Thank you ladies for your info. I went for the double whammy (and more) e mailed the lady you'd all mentioned on here - got a lovely e mail from an outside source with info. Called the consulate who were fab. abd them spent a wasted 2 hours at the airport and blubbed at them all!! Anyhow, germany and consulatte are fab my boys pasports sent this arvo. Flights changed (Virgin) wih no stress. We are off as a whole family (DH included and much needed) on Monday. I would say that the British consul were great - bless her she dealt with an emotional' /perhaps hysetial woman (can't type small kitten causing probs) However.if anyone tells you to go to the airport 4 a exit visa - tell 'em to poke it coz it's a waste of time! I'm so glad you got it sorted. The British Embassy were very nice when I spoke to them too.

Call Madras Pest Control 042971787. I had cockroaches once and never saw one again after Madras had been. They are 200 dhs (I believe) and give a 6 mont guarantee. Call them now and theyll probably come out today. Good luck.

Swils darling, my heart goes out to you, so sorry to hear your news. Despite what Zanie said, I'd actually recommend going straight to the embassy this morning, get there at 7.45 so you're as close as first in the queue when they open at 8am. They'll be able to tell you on the spot exactly what you need to do & if you then need to go to Bur Dubai Police station you have time to do so and then get back to the embassy to complete whatever paperwork is required today. When en route to Bur Dubai call your airline and change the flights.....(ie once you know what's required from the embassy). If you're flying Emirates they do not charge for flight changes when it's due to a death (OH had this back in Feb). A family death is a DEFINATE ok for an emergency travel doc!!! Really good luck and do let us know how you get on today. Hugs to you and your family xxx I'm so sorry to hear your terrible news Swils. Don't forget to take any documentation you do have with you to the embassy ie birth certificates etc, unless of course these are with dusseldorf, in which case ask Suwannee to email them to the embassy. You should be able to get this sorted. The last thing you probably need right now is all of this added stress. Good luck! edited by Mushroom on 08/06/2011

Thanks so much girls. I also contacted Suwannee this afternoon by email and she called me half an hour later informing me would oversee my passport being completed and dispatched by Thursday at the latest. So, looks like no need for emergency passport after all and hopefully get my UAE visa renewed before I leave next week. XXX That's great news Zannie. Suwannee appears to have become expatwoman's personal passport officer. JOKE - please everyone - do not take that seriously and inundate the poor woman.

I am so grateful Loopy Lotti, thank you so much. There is no way I would be making my flight on Monday if it wasn't for you (and of course Suwannee). I would really like to do something to thank Suwannee for processing it so quickly for me (our cc was only debited on the 30th May) but I wonder whether the Dusseldorf office would be annoyed if they knew she was helping people like this not least because they are losing money on their ridiculous cc phone costs. She never asked where I got her email address from - I wonder at what point she is giong to question all of these Dubai emails! Does she realise she is becoming famous here!

They called me too today. Mine will hopefully be leaving Germany tomorrow. :) :) :) Can almost hear your sigh of relief from here!! Thank goodness for that ..... Fingers and toes crossed for everyone else's! When I posted mine off I also had the delusion that it would be a 10 day / max 2 week turnaround from what friends & colleagues had said ....... such a shame it's all gone so t!ts up this summer & caused us all so much stress eh! I think the consulate should offer a 'Waiting for passport to return counselling session, how to cope with the stress' Free of charge!!! Ha ha. I'd sign up for sure.

I emailed Suwanee and she is amazing. She called us within about an hour and got it processed and the passport along with our documents will be dhl'ed from germany either this afternoon or tomorrow and we should have it back within 48 hours! I can not thank her and LOOPY for posting the details enough. I am so relieved. Immigration have told us it is not a problem to get an exit visa in an about hour as long as we have the documentation and we can sort the residence visa out on our return. I would say to email Suwanee if its an emergency - ie travel within about a week but otherwise not so we do not inundate her and she doesn't help anymore. I have asked her for a contact (ie her boss) so I can send a letter of praise as to how helpful she has been.

I've just spoken to the British Consulate here regarding Emergency Passports. They can issue you one within a day ( not Sundays, you can order one and collect on a Monday! But someday service Monday -Thursday 8am - 11am). Although, one thing you will need to do is request an exit form from the UAE Immigration as the emergency passport will obviously not have your residency visa/UAE entry stamp, otherwise you will encounter questions and holdup at the airport when trying to leave. You'll need to take copy of your old passport (if you're renewing), 2x passport photos, flight ticket or proof of travel and police report (you only need this if you have reported your passport lost or stolen with the police here). And the fee.... 625AED! They'll only cancel your passport application in Dusseldorf if hasn't been processed yet. However, just because they've taken your money doesn't mean the passport IS in process, so you'll need to check with them. It's a pain in the @rse, as a lot of running around just before you leave, but seems straight forward and will enable to leave as planned. So don't panic, we're all doing the best we can to hurry our passports along, but this is what we'll need to do if the worst happens and our passport doesnt return in time. Yep they pretty much told me the same thing, although said it wouldn't affect the original application atall. My problem though is that because it is baby's first passport I have to take the original documents, which are all in Dusseldorf. They will however accept scanned copies from the Dusseldorf passport office. In order to get the scanned documents the UK have to send a request to Dusseldorf and it is a 3 day response as to whether they will agree to be willing to scan and email them. I'm not sure what the costs are for the exit pass but fyi the typing centre fees are approx 200 dhs.

I think I said this earlier, if you are not travelling to the UK, an emergency passport will NOT get you back into Dubai, you will have to add on a trip to the UK to get a passport there at one of their centres. And, they cancel your passport application in Dusseldorf, you have to re-apply ( and get all of your documents back from Dusseldorf ), and you have to pay again. So very costly and inconvenient, but then I guess missing a holiday or a flight to the UK is costly and inconvenient, which leaves you a bit in a no win situation! I got all this info from embassy, when I was in a similar situation and thought I would need an emergency passport. Thankfully, my came back after 4 weeks, but it seems to be worse now. I remember the panic well and I remember the costly phone calls who BTW are not up to date, cos the last time I called them, they told me that my passport had been printed and quality checked and was waiting to be dispatched, I then went to pick up the kids from school and when I got home, the passport had been delivered! edited by RebeccaS on 07/06/2011 Thanks RebeccaS. It is not a problem getting back into the country as we are away for 3 months, enough time to reissue and get the new passport to us. The british embassy told me that Dusseldorf will not cancel the process of the passport and will continue but that the emergency passport will only be valid for 1 trip. I'm sure you're probably right though as any excuse to get more money! It is going to be costly enough, without that as an added expense of reapplying. The thought of being stuck here until mid July just doesn't seem right.

I spoke to someone at their helpline late last night. I sent mine beginning of May, and travelling a week tomorrow. The helpline told me there was no problem with my passport and currently 'in process'. I explained our situation and he has put request in to speed up the delivery. However, he informed me to call again on Thursday if passport not received by then, as need to give UK Consulate here 5 days notice to arrange emergency passport if necessary. He sounded confident I would get passport back in time, but to call again for a more definite return date. No point me getting stressed, i've done all I can so far. I'll follow his advice and play by ear. Good luck, hopefully you will get it back in time. I am meant to be travelling on Monday and no sign of my daughters passport. The embassy told me they can arrange an emergency passport in a day but they need Dusseldorf to scan and email the documents to them directly... Easier said than done with a 3 day response to email timeline from UK to Dusseldorf!!!!

So I called the number again this morning and was told that it can take 6 weeks from when the credit card is debited!! I wish they would all, at least, give the same information each time. Last time they told us 2 weeks. Oh and it took all morning to find this information out as their systems were down for hours. Has anybody managed to get an emergency passport whilst their passport is being processed in Dusseldorf?

Mushroom they told me on the phone not a week ago, that it *could* take 4 weeks after they process the CC. (sheesh, nothing like confusing people) Do you have a good PRO to assist with your LO's visa. I can give you a number?... Yes and by the sounds of everybody on here, 4 weeks is probably more likely. I am going to call the embassy today and see if there is an alternative way of us leaving the country without a passport. Thank you so much for offering the PRO. My husband's HR department will be processing it though so presumably it's the same? He has always been very knowledgable and efficient in the past but I have no idea why he's saying it's not a problem with the visa....

We spoke to the passport office today (the expensive number directs you to the UK btw even though the passports are being processed in Germany....!!???) and they seemed hopeful that we will get ours back before next Monday.... I'm not so positive but the representative said they try their best to accommodate everybodies travel plans as per the covering letter. He also said that it should take 2 and a half weeks MAXIMUM from when your credit card has been debited as that is when they begin processing. Thought I would share this for all those who are worried. The visa for my newborn though is another issue. Can I get a pass for my baby to leave the country without a visa? Does anybody know? edited by Mushroom on 06/06/2011

Oh no, I've just read this thread and am now really panicking. I sent my new baby's passport off on the 17th May, the passport office in Dusseldorf received it on the 19th May, our credit card was debited on the 30th May and we travel next Monday (the 13th June). Is there ANY chance whatsoever we are going to get the passport back? Is there anybody out there who has got there's back in under 4 weeks? I did it this way cos everybody was telling me they got theirs back in 10 days/2 weeks. It looks like it's a busy time a year presumably?...... Arrrgggg..... Does anybody know if there is another way to leave the country with a newborn without getting their passport? I know there is a special exit pass you can get but I believe this is only relevant for UK travel? Can anybody help because after reading this thread I'm presuming there is no way we are going to get my baby's passport back next week. The passports is the least of your problems you must have a visa put in otherwise you will have real problems leaving and coming back in the UAE. Just call the numbers and chase the passport up and get your paperwork organised and ready for the residence visa etc to be put in. Thanks Boomerang. I have been saying this to my husband for months but his HR guy is saying it's not a problem... not quite sure how..... Why do I get the feeling I'm not going anywhere for a while.....

We used to have one and we would definitely recommend it, but only the wheeled one (when we bought it you could get it with wheels or without, don't know if they still sell the non-wheeled version). Even once the Bugaboo was inside there was plenty of space to fill with other stuff, and of course baby strollers don't count towards your luggage allowance ;) I think if your Bugaboo is still within its warranty, you're required to use the official Bugaboo case for airline travel if you want to be able to make any warranty claims, but I'm not 100% on that. Thank you for your advice edna.welthorpe and I shall check out the warranty terms for travel.

I'm about to have my 3rd c section, my 1st scar was amazing 3 ins long-done in UK. The 2nd one done here was done 2mm above the first scar and around 1 inch longer each side and I was left with a 'pouch' above which no matter how much exercise I did I couldn't get rid of it and I'm only 8 stone so it wasn't fat. So with this one I want to find an ob/gyne who will remove this pouch and both scars and leave me with one neat scar, has anyone had this done and is it possible? My dr said she would only go through one of the existing scars, so now I'm looking for other drs who may be willing to remove the old one? Why do they cut above the original one, I really don't understand. It's only 2mm so it should be in theory quite easy to cut both and join them up. Ive heard lots of talk about this being easily done but I couldn't tell you what obs/gyn will do it apart from by the sounds of it Dr Sima Delangi - who Bianca72 mentions below but I understand you can't go to medcare by the sounds of it.... Maybe you put another thread on here or just call around and ask to speak to the obs/gyn before paying for wasted appointments where they will obviously insist on scanning and testing you at the same time!

Sorry to go on but I am still surprised that professional cleaners don't know to use hot water and clean cloths to clean. The agencies have a lot to answer for, they really could spare the maids for a couple of days training surely. I know that a lot of the maids are trained by following another maid for a day or two.. what good is that if the other maid can't clean. Anybody want to set up a maids training centre?

Exactly what am I doing now (diy) and the flat actually feels clean , which I didn't think was possible! Honestly it doesn't seem to make any difference what or how much I explain. I thought somebody out there somewhere must have a clean cleaner!

I agree Mushroom, but often telling them is not enough. I have also found that sometimes they work so slow (on purpose?!?!) that they don't have enough time to do the extra things I would like them to do. I don't think I am very demanding and I am always nice to them, but how many time do I need to keep telling them to not use pledge while cleaning the cooker, to use hot water, to not pull the plug on the alarm clock and internet but use the other free plugs, to use a stepladder if they can't reach etc etc etc. Maybe someone on EW should start an agency and train them. I'd be happy to let them use my house for training purposes ; ) Muurtje - sorry but your post really made laugh. Pledge by the oven - urgh! It's so true. I have tried everything, being nice, explaining, telling, tipping generously and I just can't seem to get somebody to clean remotely hygenically. The only one who ever did get clean properly stole all of my stuff!

Thanks fairycakemum. Muurtje it is a problem as they are not trained at all. It's not really their fault but things that we would see as common sense and no need to tell them (ie toilet brush for toilet only) they just don't seem to get. If a maid agency gave their maids basic training I'm sure they could make a lot more money!

Does anybody have an agency cleaner that can actually clean? I have tried many and my apartment always seems to feel dirtier after they have been, my feet are black and then I find out they have either been cleaning the bath with the toilet brush or the toilet with my sons sponge and it doesn't seem to make any difference how explicit my instructions are! I am 8 months pregnant and could really do with somebody good - any suggestions?

I am asking for a friend - aircon broken in lounge - cockroach infestation - power surges causing appliances to blow up - bathroom flooding - drain problem causing almighty 'pen and ink' ? Sounds like a normal apartment in Dubai to me....... and I'm not joking either..... That is sad though..... Agreed. I've heard there is a new law that means all tenants are legally allowed to give 3 months notice at any point of their contract. Not sure if this is correct or not though and personally I wouldn't want to risk trying to get money back from a landlord here or fighting for a deposit after leaving the tenancy agreement early.... but if your friend is very unhappy, it may be worth a look into and the risk.

two c-sections (3years ago and then 12 months ago) performed in Dubai by the same Doctor. Used the same scar which is barely visable now 3 inches long and very low. First C-section was and emergency and second on medical grounds. As others have said, recovery second time is much easier. Good Luck and try not to worry too much! Thanks Shella. Can I ask what Dr you used. My experience and recovery was great for the first, so it's good to hear so many women say it's even better with the second. Dr Christian Josza. He was at The American Hospital but has moved to Healthbay Clinic on Al Wasl. Delivers at City Hospital Now. I have stuck with him despite the move and 100% will have him for future pregnancy (if he is still in Dubai!!), which because of medical problems would have to be another c-section. Great thanks.

We went with younger kids - aged 3 and they loved it. There were older children there too. I think it's a great day, for children too. If they get bored you can always leave though. I'm not sure if different days are different timings but our match started at 2 so we got there about 1.30. You can park up on the field and bring whatever you like with you - umbrella's, picnic etc.

Thank you for your replies, it's really making me wonder now but I'm pleased I researched this now. Bianca72 and Agent Oso please could you tell me what obsterican you used and where. Mine was Dr. Sima Deghani, she is at Medwin Clinic (Jum 3) and uses Medcare hospital for births. Thank you Bianca72, did Dr Sima do both ops? How was your recovery? She did my 3rd c-section (I had the others in US and the Netherlands) and she cut away the scar during the operation. Recovery was quick and painless. Better than the other two. Not sure why though. Was up and 'running' after 3 days. Thank you so much for the info. Very helpful.

I'm due to have my second cesarean soon and I'm wondering if they cut into the old scar or make a new cut. I always presumed they cut the same scar but have since heard this may not be the case with some obstetricians. Has anybody experience of this in Dubai? edited by Mushroom on 16/03/2011
