I was in Ibn Battuta Mall by Toystore (Egypt Court) this afternoon with my 2 little ones when suddenly appeared two men with professional looking cameras. They were taking fotos of the walls seemingly interested in the interior design but something about them made me suspicious so I watched them closely. I saw that they were taking photographs on the sly of children without permission. Vey quickly I saw one photographing my daughter. I straight away confronted him. He just looked so shifty, seriously I can't explain why my hackles went up so fast, some sixth sense. But I was really angry! He told me he was just photographing the wall paintings but I insisted on seeing his camera. Sure enough there was a full photo of only my daughter! I made him delete it + another appeared + another close up. What on earth! It really didn't seem innocent to me. The fotos of my DD were deleted but how many other children had their pictures taken by them today I wonder. And why?! Please Please report this to both mall security and the police and read the warning on the siliconoasis.org website re attempted child abduction.

I'm half way through chemo for breast cancer, i have surgery and radiotherapy to come. I never made it back to Dubai after my summer holiday, I'm in rented accommodation with none of my personal belongings yet other than the suitcsse I brought for my vacation. BUT i value every day more than ever, it doesn't matter to me where I am in the world as long as i'm with DH and my 2 precious little ones - they make me smile, laugh and give me joy every day. We make opportunities wherever we are in life, change can be good even it doesn't feel like it in the short term. Stay positive :o) Wishing you a very speedy recovery Scribs.Sending healing and positive thoughts your way (and of course loads of cyber hugs).

I always remember a simple thing my Mum once said to me when I was really down. Things will always look better in the morning. My Gran always said this too but first it was. Lets have a cuppa love, it will help clear your head. What wonderful memories this brings back.

Anytime I am feeling down, I remember my friend Darcy. She was a beautiful 20 year old girl who was injured in a head on collision. They had to amputate her legs just above the knee to save her life. Before the accident we all thought Darcy was beautiful, but kind of spacy. I stepped into her hospital room prepared to try to cheer her up. There she was, strapped to a rotating bed, hooked up to IV's. I hesitantly stepped into her view. Darcy's face lit up and she said "Aleeeettaaaa! It's so good to see you! Well, they had to take my legs, and I'm paralyzed from here down. Tomorrow they are going to do surgery and put rods in my spine so I can sit up. But LOOK! I still have my arms! That means I can get myself in and out of a wheelchair and feed myself, and go to the bathroom by myself! Isn't that GREAT!" I was stunned. I spent every day of the next 30 days in the Spinal Care Injury Unit with Darcy. I only saw her get angry once, and it didn't last long. That was 17 years ago and she still inspires me. Recent photos show her on top of a grassy hill, her long blond hair in the breeze, and her smiling suntanned face. She is still in a wheelchair, but she is thankful every day for her blessings. She is a stonger person than me, and I aspire to be more like her. Wow....... You can't get more positive than that.Your friend sounds amazing.

Khatoon, Whenever I am feeling down I light a candle,it sheds light and helps me make a connection to God by doing something physical. When I am concerned about family/friends or a particular situation I light a candle and say a prayer.I will light one for you today. I believe that the energy we put out is that which we get back. Be positive that your life will sort itself out the way it is meant to be. On another note a positive story to add. Yesterday my son found a 2 week old kitten next to its dead mother on the side of the road. This little bundle of fur has turned the house upside down, the 3 adult cats are walking around swearing ,my Grandson 20 mths. is trying to love it to death etc. All thanksgiving preperation was put on hold to take care of wash and feed the furball. However we all gave thanks at our Thanksgiving dinner that DS found this little scrap and that we were all together and healthy. All the best and big cyber hugs XX <em>edited by Nomad on 12/10/2011</em>

THE COVE is heartbreaking =(. However, it doesn't mean that all establishments involving dolphins are evil, wild-baby-dolphin stealing, money extortion establishments. Reputable centers that tend to do rescues and self-breeding only are fine to support - generally these establishments are the ones advocating public awareness about the environmental crisis and how people can help (don't litter, reuse/recycle, etc.). The use of well-loved animals like dolphins is then meant to reach out to portray that message. However, it being Dubai, I am not so sure which category the Atlantis/Dolphinarium fall into... Well put SC. Look no further than the saga with the whale shark....... Do a bit of homework before you support organizations that use animals as any form of entertainment or therapy ,as they call it.

My GS had them from age 1 for about 3 mths. His Pead suggested waking him up 10 minutes before he would normally have them (his were pretty consistant time and length wise). It has something to do with the fact that they can't pass from a deep sleep into normal, they get stuck.Hope that makes some sense! This did help a lot but as I said his were pretty easy to track. What also helped was a strict routine and no stimulants before bed. Fingers crossed he hasn't had any in nearly a year now. As others have said it upsets the parents more than the child. All the best.

I didnt see the thread here on Expatwoman but Mickey's story made me very very upset yesterday. I spent the evening writing a letter in Arabic to a known Arabic newspapers in UAE and I mentioned to them that they never cooperate with animal lovers and put such stories in Arabic.. There is lot of Arabs in this country and many of them read Arabic newspapers so they should also bring up the animal abuse subject.. I dont know if they will respond to my letter but it is a real shame that they dont bring up these subjects and it is a bigger shame that no one is catching the people who are hurting these poor animals. I hope Mickey is doing well.. Well done JS. Animals in the UAE need an animal advocate who can put thier case across in Arabic. Thank you.

Have sat on my hands long enough LOL. SueB seems you are reading my mind !! Great post. guinness was upset about your referance to lack of education and planning making for resentment. I would have loved to persue a career in nursing but at the time it was just not possible due to family circumstances/finances etc. Added to that I was pretty much like Chocs1 re academics, probably would have taken me twice as long as others to qualify!!! My GM worked ( one of the first to become a female legal sec. still have her certificates) My mom worked to the detrament of my little brothers who relly needed her at home, but she had no option. I was in the fortunate position to have part time work once my boys started school and we limped along salary wise.Cut the cloth so to speak. When I had the opportunity I found a niche(sp) helping others who were terminally ill. This helped me fulfill a part of wanting to be a healer. I guess what I am trying to say their are many ways to fulfill our dreams as working/non working moms. I honestly never get into this debate (this one exception) as I really feel each circumstance is different and we all should do the best we can with the cards we are dealt. However please don't judge me from the sidelines, that goes for the For and Against working mums debate. <em>edited by Nomad on 04/10/2011</em>

Lived in Japan for 3 years, one in Tokyo .Despite hearing about train pusher rumours at home never saw it in all my travels. One of the most polite and pleasant folk I have ever known. Arrived in DXB from Japan and what a shock. Had lived inthe ME in the early 90's loved every minute of it but must admit that DXB 2007 was huge wake up. I could never put my finger on the reason for the general rude behaviour just found it so sad.

Agree with guiness. Are you sure she has arranged their trip to Oz,sounds really iffy to me. Before re homing them get ALL the details from her about their trip and has she paid upfront. If she can't supply you with these I would start to make alternative arrangements for these poor pets. After all of the above a good slap upside her head, she should have made proper arrangements before leaving. What ever you do please don't abandon them. All the best.

Big Blue you have hit the nail on the head. I think the biggest reason for all the excitement is the fact that there is a little bit of "home" in DXB,for so many Canadians. A friend sent me 11 pics of them buying donuts and coffee!!! I know when we hit the tarmac in Canada the first thing on the list was a Canadian Maple !!! I am not a donut fan, give me a chedder cheese bagel with cream cheese and tomatoe any day. Hmmmm getting hungry think I'll nip down to Timmy's quick...... Enjoy your little bit of Canada and the memories that go along with it.

but i kinda class a human right as things like clean water, education, health care - things on this vein rather than having the king of chav hair cuts..... It falls under a category of rights, such as right to freedom of thought and speech. Maybe freedom to [allow ones hair'> to move :D umm - it's just twisting the ethos of it all really..... Think they should dump the little brat in some small village in Bangladesh for a couple of months and then see what he thinks are important human rights!!!! (and that evil streak is back) Agree, and send his numpty of a father with him! The scarey thing is when will it dawn on people when enough is enough. As Princess says it should be for "real" issues of human rights absuses. These silly issues just make a mockery of real abuse.

Well Done !!!! A really good motivator is to go online ( any of the quitting smoking sites ) and read the stats on how the lungs start to "repair" themselves, even after 1 day. Read an article recently and it broke down the timeline, quite amazing ,they also had an indicator of the extended lifespan and heart/stroke risk reduction. Hang in there girl. I know with my DH (quit 35 yrs ago) his first few weeks were h3ll for ALL.... but it did get easier and after 3 months he found it a lot easier. He was a heavy smoker and till this day he still dreams about it.After a really good meal he will still say this is when a smoke would go down well. Like many things that are add1ctive I think given the right circumstance you could go back to it really easily. I know DH will always have to have his guard up. Sending very positive thoughts your way, you can do it.;) All the best. <em>edited by Nomad on 20/09/2011</em>

I’m just wondering how it’s possible to have an operation in the UK when you don’t live there The OP is reaching out for advice re a very serious medical issue. The last thing she needs right now is the 3rd degree about who is paying. To JS no advice to give you other than as a previous poster said make lists and do one thing at a time. You are very wise getting your ducks in a row way ahead of time. All the very best with your op and recovery, life will be so much easier with the new hip.

Can't say they will or not as my neighbours "Damas" started to lift the garden wall foundations of our villa. I wouldn't chance it though once they start looking for water who knows. I will try and find my Dubai garden book and look up the name of a hedge I plated. It had a lovely yellow flower and grew like spit ( like most things in Dubai !!)a small turmpet like little flower, not the big trumpet creeper. Possibly ask at the garden souk, they always gave me a botanical lesson when I went shopping !!

Sorry twin_butterfly I am no longer in DXB. Would gladly share the bounty if I was. Back in Canada, I keep in touch with the goings on in Dubai ( and elsewhere !) through EW. Miss it terribly some days... A bit off topic but read an article yesterday where a lady in the UK rescues battery hens and knits little jumpers for them until their feathers grow back. There was a photo of a bald hen in a purple jumper.. Too cute.

@QF: what broad and unsubstantiated generalizations...it's easy to play expert and pull the "I told you so" card when things go bad, isn't it? In any case, why don't you check some OECD reports issued this year to see which nations work the least (and it isn't Greece by the way). That's right. The problems are more structural. A great article on the greek mess is http://www.vanityfair.com/business/features/2010/10/greeks-bearing-bonds-201010 and this one takes the other side and looks at Germany - only vanity fair would publish an article in which the Germans' obsession with anality (yes, the bottom) is used to analyze their economic tendencies. http://www.vanityfair.com/business/features/2011/09/europe-201109 Happy reading! Thanks guinness the articles were very informative. I am a babe in the woods when it comes to International finances etc.I have trouble balancing my bank acc !! I can remember way back when the EURO was being discussed and thinking to myself how the heck is this going to work.I actually felt so silly thinking that way, that I didn't even pose the question to a friend who was in Brussels working as translater in the finances meetings etc....I still don't know that much but at least I have an idea about what went wrong in Greece. Lets hope that it can get some what sorted. <em>edited by Nomad on 13/09/2011</em>

Seriuosly - Dubai does not need another Animal Charity. the ones dubai has are doing amazing things. Stop making this all about you and please contribute to the animal charities we have. Lots of people moving in the same direction will make a much bigger impact. By trying to set up on your own you actually detract from what K9 and Feline friends and DARC are accomplishing. Phew rant over. Princess_I maybe an apology is in order...... I too have followed Kristina_rmnv and she does nothing else but try and HELP when it comes to assisting animals in distress(working with the local animal charities). Making a statement like"stop making this all about you" is very personal and in my opinion quite uncalled for on this particular thread. To Kristina don't let the negatives detract from the great effort you are putting in. All the best for your "play date/bbq "....... ;) edited by Nomad on 09/09/2011 edited by Nomad on 09/09/2011 <em>edited by Nomad on 09/09/2011</em>

I would put my kids before anyone (including my DH) And I can't seperate it quite like that...I am her mother, his wife, and myself, but the whole is our family unit and THAT has to be the bit that is put before all else. PLEASE do not buy puppies and kittens from pet shops. All you're doing is encouraging puppy mills, bad breeding practices and the poor animals being brought in underage. So many animals bought from pet shops have health issues and will cost you a fortune in vets bills. There are NO breeders in this country, so all the animals are imported. If you're really desperate to have a pedigree, source a good, reputable breeder and bring the animal in yourself. Otherwise, there are plenty of poor dogs in shelters desperate for a loving home. Agree Chocs01. To OP please re consider what these poor puppies go through, even before they get to Dubai ,is horrendous. There are so many shelter animals just begging for a loving home. You can save a life.
