Unless you want to hire someone for a couple if hours via an agency, you will have to provide her with full sponsorship, including visa and medical. Going rate for salary is anything between 2000 and 3000 Trustworthiness and reliability are hard to assess. Use you instinct and general people's knowledge.

Have you ever thought that most maids get Friday off. So by you giving her a "day" off during the week, she may feel isolated as all her friends work? Also, IMHO you are being unreasonable by "allowing" her only 10 hours off. Really don't understand. Back home most people cope with kids, jobs etc without a maid 365 days a year. Why do you feel you can't cope on a Friday? I could have written this. By the way, why do most EW tend to think that fellow posters are good employers? Personally I think many are just as bad as the ones they are so happy to judge.

Wow, you have the exact timings I want/desire etc. I'm with Lina and Angela, both one hour was all they could fit in. How about you? Maybe we should combine after all. Reason I'm running through the courses is that I took lessons before. But classical, so now I'm struggling with the modern. Finishing beginners 2 and will do 3 next month. Maybe after summer we could join in intermediate?

I take private one - on - one arabic lessons at ALC and i think they are good. Me too, they're good. I want to move quick, and their class schedules don't fit my timings. However I would prefer a small group, like 2 or 3, as it would then be more interactive. what level are you doing? will be happy to do a two person lesson if timings and level suits. Was thinking the same. I'm somewhere between beginners 3 and intermediate.

I also want to mention that I pay her overtime in addition to her salary for whenever she has keep an eye on the little one at night when we are out. And at night she no real work but just keep an eye on him incase he wakes up. I was just calculating I have paid her overtime equals to a months salary in the past one year. I know most people don't pay their nannies/maid overtime when they are out socially. So I think I have compensated her very generously overall. in addition to that to again give her an extra months salary ?? You're comparing apples and pears. If you already have your answer, then why post the question in the first place?

Something similar happened to us. Taxi driver refused to let us in when he heard where we were going. We got the taxi number, phoned his company and filed a complaint. Complaint was followed up within 2 weeks, Taxidriver was fined 300 dhs.

I too fostered a dog and in less than a week decided I had to adopt her! Which is why I have considered.......but decided against. I grew up with dogs and could never give a dog up. Keeping it is not an option as it would just be unfair to force our lifestyle and travelling on a dog.

I can only tell you wat I would do, which is #4. My priority would always be being with each other and spending as much as possible time together. In the end a loving family defines any child, more then any school will ever be able to provide.

This discussion has been held a couple of times. Normally she would go home for a month, but you would pay her for that month, as of course you pay her 12 months a year (not 11). She has chosen to work during her Holliday, I assume you are oke with that. So IMO you should pay her extra for the month she is now working.

It seems as if you are all returning items on a regular basis? Why? Just think twice before you buy it. Saves you a lot of frustration, as well as having to drive back there (on these apparently dangerous Dubai roads) in the first place.

You are not obligated to take the bus. You might consider taking a taxi. Apparently metered runs Abu Dhabi- Dubai are around 200 dhs.

Mustard, did you post your opinion on the Doha thread as well? If it is illegal, it is illegal. But the maid in question may be very happy with the arrangement, assuming all ladies would pay her a decent salary for each day. We had an agreement like this in our previous location, where there was no sponsorship etc. 3 families would each hire the same maid for 2 days. Worked out perfectly for all, including the maid, who made a lot more money then had she been hired via an agency or full time with one family.

No, it is not legal. First, I assume is is under somebody's sponsorship (for the days he is already working) and is therefor not allowed to work for anyone else. Second, from the employer side, it is not allowed to have anyone working in your house unless under your own sponsorship or via an agency.

Oke, so she's been with you only 2 months, she deserves a second chance. However I would not let her lock her room (after all, she is allowed to enter your rooms). And I would not accept her telling me she won't be home the time I tell her too. Threatening with the police is not helpful, it will make her suspicious. So if she isn't home in 5 minutes, let her know that this is the first and last time you accept her talking back to you and that you expect her to do as you say. Don't talk about the consequences, next time just send her packing. You will loose all your visa fees. On the other hand, I treat our maid with lots of leniency, but that's us. Each to hs own. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 13/04/2013

The company does not no I am pregnant and I have not told them because they did not ask what should I do To be honest, if it would be my company, I would fire you as soon as possible after I found out. I would not have a problem hiring a pregnant employee (if she was married), I would however have a major problem with a new employee who lied or withheld information during the recruitment phase.

And/or ask her to find another sponsor. Set a deadline, e.g. 2 or 3 months from today. Agree with Anon, be honest about your reasons for "getting rid" of her (not a very nice thing to say really, not a good recommendation either). If she doesn't find one, buy her a ticket and send her back home.

There not many beach hotels actually located at the beach. Depending on the budget, she could try Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Hilton Beach Hotel, Meridien, Sheraton. The usual suspects really.

I do give cash in lieu for air ticket. However the cheapest ticket to Manilla, not all the way to her home town. And I check on the price about 9 months before end of contract, as the tickets will be much cheaper if booked ahead.

Oke, sorry Omoten, maybe start another thread. Back to Blueblogger and her maid. Blueblogger, what happened in the end. Dd she show up? Have you reported her absconded? I always find it awkward when someone needs Urgent Advice, gets it from here, and then doesn't post back. Hope you got it all sorted out.

Hi Lily, we lived in Geneva, so cannot comment on Zurich details. However a few things go for the whole country: expensive, expensive, expensive.... Everything. Housing, schools, groceries, furniture etc. Public transportation is excellent, you can set your clock on it. Always only a step away from the fresh mountain air. But many rules and regulations, covering everything from doing laundry in your apartment building to crossing the street.

I asked this question when they issued my E-Gate card, 2 months ago. Valid they said. Sounds logical: how does the card know you've changed passports? It's a stand alone system, so I will just keep on using it and see what happens.
