I'm not sure if it's called a trip ticket but DH went to the RTA today to get the document needed to drive to Saudi. DH seems to think that since we have all the documents for driving, it does not matter that it says AIR on the visa. It matters to me, however, as I don't want to drive all the way to the border only to be turned back. I will call the embassy tomorrow. Thanks SG.

So we checked our visas and it says that the mode of travel is AIR. We have our documents ready for travelling by land, will we still be allowed to cross the border even if our visa says AIR? Anyone know? TIA

We went booster seat shopping last night and I had assumed that all boosters had either the isofix or the latch system. Didn't realize that most don't. I was just wondering about the safety of the ones that don't have the isofix/latch system. Would like to read some of your opinions. Thanks.

You can contact the Philippine Overseas Labour Office: http://www.polodubai.com I read this on their website as one of the things they do: a. Ensure the promotion and protection of the welfare and interests of OFWs and assist them in all problems arising out of employer-employee relationships; They should be able to advise.

I went onto the MOL website and read/skimmed through the labour law. Quote: ARTICLE (3)* The provisions of this Law are not applicable to the following categories: a) Officials, employees and workers of the Federal Government, Governmental Departments of the Member Emirates of the State, Officials, employees and workers of municipalities as well as other officials, employees and workers, working in Federal and local public Departments and organizations, as well as the officials, employees and workers appointed for Governmental Federal and Local Projects. b) Members of the Armed Forces of Police and Security. [u'>[i'>c) Domestic servants working in Private residences and the like.[/i'>[/u'> d) Workers employed in Agriculture or pastures, other than those persons employed in the agricultural corporations engaged in processing their products or those permanently engaged in operating or repairing mechanical machines required for Agriculture. I would be interested in knowing what law, if any, these employees are under. The labour law states provisions/rights of employees under the labour law. Where can I find the same for occupations NOT under the labour law? Is it also in MOL website? TIA

Not sure if it is illegal to work for someone else part time if you have the approval of your sponsor, it is supposed to be in writing I think (perhaps EW ladies can clarify that. A 'DRAFT' law has been proposed to ensure that maids 'do not' work for anyone but their sponsor but it hasn't been signed off by the Ministry yet. So I think they all know and are making the most of this before it officially comes in. Your comments would be appreciated.... This was just in the news recently and I quote: "Under the UAE Labour Laws, holders of employment visa from other sponsors are not allowed to work part-time for any event unless permitted by the sponsor. Visit visa holders are also not allowed to work." If this does not pertain to maids, which jobs then? Maids are not under the labor law, so I guess it's any other job. They are not under the labour law? Wow! I need to read up on the labour law here to understand. I just assumed that anyone working (legally) in Dubai whether maid or CEO are all under the labour law.

We bought one in March from ACE at Festival City. I like the steam option. It's does not leave the floor wet. HOWEVER, I am now looking for a simple stick vacuum cleaner for the crumb spills, etc. See, the karcher is heavy and just to vacuum, I have to fill up the canister with water and then clean it up afterwards. So I don't find it convenient for a crumb spill or cleaning up after my kids are done their school work and I want to vacuum their eraser dust. I also find that it's not as powerful as I expected. I had a stick vacuum cleaner back home and you could literally just leave it standing in one corner and it would suck anything within a 3 foot radius. My Karcher needs you to put the stick exactly over the dirt. Not a biggie for me but just surprised at the lack of suction power (in comparison with my vacuum at home).

This is really scary. I keep my car keys near me when I sleep so that if I need to hit the panic button it's easy to access. That extra noise might scare someone off. Take care. This is a great idea. Not only will the alarm startle them but it draws attention that the thieves do not want. I have a couple of friends back home who work in the police force and their advice was to: 1. check the outside of your house. Are there tools lying around? Are there ladders? Even patio furniture? These help thieves. They help them pry open windows (tools) and they help thieves get up to the higher floors (ladders/furniture). 2. Lights, beware of dog signs (even if you do not have one) help. 3. The panic button to set off your car alarm is great. 4. If they do get inside, make as much noise as possible: throw something at your window to break it. 5. DO NOT LET FEAR overcome you. That is their main weapon. Fear paralyses and that is what they want. If you hear someone trying to open the door, switch on lights, press panic button, call security. Don't wait and see what happens.

My girls and I had HFM disease a couple of years ago. It is very contagious. We were all advised to confine ourselves at home. No visitors and really, no going out at all. It IS painful and there is much discomfort especially if there are sores in the mouth. What helped me was painkillers and tea tree oil for the mouth sores. For my girls, they were only 12 months and 2.5 years so painkillers and orajel for their mouth sores.

I attended an Indian wedding last year and having attended a few prior, I knew that wearing a saree or a lengha would be the best in order to "fit in". But I did not want to wear a saree as I am not comfortable in them. So what I did was to get saree material and had an outfit sewn: long skirt, a sleeveless blouse (the tailor used the most embroidered part of the saree material to make this) and a bolero. It looked great. I was comfortable and I "fit in" with the lovely colours and embroidery every one had on.

I remember reading in the National newspaper recently several similar cases where people had committed credit card fraud to pay traffic fines with AD police. The article was quite detailed with quotes from AD police and bank etc. However the National paper's search engine is useless and despite several searches with relevant terms I cannot find the article. Perhaps if you contacted the National they could let you have a copy as I think it quoted sources from AD police on this subject - could be a starting point for you as they are obviously familiar with this happening. This is the article I found on Gulf News: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/crook-hacks-dubai-man-s-credit-card-to-pay-abu-dhabi-police-1.1050943

Hi Beebers, Thank you so much for your response. I'm 37 and this extra weight started piling on 6 years ago. I never really heeded my obstetrician's advice when he said, "You're not eating for two. Eat only for one." And yes, I was a yoyo dieter. With my eating, recently, I've really only cut down a lot on my crabs and sweets, etc. I do eat meat and really need to up my fish intake. We have been on a gluten free diet for about 4 months now because of my daughter who was diagnosed with celiac. You've also hit the nail when you mentioned sleep and stress. I lack the former and am burdened by the latter. I have told myself to just persevere and push on. I have, after all, given myself a year. Thank you again for your encouragement and advice. Will update you.

I have about 15 kgs to lose and I've given myself a year to reach that goal. I started about 6 weeks ago. A huge change in my diet: smaller portions, more water, NO fast-food, I cook at home from scratch...AND I also started doing the 30-day shred. Been doing it for about a month now. The result? A 2 pound loss and 2 cm (NOT inches) loss. Now if this was 3 years ago, I would have lost 3 pounds the first week. But I'm not sure what's going on this time. My gall bladder was taken out a couple of years ago. Does that affect my weight loss ( or NON-weight loss)? Also, I'm thinking I may have hypothyroidism. Who do I go to to get that checked? Are there natural alternatives to help with that? I don't really want to take any pills for it. Thanks for reading.

Yes. I've always taken my kids' medicine with me on the plane BUT make sure, if in liquid form, that they are in 100 ml bottles. I had brought a 125 ml bottle with me (even though there was only 50 ml left in the bottle) and that got taken away.

what is a letter of consent? Is that a letter written by your husband? Is that letter attested by any authority? Thanks. It's a letter signed by my husband or myself (depending on who is giving the consent) and then notarized by a lawyer/notary public. I notarized mine at the embassy. There's lots of consent templates on the net that you can use.

Why we decided to homeschool: 1. Moving to Dubai requires us to travel home and back here quite a bit. Homeschooling gives us that flexibility. 2. School fees are high here. We get government funding to teach our children. Yes. we get PAID to teach them! 3. Homeschooling has enabled me to teach them according to their learning style. My children are kinaesthetic learners and excel when taught according to their learning style. etc... Social Interaction: My family is involved at church. We also have relatives here, who have kids the age of ours, whom we hang out with. My kids are registered in other activities such as gymnastics. So we do get to interact with others. We are hardly cooped up at home. We love homeschool. Before coming here a few months ago, I taught 10 years at a university back in Canada. I've taught many home schooled kids and they are hardly socially inept. They have all, and I do mean all, been star students in my classes. I talked to some of them before coming here to ask about their experiences and they were all positive. There were some negative comments such as, "Oh the curriculum mom used one year was the most boring one. I'll never do that one for my kids." But on the whole their experience was wonderful.

HI Big Blue, If you gave birth in Canada, it will be a lot faster. You apply for the birth certificate (not a citizenship card) which you will get within a month or even less and then apply for a passport which you can get (at least from our experience) within 2 weeks.

Vera, I have not had an ectopic but do have 2 friends who had ectopic pregnancies. I myself had a miscarriage last year. My doctor told me that there was no problem in trying to have another baby immediately BUT the concern is more the emotional, mental state. In losing a pregnancy it is more the non-physical that takes a lot longer to heal than the physical. That was also the case with my two friends. My advice would be to talk to a doctor with regards to the physical/medical part of it and for the other kinds of support, we are here. As for my two friends, one of them now has two healthy little ones and the other one has a bouncing baby boy. ps. I'm new to Dubai so I can't advice on which doctor to see.

hi mumto2, my own daughter also has Celiac, I am just confused a little. Did they give you the diagnosis without the biopsy? Because you cant actually diagnose Celiac disease by blood test alone. Or did they put her down as a probable Celiac and meaning to do a gluten force and biopsy once she is older? I am genuinely interested, sorry if my questions appear intrusive. Its very hard to find doctors here who are knowledgeable in the disease. Hi Purple, Sorry I didn't go further. Yes, we did get a biopsy done. The blood test we did at home but the biopsy we did here, only because we did not have the time to do it at home. It is true that there is not much support (medical) available here. I'm fortunate to have a gastroenterologist in my family and a few friends who have kids that are celiac and whose kids have similar difficulties as mine.

Hi. My eldest daughter is like yours. She was diagnosed with speech delay at the age of 4. A couple of things: 1. I noticed she was delayed right when she was about 3 and talked to my family doctor about it. He said that as long as she is progressing, there is nothing to worry about. He did suggest a hearing test, which we did and she passed it. So no hearing issues there. Then eventually we were able to get on the waiting list for a speech therapist and a year later started therapy. The therapist said the same thing as my doctor: "As long as her speech is progressing, don't worry too much about it. We get concerned only when she is regressing." The therapist did do a speech test on my daughter and my daughter was diagnosed with speech delay. She started therapy and thrived. This was all back home in Canada. My therapist gave me materials to be able to help my daughter over here. 2. A couple of my friends and i were just chatting about allergies a few months ago and I just started googling these allergies and what a surprise I got when I read that there could be a co-relation between speech delay and diet. I spoke to my girl's therapist about it and she said yes. In fact she had a little boy who was diagnosed to be developmentally delayed come to her for therapy. A few weeks later this little boy was diagnosed with celiac disease. After he was put on a gluten-free diet, the boy's speech started to come and now he is thriving. he was NOT developmentally delayed. He just needed a change in his diet as this was affecting him. Anyways, I talked to our family doctor about it. Now I knew that co-relation does not necessarily mean causation BUT i wanted to cover my bases. I asked our doctor if we could please do a blood test on my daughter. He referred me to a paediatrician who checked my girl and basically did the blood test because the symptoms were there: speech delay, constipation, slow growth. A week after the blood test, we got the results and my daughter was a high positive for celiac. We just started the gluten free diet and I can see her doing much better. Her speech has definitely improved albeit slowly. Again, she is progressing and that's a good sign. I would encourage you to consult with a speech therapist. Your little one will do well.
