My daughter's best friend failed her test because she was being too careful and going too slow (although observing the speed limit) because she was not going with the flow of the car and, therefore, dangerous. I kid you not! She was livid.

Hey, I stand corrected. I just noticed that it is, in fact, on Channel 121 on OSN (satellite direct as opposed to thru Du, etc). It should be on live very soon now.

We're celebrating tomorrow as everyone is busy with university and work. I'm thawing the turkey, and the homemade pumpkin pie is on the counter cooling. Enjoy your day. (If I had my choice, I'd be home right now getting my sneakers on, going thru the ads, and getting ready to go shopping.)

I don't think I have ever seen it here - live. you might catch parts by watching the OSN news station for the morning news shows or, possibly, it will come up on the internet later. We never get the olympics either -- it is so wrong.

I did not notice them at Safeway this morning, but you might try the Chocolate Shop at the Dubai Mall. Don't know name of the place, but the big candy shop there.

I happened to stop by Choithrams at Safa Park and they have Daem Bars or rather minatures there in a bag. Haven't seen them there for ages - so give it a whirl. I bought some myself.

Ponderosa (if it is still in business) might be able to handle the crowd but you might need to book in advance. They have an all you can eat salad bar/ice cream bar which allows them to eat what they want. With that large of group, you might be able to negotiate a better price. I have not been there for awhile, so I am not even sure its open still.

Appreciate all the comments, however, my hotmail is set up under US, and you simply can't just go to the US version by typing it in -- that's the frustration. When I did finally get to the US version, I marked it as using it for my homepage but, guess what, you click it again -- goes back to the local version automatically. So dang frustrating!

Just letting you know I picked one up this am from Carrefore at MOE. They had about 4 more left (at that time), and none would have been that big. Mine was about 5 lbs., and the biggest was probably 6 lbs. You might ask whereever you go if they have bigger ones in back. Mine was 80 Dhs. as it was (a Butterball).

Years ago I had a gas oven which drove me crazy. Love cooking on top but, for baking, forget it. The only advise I have is to cook in small batches on the side opposite the burner holes, and rotate the item 2 or three times. If it is still too hot, then open the door slightly while its baking. Other than that, you might look into a small counter top oven. I feel for you.

I am driving a rental at the moment (due to accident by hubby), and I was informed that they would charge me 5 dhs for each pass. However, my question (which I forgot to ask) was what about going through two (2) gates and only getting charged once. I am keeping a record of my salik passes. Has anyone settled up recently and been charged per gate or only the one time?

Majorie, I may be able to help you out. My front "garage" or carport is detaching from our house -- but I must tell you that it is mostly due to the fact as we have an underground water pipe bust which eroded the foundation (what foundation) which caused the carport to detach from the house. When Emmar was called, they said it was DEWA responsibility and, of course, DEWA said it was Emmar's. The best they would do was put steel plates attaching the carport to the house wall, but I am still left with cracks everywhere as well as a major crack in the main wall leading to my front door. Additionally, I have a wall/corner in my dining room which has been crumbling since before we moved in and was on our walk thru list. They had initially came out many times to fix the crumbling walls (obviously from some water problem), but after a few years -- said they would no longer be responsible -- we're on our own.

Wow. My husband was delayed from Gulf Air coming from Bahrain last night as well -- but only by about an hour. His flight was at 8:30 but work wrapped up early and he tried to get on any flights into Dubai from about 3:00 pm onwards. There was nothing -- all overbooked and most delayed. I say he should count himself lucky now. I am so sorry.

There is a new basmati rice on the market called Maharani from India which is specfically made for diabetics. My husband is diabetic and loves his rice--which has made it hard on him. He seems to tolerate this rice very well and its affects on his sugar level, so it is a real good thing. Better yet, it tastes and cooks like regular basmati rice. It's not always easy to find, but it is in a orange/blue and silver bag. It says on front "Rice Suitable for Diabetics" and, on the bottom, it says "Good for All". It comes in 1 or 2 kg and 5 kg packs. I have found it at Carreforre and the Union Cooperative fairly easily. Sometimes I have seen it at Choithrams--not sure about Spinneys. Stay away from bananas (another addiction of hubby's) and, in general, most diabetics tolerate noodles better than rice when you have the option. The sad part is that my husband was never one to eat sweets/candy/pastry/ice creams, etc. ever. He usually only ate fruit. When you become diabetic -- it's like you start to crave these things which makes it difficult. Since you are pre-diabetic, exercise is the key to keeping it away. Hope this helps in any way. Good luck.

I'll give it a whirl - this is the best way I know how. Go to Dierra and the Al Gharer Mall at the end of Rigga Road. It's on a corner. Turn right at that corner with Gharar Mall on your right side. Go straight up to and thru the Fish R/A. Continue straight til you come to a lighted intersection. Turn left at this intersection. You are now sort of entering the Naif area. On both your right and left will be all sorts of small shops mostly furniture upholstry, drapery, etc. Eventually you will come to major light intersection. Go thru the intersection and the first street on your left -- take a left hand turn. I think a Mosque or Police Station will around there. Anyway, once you make the left your will be going towards the old souk. You should run right into the old souk. There is mostly only on street parking (which is difficult to find), however, if you can make your way to the Al Manal Mall which is straight ahead, they have underground parking for money. I hope this helps in any way. I have not been there for a couple of years.

Look for the brand "crisco" at Spinneys or Choithrams or Safeway. It's a vegetable shortning. The blue tin is for cooking, and the yellowish tin in for baking. It is also sold in a package of three "bars" pre measured. Hope this helps.

Don't know about buying them for parts, but I always take my to Karama. If you come from the Shk Zayd Rd. and get off at the Trade Center R/A going towards the new Etisalat Building/Park on your right, go thru the next intersection which has Sana Fashions on the corner towards Bur Juman. The next actual road after that intersection (not the slip road), turn right and go to the next intersection. Turn right again. There are a couple (if not more) tv repair shops that have always done a good job for me at a reasonable cost. Hope this helps.

The best way for me to describe how to get there is to describe it as follows: If you are at the Main Post Office, turn right out of the post office and go to the end of the road by Aati Furniture Shop. Turn right. This is a road that joins up into Shk Zyd Road. As you are going straight, there is a slip road that leads into a furniture store (Hubazah or something like that) and there is a BabyShop. Get on that slip road and go towards the end. Hadi is just before the end of that slip road -- which turns to the right and leads you back towards the road that takes you to the Post Office again. I sure hope that helps. By the way, their towels are a good deal as well.

Appletiser - not all banks do. My first choice bank would not take it. So long as you deposit it and don't mind the long wait for it to clear - some banks will. Some banks will also charge you a fee for the privilege. My problem is that i had lost the check for a good while and then I was afraid that it would expire before I could get it deposited there or cleared from here. I wish I could use the excuse of going home just to make the deposit -- heavy sigh!

Ok, ladies, here's my latest adventure. I go to the bank on Thursday to deposit a US Government tax refund check made out to both husband and I. We both duly sign the back, mark it for deposit, and then ask them to deposit it into our joint checking account. Fill out the appropriate forms, tell me it will take approximately 14 days to clear -- no problem. Done. Wrong! Saturday morning, my husband gets a call from the Bank Manager telling us that we need to prepare a letter signed by both of us which basically says we are giving permission to deposit the check into our joint checking account. WTF? It truly defies logic. I think it is because I only signed the deposit form I think. Please, God, give me strength not to deck these people!

How does the Jim Will Fix It outlet work from ACE. Do you take things in to be fixed? The one thing I wish ACE would do is offer classes on DIY like they do back home. How to use tools, laying your own tiles, decorative painting finishes etc. I really miss that stuff.

I just noticed today that they are having their annual sale at AA Sons Warehouse sale in Barsha -- across from the Pan Emirates. I mention this because I bought a number of pieces of bakeware from them that I just love. I don't recall the name, maybe Bakers-ezz --but I am probably wrong. Anyway, the bakeware is gray but when you turn them over, there are pictures of all sorts of kitchen tools in a golden type color. I have just about everything they have put out and always buy more when they have the sale. The ones I have had and use frequently (at least 4 years) look just as good as the day I bought them. Once more, their price cannot be beat during the sale. (Mods--not connected with these people -- just a good bargain that I want to pass on). I will be going over the weekend to see if they have anything new.

It can be used but, because it is whipped or lighter, you will need much more to get a stronger cheesecake taste. You might be able to find something on internet for portions, but I have never used it myself.

For cheesecake, I usually use the Carrefore brand of sour cream. It's fairly inexpensive and does the job. However, if you want a good qulity sour cream, Knutson at Spinneys is very good, and at Safeway you can find a couple of different American brands as well as Canadian brands which are good as well. For a local brand beside Al Safa, I like the Nada brand -- its ok and fairly cheap price wise.

BBell is my favorite but if it is allowed to thaw (either in transit or because of supermarket freezer temps) it will form ice crystals and ruin it. One way I check is if the ice cream comes all the way to the top of the lid. There is a small clear, see thru area where you can actually see the ice cream. If it comes all the way to the lid - thats good. If its pulled away, then (most likely), it has thawed a bit or enough to allow ice crystals to grow. Next, touch the top and feel how soft or firm it is. If it is real soft, you'll feel it. I buy a lot of BBell but won't if any of the above is present. Hope this helps.

OK, now I am really not happy. My all time favorite snack cracker is Cheez It's by Keebler. I was told that they discontinued the product because of the cheese issue, but from the list bbcb gave, it states that Cheez Its are ok! Does anyone know who actually imports Keebler products here -- I am going to start tracking them down and hounding them! Oh, by the way, I always tell my family that I am "foraging for food" when I go shopping. It is usually a minimum 3 store limit. I am always exhausted by the end and almost always without something I needed because it is out of stock.

Safeway usually has a (very) small selection of sour creams more so that other shops. I have found most sour creams coming from the States (regionally dairy) to be just fine, Knutson (Spinneys) is very good and, in a pinch, the local Nada brand is ok. I have seen Rice A Roni (Safeway and LuLu's). My best advice is that if you see something that you use fairly regularly and its on the shelf, buy as much as you can as when its out it can be out for a long time. It's difficult because they are usually so pricey, but I have found it to be worth the hassle. I miss my Cheese It's terribly. I tried to track them down and was told that they believe they were taken off the shelf (after years) because of the cheese. Frustrating. Anything else you can't find - let us know.

No, not pork gelatine. At one time, a long time ago, they used to use lard in their pastry, but that has changed. They also keep the turkey bacon in the pork section too for some reason. So, if you want pop tarts or turkey bacon, then you need to go the pork section of Spinneys to find it. Sad but true.

I disagree about it being a result of poor circulation. I say this as I had it when I was around 4 or 5 years old. I remember crying my mother that I could not sleep because of it and, of course, become it did not hurt - she did not know what to do nor take it very seriously. Back then, I don't know if anyone knew it or had a name for it, and you did not go to the doctor unless it was serious. I learned a few months ago that my sister's daughter suffers from it as well.

I've had RLS since I was very young -- however did not know what it was until about 10 years ago as there is no way to describe it. Anyway, I don't have "pain" but rather a tingling in my legs which builds and builds until I must move my leg to ease it -- then it builds and builds again. Is that what other people have? Honestly, I have never asked the doctor for treatment as I don't get it too frequently anymore. I notice it flairs up when I travel on airplanes which is annoying. One thing a friend told me a few years ago is that "s**" is good for (before going to bed) at night and, frankly, I found this to be true. Afterwards I can usually sleep. Weird by true.
