Thank you for all the information. I'm currently applying to do an MSc out of the UK. In the course information they list these programmes as their methods for delivering the key material. I just had a mini panic that I might have loads of IT issues, and not be able to focus on the course material. Although my IT manager at work has also just calmed my nervous and is helping me buy a new laptop for my studies!

Hi Egg, The last two times I've been to his shop he's had the sort of cages you are looking for. I got mine for 400aed (after bartering). My parrots now have loads of room, great perches, and can't pick the looks (they were good escapees from the last one). He also does some great prices if you buy toys in bulk. I stock up there every few months so I can replace the toys as the birds destroy them! Good luck finding it. It is in the EB section. If you go through the EB door from the car park, and take the first right immediately through the door I think it's down there on the right. I hope you find the perfect cage :)

There is a little shops that sells lots of items for Parrots; cages, toys, perches etc. It's in the EB section (can't remember the exact shop number). But its down one of the little side bits within EB. You might have to hunt a little bit, but should be worth it. He has some lovely cages. I got mine there.

I always use Enterprise when I am in the UK. I've taken a 4 week hire during a similar time slot for a very reasonable amount. I'm paying 400 pounds for a Class D, (price includes VAT and all extras). Their cars are always very good, and i'm often upgraded to the next available car.

I've been in this position. The company are still liable for the EOSB. You should contact the MOL as other posters have mentioned. If he is employed via a freezone who should also contact the freezone authorities who issue his visa. His visa can not be cancalled until the EOSB are paid in full.

I have a serious nut allergy and fly regulary. I can appreciate your concerns. Virgin now have a nut free meal on board. You can't order it on their website, however, email [email protected] if you book with them. If I fly Emirates I carry plenty of drugs, and speak to the Purser when I board. I don't eat any of their food, I binge eat before flying! FYI did you know Milk & Honey are stocking some nut free chocolate. Its an Australian brand, Sweet William. I checked them out thoroughly before trying it, and its great, a welcome change to the limited supply of Kinnnerton you get here. They even do nut free chocolate drops for cooking. www.sweetwilliam.com.au edited by nels on 14/05/2012

Trade Centre apartments are about 7k a month for a 1 bed, but they have up to 3 bed (don't know the price of them). They allow dogs. Some of the apartments are a bit dated. But it's a great location, and has a lovely pool and club house in them (serving alcohol). It also has a metro station right out side. http://www.dwtc.com/en/Tenants/Hotels+%26+Accommodation/Dubai+Trade+Centre+Hotel+Apartments

If you want a healthier take on buttercream. Instead of using buttercream in the icing, replace it with creamcheese. It gives a lovely very tasty result. In order to add decoration, you can still use a bit of fondant for the decorations, and cut out little butterflies and flowers. edited by nels on 14/05/2012

Yes these local charities should be able to assist, and the associations listed below can advise you on this. It's very few global charities that are registered here, and so the local charity bodies often provide assistance. It also helps on the credibility of the event as there is a clear trace on where the money is going. I'd pick up the phone to them and arrange a short meeting with them as they will be best placed to advise you. Good luck

I often oversee charity events as part of my job. You need to ensure the charity event is listed. There is a department dedicated to assiting with this http://www.iacad.gov.ae/EN/Pages/ListOfCharity.aspx If the charity you want to support doesn't have a local office here, you can still raise funds, but the proceeds have to be sent through one of the local listed charities. Also if you are running a raffle where the total value of all the prizes is more than 5000aed, the raffle has to be listed with the Dubai Economic Department. There is a branch office on the lower ground floor of Dubai Mall that will help you with this. This sounds like hard work, but its also a way that the government helps regulate that the money is actually going to a charity, and that the prizes go to real people. Good luck with your event, I hope it goes well. The paperwork might sound daunting, but i've always found the departments to be supportive, and i'm sure the charity will appreciate your support and the funds raised.

Monthly rentals are always more expensive as they have to include the DEWA, TV and internet etc Check on Dubizzle, using the short term option. One of the best companies around are PK Rent and also Better Homes, they both specialise in short term rentals. Thank you for the info. The dubizzle site was confusing me, but maybe i'll try again later. If it's more than 6k he just needs to know so he can make sure he budgets / plans the details in his contract. As he's only coming for a limited period taking a 12 month lease isn't going to work as by the time he gets his visa, bank account etc 2 months may have already passed.

I'm struggling with the websites, as some of the searches are throwing up serviced apartments in the hotels at 4k+ a week. I think he's more looking for something around 3-6k a month. He is still in talks with the company, but needs to find the market average so he knows he can cover his living costs. He wants to be near a Metro station as he won't have a car, so top choices are Tecom & Barshaa (behind MOE), although if he had to he'll look at JLT (he just knows JLT is a pain driving in and out if he's in a taxi and/or friends visiting).

There is a little garden centre behind Spinneys on Al Wasl road. They had some a few weeks back. Not sure if its too late now though, my plants are all in full bloom with about 40+ tomartos almost ready to turn. To find the garden centre take the first right after Spinneys and follow the road round the bend, it's just on the corner.

Are you looking for professional supplies, or just for fun? Just for fun... you can sometimes get diabolos, spinning plates and unweighted clubs from Carrefour, Park n Shop or Hamleys. For professional supplies, weighted clubs etc. I haven't found a supply here, but have ordered online years ago from www.oddballs.co.uk I used to shop their frequently when I lived in the UK. Most professional circus guys here ship in, as the local supply is more toys than pro equipment. For costumes, check out Mr Bens Costume closet. edited by nels on 05/03/2012

Do you live in a compound? I know of friends in compounds who have had similar issued. They've called the gate and the security have popped round to ask the people to turn it down. They were worried about approaching the neighbour direct, and for them this meant the neighbour didn't know exactly who had reported him.

Hi Jlove, I'm an adult with a PenNut Allergy and i've carried EpiPens in Dubai for years. Just have a copy of your local prescription handy in case you are stopped at the airport. The availability of EpiPens here flutuates all the time, sometimes you can get them, sometimes you can't. And then even if you can, you can luck out and only have 2 months on them. They also cost a fortune (500-700aed), with some insurances not covering them. My local doctor in the UK has alway been quite generous about letting me stock-pile epi-pens so I bring up to 4 in at a time. I've also recently started carrying AnaPens. They are new, but have a much longer use-by-date, so I find it better to carry them in the UAE. One thing to note carrying Epi/AnaPens in Dubai is the temperature. If you are off out to the desert or beach for prolonged periods of time, try to keep them inside a cooler box, as with temperatures here reaching 40+ it can affect the ability of the EpiPen to perform.

Also Arab Health is on this month with thousands of Pharma Companies exhibiting why not register to visit but also you could talk to Hostex who oversee some of the temporary staff requires for the event.

Nscm7859 i'm an adult with a nut allergy, and there are a few options to eat out. I find Jumeirah Owned Resturants to be very good. They label the menu's, and like other posters have said, I order through the manager. The staff there seem to be very understanding. I've also had good experiences at NoBu, MJs, Trader Vics and Hunters. Another good one is Bateaux Dubai, they have been great in the past. Just call them before to let me know. Brunches are a big no no. Can never get anything nut free.

Im looking for a 4E (preferably lake view). I've been doing the usual driving round the Springs, but not seeing many signs (I think Emaar were trying to ban 'to rent signs' at some point) If you get a good recommendation for realtors working in the Springs or come across a 4E Lake it would be great if you can share. And I'll let you know if I find a good agent / a 3E !

I've got my fingers crossed for her! Which course is she doing? I should be appearing from time to time on the Events Course. Just make sure she is prepared for hard work. It's not just the evening classes, but she should throw herself into the placements and it's the work experience that will be great for her CV. Like any internship, once she has the placement, she starts at the bottom up. And that part is all in the hands of the students mindset, not the teachers or the college.

I know a number of people that have been through EMDI and have employed some past students both on temp and long term basis. I also teach on occasions with them. The course is midrange, but does offer a more vocational approach for students that suit this style of teaching. For the past two years, a lot of students haven't graduated with jobs, however, this last year has been different. Nothing to do with a change in the course, but more the market here. Certainily success on each of the courses is down to the mind set of the student. They have to be prepared to study a number of nights a week, plus... most importantly take on as much work experience as possible. This is what gets the grad's employed post course. EMDI is great a lining up work experience places with top companies. These are often very low paid, but act as internships. Certainily the event management placements are good on great events, but students much be prepared for long hours and to prove themselves to get the best jobs. They might just be assisting with ticket collection... or could prove themselves and find themselves as a back stage runner on 50cent concert or similar.

Technically yes a freelance visa gives you the right to stay in the UAE, get a bank account etc etc. However, you have to submit a business plan and annual accounts. So you would need to have a small client base to turn over. They can work out to be expensive. It also depends what type of work you do. Freelance licences mostly exist in the media relm.

To MomofTwins... keep thinking positive. The events industry 'booms' through Ramadan as we all prepare for the new season. The industry is not full of Phillapinos. There are many positions for talented expats from all parts of the world. The top end events & communication agencies see the value in paying for these skill sets. Let us know how you get on. You never know, we could end up on the same projects. Keep smiling, make sure you've got a 'kick ****' portfolio. And work will come your way. edited by nels on 30/07/2011

The events industry has been need's for 3D and CAD skills. Try looking for contacts on Linkedin for some of the following companies & contacting them direct. Whilst not many events run in Ramadan, it's proposal season and we're all busy... business is picking up. These companies tend not to use Recruitment Agencies, but the direct approach. - Action Impact - Salt & Pepper - CSI (Part of Emirates Group) - Eclipse - TGP (Top Gear Promotions) - TME (The Main Event Company. May have contract work in the run up to Mother & Baby Show) - IIR (Although they have one CAD specialist inhouse, not sure they need 2) - Projex - Eastern Exhibitions (Had a few people leave recently) - Also try Dubai World Trade Centre HR Department, they have an inhouse team for CAD & 3D Rendering Also if you are 'very good' contact EMDI a training institute in Knowledge Village as they often look for part time trainers in this field. If your on your Husbands Visa it's perfectly legal for you to contract at EMDI or any of these companies on a short term basis. They will just issue a temporary labor card. Good Luck.

ECO - i'm not sure what type of girl your friend is... but if she wants to look for some casual work here doing 'promotions, hosting, helping at events', that kind of thing. It can pay up to 100aed per hour, and is flexible hours. She would need some nice photos, but you and her could play 'dress up' and take these, you wouldn't need a pro. You kind of need to be a make-up/girly girl to do this kind of work. Agencies to contact include: - Hostex Dubai - Diva Dubai - Bareface - Fame I'm sure there are a few more, just can't remember them now. I hope the chat with your friend goes well. I'm not sure which country your friend is from. But also running home to no work, with no money would be quiet tough too. I hope it goes well. Just a word of warning, it was in the Gulf News a few weeks ago that an event at the Trade Centre was raided at the end and all staff working there without labour cards etc were caught............ If you read my previous post - I state she would need an NOC from her existing employer to make it legal! If you have the link to Gulf News I would be interested to read it. I happen to be very close to the Trade Centre and this is the first i've heard of trouble. Thanks

We're one big family :) he he perhaps you should sign up for your DM once you're settled. You would certainly meet people and make friends. Plus would probably never pay to dive again, as you'll be able to 'help out' in return for dives :)
