Metro and buses here are awful for that. I told one lady the other day she needed to let me out first, she looked at me as I would be ET. My husband says that this is because certain cultures do not have the same concept of personal space and they are used to live, travel and work alltogether so for them it is normal to push others or to be in your way... I try to understand it in that way but it drives me mad. I cannot really live in a society that does not respect your personal space!

Coming from a Mediterranean country I am very cautious when dealing with other "Mediterranean people". One of the first things I learnt when I was a child is not to trust people. Then I went to the UK for a few years and my mind changed as British people (in Britain) are very decent. However, back in Dubai you find that a lot of people have a British passport (not being British in origin) and some of them definetely do not deserve it (we were scamed thorugh Dubizzle as well by a British person). It annoys me a lot. I was in the UK for 5 years, married a British person, went to have dinner every Sunday with my parents in law, contribute with my taxes to the NINO, I was a respecfull member f the society, my children will be British.... and I could not get the British passport. What annoys me is that the UK is giving passports away to people that have nothing to do with the UK and for people like me who tick all the boxes and even will produce British citizens we cannot be British....

Sorry, my phone is really slow when I post so i'm a bit behind! Lol apologies for not being scandalous enough for a Thursday thread, if no one posts anything better i'll add some fake juicy details later, perhaps involving pampas grass :) GA, thanks. That would be great. The idea of looking after my LO's for an entire afternoon all by myself is mind-numbing. But I do think you need to lay some ground rules -- ie, he must contact you daily or risk finding an empty house on his return :) It has taken me a few years to get my husband to phone me twice a day when he is away. At the beggiging it was awful because he did not contact me at all, but after asking and asking now he does it. He also comes back with nice pictures of his trips, but he has the right to enjoy himself!!!! If not it will be a torture! edited by Nimonemo on 03/04/2011

Hi there we have just got our land line and I am phoning home every time I feel I need to speak to my mum or family in law both in Spain and the UK. Am I going to have a surprise when the bill arrives or it is a reasonable price? I should have checked this in advance, but seriously, I am living in Dubai so if I need to speak with my love ones, I need it... I only want to know if it is very expensive or affordable. Thanks.

To avoid any dissapointment, before he goes I tell him that I would expect to speak to him at least 2 times per day. And then he phones me twice per day (not more, but it is enough). If I do not say anything he might not phone me every day and because I need it I just ask for it. Blokes are different and they have different necesities, it does not mean they love us less, it is that some of them do not need certain things as much as us. That is why a long time ago I learnt how to ask for what I need, and it works!

Heriot Watt is a highly respected institution in the UK. I would steer clear of another well known Australian institution here, don't know if I can say the name, but they use some under qualified teachers on their MBA program and still charge a fortune AdviceSeeker - is this Australian institution located in Dubai International Academic City? Thanks.

I bought my range rover in Dubizzle. We need to take to the garage a couple of times but after that it works fine. If you buy a secons hand car do not give the money to the owner until he has gone with you to the RTA to transfer the owrnership of the vehicle.

I would not recomend a day trip to Musandam for the Dhow trip; they leave early in the morining and by the time you have crossed the border it will be too late to do anything (Last time I was in the border for more than an hour!). Book an hotel there, it is better, if not be ready to get up very very early.

Thursday night, St. Patrick´s day (OK, it is not British, but plenty of British people out there, supporting the Irish). Saturday night: Rugby, Scotland and Ireland well done! Tonight, Rangers won the cup, WELL DONE!!!!!!!!! After this weekend I don´t feel I am in Dubai at all, I think I am still in Glasgow (centainly I drank as many pints as any Glaswegian!).... appart from the weather, of course! It is true I do not have children yet and I am enjoying the "party life" with all the money for ourselves but, what else can I ask for? In the UK they are freezing now, weather here cannot be better, remember that! I do not understand the person who was abusing Spain in that way. Believe me, one of the best countries in Europe to live, if you have money, is Spain. Miles away from both Dubai and the UK. It has the weather, the culture, the food, the charm and the party! The problem is that the economy is knackered and there are not opportunities to make money anymore (for the moment). I am sorry to read you think there are thiefs and you do not like the waiters, but I am sure it is only one unfortunate experience

Cross the border with Oman, eiher in Hatta o Al Ain, it is painless and everybody does it, you only need to drive there. Even if the policeman asks you where are you going, you just tell him Dubai again. He will understand, I did it twice last year until I had all my papers to justify I was married to my husband.

Buying 1.5l bottles generates a lot of waste - very few of these bottles get recycled here and they end up in a dump site in the desert, so it is very unsustainable. Not to mention the plastic used in every bottle. I get reusable Oasis bottles deliver to my flat. AED9 per bottle. It is the most environmentl friendly option for bottled water, it is cheaper and convenient. Hygiene is perfectly fine. We have a very simple water dispenser bought in Lulu supermarket, it is not a water cooler (we do not like cold water) but it costs AED20. It is a bowl where the water drains on and its has a tap to pour your glasses of water.

It is not the same to have a degree from a UK University than a degree from a University in Africa or India. This is a fact and obviously companies know it and that is why people get paid differently for an apparently similar job. Regards UK or Dubai.... I´m not British (my husband is) and I lived for 5 years in the UK and I got depressed. Too much rain, lack of sun and being a foreigner main causes. We needed to move because I could not handle it anymore. The UK can be a difficult country. Having said that, I love British people (specialy my husband and family!) and it seems that British people who travel and live abroad are much more friendly (from the foreigner perspective) that the ones that stay in the UK and go to Margaluf on holidays. Unfortunatelly we are middle class and we are not in the position to choose where to live if we want to have a good education for our children and pay for the universities in the future. We will live where jobs are. So Dubai is great for that. Saving money. Enjoying a new culture. Learning from the Islam. Enjoying 5 star hotels that I would have never even to consider to visit. Have jobs that you would not have in Europe... If we are here we need to think positive. And there are plently of reasons to be an optimistic. Just compare yourself with the person who opens your door every day. Coming back to the UK? On holidays, every year. Living in the desert the best place to spend holidays is Scotland. I cannot wait to June!

Agree with long - Fish and vegetable market in Deira is the best in Dubai, the problem is that is too far (I live in the Marina) Strongly disagree with Pomegranate: Aubergines, brocoli, pepers, bananas, lettuce, tomatoes, zuchini, eegs, yogurt, milk, water, etc. are locally produced (UAE or Oman), cheap and good. My main problem is that Spinneys and Waitrose do not sell local products, they sell peppers from Holland that are more than 10 times more expensive!!!!! That is crazy. Not to mention the carbon footprint of bringing tomatoes from Holland by plane... The small bananas from Oman I bought once at Lulu were the best bananas I have ever eaten in my life. Brocoli from Abu Dhabi is one of my favourites. Local yogurt is very good. I do not know if Lulu is the cheaper, but you only need to see the people who buys there in comparison with Spinneys...

Hi, I live in Green Lake Towers and cooling fee is included in my annual rent so I do not have to pay it appart. When you rent the flat, did the landlord or the agency tell you about the cooling fee? Because all the flats I visited had the coolong fee included in the rent.

Hi, I am Spanish and I know that the manager of Al Hambra used to work at Seville's as a manager. I have never been to Al Hambra (I'll do it at some point though) but tapas at Sevilles are awesome and I know that the manager is trying to imitate Sevilles in Al Hambra, so it should be good! Please, if you go let us know your review as it is always good to know good Spanish restaurants in Dubai.
