Dally I am so glad to hear you are doing well. Have followed your fight and progress over the months. You have taken control and decided on a course of action, an informed choice. Thank you for sharing this information. I am not disagreeing with organic sourcing, however in Canada the organic industry is not as "efficiently" policed as your general produce. They don't fall under the same rules. I am VERY aware of what I put into my body, right down to my hormone therapy, I have even visited the farm and ethical slaughter process where I get my meat eggs and chicken, unannounced.Yes I pay a bit more but I believe it is the right thing to do and we just cut down on meat consumption. Once again I commend you Dally it's all in the balance and knowledge is power.

For all the animal advocates out there. There is a cat in desperate need of help and a kind soul is trying to sort it out. Please if anyone can assist in any way. I have suggested she put the plea on the main forum.

Hi all, There is a cat in my office complex who has clearly been beaten... I have fed her with some milk and biscuits but this morning she doesn't look good and is very raw under her chin/chest. It also looks as though someone has sprayed her with water and she was drenched this morning too. I cannot take her in as I live with a friend at the moment and cannot get through to Feline Friends - can anyone suggest anything? I can't stop thinking about the poor thing! Any suggestions would be really appreciated! Thank you in advance... S Suggest you put this plea on the main forum and ask the mods to please leave it up. The board has become very quiet the last few months and I don't think many come onto the pet section anymore. Sorry I am no longer in Dubai, I would help in a heartbeat.

 To be honest I'm appalled by this! Suppose I am a maid or a nanny; does that give her the right to scold me? Another thing, was she that much blind to see how my children look exactly like me minus the skin colour? I'm fuming, can't and won't let it go, I had this bad treatment many times over the years and every time I correct the person and don't get an apology at all, I am really really ****** off! To me OP seems to be fuming about both being mistaken by a maid and the teacher feeling that it's ok to scold a maid which she wouldn't do to a parent. But the poor middle-aged teacher (a term just as judicial as the accusation itself) is getting the full load because apparently it has happened to OP before. Totally overreacting if you ask me. Just let it go. Life is too short to be bothered by these things. You seem to really have issue with me OD, that's fine with me, as it's your problem not mine. This poor teacher as you describe, was aware of my phone call to the school, stating that my car broke down and couldn't be fixed by myself and got AAA to tow it to the garage, and gave them expected time of my arrival with taxi, as I'm in the process of hiring a maid that I already issued her access card to the school, again the maid is at home in mirdif and the school in springs - long story you have nothing to do with- and then me showing up to school with sweaty attire and some dirt on my jeans, and my hands too. This poor teacher as your description thought it was ok to scold the help, as most of nannies, maids and drivers don't answer back, again there is plenty of families do let the help pick up the children, but not me; I wouldn't let my maid do the trip to pick up my children..... That poor teacher as you described "thought" she can scold a grown up person and get away with it, that poor teacher at start denied what she said, that poor teacher said sorry once she knew she was cought as my children witnessed her attitude toward me. As a classic victim blaming tactic you practic; to find a reason justify your personal attack, all I can say to you: you really need to practic yoga, so you can love yourself, really I don't write for you, and I hope this is my last post to you, and go ahead find another poster to pray on, in another thread I stated that I do not entertain any post or reply on my queries or rants, yet you keep getting yourself into it! I suggest you stay away from me, you already stated you don't like me, and that's ok with me, because that's your own problem not mine. Adios Gorobattie, you should look into the history of past post about maids, questions asked about helping them, work hours, general working conditions etc. Oopsiedaisy is always giving advice and is very invested in their welfare and wellbeing. Granted I don't always agree with her opinion on other things but regarding maids I couldn't agree with her more. Her reply was NOT a personal attack but an opinion. If you don't want ALL personal opinions on a open forum then I would suggest you find a group that will only ever agree with your point of view.

All the years I lived in the ME I washed my own car and did my own gardening ( gardener only ever did mowing and heavy lifting as he had no idea what was a weed or a plant !) spoiled myself once a month and got cleaners in to give the house the once over. One day I was giving my car a good clean behind the ears inside and out, sweating like a racehorse hair drenched under a tatty hat. Police patrol drives past slams on brakes and asks for my papers. I was so out of it I looked at him and said excuse me and walked over to his car. He literally turned grey, slunk down in his seat and recovered sufficiently to stammer out an apology. I burst out laughing told him not to worry and that some of us madams do know how to do a days work........ Gorobattie yes she may have been out of line but there are ways to reach a resolution. If you take these things so personally it will eventually take over your life while living in the ME. There is so much more to life.

Jet lagged? Funny, because most of the pilots I know are out on the p*ss all the time - that's why they're flippin' tired. Too much parting - the single ones anyway. Long haul is a drag, but on many flights, they now have heavy crews that rotate during the flight, plus let's face it - autopilot, auto lands etc etc. I know a husband and wife team, both pilots on the A380 fleet, they really are passing planes in the night. Sorry FD we agree on many things but you are way out of line with this one. Unless you are married to a pilot or are a pilot with EK at present you have no idea , " I know a husband and wife team " does not cut it. I read your comment about rotation of heavy crews and autopilot to my DH his comment " ignorance is bliss isn't it "........ Note I was primarily talking about the 'single' guys, not the married ones. Well you know if they don't like it, they can always go to other airlines. Air Arabia pay MORE than Emirates and they only do short haul flights. Everywhere has their ups and downs, sure it's not what it used to be, but sadly there are more pilots than jobs out there right now. Sure lots of them moan and complain, and lots of the perks have now gone, but they're still better off than in many other places. Some people are better at dealing with the long haul and time zones than others. So maybe short haul is better option for those people. There's no question that those on main fleet have a tougher time than the A380 crews, who seems to have much more down time. But with the rate of expansion I don't think that's going to last long either. I am far from ignorant on the subject and probably am more informed than you think. You don't have to be married to a pilot to know things. I know people across the board including those poor folk who have to do their best to keep the crew happy, even though their hands are tied. Your comments about heavy crews and the auto pilot did it for me......sorry but not an informed comment. I say again unless you are married to or are a EK pilot at the moment you have no idea what they are experiencing .......siennachick has nailed it. And comparing the military to commercial flight crew.... At times I would not see my DH for between 6 to 8 months at a time when he could find a contract. ETA word is that Air Arabia is reaching saturation , who do you suggest the EK pilots try next ? bearing in mind that EK employs a huge pilot body.

Nomad, no need to be so defensive! I was merely asking if anyone has had experience with BHRT, either good or bad. I have not yet made up my mind on whether to go down this path and will keep an open mind while I research further. The facts are that BHRT is not recognised by many medical bodies, including the FDA and that it is classified as an alternative medicine that has not been definitively established through scientific testing. So on this basis I am interested to hear any stories - yes it is my body (and my wallet) and that's why I'm taking this seriously! Defensive.........You asked for experiences, I gave you mine. I tried regular HRT.......disaster, did research on BHRT, it worked, simple as that.

It seems like you have made up your mind about BHRT. Do yourself a big favour and research HRT, see where the ingredients for a very popular dryness cream for certain " areas " comes from....... Just one example. My BHRT Progesterone and Estrodial are made primarily from jams and soy, have been on them for 5+ years. Yes I have gained a bit of weight and they are more expensive than regular HRT but I am particular about what I put into my body and will forgo other luxuries to make sure I can afford my BHRT. Not sure where you got the information that BHRT is "not proven to help medically " news to me as I am walking proof ! But hey it's your body...........

The whole point on having an active online ex-pat forum is to share ideas, thoughts and knowledge.....this is what makes interaction stimulating and interesting. As with everything in life, people have different views which causes debate which can get animated at times. I can think of numerous threads where there has been lively, albeit intelligent debate which have been deleted by Admin - a lot of these threads had several pages of postings and were just deleted. Hence heavy censorship has the effect of i) deterring women from expressing different views and ii) preventing any kind of debate and iii) preventing women from putting in any effort into posting given the risk of the thread being deleted. Hence I have seen a number of informed women leave EW and the board is relatively stagnant. Instead of discussion around a variety of topics, the board is now heavily populated with the usual "Please help me / my husband find a job" postings. Sigh..... Yep and when the sun comes up this one will be deleted too. Really sad but I fear it is too far gone.

Afternoon ladies. It's been long and I have been busy with hospitals this past year. Right now it's been 20 days my son's been hospitalized. We need a suctioning unit for the doctor to agree to send us home. It has already been purchased but I will only have it by Saturday. The hospital is no longer providing. I asked the Social worker to lend me one. There is only a fifty percent chance to get one. Any ideas.:( Sorry I can be of no help. Bumping up and sending you and your family my thoughts and prayers.

You could start by fostering. Check bin kitty collective or K9 friends on Facebook. There are too many cats and dogs here desperate for homes. There usually are kittens on the page too Slightly off topic.. But can you or anyone else share their experience of fostering ? How does it work? The pet stays with you for how long and what you do when you go on holidays? Is the foster family responsible for putting them in kennels/cattery? Or they can go back to bin kitty/k9 friends for that period? We'd love to foster a cat but not sure of how it works. Any details would be great? Contact Bin Kitty or Feline friends. Explain you have never fostered before, they will walk you through it. Personally I have never enjoyed anything more, gave me my Kitty " fix " as I wasn't able to bring my hoard along with me. They will match you up with a cat/kitten, and will take care of all the vet bills etc. when you go on holidays another foster parent will take over the care while you are away. As far a food is concerned I always absorbed those costs but they also offer to provide food. HTH. Thanks for all the information. I have had a pet cat before ,who died before we moved here . It was a rewarding experience and we still miss him. Hopefully with fostering we could have something similar for our kids. The only problem would be how NOT to fall in love with the foster cat!? For every cat you foster and adopt out, you make space for the next poor soul to come into your home. It is difficult to let go but after a few days when the next one arrives and needs your help you focus on that..... I am still in contact with some of my foster babies and their "New" parents ! Go on give it a try.;)

Hi Jumeriah Jane Theres a great website http://www.modernalternativemama.com/vaccine-posts/ A lot of research has been done into vaccinations, sge has detailed posts on risk-benefit analysis etc. What many people don't know is how toxic these vaccinations are and how harmful they can be to small babies especially. I think your being very responsible to ask the question and every parent should be entitled to an informed decision wether that be to vax or not. Something else to know is what ingedients are in these shots, I think you'd be shocked to find out that many of the vax contain Formaldehyde. This is an antimicrobial, toxin inactivator and stabilizer. It is in anthrax, DTaP, DTaP-Hib-IPV, DTaP-Hib, Td, DT, Hep A, Hep A-Hep B, Hib, Hib-Hep B, flu, IPV, Tdap. It is a known carcinogen (causes cancer), and has been linked to nasal cancer and leukemia, among others. You can ask to see the ingredients listed on the vax box at the Dr's. If you type in Formaldehyde on google have a peek at how many everyday products we use once sometimes twice a day contain it as an ingredient. It's preservative nature make it widely used.....not just in vaccines.

Personally I think a bird for a 4 year old to take care of is not a good idea. Birds are very fragile and difficult to handle and their cages are no fun to clean. A 4 year old would soon lose interest. I have two grandchildren 5 and 8 I have a parrot. The younger of the two ,even after watching me do all the cleaning / feeding, still has not grasped how to clean up and care for Pietie. We have cats and dogs and he helps with their daily routines so he does know about caring for pets but other than chatting to Pietie occasionally prefers the cuddly animals.

Thanks a lot ladies, obviously as parents we want the best for our kids. But if there are diseases which have been eradicated, then why the need for some vaccins? After all you are introducing a virus in the first place...which itself could trigger the disease.. Thanks again. They have NOT been totally eradicated, and thanks to people who decide that they might know better than the entire, world wide medical profession, and would rather trust to some Googled myth, they may never be wiped out. Ignorance, myth and fear will make sure of that. Vaccination does NOT trigger the disease, it stimulates the antibodies which prevent infection from that particular illness. We have actually known that for nearly 200 years. Please listen to your Dr, don't add to the problem, and get your baby vaccinated. The " twins " posting the same thing at the same time......;)

But that's just it , they HAVENT been eradicated, hence my comment First World Problems. A simple internet search where is polio still a threat will bring up all the countries where the disease is still prevalent. Thanks to the " genius " of " Dr " Wakefield's flawed and discredited research of links to Autism and Vaccinations those areas where these diseases still existed infiltrated countries that had all but eradicated them. Mothers stopped getting their children vaccinated and the cycle started all over again. Earlier this year DL in California was a major hot zone.....I read the other day California is working towards making it against the law NOT vaccinate your child. As a pervious poster said do loads of research but be careful there is a lot of Cooky info out there. A general rule of thumb I use is to listen to those who have actual proof.

Some of the posts on here are quite terrifying in their ignorance. Please ladies, vaccinations against KILLER diseases are one of the greatest gifts modern day science has given to humanity. If anyone doubts that, take a walk through any graveyard predating 1950 and check out the ages of the children buried there. Your children are a precious gift, you have a moral duty to protect them with every resource you can access. And NO, Autism is NOT caused by vaccinations, that pernicious theory was posited by one doctor who has been since struck off for falsifying his findings. Hardly a just punishment for the terrible damage he has done to those families who believed him.. Please don't add to the toll of dead or damaged children, please, please protect your children by vaccinating. Good post LT. My mom had a friend who contracted polio during the outbreak in the 30's. It was touch and go but she survived , not without life long suffering. Leg irons to walk hunched over like a geriatric, landing up in a wheelchair in later years as it was just too painful to walk. She has, like my mom, since passed but I would love to ask her opinion........such First World problems EH.......

Hello Ladies, Vaccination is a hot topic on the forum! My little baby will be reaching 4 months and will be due for his vaccination. I have been reading about the vaccinations and was wondering if there are any mums who have skipped baby vaccinations?? I understand that there are vaccines which you should do, but things like polio shots, etc? are they really required? I know if I ask the doc, she will say yes to each one of them. thanks Why would you expose your child to the possibility of contracting polio ? You live in a region where people come from all over including regions ( won't name individual countries for fear the thread gets deleted ) where these dreaded diseases have re appeared. Do a bit of a search on the net and have a look at the poor children who have recently been struck down by said diseases, it is heartbreaking.

Two weeks in rural India, Asia or Africa with zero modern amenities, no internet or phone and actually doing some hard graft giving back to societies who have nothing would be far more beneficial to any typical expat child from that school. It would cost very little but give so much, far more than an overpriced jolly. Can only give one thumbs up but would like to plaster the page with them ! In my travels the young folk I have met who have given back in this way have such a different view of life when they return home.

It's a shame it's people that needs help if it would have been illegal hunting of lions or tortured dogs and cats, some would maybe have more compassion and wouldn't expect them to pay back for all the costs involved of helping. Generally those who genuinely have COMPASSION do not distinguish, who says you can only care about the plight of humans OR animals. In all my years working for animal rescue I can say with certainty that many of those who I worked shoulder to shoulder with were also there when responding to human tragedy. And some people can fight with shadows...pick an argument out of nothing. You introduced the issue..... I responded with my opinion and personal experience. Nomad, my point wasn't that animal lovers don't care about humans, sorry if it came across that way. The point I was trying to make was that way more support shows towards abused animals or unlawful killing of animals, you just wouldn't read so many hateful things about the animals anyway. Thank you.

We as a family have discussed sponsoring a family and have looked into it. Unfortunately at this point in time it won't work but we have not ruled it out completely and when my health improves will visit it again. I feel so helpless not being able to do more other than send prayers of support. In the past I have supported most requests for funds for most charities only to find out later that VERY little actually gets to where it is actually needed. As a child my gran used to say " you want to save the world but it starts with just one small step " and I am now working on that first step, can anyone recommend a charity they know will get my money to where it is actually needed ? As an aside, I am just so tired of reading about these celebrities who are now coming out of the woodwork grabbing headlines because they have decided to do their bit......just do it quietly and without the fanfare. ETA love the idea proposed by the Billionaire from Egypt....... Would work in my " Perfect World". Hi Nomad, I know a charity called Souriat Across Borders (https://www.facebook.com/souriyat.across.borders?ref=ts&fref=ts). Honestly, I couldn't recommend a better charity, I personally know a couple of the founding ladies and the work they are doing is incredible. They are primarily working with the refugees in Jordan and have set up rehabilitation centres, schools, work places, accommodation, etc. The main purpose of their charity is not to give out aid but to use donations to help the Syrian refugees re-integrate into society and be able to make a living for themselves, they obviously do give out aid where needed as well. My mom visited the Zaatari refugee camp with this organisation, and to be honest she was very disappointed at what she saw in terms of how lazy some of the people had become because they knew that aid would be just given to them so they felt no need to work or try and make their own life. I can't say enough about this charity, one of the projects they were working on last winter was to exchange the refugee tents for caravans, which provide much better shelter. The cost of one caravan was between 600-1000 dhs, and there were literally thousands of tents that required replacing. I think you can also sponsor a family through the charity (my mom does) and it's literally something like $100-$200 per month. Take a look at their Facebook page, the posts are in both English and Arabic. Hope this helps! Thank you SEY83 I will look into it, sounds like what I am after.

Your feelings are normal.......some find it a bit easier than others dealing with your first child's first day at school. That saying give them wings and set them free comes to mind. As you yourself say he seems to be quite ready but you aren't..........that's the issue. The best thing you can do for your LO is give him the tools to handle the world out there. I will be seeing my grandson off tomorrow for his first day at " Big School " , he is beside himself with excitement and has been wearing his backpack around for the last week. His mom can't wait, being the second child and after a LONG summer everyone needs the break !

So sorry to hear your cat has escaped. EW used to have a to do list when you lost your pet but I can't seem to find it, so here is a bit of a list: Have loads of flyers made with a big picture and the word REWARD in big letters across the top. Hand them out to the maids and gardeners in you area offering a good reward, they have an amazing network.Be prepared as they can be mistaken and bring along someone else's moggie who looks a bit like yours ! Post a lost add on EW ,Dubizzle, Bin Kitty Collective and Feline Friends with pictures and reward. Get hold of the vets in your area, put up flyers and leave all your details with them. Walk around during the quieter evening hours shaking a bag of bikkies calling his name. Ask neighbours if they mind checking their garages, sheds etc. Maybe someone else has a few more tips to add. I can only imagine how distressed you must be but don't give up hope.

If we could all mind our own business and stop commenting on how other people look I think we'd all be happier... There may be a junk food revolution but all I see is a craze for health and fitness..And mums obsessing about their kids eating healthily.. Personally I'm grossly overweight and have been for years but I refuse to lose any sleep over it..life's too short to stuff a mushroom... Exactly DT . What has happened to good old common sense. I too have put on weight going through menapause, but it's a case of managing so much that you do the best you can. If it worries others that just too bad , I eat a balanced diet don't deny myself those odd treats and to blazes with the rest. Nomad could I please be nosy and ask where you put the weight on during menopause. Mine has steadily been creeping up for the same reason, but suddenly my waist has just disappeared :( Not nosey at all ! Yep, round the waist and a bit above, have a muffin top for the first time in my life....... I am extremely active all day long but it is really stubborn so I just go with the flow. I am on a alternative natural hormone plan ( don't support the cruel practices associated with conventional HRT ). Have been on it for 10years but recent blood work suggests I still need my meds. Hoping that one day when I come off the extra pounds will " melt away " but not holding my breath

Hi Polly, As I mentioned please go and have a word with Nad Al Sheba. By buying from a pet shop ( torture chamber ) you will merely be making a space available for the next victim.....heartbreaking but a reality. If we all stopped buying from pet shops they would all go out of business. Sorry for the lecture, will put the soap box away now ! You need to spend loads of quality time teaching them firstly to trust you only then can you start bringing them out their cage, but that is way down the line. They need a big cage, are very messy, need a good varied diet, and are extremely noisy. I let ours out daily in the house, there are those who walk around everywhere with the bird on their shoulder but I think this is careless, they don't need that kind of exposure. I adopted my first from a family where the parent had passed , the bird had outlived their owner and the family just wanted to get rid of it. They didn't really care what happened to Ted he had to leave. He spent the next 30 years with our family. The second came to me after being the victim of a home invasion, she was terrorized and traumatized and despite our constant love and attention still bears the scars. Madam will only let my son handle her ( she actually tries to feed him ) never mind that I am the one who cares for her feeds her let's her out etc. and when she gets the chance she can give one heck of a bite. If you are determined to get one do loads of homework rather before than after the fact, can you take it with you when you leave DXB one day ? Larger parrots of all kinds are one of those pets that are for life.......your life , and possibly longer. All the best with your decision.

I have had 2 greys in my lifetime.......60 odd years. Both were rescues. 1.The first thing to consider is can you care for the bird for the next 60+ years. They have a long life expectancy. 2. If as an expat you are going to be moving around the world it can be a problem with some countries ie in light of the avian flu issues, even if your bird in numbered and ringed. 3. When I say commit I mean commit, they need constant stimulation/attention and are extremely intelligent birds. If they aren't happy they can suffer from depression. 4. Personally I would not get 2 as one at a time is more than enough of a commitment. 5. Have a chat with the avian specialists at Nad Al Sheba, they are a mine of information when it comes to greys. Something I should have put at the top of my suggestions..... Make sure if you do go ahead, that the grey comes from a reputable source and not a backyard breeder or smuggler.
