I was referring to a few things. My main emphasis are on solidarity and sisterhood compassion. I'm sad that we aren't allowed to sympathize with Marte. Surely we can discuss it i a civilized manner? But no- fasting, iftars, recipes, clothing, nip&tuck and whatever crisis a member is having (and being ripped apart on here) are the favored subjects.

Would anyone be willing what royalty free websites they use for images? Thank you :) Why would people give their photographs away for free?

So sorry to hear that but it doesn't surprise me. Some women never grow out of the school days behavior. I've noticed it seems to be quite common here in Dubai . My husband is from another country too. I've seen some childish scheming behavior from people too old to behave like that. My advise? Look for new real friends. It's not easy I know.... PS. Don't you think some of those women read this forum? Will it make them realise or will they shut you out even further now?

There is an organic hairdresser in Jumeirah called The Organic Glow. I haven't tried them yet but thinking about it. The website looks pretty good. You could try to discuss your situation with them and check what their products contain. Perhaps they could test dye a small patch so that you can check if the product suits you.

Surely nobody borrows/steals somebody's used underwear. Revolting. Or will that be a new thread? "My maid stole my knickers and I don't know why as she would drown in them"

Maids with internet access??? Now *that* is going too far! Yes, how silly of me to assume that maids get such a privilege...

I really hope some of you (with maids, whom you treat like commodity, slaves etc.) have to at some point relocate back to Europe/US or wherever you came from. Labour and human rights laws there won't allow this sort of treatment of employees. Mind you, the salaries will be a lot higher too so perhaps employing domestic staff isn't an option. " lend her some of your undies too." This comment really wound me up. Ever thought of that maids can actually be literate and have internet access? How would you feel if people wrote on a public forum about you and your working conditions and belittling them?

Apologies about the confusion. I'm used to having to take various shortcuts due to lack of some ingredients in this part of the world so I was only trying to offer some help.

Not fair. She's a sportswoman- not a model. Didn't you see her happy-smiley face after she won? What has this world come to if everybody gets judged by their looks no matter what they do? I bet you that everybody has a "certain facial expression" at some point that might not appeal to everybody. I won't go into detail...

If you have a balcony that has some shade you might be able to grow watercress there (it's too hot in direct sun to grow most things). Another option is indoors. Dubai Garden Centre on SZR might have seeds and watercress seeds can actually grow on damp cotton wool in a dish indoors.

I would employ less staff. So many shops here have too much staff and a lot are not given proper training. How about spending more money on training staff or employing staff with the right experience/skills?

I have lived at the shoreline for several years, and never had to pay the 1000 you're talking about. From what I understand (from my LL), there is a certain charge that is covered by the LL, and then the we just pay the usage. Perhaps we have a very good LL, in that right at the beginning he mentioned that we would only be paying for what we use. He pays the rest. You need to check with your landlord. The other thing, we were told that Palm District Cooling does not transfer the accounts into tenants' name because of this charge that the LL's have to pay. Never quite understood the whole thing, but you could ask your LL, or even call PDC for info. Anyhow, we've only paid very little in PDC charges. Did you see the bills so you knew your usage? We had to transfer it to DH's name. The estate agent instructed us to do so. Also, it was switched off as nobody had live in the apartment and the estate agent insisted we have to pay the deposit and the re-connection fee but we visited Palm District cooling in person and they said that the landlord had to pay. It was a bit of back and forth but the landlord ended up having to pay it!

The around 1000 DHS quarterly charge stays the same and is obviously just paid quarterly. During the winter months the monthly bill can be as low as 30 DHS and gets rolled over to the next bill as the minimum payment is 50 DHS. And yes, you can pay online. Check their website palmutilities.com

Some guidelines- please don't assume that yours will be exactly the same: In regards to Palm District cooling: If barely no usage it's roughly around 30-50AED or so per month. I'm not sure how high the bills will become with more usage now when it's getting hotter. I guess a few hundred a month? What's expensive with them is a quarterly capacity charge which is around 1000 AED. Dewa for a two bed is around 1000 AED per month and that includes the housing fee (5% of your amount of your annual rent paid monthly) HTH

Perhaps plan a bit better next time? If you have an appointment and a meeting too close to each other there is a chance that something could go wrong (traffic etc...) Obviously a 45min wait is a bit of a pain but as none of us were there to witness the "incident" we don't know how the exchange went. I would hardly call it "repulsive" behavior. I'm not trying to shoot you down- just offering my opinion...

Would you define traditional and contemporary as the same thing? Would paintings of poppy fields be "acceptable" here seeing as the poppy flowers and poppy seeds are banned here?

I think you need to view in person to get an idea. It all depends on what you are after. I think Oceana and Tiara rents are rip-offs. The Movenpick hotel in Ibn Battuta arranges bus transport to Oceana pool & beach so I can imagine it can get a bit crowded. I can only comment on the 2 bed apartments as we viewed lots of them in JLT, Marina and Palm Jumeirah. For us the floor plan and size was important as well as the finish. Some good points to bare in mind: It's very easy to get a taxi from the Palm and the traffic is not as bad as in many other parts in Dubai. It's a bummer that there is no proper supermarket on the Palm but Marina and MoE or IBN Battuta are all just about a 10min away. Marina Residences have fixed white goods in the kitchens which is a big saver and you won't have the hassle to buy and own them. The Golden Mile has no gym/pool facilities but the Marina Residences has them (but no beach access). The Fairmont has in my opinion the best looking facilities as the beach and additional pools only opened recently and all is new and fresh. The apartments are also a very good size and the balconies are like an extra room if you have one facing the inner yard. (balconies on the Palm facing the road get a lot of noise from the traffic and there can be some "boy racers" on the weekends but not the extent that JBR get them) Shoreline apartments can be a bit run down but it depends on which block. I've heard of mould and leak issues in some of them. The square footage of the Palm apartments tend to be bigger than in Marina and the bathrooms have a bath and separate walk-in shower. The balconies are very large too so you get a good use out of them. I don't think the rents can be compared on the basis of how many bedrooms there are. You should check the square footage to get a good idea of the size. The park was mentioned on an earlier post and it's great for families as there are several kids parks within it. It's also great for walks/runs. We were checking online for a considerable amount of time before we moved here but it was really when we were here and physically saw the places that we could make a decision on where to live. You need to make sure that you're dealing with a good estate agent as well as good landlord that is paying the service charges. The issues last year got a fair amount of publicity so hopefully Nakheel won't get away with draining pools etc again.

Plenty of reasons on the below posts. Another one is poor building standards. I've heard and read about so many issues that current residents have. Mould, leaks, cracks on walls, stinky toilets etc. You might want to check out Palm Jumeirah Shoreline Apartments Owners and Residents on Facebook too...

I felt unconformable to be called "Sexy". I think the worse insults are probably said in their native language. I would prefer to have no chit-chat in any language. it seems that if you buy your beds from IKEA you are for ever more trapped into buying IKEA bedding as nothing else fits !! lol I brought some bedding from UK but the fitted sheets are too small for our IKEA mattresses... you need to measure to make sure... Ikea here uses the European measurements here. I have a European sized bed, UK pillows and an Ikea duvet cover which will have to be replaced as it limits me buying new covers and the pillow cases are too small. First world problems, eh...

I've found decent bed sheets hard to get here. And when you do find them they are expensive. Thing is the beds here can be funny sizes, so if you are bringing some, you need to plan for the size or just bring big flat sheets. The mattresses can be UK, European or US (all different...) The sheet issue is there if you have a thick mattress and want fitted sheets. Same with duvets and pillows too. All different sizes. The Ikea pillowcases that come with the duvet cover are too small for UK pillows.

You cannot get everything here...in 5 years I have yet to find dry roasted peanuts or simple eye make up remover. I struggle on without them :) I'll remember to pack lots of eye make up remover then! I think I can live without dry roasted peanuts! edited by LemonyLime on 04/05/2013 Perhaps Kelly means a specific brand of eye make up remover? I have had no problem finding it here. I use Clarins and at least Debenhams stock it. Sephora also has eye make up removers??

Isla- In case you didn't know- you should only use a reputable RERA registered agent if you go down that route. I found that there are some ads on Dublizzle listed by "agents" that aren't registered. Here's the link to check if they are RERA registered http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/English/Real_Estate_Licenses/EngBrokersList.aspx Here's also another useful link to use as guideline http://www.7daysindubai.com/Know-rights-Dubai-s-tenants-challenge-excessive/story-18059736-detail/story.html

I'm also fed up with sales assistants "attacking" you as soon as stepping into a shop. I just end up buying nothing as I can't concentrate on looking at things with one or more people breathing down your neck whilst you're browsing. And if I have any questions the shop assistants tend to be totally useless anyway. I don't understand why they don't more pride in their work and learn more about the products they are selling. If I'm not left alone I walk out quickly. Well, once I stormed off when DH and I were looking at phones and discussing pros and cons and three assistants kept on interrupting our conversion with pointless inputs. The final drop for me was when one of the started drumming impatiently on the shelf. Good to know about Victoria's secret. I won't bother then as I will not have a stranger barging into the cubicle when I'm half dressed/half naked.

I used to get them too but I find that eating bananas regularly has helped. I think it's due to the potassium levels in them.
