Eyewatering ..... the wine can triple the bill. I can't remember exactly the cost, but I do know it was THE most expensive restaurant bill we have ever had for 2 of us. We like our food and wine, so we always seek out the top restaurants anywhere we visit, we have eaten in a lot of Michelin 3 star restaurants in some of the most expensive cities in the world, so it being THE most expensive meal is good indicator of the prices. It's not a place if you are watching your budget, that's for sure.

I have tried to open the subject several times with my10yo and she doesn't want to know, or at least she doesn't want to hear it from me ! she says it's embarrassing ...... so I am guessing she has already been filled in by her peers. BTW, can anyone tell me if kids get any kind of s e x education at school here in Dubai, and at what age ? MrsB that is so so cute !

That's difficult to manage, but not impossible. Do you have plans in place if your little one is ill and cannot attend nursery ? could those plans be put into place in the am on the days your DH is travelling ? How late would you be for work on the days you need to do the drop off ? I think you should talk to the school, I am sure they can be flexible to accommodate a working Mom. You may be worrying for nothing and there may be no issue at all arriving a bit later on the days your DH is travelling ! Good Luck

Have to concur with Virtue, the Gems school our kids attend here in Dubai, has been one of the best schools our kids have gone to. Really cannot fault it, we are more than happy with the school. It doesn't bother me that the school makes a profit, they run it extremely well and are in the business of education, it is top notch. However, I don't think you can compare the likes of Gems with other smaller independent for profit schools, the scale is very different and the quality of education and facilities can be at the opposite end of the spectrum.

This is such an interesting topic. I find the some of my British and Irish friends who have not been here, think it's another Spain, Costa Del Sol type place(Beach, sun, boozing, partying), while my North American friends/ family believe it to be as conservative as Saudi Arabia.

My DH would love to take his vacation and travel home with us for most of the summer, but he can't ! Teachers are obliged to take 2 months vacation in the summer, others are obliged to work Christmas and other holidays, that's just how it is when you are an employee ...... Christmas isn't even a holiday here, when my DH worked in Russia he couldn't take holidays at Christmas because it was a normal work week, we had to suck it up and take holidays when it was appropriate for his employers. It seems some people view it as almost exploitation of the employee, but it's not, ask anyone in a service, medical or airline industry.

That's a tough one, we have lived in several countries as expats and I can say UAE surpasses all of them on so many levels. I don't know of any other 'developed' country where you can earn a tax free salary. A few of my friends who have lived in both Singapore and Dubai, would say that Singapore has the edge on Dubai, but I have no first hand experience for comparison.

Tara.K, as you already told her she cannot stay at your house, she probably thinks that you are okay with her staying here for the summer. You should tell her soon, that you are sorry but you just realised it is illegal for her to stay anywhere else in the UAE, other than at the home of her sponsor, so she has no option but to take her 1 month leave and your very generous offer of an additional 1 month paid leave, while you are away for the summer. You are totally in the right, absolutely not doing anything wrong at all, so don't doubt yourself. You would think she would be over the moon at a 2 month paid vacation after only 8 months of employment !

Tara.k, I know quite a few people who don't want their maids in the house while they are gone for the summer, especially the men of the house who are around for most of the summer. Particularly when their living arrangements are within the house itself, so don't feel bad about your stance on that especially that you have only known her for 6 months. A lot of helpers decide to not take vacation during the summer months for a number of reasons as DR says, she may not have enough money saved for when she goes home, kids are still in school etc. Others do it because they basically have the summer 'off' here and there is a lot of demand for seasonal work during the summer, so they can find extra work very easily, then they still have their 1 month vacation, so basically they work only 9 months of the year. I would say if it's not suitable for you this year, you are justified in telling her that she has to take her vacation when you do. Maybe next year, when you know her that much longer, you may feel differently about leaving her in your house during the summer ! Good Luck

I loved Dubai from the minute I got off the plane ! kids settled in really quickly and all of us loved the place immediately. It's a small city so much less daunting that a lot of other major cities, but has all the benefits (other than culture) of a large multi-cultural city. It took me a while to find my way around, but I enjoyed that and the driving did not bother me at all. We find Dubai is the easiest location we have lived in. Will say that customer service in a lot of places can drive one nuts, and any kind of maintenance, garden work can be extremely frustrating with trial and error until you find the right company.

I lost my mom when I was young, she left behind 4 very young and very sad kids! It was a huge gap in our lives, nothing ever felt right again after she died, our dad raised us on his own. No one rebelled, although I found out years later, that my youngest brother had dabbled in drugs when he was a teen, he was 7 when she died and he has barely any recollection of her, which absolutely kills me because he was her baby and she adored him ! For a very long time none of us even mentioned her name., but I cried for her every night and internally every day. As adults all 4 of us are extremely close, we love and adore our Dad and have a great respect for how he singlehandedly brought us up, he never remarried, but ours was a sad home, christmas, birthdays, weddings, births, always poignant and her absence is something none of us have ever really come to terms with. We all miss her something terrible and feel so sad about all that she has missed out on, she would have loved how her family turned out and would have adored all her grandkids. A Mom really is the heart of the family. So sorry for your loss JB.

The thing about 23 Marina is that is is not directly on the Marina, it is on a very busy intersection and a block away from the Marina. The quality is top end and the higher apartments have beautiful views of the sea. If you want to be directly on the Marina, the better buildings are the Emaar original 6 apparently, they have easy access in and out without dealing with the traffic congestion of the Marina area. The building names are Al Yass, Anbar, Mesk, Murjan, Fairooz, Al Mass. The lobbies are like 5 star hotels and the few apartments which I have visited are stunning. Good Luck.

I moved from PC to MacBookPro about 3 years ago, have to say I found it a steep learning curve, very frustrating at the beginning, but I would not go back to a PC. Now I find I can't stand to use our PC desktop anymore, we are probably going to change our desktop to the Mac also. I also had too many PC laptops fizzle out within 2 years, my MacBook is still going strong after 3 years. Just so you know, there are some websites which don't support Mac, for e.g.. paying Salik online is not possible from a Mac (unless they have changed that now) you need to do it from a PC. I don't know of anyone who reverted to a PC after changing to the Mac. I think you will love it.

There is a great English girl working at MAC at Dubai Mall, she does make-up lessons and will also do make-up for a special event. I think her name might be Simone, but not sure, I will see if I can find her card. She did my make-up for a few events and it was fab, I can really recommend her. I do keep meaning to book a lesson, they have a private salon behind the cash desk for make-up and lessons if you don't want to do it in public. edited by mum2girls on 07/03/2013

We had our fence with safety gate (double and self locking) installed by Stuart, he is a great guy, very professional and it is a quality product with a 10 or 20 year guarantee. His number is 050 4568730. http://www.poolfence.eu.com/page1.aspx I looked at both the fence and the pool netting options. I felt the fence was a much safer bet and far more practical, I felt we would maybe use the pool less if we had to keep removing and replacing the net, and from seeing one at a friends house, it not as easy to do as the manufacturers say. However it is nicer aesthetically. But the mesh fence is not too bad at all and it almost becomes invisible. From a safety point, I felt the fence won hands down ! It would be so easy to be distracted and forget to replace the net or not replace it correctly. The possibility of rushing to do something and decide to replace the net later and forget. Also, if you needed to hop out of the pool to answer the phone, toilet break etc, it's easier to shoo the kids out of the pool and lock the gate and know they are safe and away from the water.

We tried Feline Friends, the Vet, all of our friends, DH's work colleagues, school, dubizzle, no one was interested. I really regret that we didn't terminate when we first realised she was pregnant. Yes, we left it on around the clock! The cica-care did not adhere as efficiently as the one the Plastic Surgeon put on, so we just replaced strips of it every couple of days when it looked like it was beginning to peel off. My DD was 4 also, the scar was very visible for a few months, so we continuously applied the contractubux daily, now 1 year later the scar is a thin white line.

Yes, we used it. DD had a massive scar on her face, the Plastic Surgeon put some silicone cover on it (not sure if it was the cica-care) which lasted about 10 - 14 days before we needed to replace it, then we used Cica-care for another 4 weeks, after that we used Contratubex (sp?) scar cream for another several weeks. The scar is barely noticeable now, thankfully.

It's such a very personal choice really. For me the crucial benefits of having a maid are answered by these questions. Do you have any family / close friend support here for emergencies (late night hospital visits!) or illness? Does your DH travel a lot leaving you with the kids alone? Do you have babysitters for Doctor appointments, evenings out? Can you call on someone to help with school drop offs, pick ups etc. if something happens or someone is ill. You can still give your kids household responsibilites. We have a fulltime maid, we also have a chore chart for the kids, (10yo and 5yo), so you can certainly make sure the kids do chores despite having a maid, I still do chore's despite having a maid. The native language loss is not as a result of you having a live-in maid, you and your DH will have to be vigilant about only speaking to them in your own tongue only, I am guessing your kids are socialising and schooling in English, so they will automatically begin using that amongst themselves at home. It is important that you maintain the language, even if they prefer English. It sounds like the relationship between you and the maid is already coming to an end and I totally understand that you can just get sick and tired of having someone else around the house. For sure you can do it all yourself, like you say, lots of people do it. You can certainly give it a try without having a live-in maid, it doesn't have to be forever if you decide it doesn't work out. Good luck with your decision.

You will find that most all of the multinational's have their EMEA HQ's here and certainly would have Comp&Benefits functions. C&B may be unusual in a local company (but I am not sure about that) however it is a staple function in any of the HR International Multinationals. Emirates Airlines would be another option for you to try. If you can target those before you arrive it would be a start. Although I doubt you would snap something up within 8 weeks of arriving. Alternatively, if you cannot find something immediately in a HR department, you could target the high end executive recruitment companies, they are always looking for highly experienced HR people to work on their accounts with multi-nationals. All the big recrutiment agencies are here. You won't need a car, taxis are plentiful and very inexpensive. Working visa for a single female won't be an issue for any organisation who want's to hire you You could look at serviced apartments, those you can rent on a monthly basis and without the huge down payments and administrative hassles required for normal apartments. No clue about the 30 day visa extension, but there are ways around it, I believe ! Good luck

He was arrested immediately and charged with pre-meditated murder, is that normal in S.Africa? it all seems very quick, the police must have a watertight case against him, maybe he admitted to it at the time. If that is not the case, it does seem all very gung-ho from the police. In the UK, he would have been brought in for questioning and then arrested if they decided there was a case against him. A statement would have been made that X was arrested and charged with the murder of X. There would have been no detailed statements from the police until the court case. Her family appear to be very dignified in all of this, she seemed to be a lovely girl.

Thanks Vdella ! I assumed it was the same concept as the likes of Berlitz, i.e. anyone who is fluent in the language can teach upon completion of a 3 or 4 month 'training' in how to teach the language. I think I will have to give it a try anyway, don't have any other option for the moment.

I suppose the other option is for the schools to add it to the work contract and co-ordinate payment through the school accounts. It absolutely makes sense that a qualified teacher employed by a school should be able to give private tutoring on their own time, obviously within certain guidelines. For sure, they should clamp down on unqualified person moonlighting as a tutor, i.e. the French hairdresser or Lebanese neighbour moonlighting as a french tutor, the base guitarist in a band moonlighting as a guitar teacher etc etc. Anyway, off to find an approved route for French tutoring for my kiddos.

I don't know really, in our case it is for a 2nd language support. Most of the people I know here who use tutors it is specifically for kids who are struggling or for support with their native language, a 2nd language, or a musical instrument. One of the schools my DD attended had a high percentage of Russians and Chinese and my lord, those kids were tutored to the extreme. It seemed that the brighter the kid was, the more tutoring they received (or maybe it was the reverse ! LOL) We have not found that to be the case here at all. edited by mum2girls on 16/02/2013

There must be something more to it, I agree ! Maybe the school management deciding they want a piece of the pie also. In our school, the homeroom teacher is not allowed tutor their own students, which I think is fair enough. I can see how it would be unethical for a teacher to tutor one of their own pupils. We have always had tutors help our kids with French, this is our 3rd country and 3rd school and our first choice is always a teacher who works at their school. I never saw it as a conflict of interest , unethical or strange. We always paid the teacher's cash, even in countries with income tax, here because everything is tax free, you would imagine it would not be an issue for the authorities. But maybe as TDB says it is the fact they are paid directly by the parents and not by the school, but I still don't understand what the real issue would be.

Excuse my ignorance, but I really don't understand why it would be illegal. I can understand clamping down on the tutors advertising their services on Dubizzle or the like, as anyone could claim to be a tutor of anything ! But in a school environment where teachers are well vetted and have the relevant qualifications for the curriculum, and where the kids and parents know the teachers, it just doesn't make sense. They are just doing a little bit more of what they already do each day. I wonder how that impacts the tutoring academy's, will they have to close up shop. Such a shame for those kids who really need the extra help.

Burnsie, that is exactly how we felt, even though it was a young paeditrician, his attitude was like how my parents would describe Doctors were in 1950's, arrogant and condescending. He was not interested in explaining anything to us or listening to us, he diagnosed something which we knew couldn't possibly be the case, and was really irritated when we challenged him. He wanted to prescribe steriods immediately, as it turned out DD was fine within 24 hours, nothing to do with his diagnosis or suggested treatment. I guess it's where they do their training, that is still how the medical profession is in some countries. It's such a shame they didn't hire in top notch professionals, as apparently it is the best equipped hospital in the UAE, which is absolutely useless if you have 3rd rate staff.

Simples, our situation is the same ........ Tickets home are on a "use it or lose it" basis, we don't get the option to take the value of the ticket. Same with vacation days, there is a deadline for when they must be taken and after that it is lose them, unless exceptional circumstance due to work commitments, they may be bought out or deadline extended, but at the employers discretion not the employees request !. Sounds like OP's maid already was compensated for ticket home and she had her 1 month vacation, the maid was trying it on to get it a second time.

The Meadows clinic is open until 9pm and they can do x-rays, sutures etc. That would be my first stop for a small emergency. I need to find out where Medcare and the American Hospital are as I have heard others suggest those too.
