Can't help you with dr's names. But since you mention you don't neccesarily want to jump into surgery, why don't you try find a good fysiotherapist simultaneously. They are very likely to be able to help you. In Dubai especially, my experience is that most dr.'s do jump into surgery. Every stitch goes directly into their pocket.

Fully agree with you Lou. Only in Dubai people seem at a complete loss without their nanny. All over the world families take their vacation without nanny's. They cope, why wouldn't you? A family holiday is just that: a family holiday. Time for working parents (doesn't matter if you are a SAHM) to spend quality time with their kids. For me a nanny doesn't fit into that picture. If you and DH want some time to yourselves, take a weekend break whilst in Dubai and let the nanny take care of the kids. Surely you can have fun with just the 4 of you for 10 days?

Saami: So you mean not to sponsor them at all? Don't the other agencies take the majority of the money? I heard they are now at 2700 and the maid gets only 1000. The thing that I am afraid of is that I would feel sorry for her and give her more money. This would mean I end up paying more a month! So difficult to choose! That is true Akai. I recognise your dilemma, went through the same struggle. Because of the above mentioned I opted to sponsor myself. So far so good. There a lots of good experiences, you tend to hear about the bad ones. You will have to rely on your knowledge of people while searching for the right maid. Make a list of requirements and set the boundaries from the first time you speak. You are the employer, you call the shots. Good luck.

Ikea has an extremely liberal exchange policy, so if you take it back it will be replaced (again and again and again). That said Ikea's concept is DIY, low prices and service accordingly. So they will not come to your house.

I fully agree with other posters, one should make it clear from the beginning that no advances will be granted. HOWEVER: In some cases there are indeed hospital bills to be paid. Fact is that the maids are expected to help their families out, thus, if you decide not to give an advance they are very likely to go to one of the many loansharks that operate illegally in their community. They will then have to pay large sums of interest, which in the end will lead to even larger debts (and as her sponsor it will always come back to haunt you). So the practical thing to do, at least for me, would be to ask for a copy of the hospital bill. Depending of the amount to be paid, set up a scheme to deduct x amount from their monthly salary, preferably for a maximum of 3 months. Keep in mind that while living in your house they can really make do with a very small monthly amount, if live-out they will need more (but are likely to earn more as well). Yes, I have done this with my maid who at that time was working for me 4 months. She paid it all back and is still with me. She has even asked me to keep deducting a part of her salary and keep it as her savings (apparently when she doesn't have acces to it she can say no to her family, whereas if she keeps it herself she is likely to send it home, thus not being able to save it for her (and her children's) own future).

Whisk it up with a little bit of sugar, put some butter in a frying pan, fill the pan with about 1,5 cm off the egg white, and fry slightly on one side only. When it's warm all through put on a plate and fold up (like a calzone pizza). Yummie.

I never went there, but if it was me on my wedding anniversary I would definitely choose some other restaurant. There are plenty of excellent restaurants here, and as you say, you don't want to feel rushed on an evening that is supposed to be about good food and romance. And the place will probably be packed, how romantic is that?

So she hasn't taken leave for two years? wow. I used to think that too. Thing is however, that when they travel home the (extended) family expects them to bring gifts and pay for everything, after all, working and living in Dubai, they must be filthy rich :\: All their hard earned savings will go up in flames. So many tend to go home as little as possible in order to be able to really safe money and eventually go home to built a better live for their own family.

Creek Park. Enter at Gate 4 and keep walking straight until you're right at the grassy area infront of the creek. Absolutely gorgeous views of the creek, Park Hyatt, golf & yacht club, etc. Quite frankly, the view is so nice that I'm shocked that they haven't torn down the park and built some overpriced resturant there yet! Shhhh, don't start given them ideas ;)

By asking her she will indeed think you're accusing her. Most people would. But you seem 100% sure she did it, so basically you are accusing her. The agency may be covered by insurance, but you can count on it they will take the money out of her salary as well. So it's really up to you how you handle this, what would you like to see happen? edited by Oopsiedaisy on 28/11/2012

I'd like to tell you that for your age you should be a bit more respectful. I think you've lived quite enough already to learn basic rules of conducts such as turning off your phone, or at least put it in silent mode while you are at a movie screening. You even picked up the phone several times and had conversations bothering all the rest of us who were trying to watch the movie. Next time, if you are not interested, just leave the place, but don't ruin other people's movie. Thanks Why didn't you tell her in her face yesterday? I did. But she just didn't care. :( Wow, that's shocking. Next time take DesertRose's way of dealing. :)

As a matter of fact I do. But judging from the threads of the last few days I may be the only one. Keep your eyes on the road and check your mirrors, know where you're going so no hesitating and endangering or annoying others, a decent speed (not to fast, but certainly not to slow) and everyone should be fine. I have driven in city's where driving is far worse than in Dubai.

We ended up calling some manager, kindly informed him that a security check was not listed on their website as a criteria for obtaining a CC, and that if he was going to insist we would gladly take our business elsewhere. I prefer the authentic BBQ taste of a charcoal BBQ. You will however have to really learn how to use it. It is a lot harder to contol the heat, so you might end up with burned meat in the beginning. But after you gained some experience, no gas BBQed meat will ever taste as goos as a coal BBQed meat.

Hmm, I would think it's too late now, As far as I know potential bruises have to be treated before they become visible. After that you just have to sit them out, But I'ld be very interested in other suggestions since I am quite susceptible to bruises. DH with loose hands, same as you Nomad ;)

It seems to vary month to month. The charges are estimated remotely I am told so there is little that can be done about it. Even over the summer when we weren't here, the bill was the same amount!!!!!! But do they ever correct the estimate? Surely in the end you should only pay for your actual consumption?

Being an expat is challenging for your relationship. Doesn't matter if it's Dubai or any other country. Being away from family and friends, having only each other to rely on may either break your marriage, or it will make it stronger. Reading your latest post it seems to me he has already checked out of the marriage. Doesn't really matter if divorce is no option for you. It takes two to make a marriage work. If I were you I wouldn't move to Dubai.

I think they'd be tough to juice - I make my own by bringing 8 cups of frozen or fresh cranberries to a boil in the same amount of water for about 20 minutes. I then mash them up a bit with a potato masher, then put them through a fine sieve (I actually use cheese cloth) and squeeze all the liquid through. It is very tart, so I add a few drops of stevia to take a bit of the edge off. The original recipe called for 1/4 cup of lemon or orange juice - I don't bother. Thanks, that does sound a lot easier then juicing! Do you have a Year's supply of fresh cranberries in the freezer, or can you buy frozen ones all year round?
