Someone in DH co (in the USA) went on hols and came back after a desk move and his lamp was missing. Sent an e mail to someone who he thought was factilities asking do you know where my lamp has gone. Alas he sent it to the company CEO (company of 17000 staff). CEO replied "Are you serious" to which he replied "Yes I went on vacation and my lamp is no longer on my desk". CEO replies well then I will get someone to investigate it... He fwds to head of facilities globally and asks him to assist in the search for the lamp. At this point poor originator realises his error. The e mail was fwd by CEO to his direct reports with a ;-) and it was then sent down the food chain to the whole company via diff people. A facebook page was created called :"Where is my lamp" and many people found pics of crazy lamps and posted them asking if this was it!!

I am from a world of 3 TV channels! When people borrowed our home phone they would pop 2p in the money box next to the phone to pay for their call! 5 pence worth of 1/2 pence sweets.. after swim class... brill, made swimming worthwhile cos the pool was always freezing.

It is hard.. you get a payslip and there is the left and then the right side!! Then bonuses.. that is horrid when you see what you actually get. Def will be an adventure and one I hope you will love. Working in C Wharf? Its a great place to work, has a buzz about it. Great shops, bars and places to eat.. Couple of great gyms too!

Ha ha.. The tax is not 40% on all earnings, only above a certain amount. Been away a while and can't actually remember what the basic rate of tax is on the lower earnings! Maybe 27% or similar. As for tax on personal savings.. yes on interest earned, but as interest rate is about 0% there are no earnings to pay tax on. Taxes go towards many things.. education, NHS, police, fire etc and armed forces to name but a few. But yes its high and you often wonder what you get for the tax you pay.. London is a great place to live though!!

Our old maid made 400 dhs worth of calls from our landline when we were out or away. All to the same number, and often at 7pm time when we were on holiday... Couldn't then understand why we didn't give her a bye bye bonus...

Yes I have a been a few times. Never from Rome tho (Pisa and Rimini airports Florence is another option) altho Rome to Perugia on Tuscan border is 2 hours by car. Rimini is a beach resort. Hire a car and buy a map of Tuscany-or look on line. Decide where you want to visit and then try and find accom based on distance. We have only ever done self catering using agriturismo dot net These are farmhouses where owners have converted them to accom in various sizes. Often not walkable to a town but many have W*ne and Olive Oil tasting and some restaurants. Tuscany has some amazing small villages/towns that you can just wander and of course food.. yummy. Places like Cortona and Montepulciano are 2 lovely towns. From Rome you can see Perugia/Assisi (not in Tuscany) and if you stay in Tuscany Florence and siena as well. HTH! NB A lonely planet guide will also help lots.. There are some nice beaches near Pisa altho in my opinion the Pisa/Lucca area of Tuscany is not as pretty as the Siena/Arezzo area.. edited by nicedaynat on 18/03/2012

Lavazza is good I agree. They moved from near Mazaya to the AWR (?) building on service road by Al Manara. You can see it from SZ Road. Think they do all size machines. 800 LAVAZZA is number I think.

There are 2 resorts, the one in Liwa desert, called Qasr al Sarab. That one is in the middle of the desert and about 3 hours from Dubai on the LOOONG road! Then there is the one on the Island, Desert Island resort on Sir Bani Yas Island. That one you drive to the coast then boat over I think or sea plane.

Great for risottos and the like i think and does it all for you-chop cook etc.. Not cheap from memory of her telling me. Not that much help really sorry!! Would def go with the Big Bus tour, they have the hop on hop off option and u may be able to get a ticket for 2 days. That way you can use it as your transport. It will def drop off by the Rain Forest cafe as its a stones throw from Piccadilly circus so early food then hop back on. Hotel maybe opt for one near to Victoria, then if u check out you can leave luggage there and then pick it up and jump on Gatwick Express train. Think that takes 30 mins or so and would run every 15 mins. Victoria is on district line tube same as S Ken for Museums. You would need to plan in advance what you want to see and look at museum map as they are vast. You could lose a day in each. Altho Big bus must go to Knightsbridhe so you can jump off there too and walk...Warning tho its Olympics so if July/Aug it will all be busy. Be warned there is the 3 hour time diff so you may be worn out on arrival-assuming you are arriving from here-so 7pm is 10pm Dub time and then next day you will be up early..

SZ Road Dubai bound and off at Hessa Street towards Al Khail Road. At the junction that goes under the over pass (currently a r'bout but lights now flashing so any day now It will be a traffic light junction) take a left. (new saudi german hosp on opp corner) Thru a few traffic lights and at Emirates NBD bank right, entrance to park is right into sand/gravel. To taxi back prob need to walk back to NBD and flag one as park has no "road" in front of it.

Re Grey areas and drinking.. How are people able to buy alcohol and drink it at somewhere like Caramel/Le Petit Maison DIFC or Golf Clubs with no hotel attached. Alcohol licence doesn't allow it for residents and tourists are not staying there so how do they get a licence to buy and sell it?

I did a parenting course here in Dubai and there are some great ideas/tricks I learnt... I could add the website of the lady who runs them but would prob get deleted?? Google Sarah Capon I think you will find her site. One thing she taught was to offer choices/consequences-even at a young age-altho you have to be prep'd to follow thru with your choice. So if you carry on doing that I you will go to bed, if you stop we can play with your xxx... You can either eat dinner nicely and have a treat/desert or not eat and there is no more food until next meal. Tantrums are all about attention. Ignore unless he might harm himself. Kids eh!!!

Sun, Mon & Tues 9-30 to 11-30. If you drive through JA Village past school and hospital and turn right at the horse riding stables. Keep going until you see a few "churches" on the right. Its the 1st one, you will see cars outside. Go in thru main door, left of stairs and then the entrance to group is on the left. Took my LO there from about 10 months he liked it.

Have you had pest control in at all lately? We had a vile smell after PC and it was dead ants etc that had got caught in window areas. I walked round for days trying to find the smell and it was the windows. At the bottom were tiny holes and in there dead creepies.. Cleaned that and no more smell.

I give my gardener cold water, sweet tea and biscuits every day. Sometimes a cold fizzy drink. Last week he told me he was off to Pakistan for 2 months and would I give him more dhs. I had none that day but next day decided to give him 100 dhs. He is still in Dubai, not going/gone to Pakistan. Have a new gardener now, told the boss what did. Don't begrudge him money, I give extra at various times each year. Just not keen on being lied to.
