As the Dangerous Blonde has put below, this sector is really dominated by Arabic speakers as most campaigns are run in dual languages. Also lots of jobs in this area are filled by networking and not traditional approaches. Have you managed to get out networking in this sector? It might not be ideal, but for now you could contact the key publications & PR companies and offer freelance editing/writing. Its not what you want to do long term, but would get your name out there, and from there you can build your connections. If you are not in contact with JIVARO recruitment agency, then you should be. They are small, but specialize in this sector. http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=11724668&snapshotID=&authType=name&authToken=G08W&ref=NUS&goback=%2Enmp_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1&trk=NUS-body-member-name

There is often part time work available in Events. However this is part time, in that it might be a short term contract for a few days and/or one week here and there, but not part time five days a week but only from 9-3 on those days. www.showforce.com www.hostexworld.com Hostex is more known for 'promotions' type work, but if you have event planning experience they have some quite hands on roles. Hostex mostly specialise is business conferences and exhibitions, not the 'stand and look pretty' type of hostess work. Please note - you need to have your own visa to work with these companies, they will not provide sponsorship.

I used to ride a unicycle, but haven't for many years. There is not really much an instructor can teach other than the basics such as getting on, and getting off. After that its down to practice, patience and body balance. I would also recommend buying shin pads! When you are learning it is very easy to spin the peddles and whack your calf bone. I was covered in bruises for weeks. For the basics, there are some quite good YouTube videos. You just need your Unicycle, shin pads, and then a long length of wall (with a smooth floor)... this is so you can gently touch the wall for occasional support whilst you learn the basics. Dubai is actually a great place, because learning on flat marble floors is easier than carpet (until you fall off!) Good luck! I know it doesn't help with present shopping, but really there is very little other than basics that an instructor can teach.

Thanks for all the info. wow, 6 months expiry is not good, they are so expensive. I guess you need a prescription from a UK doctor to get them in the UK? Yes I see a GP in the UK once a year and she gives me a 12 month repeat to draw 2 pens at a time. I'm a UK citizen and still pay NI so I can do this thankfully. I have a stock pile of 3 pens at the moment, and then will be back at Christmas and will no doubt stock up again. Last night was my first incident in 5 years, usually I'm so careful.

I carried Ana pens for a bit last year, but I didn't find them that durable. On one I could gently shake it and hear the spring moving on the inside, it wasn't very comforting so I swapped back to EpiPens. Dubai is still clearing back stock of the old style pens. The new one has a new release mechanism, longer shelf life and the best sturdy container. No more popping tops off and/cracked plastic tubes. I can imagine being a new epi pen mum is a bit scary. I'm in the UK at the moment but when I'm back I'm sure there is lots of advice on silly things we can all offer you. Thankfully I was in the UK last night when I had my incident and was only a few minutes away from the John Radcliffe in Oxford. I don't suppose anyone knows Emirates policy on flying after anaphylaxis? I know Virgins is 8 days.

Hi Tattie, American Hospital wont accept a prescription from Emirates Hospital. Last time I went, they made me pay to see 'their' doctor, to get 'their prescription'. My insurance isn't covered there, so had to pay out in cash, then got to the pharmacy, where they claimed to only have one pen in stock, and it only had 3 months left on it. Since then, i've been fortunate enough to keep being able to bring them in from the UK, where I have been able to get the new style Epi-Pen. They are so much more durable in the new casing. If you haven't converted to these yet, I'd strongly recommend it. I currently have 3 adult ones, that expire between 06/14 and 10/14. I even tested one out last night... after sadly eating something, so today i'm pumped up on my steroids :( Here's a link to the new pens. There is also a helpful training video for family, friends and schools to watch as the pen activation is slightly different. http://www.epipen.com/How-to-Use-EpiPen <em>edited by nels on 10/09/2013</em>

Cheeky, a good route back into work, may be through temp work. The events industry is always looking for people with 'people skills', and coming from a HR background i'm guessing you've got that. The work wouldn't be full time, but there are agencies such as www.hostexworld.com that look for the more mature lady (rather than part time model) to assist with temp work at business events, exhibitions and conferences. The work is usually for 3-7 days in a row, and can include helping process delegate registrations, assisting in the conference rooms, meeting and greeting speakers etc. The roles pays ok, and Hostex really look after their staff. The new events season is kicking off and I know agencies such as Hostex will be looking for lots of staff for up coming events. They are strict on visas though, so you need to have a residence visa and NOC from DH to legally work in this capacity. The work wouldn't be permanent, but would give you some local and more recent experience.

Hello. I've had to do this for a lost ear-ring. It was over a year ago now, so the process might have changed, but this is what I had to do. (Took about 2 hours in total). 1. Go to Bur Dhabi Police station (just off Trade Centre Roundabout) 2. Go to the general reception and tell them you need a certificate for a lost item. They will give you a form to complete in Arabic. 3. Take the form to the typing centre (Just off the car park of the poice station) This cost about 40aed (from memory) 4. Take form back to the reception desk at the Police Station, they will check the details and they will give you a ticket number. 5. Go into main area of police station and sit and wait for your number to come up. (I waited about 45 mins). 6. When number is called go to counter with your form, and they issue the NOC. It cost about 120 aed I think. I can't remember if it was at the main counter, or at the reception, but I had to prove I owned the item. I had photos of me wearing the earings, plus the receipt from DH. Good Luck!

Thank you Asti and Tattie Bogle! Government employees often take a bit of a bashing on Expatwoman, and I think people generally forget about the army of worker that keep the city safe and running 24/7... we might not always get it right... but we do what we do with passion, work hard and are very dedicated. It's not all 7-3 and 6 day Eid weekends. :)

Not all government employees work less... I work for the Government and I work a lot more hours that my DH! Police, Fire Services, Civil Defence, Airport Security, hospitals (gov ones)... they are all Government employees. When you're planning your Eid break, the airport doesn't close, the police don't stop patrolling, and civil defense are still on duty. Look at last Eid and the flood in the Gardens. DEWA, the police and civil defense all worked through the night, and all are Government employees. There are many passionate Government employees that work to keep the city running, safe, and provide a secure and enjoyable environment in which you live whether its a normal working day, the middle of the night, or an Eid holiday. <em>edited by nels on 23/08/2013</em>

I'll be keen to hear recommendations too. Our guys haven't turned up in 10 days (mostly due to Eid), but with this random dusty weather the pool is looking less than appealing at the moment. I need to check with DH who we're currently using, he deals with them mostly. Whoever they are, we've used them for two years, but I've seen quite a drop in quality/service in the last few months.

I think you might be looking at this from the wrong angle. I appreciate you say you can't afford the increase, but just because you can't afford it, it doesn't mean the company shouldn't apply it. After all they are also a business. Like others have said 5% increase is acceptable. You may be better to try and afford the 10k increase, as the opportunity costs for moving are so much more; new deposits, agency fees, removal trucks etc. Plus the key factor would be for me 'time is money', and a lot of time can be spent in finding a new place. On top of that additional time cancelling DEWA, Etislalat etc, and then getting all the new services set up, and more deposits for those companies. Given all that 190k for a 5 bed villa seems like a bargain to me! In fact if you do move out, let me know, I might move in. I pay 100k for a small 2 bed. <em>edited by nels on 05/08/2013</em>

I have both a mini cooper and a 4x4. I wouldn't say one's any safer than the other. I've seen plenty of 4x4s over the years on their side and on roof's where drivers just don't know how to handle them. The mini has such a nice acceleration on it (i drive a manual mini), that i find if there are idiots around I can bit a little nippy change lanes and get out of their way. I can't do that kind of inner-city driving in my 4x4. The other amazing benefit of a mini that hasn't been mentioned here is the parking! My little cooper nips into any space in any mall. :) I don't service my mini with AGMC, I use a private garage. Unless a mini is hit by a 4x4. I doubt there would be much damage if it were the other way around I don't drive a 4x4 but can understand why people feel safer in them. I think also it's often good to think not just about cars crashing into cars. I've had children run out in front of my car plenty of times here and had to slam on the breaks. If you were to hit a person in your 4x4 you are likely to do a lot of damage with the weight of the vehicle. A little mini stops in no time, and the damage would be lessened. Like I say, I have both a 4x4 and a mini, i drive them equally as much, and I know I can stop very quick in the mini, but the 4x4 is more heavy. But then there are other advantages to the 4x4... not just safety; boot space is much better, you def can't hit Ikea in the mini! OK i've answered your question... get both! 4x4 for the big busy journeys and desert adventures... and the mini for the fun beach days and shopping! (Thats what I do) <em>edited by nels on 05/08/2013</em>

What are you looking at studying? You may find their are other options and not just Open Uni. I study an MSc part time via distance learning out of Leeds Met. They have an online portal where you watch all lectures (they are pre-recorded so you watch when suits your schedule), and you take part online in weekly activities and discussions with other students. The library is also all online so you can search for academic papers and then even print out all reading material from here. They also have an ipad app so I can download the material to my ipad and still read it, highlight it and make sticky notes. Whilst I'm at Leeds Met as they are the best for my subject, there are other UK uni's that now offer this approach and not just Open Uni. You may find that by going via a Uni that is an expert in your field the degree may carry more value in the market place than Open Uni. (That's not to devalue degrees from Open, but I know for example my Uni is top of the field for my area of study and so would be considered better value than Open Uni in the market place).

As others have said below, its good to get a second opinion, but also maybe start to prepare in case it does come back the same. I have an allergy to nuts, and its not just her immediate food at home you need to consider. Even as an adult I can be a bit of a social outcast as people never want to cook for me! Milk and Honey is a great place to start in Dubai. There is one on the Palm and one in the Springs, you can get some every day foods that will be gluten, egg, diary free. This includes chocolate, biscuits, breakfast cereal etc. You're normal every day stables! (They are a bit more expensive... but worth it) There are also some great US websites run by mum's with ideas and recipes. Start googling and take a look. In terms of a social life, be prepared to make mini pack lunches for children's birthday parties. You can also send her along with a 'free-from' cake, so when the other children are eating cake, she'll also have her special cake. Talk to her school and see if they offer 'free-from' meals so that she can still eat lunches at school, or is she already used to taking pack-lunches? Also, look at your airline tickets, and any hotel stays you have coming up. Look to brief them and request special meals. I also travel with food. Before each trip I stock up on some basic non-perishables which I pack in my hold-luggage. Over the years I've offered many people advice that have been put on some strict diets. The biggest thing is not to focus on the 'cant eats', but focus on the 'cans'. Start making a note book of all her fun, favourite foods that she can eat... it's a more positive way to look at it.

I struggled with my first attempt at pushing the base out and found the trick was to spray a little baking spray just about the seal rim, once the seal comes in contact with the grease it comes out a lot easier. I only do this when oven gloves are on as it's still piping hot out the over, pushing the pan down on a tin of food so never cut myself to date. It's a true favourite in my kitchen! absolutely love them. I also think the idea was originally done by Wilkinson, but Lakeland have rights to brand them under their name or so I gather from their website. DesertRose1958, wow thanks for the offer. 13, 18, 25 and 30 inch. Square shape and they must be the aluminium range that are about 7cm deep. Wow! i hope you manage to get there there! Now I wish I had oven gloves on, but it was a baked cheesecake and had been chilling for sometime! Maybe I need to give it another go...

Yes lakeland developed these themselves and are the only stockists. I brought one a few days back, but I must say I'm not impressed. It's quite tricky to release the bottom, I followed the instructions and pictures, but still sliced open my finger, getting blood all over the cake! :( I much prefer my spring fold pans.

I love my cloud nines! I have very very very curly hair, and hated GHDs, I always felt that my hair was burnt and lank. I never have that with the cloud nines. Its like its effortless to straighten my hair, and my hair doesn't feel like its burnt or too hot. I can straighten it and it still feels glossy and fresh. People also really compliment me on it, and that never used to happen with the GHDs. I'm a real brand ambassador for the C9s, I could never switch back to GHDs.

Yup, we're directly under the flight path in Springs 7 - they've been driving me up the wall every afternoon for 4 or so days now! Wonder if it's something to do with Idex? I've seen mostly military choppers, plus the bright yellow rescue one today ... IDEX is in Abu Dhabi, so I can't see how it's linked. It's so annoying. Has it been happening everyday? If you have customer service experience I would recommend contacting the company below. http://hostexworld.com/index.html#/home/ They provide temporary event staff. These aren't always glamour models, but mature adults that can assist as registration staff or meet & greet for the many business events that take place across Dubai. Its never permenant work, it would be for 4 days here, or 6 days there. I have friends that work with them and they find it suits them very well. It is mostly expat wifes that they employ, and as long as you are on your husbands visa and he provides NOC it is ok.

Most golf courses will have this policy. It's not only for H&S, but also to ensure the golfers keep the pace of play and are not side-tracked socialising. However, why not be a bit naughty, and look to book one of the courses out of the Entertainer book, so you pay for hubby, and you go free. Tell them you 'share clubs', and your handicap is 38. (most courses allow a handicap upto 40 for women). Then... just don't hit any balls, and play caddy for your husband. Or... let him play the full hole, and for fun, you can 'drop a ball' on the green and try and few putts on each hole. You never know you might pick up the bug :) I play golf with my DH and love it. Or instead of booking him 18 holes look at booking him a workshop with one of the Club PGA Pro's, if he plays a bit he may enjoy it. You can book what they call Course management or Playing lessons, where the Club PGA Pro will take your DH out for a few holes on the course and coach him to assist in a better game. <em>edited by nels on 04/11/2012</em>

Harvest Home have some lovely cake stands. They also do some very cost effective pretty ones made out of shiny hard cardboard that can be flat packed. (I know I don't sell it well, but they are quiet pretty when you actually see them). Harvest Home is on one of the malls on beach road. I can't remember the name of the Mall, but its the one next to Spinneys/Lime Tree.

There just doesn't seem to be a 2nd hand market for women's clubs here, I've had the same problem previously. In the end I ordered them from the US and had them shipped with UPS, I got a fantastic deal on a great set of clubs. In total my full set of clubs from the US with bag cost 3000aed, in Golf House, a half set of the same clubs sells for 5400aed. Are you an experienced player? DuPlays offer some great group lessons, and a 3par league. As part of signing up for the lessons you get free club usage. (even if you pop up to practice). Although i'm not sure if the same club loan scheme operates for the 3par league but might be worth you checking out! DuPlays courses and league runs from Emirates Hills.

My DH and I honeymooned in Kenya. We stayed at two very different camps. The first was in Amboseli, the camp was run entirely by Masi Mara, it is an eco camp. All the drivers, cooks etc were Masi, and we had a great afternoon in their village where it was only us and 1 other couple. The camp is very small, only 6 tents in total. Amboseli isn't great for lions, but full of Hippos, Elephants and Griaffes. We stayed here for 3 days, and then flew up to another camp in the Masi Mara right on the river. The 2nd camp was 5*, butler service the works. But again we had a Masi driver, and spent an afternoon in his village. The driver was amazing, we had him all to ourselves, and he told us great stories of growing up a Masi, lots of information about the animals, tracking... everything... The first camp: http://www.porini.com/pdf/amboseli-porini-camp.pdf The second camp had three sites, we stayed at Bateluer: http://www.kichwatembo.com/

HoF ship to the UAE. I was looking into last year as I was gifted an Arthur Price cutlery set as a wedding present and was looking at having it shipped over.

I brought new pans last year, and also nearly fainted when I saw some of the price tags. I ended up at Waitrose Dubai Mall and got a great set of John Lewis pans. (as previous poster has suggested, they are worth checking out, nice pots, at nice prices!)

You should look up EMDI (Institute of Marketing & Communications). They offer a City & Guilds dipolma in Event Management. It is a part time course over 1 year, with students having lots of opportunity for organised internships on large events, often earning money at the same time. Many of the students enter into fulltime work from the course. Most of the studying is very practical, and/or group work. Not long technical essays! <em>edited by nels on 23/08/2012</em>
