I tried Boots and Philliphs Advent washable breast pads and both of them leaked so I had to come back to disposable. From the disposable beast pads only Mothercare brand, the ones in the dark pink box with aloe vera, are up to my standards. I think I have tried all the pads in the market and only the Mothercare ones are good.

Before I gave birth in Dubai I was obsessed with having my baby with my all the time. Once in American Hospital the baby was with me all the time, they only took him away to see the pediatrician a couple of times. That was less than 30 minutes. They give you a cot and the baby can be with you all the time. Just tell that to the nurses.

Hi ilovewine, I think you should read the book 'the no-cry sleep solution' by Elizabeth Pantley. It is the most sensible I read so far, especially if you are still breastfeeding and BLW. I have a pdf copy which other lady from this forum kindly emailed me. I can forward it to you if you give me your email address/send me an email. I am very interested in your case, as I have a 6 months 2 weeks baby who is still breastfeeding and I have just started BLW - There are not many ladies in Dubai doing this way so I would love to share experiences if you don't mind. Please send me an email to rchlmiller (at) gmail (dot) com

I have a nursing cover (you can find it in any baby shop in Dubai like mothercare, destination maternity, babyshop) and I breastfeed anywhere in malls, restaurants, and coffee shops. By using the nursing cover nobody can see you. I have been doing it for more than 6 months now and I have not had any problem at all. Sometimes I have even had some smiles from local people showing they were validating my behavior. If you feel insecure, buy the nursing cover and try it the first time at home, and then try it the first time in public in a quiet restaurant or coffee shop. In no time you and you baby will be experts. The other option is what other posters have said: Go into the baby rooms in the malls, some of them have armchairs for breastfeeding, but if you are with more people you cannot enjoy their company while eating or having a coffee. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing a Mum can do with her baby and if you do not show your breast, nobody can tell you anything!

I know that RERA regulations are that the Landlord cannot increase the rent the second year and he can only increase the rent in 5% for the 3rd year but... I paid one cheque last year - can I now pay, for instance, 4 cheques this year? TIA

Hi there, I bought the Stokke baby carrier last July in Mothercare in the UK for 139 GBP. Since then I have used it every day and my son absolutely loves it. He is now almost 9 kg and I still can carry him on the front. The only flaw I can tell you is that Stokke is designed by an Scandinavian brand, therefore it is for cold weather so here in Dubai, if you use it outside it can be sweaty (more for you than for the baby) but I think all carriers are like that. I have not tried Ergo, so I can not tell you, but I did a lot of research before I spent 139 GBP and I concluded Stokke was the best carrier in the market. After 3 months using it every day I can tell you I did a very good purchase. 899 AED does not sound too bad bearing in mind Dubai is an extortion when you are buying baby stuff.

Lilli34 thanks so much for your quick response! I have read a lot about led weaning and it is very discouraging to meet doctors and nurses who support the 'old school' with baby rice and these kind of things. I knew Kelly Moon's website, she is great and I will re-read again, thanks. I am giving my son the vitamins the doctor prescribed but I am worry about the side effect of iron (constipation). Vitamin D: My doctor was so categorical when I told him I was not happy giving synthetic vitamins to my baby that he finally convinced me! Still not entirely happy about it. Water: I am going to continue breastfeeding on demand so I am not too worry about water. Any advise about waking up every 2 hours during the night? He is awake now, I better go. Thanks so much.

Thank you. I have been sent the below for AH for a community doctor to perform a normal delivery....i would be very interested to find out if anyone has managed to come out with the brochure package at AH or City. I almost fell off my chair!! The 8250AED is only for the delivery fee, the doctors fee is for 4,000AED and the doctors rounding fee (this is every visit of the doctor at the hospital) is 630AED per day. Laboratory charges is 750AED and pharmacy is 750AED. Consumables (eg. Syringes, cotton balls, etc.) used is 500AED. For epidural that is 3465AED and routine baby charges is 1,200AED. So total cost estimate is around 20,805AED. edited by samie10 on 02/07/2012 That is about right. My insurance paid AED 27000 for an emergency C section in AH a few months ago.

It really depends a lot on your parenting philosophy/approach. Some people like to "manage" a baby, like its a project, some believe in very parent-led/authorative style where basically you decide precisely how things will be and your baby has no choice but to fit in. Some people see baby books as instruction manuals, “push buttons A, B and C and your baby will do X, Y and Z”. There are plenty of popular books that cater to these ideas. I tend to follow an attachment parenting approach, which is basically the core belief that your priority with parenting is to provide a very secure and nurturing environment, which allows your baby to communicate with you and be listened to in order for all their needs to well met. You are still the parent, ultimately you make decisions but you allow your baby to have a voice and recognize that they have needs both physical and emotional. This means that if your baby is hungry, you listen to that, and feed them, if your baby is scared, and wants you to hold them, you listen to that and comfort them. Your baby shouldn't really ever have to "scream" for a feed, that is really a last resort that babies use when they are being ignored. A lot of people seem to think feeding on demand is about feeding a baby when they cry, its not. Demand/on cue feeding is about feeding a baby when they are hungry, rather than when a book tells you they “should be” hungry. On cue feeding is recommended by major health bodies such as The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Its not that attachment parents don't like the idea of a full nights sleep, its more that that is further down their list of priorities, number one is that their baby feels happy, valued and safe, and is not left scared or hungry. Communication (in two way direction) is very highly valued. So AP parents will gently help their baby transition from being fully dependent on their mother to independent, in every aspect of life, sleeping, eating, soothing, decision making etc etc. If you think you might be an AP parent, have AP leanings, or would like to learn more about this mindset then I would recommend books by Dr Sears, and also the Dr Sears website http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/child-rearing-and-development as well as books by Elizabeth Pantley (such as the no-cry sleep solution) I also strongly recommend this website http://www.parentingscience.com/baby-development.html as everything on it is very well researched and evidence based unlike the majority of things you will read on other websites/forums that are more emotionally driven/based on assumption/wives tales, traditions. For breastfeeding I would recommend instead of a book that you take a class with a board certified Lactation consultant, (a person who is highly trained in current breastfeeding research and also has demonstrated the experience to be board certified) before the birth of your baby so that you have a good understanding of how best to get started, things that have been shown to increase your odds of successful breastfeeding, myths/misunderstandings about breastfeeding (there are so many), the ways that breastfeeding is different to formula feeding and the difference between a breastfed and formula fed baby (for example differences in terms of frequency of bowl movements, giving supplementary water etc) and also budget for a follow up consultation after the birth to check your baby is latching well and getting ot your milk effectively. Note there can be the world of difference between a board certified LC and a sleep trainer who also gives “advice” about breastfeeding so be discerning and if you are told anything that doesn’t sound right check it online. Kellymom http://kellymom.com/category/bf/ is an excellent collection of research and recommendations to do with breastfeeding. In my experience a pediatrician is usually NOT a good person to ask about anything breastfeeding related. Rather than admitting they are not trained in it, they tend to give you answers that are often wildly incorrect and can often jeopardize your breastfeeding success. I cannot agree more with Kiwispiers. Thanks very much for the links, very useful.

Before I delivered my baby I read all GF books... and once I had my baby in my hands nothing made sense to me: Let him cry? A feed at 7.30 pm for 20 minutes? It is no way I was going to do that to my baby!!!!! From the very beginning my baby slept and ate on demand: When he is crying I offer him breast and if he does not want my breast I try to sleep him. And yes, he feels asleep in my arms and he sleeps in my bed regularly. Babies need love and to be close to their mums as much as they can. If they cry they need to be held, even if the only thing they need is love and physical contact with Mummy. Now I have a 3 months old baby who sleeps through the night (he wakes up once for feeding, but because he is next to me in bed I only have to offer my breast and none of us is really awake during this night fed). And he was sleeping all night since the first month. GF advises Mums to introduce a formula feeding in the evenings! That is so wrong as if you feed on demand you won't ever need formula. GF only makes sense if you need to come back to work soon and you are not planning to exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months.

The only way to increase your milk supply is your baby to suck your nipple more. Even if you think your baby is not getting enough milk (which is very difficult as breasts always have some milk) offer your nipple more often. In a day or so your body will be producing more milk. To give your baby a bottle of formula is the beginning of the end of breastfeeding.

A few days ago I started a post in the same subject and I finally decided not to give any artificial vitamin D to my baby but as other poster says I am very conscious with the amount of sun my baby gets. I prefer that than giving any supplements, but this is my personal opinion after reading some information on the subject.

I would strongly suggest to change Dr's or get a second opinion from a Pediatric Specialist! I'm actually gob-smacked that a Dr advocated corn flower to a 4 month old :/: There a quite a few Pediatricans who specialize in nutrition - Dr Michael Loubser and Dr Sanja @ Infinity Health Clinic are very specialized in this field! As for sugar, fruit juice - that is a big NO-NO! My DD only started getting tasters of juice once she was over 1yr old! Some self reading if you wish... http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/solids.htm http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/feeding-infants-toddlers/starting-solids/6-reasons-delay-introducing-solid-food Great advise has been given in this post. Poang chair from Ikea does the job very well and you can find it here for aed 700. I bought it here and I use it for breastfeeding... I also got the footstool which I find indispensable for BF. I think Ikea is also the answer for your second question. I am told Pan emirates also sells cheap furniture.

Thanks ladies for all your help! Kellymom has a very good chapter on D vitamin, this is was I was looking for. With weather getting hotter and more humid it is difficult to go outside, however I will be travelling soon home where baby will be able to sunbathe that is why I am going to avoid the artificial D vitamin drops.... Why is the doctor telling me to put baby next to the window if the right UV don't go through????? I never thought about Vitamin D which is prescribed for babies could have parabens!!!! The more I read about all these stuff the more scared I am...

I have been working on a "housewife visa - do not allow to work" for more than a year now. HR explained that because my company is in a free zone I do not need to change y visa (so they save the money for it). I do have a labour card but provided by my company. There a re a lot of free zones in Dubai where rules are different.

I have just phoned Dubai Taxis and I got the following information: Taxis in Dubai can carry babies on lap if they are in the back seat. It is not necessary to travel with a baby in a car seat in Dubai. Some ladies taxis have a baby car seat when if you book one of those 'they might come or they might not come' so you cannot really rely on this service

This thread is so depressing! I delivered my first one 4 weeks ago and my body is soooooooo different. I will have another one (Insh'Allah) and even a 3rd one but it looks like I will have to work very hard to keep a decent body (and I hate it, grrrrrrrr) Anyway, every time I look at my gorgeous son I think everything is worthwhile! Breastfeeding is helping me to loose some weight... It is not encouraging to know that gets more difficult with 2nd and 3rd pregnancies.... who has time to go to the gym with more than one baby? I find my new boy more than a full time job! Well, I guess with a little bit of organisation during the day we should be able to get 45 minutes exercise... is that enough though?

Very useful list indeed. I am about to deliver my first baby and I can tell you that we get all things we need for the baby and mummy for about AED3,000. Here I include cot, carry cot, stroller, car seat, changing table, baby monitor, nursing bras, breastfeeding cloths for me, baby bjorn, bath plus the majority of things SA_Babe has in her list. All good brands. How? Here you have some tips: - Dubizzle: But you need to log in every 2 days to see what it is available and phone and be ready to collect quick. A lot of products are too expensive but you do find sometimes somebody on a hurry or reasonable who wants to sell quick. - Baby Shop sales - Keep an eye as they are regularly and you do safe loads in cloths and stuff. Max is worth a look for certain things. - Avoid dummies and bottles - I am very aware of nipple confusion when breastfeeding. See how it goes once baby is here though. - Shops online in the UK and Europe are much cheaper than here. I have ordered bras and breastfeeding cloths from Debenhams and Mothercare in the UK websites and delivered to relatives who will bring them to me. - I don´t know the gender of the baby so I cannot go crazy when I am in the shop and I see that little pink vest :). Seriously, if I would know the gender I would have bought much more cloths. - Don´t be shy asking what you need in baby showers and friends and relatives. They really want their pressies to be useful. - Avoid Mamas and Papas, Just Kidding (such a rip off!)and use Mothercare and Baby shop. Carrefour is good for shampoo, sudocream, nappies and other daily stuff. Boots have sometimes some offers. I hope this tips help to organise your budget.

My husband is also working this weekend, late in the evenings and he travels a lot so I am on my own during the week... but it is his job! People need to work hard, specially when they are in their 30's, to get promotions and demonstrate their are capable. My opinion is that we wives need to understand and support our husbands as they are doing it for the family! It is the way it is.We do not have any other option. Most of husbands have a lot of pressure being the big earners for a few years while we wives are taking care of their families. It can be hard to understand it but, in my opinion, the sooner we understand it the better for everybody. For me it is very encouraging to see my husband thriving in his job, managing very big projects and having a very good career. And I know he won't be able to have all of that without my support! It is our money for early retirement and university fees. It is the main reason we are in Dubai. Obviously this is only my opinion but I think it is a little bit unfair that we wives moan and nag about how much our husbands work. This is life when you move to Dubai for a career/savings/lifestyle.

I don't think Dubai is a good place for a guy on his own. I have the opportunity to spend the summer back home and my husband will stay in Dubai on his own and I am very reluctant to do it. Unfortunately Dubai is not the best place to get highlights. They destroyed my hair last year, and only now, after a year, it is starting to look good again. My advise: dont go to a cheap place, go to a good expensive, posh place and be ready to splash your cash as the average places are rubbish. Good luck.

I find it works out better if you put your prices up a bit higher than you're happy to accept, then you can negotiate. But yes, I agree - some of the offers you get are insulting! That is the reason I do not like Dubizzle anymore! I find very overpriced items so I rather buy the items new in a shop. Having said that I am trying to buy a lot of baby stuff second hand, so drop me an email with prices and description of the items/photos and I will let you know if I am interested. I won't expect to negotiate, so just let me know the price you want. My email is rchlmiller7 ad gmail dot com.

Las Christmas I sent to my MIL a bouquet from http://www.mitchellflowers.co.uk/. She loved it, and flowers lasted all Christmas, even in January she was saying that the flowers were still doing well. It is not cheap, but if my MIL was happy is because the flowers were good :) They delivered on time and I gave them less than 8 hours from my order to the delivery time.
