regular basis, if it was once in a blue moon than your nanny could handle it, however 2x per week is quite regular. Another family hires an agency maid for the mornings, so their live in works a 'Late shift' but their kids are not babies. It's a tough one, especially that you need her available all day as well while you and your DH are at work.

Would you consider trying a Naturopathic Doctor? Dr. Lanelle at the Chiron Clinic is good, Dr. Heather at Mediclinic in Dubai Mall is great but probably a 12 week waiting list to see her. Good luck, you seem to be doing all the right things so it must be so disheartening to not be seeing any results.

Have you had a medical work up? While it may be your diet and metabolism, there are several disorders that have an effect on your metabolism and weight, that could be exacerbating it. One side of my family, 4 sisters all struggling with their weight for years, discovered that they were all hypothyroid. It is extremely difficult to lose weight if you are hypothyroid.

Dr. Tania at Nicholas & Asp is reputedly the best Orthodontist in Dubai. Despite being warned about her poor manner (by another dentist) I still went ahead and took my daughter to her, because she does have a good reputation medically amongst her peers. My DD has refused to go back to her. Dr. Tania does not have a good 'bedside' manner, she is abrupt and not friendly at all. She comes across as quite impatient. Despite her poor bedside manner she is very much in demand, so lots of patients can overlook her gruff manner. Personally, I would have stayed with her if my DD had been agreeable. I have an appointment with another orthodontist next week, so I will see how that goes.

I agree with Madge1. Plus English is not her mother tongue and she struggled to find some words during the consult, not a great 'bedside' manner. We always went to Dr. Khan at cooper health and he is a great Dr., really sweet, and I would recommend him without hesitation, but my daughter go to a point where she wanted a female Dr., I'm still looking!

Give her a 'work' phone, put 20 or so dirhams credit per month and that phone is for emergencies and for being in touch with you. Her own phone stays in her room until he he is off duty. Your baby is still young, in another few month he will be into everything and will require someone who is totally engaged and focused.. As others have said, start as you mean to go on, don't leave room for misinterpretation. A friend's little boy had a terrible accident when he was in his stroller at the park with the nanny , another toddler pushed the stroller down a flight of steps while the two nannies were distracted (posting on Facebook). The baby had terrible in juries, luckily all of which he has recovered from.

Maybe it's different for teenagers, but we have looked into it for our house maid, whose kids are coming in April( not teenagers though) and we were unable to invite them. They need to have an invite to apply for a visit visa, and only a relative who earns more than AED3,500 per month can invite them. In our housemaid's case, her aunt is going to provide the invite.

Cherpie has been posting here a while now and I am sure she is trying to keep the information she is divulging to a minimum, maybe even throwing in a few red herrings in case someone can recognise her, maybe that is why some things are not adding up. Either way, nn some GCC countries you are 'offered' the passport, therefore depending on influence etc., it would not be unheard of to get a passport if someone was not born there and not entitled to citizenship. A person can be born anywhere, but may still be eligible for citizenship. Neither of my kids were born in my country or my husbands country and they have citizenship of both countries. Lots of people hold dual nationalities even though their citizenship rules don't allow it. edited by mum2girls on 15/10/2014
