A freind of mine did it, it's worked our perfectly. They are now two years in the UK and maid and family are very happy. Maid has found a nice circle of friends. Minimum wage is not applicable in UK for domestic workers,, when you are providing accommodation, food, transportation etc . It was pretty easy process, although she had worked for the family for 2 years previously. Try it, you have nothing to lose.

Did it and the food was great, fantastic quality and a great variety. it's not a great atmosphere though. Just cant't put my finger on what was missing. The buffet is not as extensive as the likes of Bubblicious in The Westin, but on the other hand there was none of the queues for food either. 2 for 1, I would say go for it !

Yes, I read that disclaimer too. But really, why are all those people who were named, some of them even having had their photo's printed in the newspapers not getting injunctions, issuing denials, demanding retractions etc. These are people with a lot of money and a HUGE amount of influence, if those emails were fake, they would be all over it in a nano-second. <em>edited by mum2girls on 21/03/2012</em>

I agree the hacking is a bit dubious. But there is absolutely no way the media would be naming those people who communicated with the Assads if there was any doubt about the authenticity of the emails. It's interesting that her father or none of the other people have denied any of the email exchanges. They are being published daily for more than a week now. I don't know, but I think the chances of them being genuine are much higher than them being fake. I have come full circle since I first saw her photo, when I only felt sympathy for her and her family to have found themselves in such a horrible situation, the more I read about them the more I realise they are also very much implicated.

oh no, poor you !! it's such a worry having a high risk pregnancy. Are you on full bed rest or modified bedrest ? I started out on modified bedrest at home, i.e. (could get up for shower and bathroom breaks) but then ended up on full bed rest for 2 months in hospital , with my last pregnancy, baby came 6 weeks early, she is absolutely perfect, but it was such a worrying time. I got absolutely hooked on Grey's Anatomy and watched all the series back to back for hours each day. Hopefully you have friends who can come and hang out with, that can fill a few hours each day. I spent hours browsing internet, played around with photoshop and built a few photo albums. Best wishes for the remainder of your pregnancy.

We flew into Milan. You will probably have to do a 2 center holiday if you want beach and wine routes. We travelled around Tuscany, Florence, Sienna, Montepulciano and travelled through the little villages in that area. It's beautiful, the colour of the hills is amazing and the food and wine are out of this world. Have had some of the best meals of my life in Italy. Must forewarn you though, the queues for any of the museums in Florence was horrendous. Also the lack of road signs as you are driving through the Tuscany countryside, can pose a little bit of a problem For the beach, we stayed in Forte del Marmi, didn't like it too much ! We then took a ferry to the Island of Elba (about 1hour) and that was beautiful, we stayed in a hotel on a stunning white sandy beach, however some beaches are stone and pebbles. Great food and wonderful scenery. Whatever you do, don't visit Italy in August, it's hellish with the crowds. June or September would be really nice time to go, as the real tourist influx has either not begun or is starting to wind down. have fun planning it and enjoy.

Hi, last time you posted I, and others, recommended Dr. Tahir for plastic surgery. Did you try him ? he works at a few of the hospitals here so he maybe could also give you a recommendation for a neurosurgeon. I saw a Dr. Kayed, at Dubai Open MRI, who is a neurologist, and who trained in the US, maybe he could help direct you to someone who specialises in neurosurgery. Sorry your baby needs such major surgery, what a terrible worrying time for you. Also, would it be possible for you to have a phone / remote consult with someone in a major paediatric hospital in the US, UK or elsewhere ?

Looks like many of you hit the nail on the head about Asma and her family. Those leaked emails in the Guardian from her father and their friends, back and forth to the Assad's, are quite shocking in that they show the complicity of these western expat Syrians. I honestly imagined she, and her immediate family, were poor victims just by having the association of being married to Assad, but it appears a different story. Apparently her father is still working and living in London, these emails must be a terrible PR blow to him.

I absolutely loved it, DH not so much. Lived there for 3 years. Housing is quite reasonable, like everywhere there are expensive areas. What area's are you thinking of living ? House or Apartment. Cost of living is not bad at all. Healthcare is fantastic. However income tax and social welfare costs are HUGE. so if you are on a local package at least 50% of your salary disappears. Great restaurants, lots of wonderful green and forest areas and loads to do with kids if you have them. In the summer, you are not far from some great beach towns (although it is the North Sea, so I never set foot in the water). Weather is generally **** all year around though, a few nice weeks in the summer and that's it. If you have any specific questions, just ask.

Jillp, maybe I did find it on a bad day, and it'st true the veggies and fruit I buy in Spinneys or Waitrose never seem to last. I might give it another shot as it is so close to the kids school it is really easy to pop in there after dropping the kids off.

Gosh, sounds like a real scam going on there ! I hope they don't get scared and pay up without being 100% sure they really do owe the money. As others have said, if they do owe the 3k, than they will hopefully be able to re-negotiate the late payment fees. Please let us know the outcome.

I went to the Union CoOp in Al Barsha having read about it here. Must say, I was disappointed, I just didn't like it. Although it is spacious and absolutely empty, which was a big plus. They had a huge range of vegetables mostly local veggies, but everything seemed to be quite bad quality, ended up not buying any veggies there. The meat didn't look great, but again a huge range, they had no fresh chickens. There was a lot of dairy produce I couldn't find. Will be sticking to Spinneys, Waitrose and Carrefour from now on.

Wanted to organise a birthday party with them, as their facebook advertisements look really nice. Emailed a person on their facebook page who responded that I should contact them directly via their website, which I have tried. They have no phone number on their site and only an online enquiry form, I have now sent two online equiries and 2 emails to the email addy on their facebook page, with no response in over a week. ... and I KNOW, I probably should not even still be considering them if they can't respond to an enquiry, but I did show my DD the photos on their website and she likes the idea of it. But just wanted to make sure they are not gone out of business and if not, has anyone had a good experience with them. Otherwise, would love other recommendations please. Thank you.

Gosh, that IS interesting. Personally, I would be inclined to expose their tactics and not let them get away with it. As others said, if it was a genuine mess-up, they would have offered to rectify the problem and maybe ask you to comment that the issue was sorted out to your satisfaction. I would also let Amazon know about the company's offer. It's pretty unfair to the buying public if their reviews are subject to / the result of unscrupulous suppliers bribing reviewers.

It sounds like the family won't find a safe haven in many places, China or Russia maybe ? I originally thought she and her family were unfortunate and innocent to be caught up in this horror, but the more I am reading about her and her own family now, the more I can see that might not be the case. i guess that saying ' You are the company you keep !' rings true in this case.

Actually I didn't realise she married him after he came to power, apparently a 'rushed wedding' six months after he came to power. I assumed they were married and living in London before his father passed away. She is a British national, apparently her father is a famous Cardiologist in a London hospital. I wonder would she be allowed entry into Britain if she did succeed in fleeing ? I mean, her parents are Britsh nationals, she is a British national and I assume her kids probably are too. She did a lot of humanitarian work before all this, so she can't be very supportive of what is going on, apparently she did sign her name to an email to the New York times sent from her office supporting her husband. Glenfiddich, too funny, He really is a sorry looking individual. Doesn't appear to be the sharpest tool in the box either, from the interviews I have seen of him.

I am also considering buying one, I can't make up my mind. Everytime I am convinced, I read the online product reviews and a lot of the reviews are not very positive at all. It's such a lot of money to end up making a mistake. Most of the reviews are very positive though and it does sound like exactly what I 'need'! I fear that it will be like a slow cooker, where no matter what you are cooking, it seems everything tastes almost the same.

Friends of ours moved there last September. Her kids have settled in well to International school and they have lots of activities and are loving it, she herself is relatively happy there, but not loving it yet. There is a fantastic expat community spirit there. They live on a secure compound on Katamaya Heights and feel safe. They have not experienced or seen any of the trouble, but they avoid areas that are known to be flash points. As you are familiar already with Cairo, it will be relatively easy for you to assess if life is more chaotic there now, than it was before. Most people I know say it is far more chaotic and dirty than it was before the uprising. It is a hardship post for a reason ! it always has been a hardship posting location, but the volatile nature of the political situation makes it even more difficult. I think if we were offered a posting in Cairo now, we would probably take it. But there is always the underlying concern that things could escalate quickly with the possibility of an emergency evacuation. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks so much ladies for all the good ideas. Have bought a few more of the accordion files and will get those organised, I do have all the important stuff scanned but I still keep the original hardcopy 'just in case'. I don't own a shredder, I think I will buy one, might motivate me to get rid of stuff more speedily. I am going to do health insurance claims monthly instead of leaving it pile up for months and then can't find half of the receipts. Tiki, love your train of thought, but I think that method is what got me into trouble in the first place and why I am where I am now. What about phones, ipods, nintendos, chargers, cameras etc ?

Had to call Allianz insurance this morning, the rep was so efficient, knowledgeable and her english was so clear. I asked where she was based and they are in Ireland, offering 24hour 7day a week service. It was a pleasure to deal with her. So many large organisations have moved their non-US call centers to the other side of the world usually with dreadful staff, Swiss Airlines are one prime example of that, I absolutely dread having to call them. In my experience, they haveone of the the worst untrained English speaking reps I have ever had the bad luck to deal with. Good start to the day hopefully !

Too funny, guess it's not only my maid then !! Told her that my husband's company also expect's him to travel on the least expensive airline. She also had the cheek to say, but because she is going in August instead of December, the flight must be less expensive already. I really am considering ending the contract, I just cannot bear how ungrateful and cheeky she is turning out to be. I need to calm down, I am spitting fire at the moment.

Really, I just don't believe this woman ! Sorry I just have to rant Hubby and I talked it over and agreed that she could go home in August, we will have an additional cost to cancel her ticket to Europe with us and it is an inconvenience in a lot of ways, but so be it !! I tell her we will re-arrange things so that she can now go home in August as requested and when I look at flights, Gulf Air via Bahrain is AED1700 less expensive than Emirates, 2 hours transit each way, so I tell her I am booking that ticket and she is complaining that changing is going to be too difficult for her and she has always flown home via Emirates. She now has the sulkiest face ever. This is absolutely getting out of hand with her, absolutely zero gratitude.

Reminds me of when I hired a face painter and princess fancy dress costumes party for my 6 yo birthday in another country. The party organiser turned up with a real make up kit and grown up clothes, thigh high boots, boa scarfs, wigs, hats etc. I almost called the party off, I was absolutely mortified. OMG if you saw the photo's, we will definitely look back on it and laugh one day, but I still cringe. Turned out the kids had an absolute BLAST, the kids loved every minute of it, wearing real make up, real wigs and real 'grown up' clothes, the entertainer did a Disco Diva type activities. Honestly, I could not look the Moms straight in the face when they came to pick up the kids who were all made up like show girls. My DD still says it was the best birthday party she ever had.

Sorry, I posted this on the wrong forum. We have already bought her ticket to travel with us for the summer, but I think we could change / cancel it for a fee. Tonti, I think the every 2 years is for a contract with a local family or company (but not 100% sure), for all others it is every 12 months. AlQ, you are right, I don't know why I am fussing, but I do know she has said she is homesick, so I feel bad for her and her daughter. I just need to toughen up pronto !

Thanks GF, but our contract with her is a return ticket an 1 month vacation every 12 months, and I am happy to do that. But because she went home last year midway through her contract, it means she would now have to wait 18 months for the end of this years 12 months contract. I understand that is a long time, but with her previous employers she only went home every 2 years, so this is still a better option.

I took my daughter (4yo) to Mr. Imran Tahir. He has a western educated background, he trained at the College of Surgeons in Ireland and worked in hospitals in Ireland, UK and Australia. He does re-constructive surgery as well as cosmetic surgery. He did his plastic surgery residency at a very well known childrens hospital in Ireland. So I felt reassured with him He is a very quiet and reserved man, but I am very happy with him and the follow up. I have searched everywhere for them and can't find any in Dubai! Someone answered my previous request that Tchibo had the larger size one, but I have been there twice now and they didn't have any (they also didn't have a clue what I was talking about !). I tried Daiso also and a few of those stalls selling Wall Decals, but no luck! Thinking of ordering them on Etsy.com now and having them sent via shop and ship, which would be the first time I have used either of those.

Had the big chat with her yesterday, SM, took your advice and I didn't entertain the homesickness excuse, but gosh some of the c*r*p that came out of her mouth, I really don't get the essence of her logic at all. One of them was, "but Ma'am you have patience with your children when they make a mistake, you need to do the same for me !!!" My kids are 4 and 8, you are a 32 year old, who has been doing this kind of work since you were 18. This morning I have a new woman on the block, she is totally re-motivated again. I remember reading here on this site that they often need a good kick in the A, every couple of months, so I am begining to think that might be true. <em>edited by mum2girls on 16/02/2012</em>

I just gave one of mine to Richies Laundry, (04 341 4484) I was about to throw it out and decided I had nothing to lose by having it cleaned. It is a beige rug and it was totally gross from the kids, and had big stains everywhere, it came back like new ! I just sent in a second one, so hoping that comes back in a similar condition. We did it temporarily for about 5 months, DH moved to his new job location and we decided to wait it out until end of school year, so for us it was not permanent. In our case we were only a 4 1/2 hour flight away, so the decision was that hubby would return every other weekend and the weekends when he had meetings in Europe he would spend those weekends at home also. We had a 6 month old and a 5 year old at the time. Really, our 5 year old suffered the most, she missed him so so much, cried every night, cried every morning. would ask questions such as 'does Daddy have a new family' another time she asked me 'is Daddy dead'. She suffered a lot of anxiety. We had done everything to prepare her for it, to reassure her it was only temporary, but it really rocked her to the core. I also feel my husband did not bond as well with the little one, during that time. I have to say, even though we knew it was a temporary thing, it added a lot of stress to our relationship during that period too. There was never a weekend when he was home, when we didn't seem to argue, it was tough. I think with older kids (teens) than it can work better, but from my experience I could not do it to the kids again. However in our case, we were also in a foreign country, with no family around. As you are going 'home' I am guessing you will have family and friends around, so if you and your kids are very close with grandparents etc, than I think that would make a positive difference, but ultimately I think it works best for families with older children who are becoming independent anyway. I am sure you have considered all the practical things, medical emergencies at either side, cost of keeping two homes, school and social events, leading separate social lives. Lots of families appear to be able to live apart successfully, but equally lots of families are destroyed as a result. Good luck with it all, it can't have been an easy deicsion.

Yep Glenfiddich, I agree with you. I did tell her we would not mind if she decided to go home and would be okay if she even wanted to go home now, (even though we just renewed her visa in December) that was when the hysterical sobbing set in, 'If I was rich Ma'am, I would go home, but we need the money so I can't". She said she has to do this for at least another 5 years. Anyway I will have a talk with her tomorrow, as bad as I feel about her situation, the fact is I didn't kidnap her from her home country and force her to leave her daughter, it is a choice she made, even if she believes she didn't have a choice. So while I can sympathise with her, I can't tolerate the change in her work and attitude. Ugh, I hate all this stuff.

At that age they really do need 11 + hours sleep. Must admit I really don't like early starts so if my kids had to be up later in the mornings I would happily put them to bed later, as I prefer the lie-in in the am. My 4yo is in bed latest 7.15pm for a 6.30am wake up. The 8yo is in bed between 7.30pm and 7.45pm latest also for a 6.30am wake up. I am surprised that others think your bedtime is early, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm seems to be the norm in most of my friends houses.

Did they offer to help you out while your child was ill ? They sound like very ungrateful people. Gosh, when my kids were babies, being served a home cooked meal which I had not prepared and which I did not have to clean up after, was like a two week holiday in itself. You should not feel bad that you didn't want to babysit for them, they should feel horrible for even asking ! If they wanted to go out for dinner, do what other people on vacation do, take the kids along ! If they were on holiday in Dubai and not staying at your home, and don't want to hire a babysitter, than that's what they would have to do, otherwise stay in your hotel room and order room service. Hope your little one feels better soon, I am sure you don't need the added stress of spoilt adults throwing a stop because they didn't get what they wanted.

I 2nd Those Pool Guys, we changed to them after a disaster with the previous company which meant we had to empty and fill our pool twice in a matter of a few weeks. Those Pool Guys are professional, always turn up on the day they say they will, and once when I was not happy with the colour of the water, they sent out a team the same day to rectify it.

Minimum wages have been set by the embassies of the workers, not the DNRD or UAE government. You are definitely not breaking any UAE law by paying less than the embassy recommended minimum salary.
