Thanks for all your input, seems everyone finds them useful. Can someone just explain the updates to me? Someone said check before I buy - check what, where? To see if they have the latest version of maps on them? Are the updates random, or yearly, or what? Bought online? Someone also said about making a favorites list. Is that pulled from a list it comes with, or do you have to somehow input it yourself? Sorry, never had a GPS before.... Thanks! BuckeyeD The updates are just mapping software that is uploaded to your GPS. Whichever brand of GPS you decide to go with, ask the dealer you buy from, about the latest map for your GPS and where you can buy and upload new updates to maps a few months or years down the line (don't know how often the maps are updated). The favorites list is something you input yourself....so say you go to a friend's house often, you could add her location on your GPS as a favorite so that next time you want to visit, you just pull up her location from your favorite's list and get the route without having to put in a street address. As someone else mentioned you can save your favorite routes too if you know of a shortcut. HTH

I have been using LUSH solid shampoo and then also conditioner bars for 2 months and can't recommend it enough. You can get them put in tins so if you do any traveling it is brilliant. They are really not very expensive either compared to some of the salon brands. Ditto!! I LOVE their products. Expensive but you need to use just a tiny amount so they last for quite some time.

we have a Garmin nuvi each - when my husband updated them his worked perfectly and mine crashed !! Took it back to Garmin who replaced it FOC (warranty 2 years if you only use it withing this country)..Then just put all my favourites etc (which husband had previously downloaded) on to the new one...couldn't have been simpler and i now have the latest maps. Some minor hiccups around the diversions etc here but on the whole it's great - wouldn't be without it... We've had a Nokia GPS for a couple of years now...bought it for about 900 AED and its saved me from getting horribly lost several times. Even though they keep closing off some routes and opening up new ones, it really helps to at least get you to a familiar place. Check about map updates before you decide to buy it though. We just haven't bothered to spend the extra money to get an updated map coz I figure they'll just get outdated again :)

We have a Hoover that has both the gas and electric options, so you could always switch to gas if you decide to install a gas pipe. We've had it for 4 years without any problems and the food cooks fine.

if you want some lower calorie options that are tasty and carb free: breakfast: an omelet with spinach and organic valley low fat cheese snacks: cottage cheese with blueberries sugar free vanilla pudding with cinnamon (i like to add some fat free greek yogurt for a punch, you could add sliced banana too) soup: boil some butternut squash in veggie broth, puree it, add in some natural creamy peanut butter and a bit of heavy cream. garnish with a little paprika and chili powder you can also make a mock mashed potato out of cauliflower puree or the butternut squash my version of low calorie, no carb sliders: Pan fry some eggplant slices in a pan misted with olive oil. don't overcook to where they fall apart. About 2.5 cm thick slices. sprinkle with a little salt. meanwhile, mix irish lean ground beef dean and deluca seasonings for meat a couple splashes of tabasco sauce with smoke flavor, tbsp organic tomato puree make little patties that are the circumference of the egg plant slices. while these are pan frying, mix in a little bowl: fat free cream cheese 1/4 tsp tamarind paste dash of tarragon. mix well Slice a tomato and de-seed. layer: eggplant slice tomato slice beef patty spread the cream cheese mixture on top. note: you can use lamb mince; switch the tarragon to mint. Hope this gives you a couple of ideas. I did no or low carbs for ages!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yummmmm....thanks Beebers!! Gonna try some of these coz they sound so darned good! :)

Lashings of Nivea at night, then sleep in socks so it soaks in all night. My old granny's remedy and it works brilliantly (and is cheap). agree! I do the exact same thing! :) yup I use vaseline same results :) Just plain old Vaseline (the petroleum jelly not the moisturizer) works wonders for me too....I apply it every night before bed, just pull on a pair of old socks and voila...soft feet in the morning!

You can try Toys on Rent too. They have an FB page where they post all their play dates and they are usually themed ones and on Saturdays. I've been to a couple and they were great. Most of them are at Zabeel Park.

Hi Eli1979 If you are looking to buy a ready made water feature from a garden store and having it installed, you're probably looking at around a 1000 Dhs to do the piping and installation. If you are looking to build a custom one, the cost will vary widely depending on the size, the cladding material etc. etc. One of my friends had a water feature designed and built for Dhs 9000...it was pretty elaborate with a stone clad water wall and ledges. Most pool companies will do water features...if you have a pool maintenance company you can ask them.

Try watering less often....its also cooler now so no need to water more than once a week. Stick your finger into the pot and if its dry about an inch down, then water.

Yellow leaves could be too much water...is it outdoors or in a pot? Also remember it needs full sun...if its flowering, its probably doing ok on the sun.

The nappy rash cream from Mothercare works really well for my daughter. Once the rash is gone (which usually takes a couple of days), I apply a very light layer of baby oil ( I use the Himalaya herbal winter cherry and olive oil) before putting on a fresh nappy. This has helped a lot in reducing the new rashes from appearing. Most important is to dry her out as much as you can before you apply the oil and new nappy. This helps prevent the poo sticking and makes it easier to clean. Hope this helps. Good luck.

We go to Dr. Samitha at Bur Juman (UniCare)...she is very responsive and calm....you can ask her anything that's on your mind without feeling like its a silly question. Only problem is she does travel quite a bit so she is sometimes out of town...but she responds with an sms. edited by mum2k on 05/02/2012 edited by mum2k on 06/02/2012

http://www.takemyjunkuae.com/ You can call them to come pick up or fill out an online form and they'll call you back to schedule a pick up. These guys are great, they came and took all our old stuff. Just give them some fuel money as a gesture. Yup they are...they'll even pay you a reasonable amount if your furniture is in good condition. A lot of the stuff they pick up is restored and used in labor camps so that's an added plus!!

We used to shop at Spinneys too...my DH had this idea that meat and fruit elsewhere are not as good...We now shop mostly at LuLu's and C4...they are both reasonably priced and the meat and produce at both are pretty good...haven't had a bad experience yet. LuLu's has really fresh fish but avoid Fridays and Saturdays if you can....too crowded!

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone would share which websites or recruitment companies they approach if looking for part time work and what working hours are suitable for mums looking to do some work around school hours? Many thanks in advance for any info shared. Hi Dunight, If you're looking to work from home in your spare time, check out www.oDesk.com. Sign up is free....you do have to read the website rules and pass a test before you can actually start applying for jobs. The site is totally legit...you bid for jobs and employers select you based on your qualifications. I do some writing in my spare time....there are a ton of other jobs too and you get paid on completion of the work. I looked on sooo many websites before finding this one and am very happy with it. Time commitment is totally up to you...the more time you are able to put in, the more you get paid. Might be a good option for you. Good luck!

Can anyone tell me where I can buy Frey Bentos pies in Dubai? I've looked at several supermarkets but none seem to stock them. I looked at the option of ordering from the UK but the shipping is way too much. TIA edited by mum2k on 03/02/2012

Can't say they will or not as my neighbours "Damas" started to lift the garden wall foundations of our villa. I wouldn't chance it though once they start looking for water who knows. I will try and find my Dubai garden book and look up the name of a hedge I plated. It had a lovely yellow flower and grew like spit ( like most things in Dubai !!)a small turmpet like little flower, not the big trumpet creeper. Possibly ask at the garden souk, they always gave me a botanical lesson when I went shopping !! The hedge is called thevetia....great hedge to plant here in Dubai...grows really well

I understand this is a very broad subject and maybe very personal as well. I am starting to question a few things about my parenting and would like to hear your opinions. In this day and age where children have so much and want even more; I often find myself saying "NO" to a lot of things my children want and request. Where does one draw the line, without becoming a parent your child resents? So my question to you is, what do you think a child's basic and beyond RIGHTS are? And what classifies as a privilege? Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. I'm new to EW and a fairly new parent too...I have an adorable 13 month old daughter and I can already see her emerging as a strong personality with definite wants...even at this age!! :) A good rule that works for me is to say 'NO' when she is either endangering herself or becoming a nuisance to someone else...otherwise she has free reign. I'll probably follow this as she grows up too making sure to take the time out to explain why certain things are a definite 'NO'. As far as material wants I think maintaining a balance is important....in today's world and especially here in the UAE, its easy to get carried away buying your kids whatever they want. So even though you can't say 'no' to everything they want you can say yes sometimes to some of the things they want....just make sure that the methodyou choose to discipline them is in keeping with your personal value system. As for feeling guilty, I just do the best I can and make the best decisions for right now....I'm not thinking too far into the future ;)
