I wonder if add agencies are in control of ad's they create or if just puppets for the companies? Cant look good on your CV if you are "creative director" for the Canadian school/freshday panty liner here.... I also hate the promises they make here on health/beauty products. There is the weight loss pill one, if it was real and worked all counties would be selling it, but they are not-wonder why. I guess some people here take what they hear as the truth..

Just FYI, I wrote to DVLA a while ago regarding this and this was the reply I received. I can confirm that a British licence only becomes invalid when the expiry date has passed. As you presently reside overseas for the greater part of the time, I regret that we are unable to issue you with a further British licence. Changes to British legislation resulting in the implementation of the Second EC Directive on Driving Licences (91/439/EEC) since 1 January 1997, have required that driving licences are granted only to drivers who are resident in this country.

Voice of little girl crying "when is daddy coming home?" VoiceOver says something along the lines of too many daddies are dying young, come and get a heath screen with us as dying too young is optional and you don't need to leave your family,,, I am curious to know what health screening can really detect? The way adverts are run here it sounds like they can detect it all. If this is then why doesn't every country offer these services so less people will get sick and will save money on health care.. I find advertising here shocking. That awful woman who is getting a new car for the price of a dinner out and promises hubby she won't ask for a 3rd night out ths month. Go away!! Or the lack of lambs in nz cos they are all on the shelves in spinneys!!

Same as Daza but ours also has a 2 ring gas hob outside (covered) and full use of BBQ. She is welcome to use our kitchen but prefers the set up she has. You can buy tables suitable for cooking hobs to go on.

What about happy with life here? Have a job, a home and a life they enjoy? Not everyone is here for the reasons below. Some people love it and could possibly move elsewhere but chose not to. We don't save much but DH has a decent job he is mostly happy in, some great friends, like the outdoor life and get the opportunity to go home each summer. Close proximity to everything is something I love. If back in the UK we would still be paying mortgage and possibly school fees. High petrol/public transport costs and DH would prob have a minimum of 1 hour commute to work. Cost of living in home countries/cities is potentially also high..

Don't we need to alter a couple of the messages below... There was almost a corniche all the way from Dubai Marine to Burj but come Sunday it will stop at Open Beach and another new development is going in... Beaches are nicer but there are now less of them that are accessible. There are LOADS of new schools opened/opening. There are lots of new mini malls going in being built along beach road. Original Lime tree at Ibn has closed and Carluccios is coming or is open.

The hoardings start from left of the car park area (if you are facing the beach) and go a fair way towards the fishing village, basically where there is some kind of wall out in the sea and the inlet bit is, that is as far as it goes. Not a great explanation but hope it makes sense... sad sad sad Think a new hotel and leisure area!! Then on top of that is the new Jumeirah Beach Club resort opposite mercato that is going up. There will be no public beaches at all before too long.

Tattie, it looks like you will reconnect with old szr before the barriers and under flyover you will be back on szr. From the picture you won't be able to get down to safa lights from szr, it looks like its blocked. Only people coming from al khail area can head to safa lights. So to get to wasl exit will be at um al sheif which is a minor junction and will be gridlocked.. Ever hopeful it's not as bad as we are all expecting... :-(

Hearbreaking. You see all sorts on the running path there, walking and running and chatting. I agree about all the beaches going. Also noticed parking metres going up so everywhere will be paid parking. I saw the boards going up last week and assumed it was an extension to the car park..alas no. what I find hard is that they promised us a 14k promenade and then boom, they have taken loads of it away. ;-(

Sue do you mean the beach next to marine beach resort is going? There is a small cycle path there too? I thought the new corniche was going to run from the flagpole to burj... It's all so confusing and so sad.. Noticed a lot of work going on at various points along the beach. Adding sand and protecting the beach. Is this all the palm/new islands that are causing more beach erosion?

Think I saw it in Harvey Nics but it was v expensive. I use Decleor and buy at home and have had it shipped here by SalonSkincare website. They often have sales/discount. I think technically liquids are not meant to be shipped, I had no idea when I ordered and the items made it here OK..

Kings are not the only school to take money at registration. Many schools do it regardless of wait list size. Some even ask for money for assessment.

Isn't being stateless the same for UK passports now? I might be wrong but... If I had my kids in the UAE and their partner was not born in UK but they both have UK passports then they had their kids in Singapore (for example) then isn't there an issue with automatic right to a UK passport for their kids? OK, I added this at the same time as TB.. edited by nicedaynat on 13/09/2014

I use large plastic planters I picked up in ace (no hole in bottom). Put a small layer of soil in, add bokashi waste and then a layer of soil. Once that planter is full (at 1st its full but as the waste breaks down it gets lower) I then have a 2nd planter and fill that and then use the 1st planters soil all over the garden. Takes about 4 months to get a full planter of soil. The garden seems to love the soil I make. My bin does smell and I keep it in the utility room. Not so good as using the liquid as that makes the garden smell!! But it does help in the garden.

The lower price is for residents of emirates hills (springs, meadows, lakes etc) you need to prove out live in one of these communities. Imagine the highest price is for a non community family. If you call them they will explain the pricing policy.

Just listening to Teresa may on news.. She is saying overseas passports for overseas people wishing ttravel to the uk will be extended for 12months .. Children can be issued with ETD but the parents must be able to prove they are the parents to get this docs.. Atho not sure what that means for residency visa.. It's live now in the commons but my guess it will be replayed again-every 15 mins!! Not sure what you need to do to find out what is happening to yours. Perhaps the embassy here with have some guidance later today from the UK.. A sorry situation..

I was born in the UK to British parents. I am a UK passport holder, lived in the UK for over 40 years, paid and still pay UK income tax and national insurance and I expect be treated in the same way as a UK resident when it comes to renewing the document that allows me to travel. I don't expect to get special treatment but expect the same and a 12 week wait for a passport in my eyes is not acceptable, They should have planned for the summer as I did. I travelled in Feb and sent off renewal soon after returning. Praying it is back for summer travel.

Agree with Mushy. In my home country there is so much more on offer after school for kids be it at school or the option of a childminder who picks up as well. Which if legal here would prob help so many mums, ones that work and ones that want to earn some extra $'s. Then the advantage of (probably) living very close to school so most friends are within walking distance etc. School hours are also very different so no 7-30 start for school with a 9am start for work. I never even had a cleaner back in my home country.. prob wont if I go back. My house is also much smaller and less dusty than here.

I can't help with your questions but there is a job for DT teacher at JESS a very well respected school here in Dubai http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/jobsdetail.aspx?pid=11848&cid=jobs&jbid=5626 You can maybe contact them directly and ask?

Sk that is a bit harsh and a bit smug. Not everyone has the luxury of travelling back and be able to renew in 4 hours. The system seems very slow now, the website quotes 3 weeks, they should update this to make people aware. People have had to cancel holidays who applied for passports in February. I don't think that is "last minute".

HI, Take a look at the expat woman toddler meet ups. They are at IBN Battuta Mall-on a metro-2 hours play and a coffee. Really great to meet mums etc. Think they do one at Wafi as well. http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_families_mums_groups_8090.aspx Then there is a meet up at Petit Palais in Dubai Mall with another group quite often, again 2 hours plus coffee. You will soon meet a few likeminded people and kiddies. I did..

Vera.. I know you are Italy bound. I bought some lovely prada shoes in a sale in Italy and DH some Tods in the sale. We then claimed tax back at the airport on departure. Made the shoes 1/2 the cost of here and I know they will last years. I also saw, altho never visited, an outlet mall just outside Florence on the main road to Bologna (I think). I am sure I read in the tourist guide it has all the big brands at discounted prices. Google outlet mall Florence and am sure it will be there. Italy is great for shoes and handbags! ;-)

Think I read that not all food outlets are included in the free hours. Check at the parking info stand. Also, you might need correct money when paying. If parking is 40 and you only have 100 you might end up with a credit note. Not sure if this is all the time or just when cash in machines is limited.

Hi, if it was me I would go at start if the hols, early July. Many Italians take hols in Aug so some places will be super quiet and many restaurants closed (Owners on hols) and beach areas packed. Weather will be warm/hot but manageable. Also in some places peak season for prices will start mid July, others will be all of July. Most of european school hols also start end July so generally everywhere is busier late July and August. Jealous.. enjoy! ;-)

Take a look at AGRITOURISMO.net Old farmhouses converted to accommodation. You would need a car but some are amazing. often they have pools so you can relax and sightsee. You can fly into PISA and out of Florence or Rome etc. Trains are very good. Lucca is lovely, as is areas around Cortona, Montepulciano, Siena..Lake Trasemino. Fab pizza, pasta and gelato.. and grape.. I want to go to Italy! NB Prersonally I would avoid Rome in summer, its v hot and super busy. Am sure its busy all year round but summer seems mega busy.

Did you try ARENCO or AL Wasl properties? Take a drive around the areas and see if there are compounds with night-watchmen/maintenance people and they may help (thats how we found ours). I think I saw a let sign on the villas opp the Emirates Int school on al Thanya a week or so ago. Drive about looking for to let signs which you often find in Um Suq areas.
