I used Aida from Twinnet Real Estate (in Januari). She specializes in Jumeirah / Umm Sequim area, and was really helpful. Spoke to her the other day. She did however mention that currently there is a higher demand than offer off Villa's in this area. Give her a call anyway. She will not keep you hanging, will not show or advertise property she cannot rent out, and was honest! Her number: 0501640484

There are those very cool pieces of local artwork done by peas in a pod, reminder of Dubai with camels etc Those are gorgeous too! I went to their workshop last week, after reading about them on this forum. Am having some pieces made as we speak. Taking them home as baby gifts (the pink and blue camels are too cute!)

Given her passion for jewelry design I would definitely go for a replica (or real, depending on the budget) piece of bedouine jewelry. Not to wear, but in a nice frame. Saw loads of them in the Antique Museum in Al Quooz (framing department). It is local and a permanent reminder, both of which leaving gifts should be about (IMO).

If she's turning 7 she's old enough to be told that it is too late to change her mind now, and that you already have it all organized.

I find it annoying. As far as I'm concerned the maids section is for exchanging advice (and juicy stories ;)) Sorry, just my opinion. Oh. I was under the impression it was the section for us to squabble amongst ourselves over salaries and moral issues? My mistake :D Isn't that the same :):)

IMO it is a very good idea to have her pay half the bill. Because it is a huge amount to her, it may make her think twice about her actions in the future. And if you notice improvement in her behavior, you can always refund the 100 lateron, as an extra bonus or something.

Then don't ask where to find *anything* on the forum. You can narrow the focus on the forum right down to the point where there is nothing to talk about. And then it gets boring and people find other outlets. It's already slowed down markedly from what it was a year or two ago. And it doesn't hurt you in the slightest to skip passed a request for a maid. Even the mods have repeatedly posted that the maids section is NOT meant as a classifieds for finding a maid. Read the forum rules!!

Hi mymy, welcome to Dubai. Please check the classifieds section on this forum for hiring a maid. Quite often you will find a maid recommended by her previous family. Not a guarantee, but a good start. Good luck!

As far as I'm concerned this forum is not about finding maids, unless you mean the classifieds section. It bothers me to see so many adds on the maids forum, it's not meant for that. On the other hand, if we are talking about the classifieds, I fully agree: let's give accurate recommendations in order to spare other EW's our own agonies. However, same as in "real life" and "real companies": many are willing to tell a white lie if they want to get rid of an employee. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 28/05/2012

Sanddy Dogg, until she has left the country she is still 'under your name'. Anything she does is your responsibility. Yes, it should be fine that she stays with you, but no, they are not allowed to work for someone else until they have a pink slip issued by new employer. Technically you are right, but since it doesn't always work out this way in practice, the "intention" will prove to be good enough. But it is of no importance to Sandy Dog, the maid will be returning home.

I would assume it is. It will be the safest place for her to be wouldn't it? I don't know the rule on this one, but in line with the fact that she is allowed to stay with her future sponsor, I would say it should also be allowed to stay with her former sponsor.

Yes, she has 30 days. After that every single day will cost her (or her new employer) 50 AED. We hired a maid during those 30 days. She worked for us, we paid her, but couldn't start her visa process because ours hadn't been processed fully yet. Since we needed more then the 30 days, we also paid for the "overstay". According to our PRO that's oke, as long as you intend to hire her. As soon as her documents for the new visa are filed, you won't get charged for overstay anymore. In our case it took them 2 more months to arrange all the papers, medicals etc. but at least she didn't have to leave the country in between. So she can work in the 30 days after cancellation, provided it is with her new prospected family (even if on trial).

We faced the same dilemma. Not really enough work for a full-time, but hesitant about getting someone from an agency. We did the math: 3 full days via agency will cost appr. the same as a full-time maid. We now have a full-time, but live-OUT lady and are very very happy. We have full flexibility, she comes when and as often as we need her, and in her spare time she is at her home, studying and taking care of that place for her roommates. I know many on this board do not approve of this "letting the maid loose", but it works for us and for her. We do not have "regular days" and sometimes I call her last minute to come or stay away, so I do check on if she is working for someone else. But she's really lucky to have found a job like this, and there's no way she would risk loosing it.

Twinings jasmine green tea. Second that for "supermarket" tea. However the teashop in Dubai Mall (underneath the waterfall) does have real tealeaves and their Green Jasmine Queen tea is the best!

Its exactly the same here when the temperature dips to 11 deg c at night in the winter and we all freeze. 11 deg c in the UK is normal but here we have no heating, no carpets and the houses are made to keep out the heat and retain the cooler air. But then WE are all complaining, and it makes the headlines HERE. So really, why is everyone so upset about a headline in some other country.

30 days is allowed period of "overstay" after a visa has expired. So if she really has a 3 months visa (Check her passport!) you would have 4 months to arrange it all, which is more then enough. The whole process is indeed quite straightforward. The visa run is not always necessary. We just paid an extra amount to immigration (but that was in Sjarjah).
