PLEASE don't take any risks with your health. I know the insurance premium can be a huge stretch on a budget, but just imagine the costs if something really bad would happen and you would be in need of direct specialized attention. You cannot always control what hospital you will be taken, nor are you sure that a possible condition can be properly attended to in one of the government hospitals. You may be young and healthy now, but believe me, any illness will always take you by surprise. And once diagnosed, no insurance will take you on, so then what?

Look at the "Christmas Bonus" thread. Some call it a bonus, others a Christmas gift. As to the "why": Because it's Christmas, that's why. Muslim people will do it at Eid, Christians at Christmas. Even in Holland I would buy my hairdresser and cleaning lady a gift for Christmas. Her I give money (with a tiny gift) as I know that will be most appreciated. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 23/12/2012

Mum2girls, I have a totally different view. I have never encountered so many extremely friendly waiters as in restaurants in Dubai. True, they may not always understand you, but they mean well. And when I enter a shop I give the sales people a big smile and ask if it is oke to just look around. I've never been followed around. Most people I see shopping or having dinner wouldn't even look twice to a salesperson or waiter.

I guess the way a thread about rude behavior towards people in the services industry changes into a thread where EW complain about those same people just says it all!!

The only "norm" would be the one month paid vacation at the end of every contract year. If you want to give a bonus, that 's entirely up to you. I'm happy with my current maid and give her 500 dirhams at Christmas and 500 dirhams for her birthday. She's over the moon with that.

"Ordinary people" make way too much money, all of a sudden they can afford maids and gardeners and before you know it they think they are superior to people in the services industry who often make 12 hour days for a few dirhams.

B2B, for me now that my ski-bum days of only wanting to ski are long gone, my preference is for nice skiing in a nice mountain village atmosphere with nice restaurants. So I prefer to ski in Switzerland and Austria rather than France ! I totally support mum2girls on this one. The atmosphere in Swiss and Austrian ski resorts us so much nicer then in France, and in some of them you can combine atmosphere with fantastic challenging skiing and high quality lifts as well. In Switzerland, be prepared to pay, as it is hugely expensive. Many villages are car free zones which I find a big plus. Best skiing in Zermatt, Saas Fee, Verbiers and St. Moritz. In Austria check out Ischgl and St. Anton. Accommodation will probably be similar as in Switzerland, but all other costs will be slightly less.

Nippy, don't do anything without speaking to a lawyer. You must have spoken to one by niw, as many other posters have advused you to as well?! He/she will advise you to stay or leave, what to do about court on Thursday, how to manage finances, kids schools etc. Everyone on this board means really well, but unless they are lawyers nobody really knows what the consequences to what actions will be. There are a lot of things I would want to say as advice, but it would be gut feeling and of no help to you at all. Please do go speak to a lawyer ASAP.

Strangely, I've also see antique Arabic jewellery in frame shops, such as Hammadco in Karama. Most of which is fake. Your best bet would be the Blue souk in Sjarjah, ir even better the jewelry souk in Muscat.

I decided to get a cleaner for the first time and asked my building conceirge (I live in Downtown too) which cleaning agencies are used in the building and I have been using an agency called City Maid Services which I find really good and I get the same girl everytime and she does 2 hours in the afternoon for me. Highly recommend the agency and I have only been using them for 3 weeks. How lovely and helpful of you to come on EW and make this your first post :\:

I bought it in Holland, only through certified dietitians. There are however websites that sell them as well. Don't know about delivery in Dubai. Try googling bio-hcg

I have, very succesfully, used Bio-HCG. It is a "copy" of pregnancy hormones, with natural ingredients only. As opposed to many other diets I tried HCG did control my hunger and cravings. I did it in combination with exercise. You are NOT counting calories with this diet, it is a matter of combining (low carb) fruits and vegetables with lean proteins. Sugar, fat, carbs and dairy are excluded for the first 30 days. Woman are said to loose max. 8% of their weight during the first month. By no means is it a miracle product. It is all about changing your lifestyle and eating habits. But using the drops helped me achieve that, whereas all my other attempts, with or without diet products, utterly failed. I lost about 20 kilos in 4 months and manage to maintain weight and lifestyle.

Do you expect her to work from 6 am to 6.30 pm without a break? Does she have to clean the whole house between 4.30 and 5.30? Will it involve washing and ironing as well?It really depends on what is is exactly that you will be doing yourself, but in general 12 hour days without a break seems a bit stiff to me.

Good for you, having stood up to her. I know how convincing some maids can be. She'll sulk for a few days, but if she sees it won't get her anywhere, she is most likely to come around. Hope that at least for the duration of the contract she'll return to the maid you were happy with. Good luck to you. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 09/12/2012

Anouja, keep in mind she's only five. This is not a birthday she will remember for the rest of her life. So pick some fun things for the girls to do, but don't go over your budget. The girls will enjoy themselves anyway. Don't worry.

Neat-Freak, you are way to kind. Don't waste another thought on this lady. She is not fulfilling her contract, so you are not obliged to pay for her flight home. Just tell her that when she asks again. Let her and her husband figure it out for themselves, it is not your concern. If I were you I wouldn't let her out if my sight until she boarded her plain. Good thing you still have her passport. Make sure you know if and how to cancel her visa.

Ahlan it is! Thanks all :). Oopsiedaisy, I've always found Ahlan to be reasonably quick, apart from when my MIL came through. But then if they'd carried her through on a golden chariot she'd probably have complained so I don't think that's a good example. :)
