Unfortunately as far as I am aware there are no schools with an Australian Curriculum. My son attended Doha College (British) he adjusted fairly well when he continued yr 11 and 12 in Melbourne. Maybe finding a school which offers IB would be better as I see that IB is becoming more popular in Oz. Where are you from in Oz?

I think you need to first find a job for yourself before accepting your husbands offer. It is not easy to find a well paying professional job when you are in Doha. You will be considered as local hire and the pay will be much less than you earn now. Of course it will depend what your occupation is but as a general rule that is correct. Your pay cut may be much greater than the gain of 6K that your husband is getting.

Musherib is the old city center. Only a few years ago it was full of little Indian shops, tailors, hardware stores etc. It was recently cleared and a large development is being built there. So yes at the moment it is a huge building site, but should be nice in a few years. It is close to the Souq which my favorite place to visit in the evening in Doha, close to the Corniche and Museums. Everywhere you live in Doha you will need your own car or get taxis. There is no public transport to talk of and walking around in the heat is not an option. Apart from the fact it is a construction site at the moment, it is also quite far from the hospital.

LOL I could have written that post myself as I am in exactly the same situation, with exactly the same time lines. Yes, patience is a virtue.

Have you tried unaccompanied baggage? We used this when I left Doha for Australia and it worked really well. It does not necessarily come on the same flight as yourself but will arrive within a few days. It was not that expensive, we used emirates.

I am a midwife and I lived in Doha for 2 years (but that was 4 years ago). At that time it was almost impossible for a western nurse/midwife to get a good job in Doha. But things are changing, with Sidra opening and HMC employing more western nurses. As far as I know Qatar follows the American model. There is no midwifery registration as we know it, you register as a Nurse and then work as an obstetric nurse in labour ward or other departments. I do not think you will have the autonomy that you have in the UK. But things are changing and I believe there is a big demand for people like you. edited by nataliep on 11/06/2014 edited by nataliep on 17/06/2014

Hi Just wondering, at what stage you get offered a site visit? I have been offered a job but am still waiting for the agreement, so far there has not been any mention of a site visit. Is this only offered to certain grades or families with kids?

There is a Qatari Embassy in Canberra, do they not do degree authentication there? Or has this embassy recently opened since this thread started?

Are you talking about Sidra? It appears that the pay they offer will vary on your previous pay. After you interview and get offered a position, you will have a form to fill in and you have to detail the pay you are on in your current position and then you will receive an agreement that will detail your pay offer. Not straight forward but if you are a British nurse I imagine it will be a similar pay to what you are on and it will be tax free and of course you will have the other benefits that you mention.

Just wondering if anyone has had their wisdom teeth extracted under general anesthetic in hospital. My search came up with no results. Could anyone recommend a good oral surgeon and any idea of costs involved. Thanks

Ok so to recap, if your son is 2 yrs off university - in September he will be in yr 12 in Doha college (or British Curriculum ) and be doing the 2 yr A level course. For the IB system he will be in yr 11. Your husband should go and put his name down for, the American School, the International School of London and Qatar Academy for the IB.(probably in that order of preference in my opinion). He should be able to find a place. Just like to add that my son absolutely loved Doha socially and has made some fantastic friends which I hope he will keep for ever.

Hi Clarita we came to Doha with a 14yr old boy so i understand your worry about school. I suggest you find a school that teaches the International Baccalaurate, Qatar Academy offers this as well as the International School of London (although this only goes up to age 16 at the moment - not sure if they will increase the classes for older kids over the years) The American School was starting this too but not sure, anybody?? If you do not find a school that offers the IB you could try Doha College, good school academically but shocking facilities especially if you are used to private schools. They teach the British curriculum It is generally suggested you place your son in a class according to his age. The name of the grade varies depending what curriculum is taught. At 15/16 my son was in yr 11 and was doing the British GSCEs. So if you swap to the British system I suppose your son will be doing A levels by September, if this is the case you should be able to find a spot for him without too much trouble as not all kids do A levels and some go back to their country to finish off school.

Try Al Jazeera village exactly behind the american hospital off C ring road. Older spacious villas. We lived there til last year, close to the airport and not too far to ASD and Doha College. 10000 til last year, no idea if there are any vacancies or if the rent has gone up.

If you live in a compound, just go out to the security and tell them what you need, they will find someone with the right tools to fix things for you for a small fee. It always worked for me no matter what I needed done.

Hi Kelbucko and KS121. I also am in Ain Khalid Gate and looking to meet up with some people here, even if it is just for a chat around the pool or company to go to the gym (will not really get there on my own). I have an older son who does not hang around with me. Natalie edited by nataliep on 25/12/2011

Thinking of doing this for my son too who wants to go from Melb to London with a Doha stopover for a couple of weeks and yes it costs about the same as Melb - Doha. The part of the QA website where you can book a multiple stop does not work every time I tried it, but a quick phone call to the Melb QA office got me the answer in minutes. tel no. (melb) 86766400

There is a collection point at the food entrance of Villagio; if you are facing the entrance then its on the left side. We have dropped off clothes there and as far as I can remember it belongs to Qatar Charity. HTH Where exactly is this collection point? are they bins? I have looked but could not find anything. We are moving and I have clothes to donate. I also have Doha College Uniforms to donate that may be better used by someone on this forum. 5 shirts and 2 trousers, one almost brand new, will fit an average sized 14-15yr old boy. If interested email nataliepapaathotmaildotcom. Will post some stuff for sale in the classifieds.
