Why do teachers subject parents to this??? They are not subjecting parents to anything. Just trying to make education fun every once in a while.

Which is why you should never use a wooden chopping board, but plastic or glass only. And change your kitchen towels or cloths daily, wash at min. 60 degrees. All advice given to people with a damaged immune system, but sensible for all of us.

I would have to say Roger Moore. I loved that he didn't take himself too seriously and added a touch of humor to James Bond.

To my knowledge the healthcard is pretty useless when it comes down to it. I didn't want to take any risks and got our maid private insurance. AED 2500/yr. @desertrose, what a horrible situation. Take care.

To scroll: use 2 fingers (took me some time to figure this out) To edit a single word: enlarge slightly and there you go To OP: I'm addicted to my IPad, for Email, surfing and reading, but it doesn't completely replace my laptop/desktop Ooh.. Okay, how do I get in within a single word? Apologies to OP for digressing. Just hold your finger "in the word" for 2 seconds.

I can't scroll down to add comments if a quoted post goes beyond the text box screen on iPad - can anyone else do this on iPad? Getting in between a word to edit just that single word on an iPad is... #*%€}# ... How do you all survive with iPads? I'm going back to my MacBook....! Hi Favfi, I'm originally from The Hague, living in Dubai at the moment. Apart from Wassenaar, which is a suburb of The Hague really, the city itself has lovely neighborhoods for expat families with children. The most popular one is Statenkwartier with beautiful townhouses from the early 1900's. Lots of green, lovely shopping area, international schools and a 10 minute walk from the sea. Since I'm renting out our own house I have a lot of knowledge in that area as well. If would be happy to have a chat, so if you are interested let me know.

I have very good experience with Mohanlal Vallabhdas&Bros in the old Gold Souk. If you enter from the Corniche, turn left on the main street of the Souk, it will be at the corner on your left, after about 100 mtrs. Ask for the owner: Amit.

Guess you cannot force her to go. As the other posters said, she is here to save money. Going home will cost them a bundle. All their relatives think they are rich and expect gifts, treats etc. And here she can keep an eye on your house.

I understand your point. Me too, but sometimes I think people are too sensitive and looking for an argument or debate on everything. Plenty of very pale white kids are teased for their complexion. There are many product for spots are uneven complexion, etc. etc. Why must we always look fir the negative in things?

Hi again JPS1, wow, I must say you are really organised with preparing for the maid. Well, assuming she would live-in, it would depend on her accommodation really. Some have their own little kitchen where they like to cook their own food. Others are allowed to cook their own food in the family kitchen, and others will eat with the family or the kids. As with the general duties, this is really up to you to decide. But most of the girls are from the Philipines or Sri Lanka, they, just like us, like their own food. But you would definitely NOT gave to cook her meals. If she lives in you would take her shopping with you, and buy the stuff (mainly noodles and rice with vegetables) she cooks for herself. As for toiletries and phone allowance, depends on what you are paying her. I would think about 250 AED a month? But there will be other ladies who can advise you in this one. I lay one lump sum each month. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 05/06/2012

Just recently I had taken my 2 teenager girls for HD (ahhhh you thinking, 200 dhs a pop for young girls madness ) Best spend money again my eyebrow stylist consolidated us and shaped their brows beautifully. And I do feel better knowing I willn't have 2 plucked to death teenagers in the bathroom. They don't need to go every 6 weeks but twice a year maybe or special occasions. "Michelle", My lovely Eyebrow stylist. "You rock" :-) Teenagers? Really?!

I would say that as her sponsor/employer you decide which duties are important for you. Assuming you are not working, I would think that a full time maid can manage cleaning the house, as well as help out with the twins and do the occasional cooking. My maid also dies the washing and ironing. With respect to working hours, same thing, you decide. If you need her for long days, make sure she gets some off-time in between. Typically they 1 or 2 days off every week In the beginning all will take some extra time, but once you've settled into a routine I'm sure you"ll be oke. When interviewing make sure you make it clear what you expect of her.

Basically any shop in the Gold Souk that sells diamonds can have it re-valued at the official certification place here in Dubai. Costs are 100 dhs. I bought a new diamond ring just yesterday, wanting to sell the old one, but had lost the certificate. I won't be asking for the new certificate, since the guy who sold me the new diamond will buy the old one anyway, but should I keep the ring, I would be able to get a new certificate,

It's not and I don't care about piercing ears :). I care about babies in car accidents because DH used to work in the ambulance and the things he's seen have chilled me to the bone. If anyone witnessed first hand the aftermath of an unbuckled child in a crash they would rush out and buy the best seat on the market. They don't see it though, and they don't see adverts either, so I think a lot of people don't fully comprehend what happens. If DH has worked in an ambulance, shouldn't he be the one to "educate" his own brother? Surely he could talk to him and explain?

HSBC wanted us to do the same, they even blocked our CC. This is 2 months ago. I went on their website and checked the criteria for the CC. Since we met all criteria, and there was no mention about writing cheques on the website, I wrote to the account manager that there was no need for us to write that cheque and that I would be more then happy to discuss it with her manager. CC was deblocked immediately and never heard from her since. I believe the cheque writing thing became standard a few years ago, when people fled the country leaving all sorts of debts behind, but with things picking up again, there is really no need. But apparently the banks keep trying. You just have to refuse.

Oopsiedaisy, very polite of you !! But thanks for the suggestion of Plug-Ins, I need to find out where they are and call them. Yes, you're right, but my point was, just because you cannot find cartridges there's no need to yell NEVER to buy such and such. That's not really fair IMO. Plug Ins is in Festival City, opposite Ikea. Good luck.

how is it i don't see any of this ? i smile lots and always get smiles back - generally i find people are friendlier than they are at home, especially shop staff !! I have exactly the same experience. And not only from shop staff. Also locals. Smile at them, they'll smile back at you. So much friendlier then in my home country, where people hardly acknowledge one another.

Kohlrabi is a cabbage. You can get it at Spinneys. Even works as a healthy substitute for mashed potatoes. It has the same texture.

You can buy a kohlrabi, slice it very thin, cook it for a couple of minutes and there's your healthy substitute for pasta. Or do the same to a couple of courgettes. Or a mix of both vegetables.

Or create a more shady p,ace somewhere else in your garden, where she can move her kittens too. You could put some food and water there to attract her. But the Joice's suggestions sounds like a good option. Just make sure to always have some water and food for her. And eventually she will find her way out of your garden and move her kittens. She came in didn't she?

Unfortunately thus is just one of the facts of life here! Other then complaining to the manager of the supermarket where you bought your pizza, there isn't much you can do about it (I think). I had the same a month ago, but was sooooo craving for Pizza that I bought it anyway, ate it, and survived. We do tend to overreact a bit I believe.
