AHS said it. My dad's migraines were triggered by seafood, which he used to inhale upon seeing and unfortunately suffered for the day after. My migraines were triggered by stress. I would take painkillers and make sure to be in a really dark room and there had to be no noise. Hard when I was living in dorms. When I realized that mine were triggered by stress (only in my late 20s, after 10 years of migraines), and that the first symptom to a migraine coming up was a tense back, I would immediately stop whatever I was doing, go for a run/swim, prioritize work, and even ask a friend to give me a back massage. And yes, water, water, water.

My 7 year old was diagnosed when she was 5. It was initially difficult coming from a place where gluten free products were readily available. I found the range here limited but it is definitely better. My daughter usually eats before we go out or I pack food for her. If we go to a birthday party, I make treats for her to bring so she does not feel left out when everyone is having cake. She has pain as a brake. She knows that eating a crumb of gluten will cause her pain and so has learned to refuse anything that is given to her. Some kids I know react differently as Italymom mentioned. They don't experience any pain and so the temptation is very great. I do buy some gluten free snacks but usually make my own banana bread, cookies, popsicles, etc.

I used to have hair that my dad called a "bird's nest". No matter what I tried it was just untameable. So then I relaxed it. I don't know if you are open to relaxing your hair (straightening it, basically) but that's what worked for me. I've used irons (and argan oil to help with protecting my hair) but my hair is so thick and really wavy and long that it just took too much time.

Yes, try Cebu Pacific but according to their website, they will be operating out of Sharjah Airport from May to July due to runway closures in Dubai. Don't know if that would be an issue.

Hi mumto2, Maids come under different laws than employees in the public and private sectors. Companies can employ someone on their spouses visa if they then provide them with a labour card or work permit but they don't then have to provide a residence visa... So it's cheaper for the company. HTH EW Admin Ah. So there IS something else that has to be provided by the employer. I thought it was just the letter that was needed. Thank you, Admin.

Also curious about this. There are many jobs out there looking to hire people on their spouse's visa. And all they needed was a no objection letter from the spouse. This would not be the same for a nanny/cleaner on a husband's visa? Or is it because it's a nanny/cleaner vs teaching (for example) job that makes the difference?

I don't mean to second guess you or the nursery without knowing the details, but does a 3yo at nursery really need a shadow teacher ? seems a bit extreme to me, even with a speech delay. That's what I thought too when I read OP's post. My daughter (and another child in her pre-school class) had speech delay and the recommendation was speech therapy (this was back home in Canada, btw). The kids were fine in class. They understood the teacher, were able to do what was required of them, and while their speech was not as comprehensible as the other children, they were still understood. Is your little one getting therapy outside of class?

Surely this can't be right?? [b'>500 AED![/b'> I was possibly not in a proper spot and may have been on a single yellow line (in amongst a whole line of other cars next to the curb in Motor City) - but this seems a bit steep. And points as well!! Oh well, lesson learnt I guess :-([b'>[/b'> Yup 500 AED sounds about right. DH was there about a month ago. He was looking for a spot, saw a car pull out, he pulled in, and and 30 minutes later, he came back to the car and saw the slip. A very expensive lunch he bought at spinneys.

Sometimes I get asked and sometimes I don't. I have traveled with and without a letter but started keeping one with our passports, just saves a hassle (as some costumes/immigrations agents like to show who is boss). Our letter states my husbands name and the names of our children. It also states that he is aware I am traveling by myself with them. I also have a copy of his passport and residence visa attached. There is not date as I was told by a US costumes person it was ok to be opened ended. It is not notarized either. I am Canadian and therefore travel on a Canadian passport so think it more depends on the agent you encounter. Have only been asked for said letter in the US or Canada. Hope this helps. We're Canadians too and I get asked all the time in Canada or the States. My husband and I are of different ethnicities and my kids take after his skin colour and looks. Like Rickadon, we carry a letter with us all the time plus photocopies of everything. The details we have on our letter are very similar to Rickadon. There are templates available online as well. I got mine off Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

I am now starting to apply for work here and found one on a recruiter's website back home. I also saw the job posted on the company's website. I was wondering which one I should apply through, if there is one that is better. Will applying through the recruiter be different than applying directly to the company?

If you are able to get your hands on NeilMed nasal rinse, get it. I used to have very bad allergies and there was one year, back home when it was so bad nothing worked. Nasonex, flonase...nothing. At the recommendation of a friend, I tried NeilMed and almost immediately I was fine. I rinsed in the morning and the evening and the entire spring and summer, I felt fantastic. DH and I use it now when we have a cold (not just for allergies) as it really helps. Note that it's not a spray but a rinse.

We were there on New Year's for the first time. Note to self: Do not go on a public holiday. There were just too many people. We parked just outside of Gate 1, which was free parking. If I walked around the perimeter without stopping to smell the flowers, I think it would only take me 20 minutes. It's not very big. For 20dhs per person, I would definitely go again.

Anyone bought the mobile app online? I want to pay on a different credit card to the one on my Apple Store so I want to buy the app through the website, but anybody know how I then get it on my phone? Just bought the 'mobile product' online.... First you download the app onto your mobile. Then you log onto the Entertainer website to buy the 'product' (ie. vouchers). I could only buy the product via my home laptop, their website wouldn't work via iphone or ipad. Once you have bought the product, it automatically unlocks the vouchers that were in your app (I think it must sync via the mobile phone numbers that you need to register). Also worth noting is that Gulf News are running a subscription offer: a year's subscription and 400AED worth of vouchers for Club Apparel outlets, for 400AED. So you could use the vouchers to buy entertainer books at BooksPlus (with Club Apparel vouchers). I guess this is similar to the offer that The National were running this time last year (but they aren't doing this year). We just got our vouchers a few days ago but the vouchers can only be used at selected outlets, Books Plus is NOT one of them.

Tell me about it! I miss the thrift stores back home. I have bought boxes and boxes of Lego for my kids and their cousins from there. And they literally only cost me a few dollars. Yes, many of them were not complete sets but hey! Part of the fun of Lego is building your own thing.

Similar experience but not with Parcelforce. It was registered mail from Canada and when we tracked it, Canadapost said that an attempted delivery was made and notification card was left. As with you, no card was left and no delivery was made (and there is ALWAYS someone here). DH went to the postoffice in Karama and they were only able to locate the mail 1 week later.

You attempt to parallel park in a spot that is CLEARLY too small for your vehicle. You are so determined to make your vehicle fit that you completely ignore the people in the car behind this spot waiting to get out (you really should wait for them to leave cos that would give you a bit more space). You back in and out and in and out a few times! Obviously it still is not clear to you that the space is too small!. You still ignore the car parked behind and you also ignore your sensors and your rearview camera. The only thing that stops you from continuing in your attempt is when you HIT THE CAR BEHIND YOU!!!

Some friends of ours got married overseas and stopped over in Dubai en route back to the States (they are both americans). Unfortunately, they did not have their marriage certificate with them (his dad took it as he was so sure our friend would lose it). They had their wedding photos but that was not accepted as proof of marriage. They were not allowed to stay in the same room.

For me, complete darkness and silence helped. I had to also take medication but even with those, I had to be in a dark room and it had to be completely silent in the house. If my mom was around, she would give me a full body massage and that helped greatly.

I got this off the UAE embassy website (Ottawa): "Canadian passport holders will be granted entry free of charge to the UAE with their visit arrival stamp, again, issued upon arrival in the UAE. No application in advance of travel is necessary. Please know that the Canadian passport will be stamped for 30 days upon arrival. If further stay is required, an application for an extension should be made to the local General Directorate of Residence and Foreign Affairs three days prior to the expiry date."

Never been to the Paris one but I can say that we had a fantastic time in HK. We went on the whim. We had about a 9 hour layover in HK and just wanted to get out. DH said, "Let's go to Disneyland. Let's just drive by and then go somewhere else." Well the drive by ended up being a 5 hour Disney stay. And even though it was short, we and especially our kids enjoyed every minute of it. And yes, it was still as magical as the other Disneylands we've been to.

I went to India over the summer and applied for a visa. You do not apply for a visa at the embassy. You have to go to a service centre. THere was a very short line up and I was in and out in 15 minutes. I opted for the normal service and while they said 1 week, it only took 3 days for me to get it. I think express service is 24 hours.

Maybe it is sand flies when you are out walking - they love to attack in the late afternoon just before sunset! I always use a home remedy to repel them: Any normal oil - eg baby oil or olive oil - mixed with either geranium oil or lemon grass oil Rub this concoction on your arms and legs before you go walking in the later afternoon and nothing will bite you but you will smell nice! mrsb. Where can I buy the geranium and lemon grass oil? TIA

While collecting things is very sweet, more benefit will come from donating money to reputable agencies eg Save The Children, International Red Cross, MSF etc. It costs a LOT of money to send food/goods overseas and since comms and roads etc are out and will be for some time, the chance of the goods getting to their destination in a timely manner without spoiling, if at all, is slim to none. Not wanting to put a dampener on things, but if you want to help NOW, think money not produce. I agree and please be careful when choosing an agency to donate through. I would highly recommend that you avoid using any Philippines based agencies as they are as corrupt as the government and the chances or your money reaching the victims is nil to nothing. Pick an agency from the above Your best bet for donating back to the community is to give money to a filipina here that you know. Its an idea that has gained a lot of ground amongst aid agencies in recent years - that basic cash transfers help communities in need faster than any other assistance. They will send it back and their family will use it as needed, buying things in the community, which helps get the economy back on its feet. Agree. I would choose to go this route as well.

The storm (Haiyan or Yolanda, as it is known in the Philippines) hit the central islands of Cebu, Samar, Leyte... most specifically Tacloban City in Leyte. I just spoke to my family who live on the island of Luzon and they had strong rains. they said that the devastation in the central islands is devastating. They do not know yet how many casualties there are because communications are down. Just to add a bit more perspective on how strong this storm was: Hurricane Katrina had sustained winds of 175 mph and gusts of 215mph. Haiyan/Yolanda had sustained winds of 195 mph and gusts of 235 mph.

Panang Curry is very easy. I bought the mix either from Geant or Hyperpanda. I can't remember now. It is pretty spicy but you can add more coconut milk to it. You'll have to add salt if you do add more coconut milk.

Ah... I was wondering when you were going back. I'll dig up her number and post it ASAP. BTW, whenever I'm home, I always go to her for maintenance. I had a muscular problem (since I was a child) that docs told me to treat with tylenol. After 2 massages with her, the pain went. I have been pain free the past 3 years since going to her.

When my husband wrecked his lower back a few years ago, I told him to go to my Chinese doc. He was skeptical at first but nothing was helping him at all. Meds and other therapy did not work. So he decided to give my Chinese doc a try. My doc does not use needles. She uses something like a pen and just massages your entire body. After the massage, she told my husband it will hurt for a day but it should be fine after. She was right. No meds were needed. All he did was to get that massage from her and he was fine. Unfortunately, this was in YVR. Maybe alternative medicine can help and maybe one of the ladies here can recommend someone.

Toastmasters is not conversational but it helps with building confidence and public speaking skills. You will also get to talk with other speakers before and after the sessions which is great for building relationships AND conversational skills. There is a Dubai Chapter. Not sure of the website address but you can google it.
