My Dad was motorcycle fanatic, we peeled him off the road, literally, many times.Broken back, neck, don't think that there was one bone in his body that wasn't broken, as I said my boys inherited that passion.A wise motorcyclist ( not my dad ! ) once told me to completely ban it would send them ' underground ' he was the one who suggested that we work ' with it '. After my experiences with my father can't say I was happy about it but we reached a compromise , but they understood very clearly that if anyone did something daft the whole thing would be scrapped. Thus I was so livid about the little lout who ran me off the pathway, lucky I was wearing trousers and not a dress ! edited by Nomad on 08/04/2014

The point is that I am NOT considering it, but he cannot see why, as he knows people who parents (apparently) are. 13 is an age where they have good friends and yes I know and speak to their parents and for the most part we can dampen down their ideas. However, it's also an age where they need to have a certain amount of freedom (hard as it is, needs to be done) and inevitably they will meet others, and true or not the 'friends' always have it better. My boys were motorbike fanatics so we channeled that energy. Got them lessons on how to ride properly and took them either to dirt bike tracks or into the desert , not near public roads or in compounds. They both still at the age of 34 and 32 go to the track regularly and have taught the Grandkids to ride on mini dirt bikes with all the protective gear.It has become a family affair. edited by Nomad on 08/04/2014

No bad idea.Firstly it is illegal..think of the consequences if he knocks down and injures another child/adult.....you will be held responsible no matter how many parents you consulted. There have been any number of instances where people have been minding their own business driving within the law and have struck a person through no fault of their own and have landed in deep trouble.Imagine how it would play out if you actually have broken the law. There is a reason that 13 year olds do not qualify for a moped / car licence. I was almost run over by a 13/14 year old while walking in a gated community on the sidewalk. He sped away not a care in the world and there I was lying in a hedge, if I could have got hold of him I would have wiped the floor with his parents or whoever gave him the bike. If you are committed to him riding any sort of bike, take him out to a deserted part of the desert in the proper kit and let him have at it. To me this is one of those non negotiable issues. edited by Nomad on 08/04/2014

It's world war 3 when my DD visits as she often has to bring her pest of a dog with her and we have a cat who is terrified of him. The dog is a Jack Russell and chases cats all the time. Our poor cat vanishes for the day and is nervous for long periods after our DD has gone home taking her pesky mutt with her! Fortunately we have a large house and garden with plenty of shelter. A mother cat will definitely attack anything or anyone who gets too close to her babies. Oh Joyce I just had to add....I fostered a JR a while back, a tiny little thing who thought he was a Rottie...he had all my cats either up the barn rafters or at the top of trees. I played fireman up the ladder for months. Now have a huge Dobie rescue and the cats scare her off her bed so can relate to both sides ,attack cat and attacked cat:) edited by Nomad on 08/04/2014

So true Lolacat....as OP mentioned she is not a ' cat person ' but took the time to go back to investigate. You don't have to like a particular animal , there will always be the cat versus dog debate;), but animal welfare should be universal.....now I will get off my soap box.....:) edited by Nomad on 08/04/2014

Yesterday when I was walking my dog, he came to close to a street cat and it tried to scratch my dog. This morning walking the same route the same cat jumped on my dog screaming and properly attacking him. My dog is the sweetest thing and does nothing to defend himself, so I have to pull him away with the leash. Where can I report this cat, as I'm worried about diseases? Have children water gun - the small one - fill it with water, then take your own rout as usual, then once this particular cat try to approach him squeeze the water gun toward the cat, do the same for a week, then this cat will mind it's own business after that, just seeing the water gun - no need to spray anymore - will just remind that cat to stay away from your do. HTH Sorry but that is just plain mean.......the cat is only trying to do what ANY mother would....she is a street cat who knows what her life has been like up to now. Have a bit of compassion. Yes it's okey to use a spray bottle/water gun to discourage a cat from your garden or spraying etc. but totally unacceptable to harass this mom. OP has been given any number of positive options and from her follow up post she took the trouble to investigate further after her dog was attacked, hopefully this little family will have a happy ending. edited by Nomad on 08/04/2014

DR and Nomad, with all due respect, the GF of olden days (40 yrs ago) was superb. Today those foundations have crumbled and everything is about cost for them, they have cut so many corners now, it is a shell. I would never put myself through the torture just to cut costs. EK cabin crew are rude, but my flights are always on time. Absolutely agree it is a mere shell of what it used to be. As I said in my post the fancy frills may have been cut back ;) , I was referring to the issue of safety that had been brought up. As OP commented she can save 10 k, this may not be a big deal for some but for others living on a tight budget it can make all the difference. Just to add ,on time arrivals are no guarantee with a any airline, there are so many things that can cause delays.......;) edited by Nomad on 07/04/2014

i open and smell fabric softener.... dont see the issue really. I know it's tempting as some of the fragrances can be awful but while you may not actually put your nose onto the spout I have seem someone actually get softener on their nose and sneeze it all back into the tub....... EEEEEEWWWWWW and? its not like i am going to drink it - it's going in the washing machine where it will be diluted and rinsed in either 40 0r 60 degree water. I was merely making an observation.......about a fragrance sniffer who took a bigger sniff than they bargained for.Even though I too don't drink my fabric softener ;) I still prefer not to rinse my clothes with someone else's cooties....... edited by Nomad on 07/04/2014

I have no experience with brain tumour but recently heard that cannabis oil can cure such tumour with no need for surgery or chemo. Also heard about "defeat cancer now" book that shows how cancer can be reversed naturally by following some diets Sorry, but this is all utter, utter nonsense, like every other post that gets shared around Facebook claiming that some completely natural plant-based substance is a miracle cure for cancer that "Big Pharma" doesn't want you to know about. There isn't a shred of real evidence that any of those supposed treatments actually work. All those posts do is create entirely false hope and entirely unjustified suspicion of science-based medicine. It's just possible that some cancers may have regressed [b'>coincidentally[/b'> after the patient started taking whatever miracle cure supposedly worked for them, but coincidence is all that it is. Well said...

I yearn for the days when Gulf Air took me and my special boy on his jaunts. The crews we flew with were absolutely second to none with him and they will forever have my respect and admiration, as well as a place in my heart. We only stopped flying with them because of a timetable change and the stopover became too long and ss it is he will probably never fly again due to ill health. Safety wise - Gulf Air was the pilot training ground of the Middle East and the place from where the likes of Emirates/ Etihad/Oman Air got their pilots. Gulf Air pilots are way up there with the best. There engineers arent bad either :) and it was men of my husbands generation and aquantance who went off years ago to train in Scotland. The engineering foundation in GA is sound and was laid down years ago. Many of the original lot are retired now but equally many have moved to Emirates/itihad/Oman Air into very senior positions. GA brought me to this region almost 40 years ago. My son and son in law flew with them before coming home due to the unrest in Bahrain, never have I been afraid to board a Gulf Air aircraft and I certainly would never have got on one with my boy if I had concerns. Hth edited by DesertRose1958 on 06/04/2014 edited by DesertRose1958 on 06/04/2014 You said it all DR.......some of the happiest times of my and my family's life we owe to Gulf Air. DH flew for them many years back and with the training and experience he got from them, was able to operate all over the world at an extremely high standard. As you say most of the ME airlines today can thank Gulf Air as many of their original management and pilots originated there. The fancy frills may not be as plentiful but from a safety point of view DH and I would fly with them any day......

It irks me somewhat that I feel I now have to justify myself. I am far from a precious parent, but a new parent that is slightly confused with the amount of information we now have access to, and the conflicting advice we are given. I have no doubt that unless my DS had an allergy that he would of course survive a diet of porridge or whatever, but that wasn't my query. Whilst I am more than capable of making my own decisions, I wanted to draw on others experiences and thoughts, as per my original post. Most of the replies here have been very helpful, and I thank those posters for not using my thread to get on their soapbox or to have a laugh - get your own thread! The great thing about advice and opinions is you can take it or discount it. On a open Forum such as this you will always get those who agree and those who don't. Frankly I don't think you have to justify anything, there have been great responses and opinions if you don't agree with some ignore them. ;) edited by Nomad on 02/04/2014

This thread actually makes me laugh out loud. My 95 year old uncle was raised on thin gruel and was a pilot with the SAS during WW2. He is alive and well today and still plays bridge, cycles and walks every day. My 82 year old mother is out every day, was fed on watered down soup, potato and gravy mash and milk. I am 58 and was raised on Cow and Gate milk, mashed spuds with gravy and bananas and my own children were raised on a mix of baby milk formulas, home cooked food and UK baby food. We all survived folks! When did everyone become so paranoid about feeding children?? What a precious generation this has become sorry to say! Great post JoyceB.......my grandad had a bowl of porridge and a fry up every day done in lard, even the bread was fried, he lived to 95 was a WWI veteran and smoked a pipe. I was brought up in the middle of the bush on formula and when that ran out my gran fed me condensed milk until formula arrived. You made do with what you had to hand and we all survived.;) As someone said research changes constantly and how many of these researchers spend any length of time with a crying baby.......where has common sense been lost. edited by Nomad on 02/04/2014

Sorry should have been a bit clearer:) .....invasive as in it travels everywhere really quickly and can take over a bed really quickly spreading out. If you keep an eye on it and limit the spread you should be fine. The roots are not as deep or destructive as Damas ,what I would do is keep it confined to a specific area of the bed and chop off the roots that were invading other plants. It has more of a surface root system. Be careful it is also invasive and sends shoots everywhere, can be very difficult to get rid of. Consider Poinsienna ( sp )Flame trees, they do loose their leaves in winter but the display in the summer is worth it.

I too thought acupuncture was something of a fad. My Neurosurgeon suggested I try it for pain relief while awaiting surgery ,I have degenerative discs and severe spinal stenosis.Have suffered for 20 years with mild to severe unbearable pain and can honestly say that acupuncture has been a godsend in pain management. There have been days when I have so much pain that I can't lift my body out of bed and DH has to literally pick me up. Acupuncture has helped to ease these symptoms immensely ,something Physio and strong pain medication including a three year series of corticosteroid spinal injections every 3months ,have not been able to do. It works for some and not for others but don't knock those who have found relief with an alternative therapy. A friend of mine insists it is ' all in your head ' my answer I don't really care where ' it ' is if the treatment works. edited by Nomad on 31/03/2014

Recognising cultural differences is not the same as prejudice. I am sorry if you have experienced the latter. One of the biggest cultural differences I experienced when leaving my ' home country ' was the lack of queuing.....yes I know a can of worms.... Implying cultural difference per se is not necessarily pejorative, sometimes I wonder if some people go through life looking for opportunities to feel offended, either on their own account or as a general response to life. In answer to the OP's question, there are parents cheat everywhere, usually because they are more childish than their own children. ' Looking for opportunities to feel offended ' Wow you have hit the nail on the head LT... edited by Nomad on 30/03/2014

This is a very personal decision OP that only the two of you can make. I was an only child till age 14 and it was lonely I longed for a sibling , spent hours talking to my imaginary friends. I felt so strongly about it that when the time came planning our own family less than two was non negotiable ,from a decision point of view. My one son was adamant he wanted two as he and his brother have always been very close, he and DIL discussed this at length before getting married, however his brother doesn't want any kids at this point. He has had two relationships break up as a result but is adamant about not wanting kids. Having said that he adores his niece and nephew and spends loads of time with them, even takes GD to Sparks every week. Share your sentiments ShellAR our Grandkids adore each other, fight like mad at times but really love each other. I have them a lot and to hear the two of them chatting away ( when not arguing ! ) is just precious.

I am sorry but to rant about people giving you passed down clothing for your kids......... You should have the good grace to be thankful that you have the good fortune to be in a position to cloth your children. There are many who can't and would be over the moon if someone handed down clothing to their children. Why don't you tell those who are giving you the clothes to please stop if it annoys you that much ,sure that will go down really well. As another posted said pay more attention to buying a NEW car seat FAR more important than ranting about hand me down clothing. edited by Nomad on 03/03/2014

My grandmother, who grew up with help when it was still commonplace in the US, has been a fountain of wisdom regarding managing and getting along with help. One particularly good piece of advice she gave me was: never get involved with your help's money affairs. If you're worried about your maid's spending habits then the best thing to do is to lead by example. Just have casual conversations about how you and your DH are saving for retirement, a house or whatever, and how it's involving sacrifices so that's why you're not buying this or that. If she doesn't get the hint, it's not your problem. Just don't directly tell her how she should be spending her money. Sound advice TB . My mom tried to help our old gardener save,he had been with us for 25 years and was illiterate. His friend had stolen from him for years so mom opened up a savings AC for him.She would take him down to the bank every month to deposit his savings. After a year the 'friend' convinced him mom was working with the bank and stealing his money. She was so mad ,drove him down withdrew all the money which he promptly spent on a car that had no engine or wheels !!! His ' friend ' was going to teach him how to drive.........once they had 'fixed' the car. Needless to say the car was eventually towed from the yard when he died.... Mom had been supporting him for years even though he couldn't work any more, the ' friend ' was never seen again. I wouldn't get involved, you can guide and give advice but leave it at that. edited by Nomad on 01/03/2014 edited by Nomad on 02/03/2014
