I bet you can only share positive experiences on that website. You need to be extremely careful here about writing reviews, even if you have tangible evidence to prove a negative experience, it could still land you in a criminal court.

There is a lady here in Dubai who makes beautiful bunting and other unique fabric items, (personalised if needed) she has made lots for me to give as baby gifts. She uses the type of fabric you are looking for, has lots of choice and the quality is top notch. 1 string of bunting cost me AED150 last time I bought it. Her name is Carla Bygrave and her company is called Bright & Beautiful Here is a link to her Facebook page, she has lots of photos there. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bright-Beautiful-ME-creative-fabric-ideas/231202810239601 <em>edited by mum2girls on 29/05/2014</em>

Noor Takaful for local insurance, but it only covers Dubai. I also got quotes for around US$800 for insurance that would cover our maid back in the philippines also.

The California gun laws can't be that strict if this 22year old, with a lifelong history of mental health issues, was allowed to legally hold 3 guns, I mean, how does that happen? The kid was seeing 2 different therapists almost on a daily basis, his parents had called the police because they were worried about his state of mind, and no one took away his guns !

I find shopping stressful by default. Changing rooms make me claustrofobic lol. And the hassle of trying stuff on..... Don't - just take home and hope.... If it doesn't fit return it - too much hassle to try on in stores. Not recommended here with the miserable and customer unfriendly returns policies in most stores. I agree, MOE is a nightmare to get into, get out of and to find parking.

My husbands parents would have to go off for up to 3months at at time on a mission. He and his sister would be in the care of their maternal grandparents and aunts. My husband remembers missing them terribly, but has had not long lasting effect from it, and is actually very proud of what his parents achieved. His sister on the other hand holds a huge grudge, 100% against her mum rather than her Dad, who was away more than the Mom. She has been in therapy for years and really has quite a few issues. Of course, for most of the immigrant workers from 3rd world countries, it is a normal way of life. <em>edited by mum2girls on 24/05/2014</em>

I know another leading cleaning company who do similar. They sign a contract for AED1500 but only receive AED1300, not as bad as your girl but it's still wrong. Unfortunately if your girl gets demanding and appears to rock the boat things can be made very difficult for her. Holding passports is illegal, but it is not one bit unusual.

Art House Dubai definitely as per ILC, they are the go-to for any framing of high end quality artwork. Would not consider anyone else.

Yes, a lot of housemaids request this. They take their 1 months holiday salary and the money in lieu of their flight, and then they work the months holiday thereby earning an extra months salary.

Exactly Madge, it does seem to be a bit of a hype. ETA. Actually I take that back, I just remembered that all my husbands colleagues who are here either single or without kids live in the Marina area, they would have budgets in the AED300k mark. They would not live in a villa. So I guess that's the type of tenant the Marina attracts. <em>edited by mum2girls on 21/05/2014</em>

That what has surprised me, you can't get any more prime than Dubai Marina at that end of town, and Emaar 6 are the prime properties in a prime location and yet there are lots of 2 and 3 bedrooms which are empty and for sale.

I have been looking to purchase an investment property and I am so surprised at the amount of property available, although with the pretty sizeable price tags, I should not be that surprised. Everything I have seen has been empty, ideally we would like to purchase a tenanted property. Most of them look like they have been sitting unoccupied for quite a while. Nearly all of the agents are saying that the prices are negotiable. e.g. a 3 bedroom in Marina Quays, on market for 4.1m was negotiable to 3.5m. There are heaps and heaps of unoccupied flats for sale in the Emaar Original 6 in the Marina. So maybe things are already slowing down. Plus the agents are really hyping up the potential rental income. AED325,000 for a small 3 bedroom in the Emaar 6, I just don't think that is feasible <em>edited by mum2girls on 21/05/2014</em>

Speed Bumps ? Crazy solution. A lot of the accidents on Umm Suqueim and Hessa street happen because cars are speeding between radars and then slamming on brakes as they pass the radars. The answer is a punitive fine system that is not only monetary.

If you can afford it, buy one with a service warranty from a garage. Service and repairs here cost an absolute fortune.

Marina traffic can be a nightmare with all the road works, hopefully it will be better when the roadworks is finished and the tram line is working. Traffic in JLT is totally sorted now, although it does have it's rush hour traffic. It has great access to SZD for driving to Abu Dhabi. Can't help on the Greens.

I have heard Montexa in Satwa is great, its a british lady, but I have not used her so can't give a personal recommendation. I have used Dream Girls, Coventry, City Tailors and Tatiana and have been disappointed with all of them.

I had never even heard of it. I just looked it up and it is pretty unique, IB curriculum and French stream. Other than the out of the way location, if I was coming here for the first time, It would be top of my list to visit.

The other thing I find so dangerous is the places vehicles stop, Particularly taxis stopping on SZR to drop passengers on the road so they can hop over the barrier to the Metro.

We stayed in the Jetwing Blue in Negombo for one night and it was horrible, and it was supposed to be the best of the Jetwing hotels in Negombo. I would recommend you drive a few hours and stay in Bentota, we stayed in the Taj Vivanta and it was very nice.

I read that report too Livelytrish ! they did another one at a bus stop, a kid in the cold without a jacket with no money for the bus, most adults looked the other way, only a few people offered to help and I think only 1 woman took off her jacket and gave it to him.

I read the same as SandyDogg, it was totally innocent and the poor man must feel terrible to be all over the news. Luckily this incident turns out to be innocent, but it clearly shows how quick something like this can happen.

That doesn't sound right to take it all in a lump sum ! Is it a local company ? I would follow up on that, although it is tough to do that when you have just started a new job. We don't get our allowance in the salary, the company pay it directly to the landlord. It is a 'use it or lose it' allowance, if our rent is less than the allowance we don't get to pocket the difference.

I also was not expecting that, its a huge surprise. when it happened first, I expected it was suicide, as she had posted the photo of herself and her Mom just a few hours earlier. Apparently there are assertions that the place was 'cleaned' before the police and medics arrived,, hence why no drugs or parahanallia were found. <em>edited by mum2girls on 01/05/2014</em>

Miss Issipi, I lived in London as an ex-pat for 3 years and most families where I lived had a live-in nanny or au-pair, maybe it depends on the area one lives in. But every ex-pat assignment we have had in several countries, having a live-in domestic helper was the norm. In this part of the world, having a live in helper is the norm, so I don't understand why people are surprised or dismissive of people who do have help around the home or full-time carers for their kids when they go to work. <em>edited by mum2girls on 30/04/2014</em>

Not all working Moms have 9-5 jobs, which exclude travel !!! There are Mom's all over the world who hire domestic help, au-pairs and nannies. It is not a situation unique to Dubai. I just don't understand why some people harp on about this being a Dubai 'thing', Good on every parent for doing it the best they can, with help or without help. Some people are far too judgemental for their own good <em>edited by mum2girls on 30/04/2014</em>

You cannot refuse to pay her ticket home if you are not transferring her visa to another sponsor. You are legally obliged to send her home if you are cancelling her visa. When she gets back to her home country , her husband will have to do the necessary for her to return on his visa. My understanding is that you cannot directly transfer your sponsorship visa to her husbands spouse visa. Good luck with it all. <em>edited by mum2girls on 30/04/2014</em>

Most of the golf clubs do Ladies Clinics for beginners, I know for sure Arabian Ranches club, Dubai Creek, Montgomerie and Emirates do regular 8 week ladies clinics. I think around AED1000 for the package, but not sure. All of them also offer private one on one lessons with their golf pro's, private lessons costs around AED300-400 per lesson.

Di, thats why I am looking for a new endocrinologist. But then I had the same experience with a different Doctor today. Thanks for the recommendation on the other thread, I looked her up and I like her background, I also saw that there s also a Belgian Endocrinologist there too, so if she only focuses on Thyroid than I have another option at least.

Howdra have temporary maids, it costs about AED1,000 per week. From my experience they usually give you the inexperienced ones who are waiting to be placed in full time role. It's fine if it's only housekeeping and if you will be working from home. However if you have to go out to work, I would not leave an 18month old baby alone with an an unknown maid from one of these maid agencies.

Hacker are a good company here in UAE , and have a very good reputation in Europe. Siematic are great, but if you are dealing with BetterLife than I would not go near it. don't know anything about the other two, I am guessing they are bespoke kitchens, which could be perfect or a disaster. This is a great blog created by a Kitchen expert, http://www.european-kitchen-design.com/italian-kitchen-design/my-personal-top-20-european-kitchen-brands. Azdhu, I googled to see if I could find the article I had read/heard about a few weeks ago, so I could link it for the OP, I couldn't find the recent one, however, there were lots of other reports going back a few years, so prescription meds going out of stock here seems to be an annual occurrence. On a side note, Calpol cannot be found here anymore either.

Have you tried a hospital pharmacy ? I take a regular medication and found myself in the same situation as you, all the pharmacies were telling me it was out of stock and didn't know when it would be in stock again. Finally one pharmacist explained that they were not allowed distribute it anymore, and it could only be purchased from a hospital Pharmacy, sure enough, Saudi German had it in stock and so did City hospital pharmacy.

We were also delighted to discover them, however we soon found that they are not very reliable, orders often don't show up, on top of that they don't have a large selection of the Grape juice.
