Not sure if there such a thing in the Maldives as it tend to be quite expensive. However, if you do fund one, let me know because I'd like to go back. It's trulyparadise on earth! On the same subject, anyone can suggest a kids friendly destination to travel to from Dubai? I want to avoid long travelling as we have our share when wetravel to canada in the summer. My boys are 4 and 6.

I cant believe it. I just ordered on Amazon 3 days ago, relieved and happy that I was finally going to be able to access quality at a reasonable price(even with shipping costs) and my order was cancelled!!! I spent to much time researching the right toy as I wanted something sturdy of good quality, and so I ordered the Melissa and Doug Medieval castle. Now, if I want to reorder they've increased the price by 30%, in pounds!!! I really hate this place. Why cant we have access to the same amount of quality then in other countries, yet the place is full of malls...

Forget it guys. I'm ordering online. Did 5 different stores in one mall yesterday and thats enough to send me virtual shopping. I found a really good one and much cheaper then the ELC one (What a rip off). I just find it so easier, you even have all the comments from previous buyer, which you can't get if you shop in a store... Thks for helping though! Oreo

Dear Scruffles, I hear you in every possible way. I've been debating this ever since I left work for my first baby. Now I am back at work but only because it's part time, and I'm able to go pick up the kids when they finish shcool. It's hard to juggle work, mum's repsonsabiliites and the rest but you also need something for yourself as your kids are growing older. Mine are only 4 and 6 and I'm only working when they're at school, so technically, the only time I'm missing out on is time for myself and other chores in the house (mainly cooking and food shopping as I have a maid). It dempends on your own situation too: travelling time to go to work, to pick up the kids at school, is your hsuband mainly based in DUbai or does he travel a lot for work, are you able to delegate more to your maid? Would you consider hiring a driver? How much holidays your husband gets? Hope to help your thinking progress! OReo

I'm afraid to say but Dubai just does not cater for working mums. Most school finish early with little possibility of after school care/activities and loads of holidays. You may find a temporary solution by using a daycare but once they start school, you have issues. Not only you have to be the school bus driver, but you also have loads of homework, school lunches, and who's going to take your kids to afterschool activity that the school cannot provide...YOU! So this is why after 4 years of searching for a job in Dubai, I have decided that partime work, (If you're lucky enough to find it) is the only possible solution. (BTW I do have a maid!!!!)

Try the, 'muscat buy and sell' page on facebook, as well as the offical opera house page on facebook, though Im not sure tickets are allowed to be re-sold the latter. I know Im repeating myself and people may be fed up of hearing it but :) The only way to ensure tickets for anything is to buy ahead for the entire season the day the tickets go on sale. Dont listen to people saying oh, there's no need to be buying 2/3 months ahead etc because the reality is that within days of going on sale most things are sold out and whats available thereafter isnt available for long. Also by buying for the season you get substantial discounts which can mean up to a third off your total bill for the season. It really is a fantastic night out and I hope you get your tickets. I would help if I could but I dont have any spare. And if you do manage to get here :) its become obvious as the performances have gone by that people are getting into the spirit of things and really dressing up for the night is the way to go. HTH :) I've MISSED you, where have you been? xxx PS: look out for me in your local C4 next month...I'll be the fish out of water looking one :) Hi :), I've been thinking of you and wondering if you are here yet. Things have been hectic at home for months now due to my boy not doing too well at all - his list of problems just keep on growing. But never mind cos it will all work out well in the end :) I wont look out for you in Carrefour cos I'd like to have you to the house when you get here :) I'm away in a couple of hours for a fortnight but as soon as I get back I'll be in touch. In the meantime I hope your move goes smoothly and that I can help you to settle in. xxxxxxxxxx Hi DesertRose, Would have bought tickets years in adavnce if I knew. I just found out about it. Will definitely buy for next year in advance as I've always wanted to see swan lake for Christmas Oreo

I have never heard of this in my kids school. I'd be very wary of Raffles, with the amount of children they put in one class in their nurseries, it does not look good. Check also the nursery/school discussion board.

This is very strange especially when you know that you cannot go into the coffee shop without first opening the gate, passed the playaera, and be willing to have lunch with so much noise. THe coffee shop is supposed to be a secured place and a staff is supposed (but not always) to be at teh gate to let mums of kids in. I am very surprised by this and to be honest I find the amount of people in there a bit insane some times. I've been there twice and came out iwht a big headache. And while we are there, if you attend a b-day party, you better check your kids in the stairs because those are the most dangerous stairs I've seen...

Hi SQ. I hear you. I have been looking for a job for the last 2 years without success when I used to be one of the best employee at my old jobs, getting the best bonuses and salary raise. OK, I've been looking for part time employment, but I find here it is very difficult, has it is a man's land for jobs, with no union and no regulated hours, and plenty of cheap labour who are happy with next to no pay and long working hours. It really scares you up and you wonder how it will be if this phenomenon spreads to the west in a few years from now. I am a member of a professionnal order and I need to pay big membership and insurance fees every year, even if I don't work, and still have to do 40 hours of training every year. I can't help but to think what a waste of talent mothers are here, because we could all work when our kids are at school and our skills for sure could be usefull, but employers prefer to hire unefficient staff who will work from 10 to 10 with plenty of cigarette, coffee, lunch, water cooler breaks... so discouraging..

Sounds good. Thanks ladies. I wanted the children to write something as they have started to read and write with her this year. Was wodnering if you know of a place that can plastify the pages of the book, like a printer or something like that...For sure a voucher for a spa and some flowers will be a great complement! Thanks!!!

unsweetened cheerios cereal for the kids. The only unsweetened you'll find are at safestway but are more expensive....SOS sponge/cleaning pads too, also at the same place but so much more expensive. In general, toys are not good quality and expensive here so you might want to stock on b-day gifts and ship them here if you can. Nice/good quality furniture is difficult to find I would ship mine if I was you. Forget about appliances,...you will miss your appliances fromt the US, that's all I can say. Make sure you buy cosmetics and sunblock as it is slightly more expensive here... Nothing else I can think of atm...

you're kidding right??? I mean, how can you ask someone who has no kids to find all this stuff. First of all, she can travel with 2 checked-in car seats. Secondly, she can also check in a pack & play which she can use as a bed. I don't know your brother, so no offence, but I'd tell her to go find it herself...

We did comlained long time ago with Raffles nursery via KHDA and they had to change what they were asking for as KHDA came back with their (was it a rule???) answer of 500dhs(clearing my throat here). I think it was because Raffles was asking this at all levels, not only in the nursery years.

Hi everyone, I will be moving to Dubai in June and I'm in the school hunt stage. I finally settled on 2 schools to choose from, ASD and Repton (given that I don't mind either curriculums). I went to both schools and I just couldn't make up my mind!!! If any ASD or Repton parents can give me their feedbacks, it'll be very helpful and highly appreciated Thanks ASD should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as that school! ASD is far superior! Lol!...although their fees are painful! I disagree with you and also have to say the early years are absolutely fantastic. My son loves it and has done huge progress academically. His teachers are amazing. I feel the money I invested was completely worth it so far. You should know that if you want to change your mind after you've started ASD it will be very difficult to be transferred to a British Curriculum school. There are lots of other factors to consdier, not sure why others are not mentionning them, but : 1) where you will be living, as you will drive and pick up your kid from school 2) Fees: ASD is far more expensive then Repton 3) where are you from?: if you are from the UK you might want a british curriculum so you can transfer back your child without issue when you go back home. You should also talk to as many parents as possible so you can get a better idea. I have found that this was the most helpful thing to do for me.

I did talk to a pediatrician once about low muscle tone. He said he seemed fine? But how low is low muscle tone? How do you actually diagnose it? On the other end, it could just be he's not ready for that. I used to be the same when I was young until I started ballet. So maybe he gets this from me. Hard to take for my DH though who use to be very sporty...

Thank you all for your comments. I've tried different things: tennis, swimming, gymnastic, golf, football, even an art class because I thought he was more of an artist, but every time, I have to drag him. I agree some of the above he was too young for, but still I see plenty of kids his age enjoying football and swimming, and they had all school int he am so they 're all tired , but still have plenty of energy to play. He loves to play outside and we have a great garden with swings and other games, and he enjoys it most when we play with him, or with friends, but when it comes to anything requiring coordination, muscular effort, or physical effort, he's not into it. He eats pretty well, plenty of carbs and meat and chicken, although I'd like him to eat larger amount, and has no food allergy, so not sure other then playing mroe outside, what can help him...

good luck with your stroller. You should take pics of it and to prove the damage and send it to them. It willt ake a lot of follow up and patience but they will eventually do something, I hope. Everytime I fly with them (which is once a year to go back home), a bit of the rubbery thing on the handles is missing...

I think GWA accepts credit card just to attract more customers. Most schools dont offer this, and if they do, they rip you off with extra charge (do you really need to pay an xtra on a fee of 42000dhs a year!!!) . Sticky Wicket if you would cancel your payment I think they would cancel your place in less time in takes then it takes to write it! Raffles use to take cc but not anymore...so no more free ride on the airmiles!

you have to consider various issues. Here doctors come and go and so it's hard to find a good doctor you can rely on year after year. Also, I'm pretty sure there are no general/government ministery that controls qualifications of doctors like in many or all other western/european countries. Her cancer may be a pre-existing condition. And also, it depends how well she has recovered from cancer? Does she still needs regular tests on this? What kind of cancer and and how long ago she had it? Many wealthy locals go abroad (includingUS) just for a check up as they dont trust doctors here so she needs to be able to afford a back up doctor at home, for which her insurance must cover in case she decides to do any expensive treatment abroad

this thread is far more interesting and useful then I initially thought. Firstly, you may correct all of my English, as I am not a native English speaking person so I make tons of mistake. Secondly, I am improving my English just by reading this. So carry on. Finally, just to give you an example, the other day I said: my kid's behaviour made a 360 degree change...Didnt feel very smart afterwards...

me too, I feel the same. I feel that human race has failed again to establish an energy source that 's clean and safe. Imagine if all the money they spend to develop, build and install these nuclear plants would have been used for solar energy or other cleaner sources instead, we would all be able to use solar energy efficently by now. I bet you there is a very good lobby for nuclear energy somewhere...

So what do you think about this? Isn't it terribly terrifying for Japan and for the whole world!! I was watching yesterday on CNN they were showing a map of location of nuclear plants by country. India has about 17-20, CHina 20ish, US over a 100, Canada 18. I'm really scared now about all these nuclear plants. WHat if a catastrophe like this would happen anywhere else? Why is the world not investing in clean energy instead, like solar energy? How can governments allow nuclear plant in an earthquacke zone!? Are we safe here, what happens if there is what they called a "total meltdown"??
