I'm pretty sure I've seen candle making equipment at Creative Minds on Umm Suqeim road, just up from Lu Lu's on the right hand side as you head to Al Khail Road. I agree Neal's Yard is best for oils. The closest Neal's Yard to Creative Minds would be at Springs/Meadows Town Centre. Don't know about homeopathy though, sorry.

OH Xmasbaby - an afterthought... If you have an addendum to your lease that is typed in English, but not in Arabic you will need to have this translated into Arabic as well. But it will have to be done by an official legally notarised translator to be recognised by the court. One of the typing centres facing the Union Square Metro Station had access to a notarised translator but it was an overnight job, so you might need to factor that into your timeframes.

Yes but they are asking for it in Arabic? Does this make sense? An arabic letter to file the case? Yes, the official record of complaint has to be in a specific format and in Arabic. Keep it as simple as possible. Supporting documents can be in English. We had ours translated at one of the typing centres at Union Square - close to the Municipal Building. All the official documentation is in Arabic - including the schedule of hearings and the results of the hearings. A lot of the talk that goes on within the hearing will also be in Arabic. You will need to find a friend to translate or have it officially translated back to English to understand it. We had only just arrived in Dubai when we had our hearings so didn't have anyone with us. But to be honest, they are great guys and fair. They were happy to paraphrase what our shonky LL was trying to get away with.

I am Australian and while I love my country, in my opinion it is in a big mess at the moment and I would not be wanting to move there. It is one of the most expensive countries in the world - after Scandinavia and Switzerland if you look at this website of CPI + Rent: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/rankings.jsp Travel to and from Australia is expensive. My friends keep telling me how businesses are in big trouble with many SMEs closing down and multinationals planning retrenchments. All private school fees need to be paid in post tax dollars so consider that your fee might be $25,000 per annum, then you would need to earn $50,000 per annum to pay it. I would certainly be thinking twice about this option. JMO

Well thank you for enlightening me. That was clearly not available when I went through our process with the rent committee as I was told to just take a case out. Good to know it's an option in the future because my experience with RERA most recently was 3 different people, 3 different opinions.

I never said that I had a hearing! Please ready carefully. I have discussed with them. You cannot discuss things with the rent committee, they are the body that have legal jurisdiction to preside on decisions about real estate matters. They sit formally in the evenings in the Municipal Chambers and hear disputes between LLs and tenants over real estate matters. You might have sought advice from RERA. But that is a whole different body. They do not have legal jurisdiction and are just there to "give advice" that may or may not be upheld in court.

She could not have had a hearing at the Rent Committee in this time frame. Getting the paperwork together and a hearing date would not be possible in the amount of time since her first post here.

By breaking the law, you have breached the contract. I would imagine your LL would not have to give you any notice. As Kezzler said, you have already been given good advice, stop wasting our time, give it up and move on. Legally.

I've found decent bed sheets hard to get here. And when you do find them they are expensive. Thing is the beds here can be funny sizes, so if you are bringing some, you need to plan for the size or just bring big flat sheets.

There is one school in the Meadows that has virtually no parking whatsoever. Every morning, they essentially take over a main road leading out of the Meadows by parking whereever they feel like it. Adds quite a bit of time to everyone else's commute! Yes, I live near this school and have to traverse through this every morning and afternoon. You cannot get into the Meadows Village Shops for about an hour around pick-up due to the traffic jam. In this instance I think it's poor planning and design, not so much the parents. Seriously, the civil engineers who planned the road system around this school should have thought "well...it's a school with 1,500-odd kids....How are they all going to get there and get home?" Putting the school flush up against the road allowing only about a 50m drop off area is not enough.

I have been to the Rent Committee. It is a stressful and arduous process. You have to present a range of official documents - all copied 4 times. Your complaint must be written in Arabic and any part of your lease that is in English must be translated by an official legally notarised translator. You have to pay a fee in advance which if I recall was perhaps 3% of the cost of your complaint (presumably in your case, your annual rent). Everything said, everything written is in Arabic. Having said that, the Rent Committee Panel was very moderate and fair. They were kind to us and our children, but firm. Took both sides into account, even when our LL lied and said he hadn't got papers, we had to have a 2 week extension for him to receive and read them. Would I do it again? Yes. Because I believed we were in the right and we were - the RC awarded in our favour. But it took many hearings and a lot of stress because of unscrupulous LL playing games. Would I do it if I were you? No. You have more to lose than to gain. As someone said, you could very well end up in prison for breaking the law. <em>edited by The Original BMAP on 30/04/2013</em>

Would any of these venues also teach children about horse care and let them participate in rubbing the horses down, putting equipment away etc? Something more than just showing up and riding? I'm assuming not, for insurance reasons, but thought I'd ask just in case. TIA

Thanks, ladies. But would it be safe for him to go up? Would the pressure on the lift affect his hearing at all? Maybe im just being paranoid. Is he feeding from a bottle? If so, I would feed him to help change the pressure in his ears. Used to do this with my son in the plane. The descent is worse than the ascent so maybe keep the bottle for the way down.

Generally bags it and puts it next to our bin, though I do have some that is hanging down the side of the villa, but I think that is him being tardy. The sweepings from the garage (bougainvillea petals) tend to end up inside the bin. To be honest, I'm not sure who takes the bags away. Always assumed it was the garbage collectors!

Thanks busybee for clarifying. I am still hunting for a decent PT maid as I just get the runaround from so many agencies. Thought this might be a legal way of finding someone who actually cared about their job and would be reliable because the money was going straight to them. But certainly don't want to risk anything illegal. Will certainly not pursue it after the advice received tonight. Thanks

So was once done, but no longer legal then SM? Asked the question on another thread as feared it had got lost in here. From the response on the other thread seems it is not allowed any more and presumably would incur fines or deportation both for the maid and the client as for any maid working outside the boundaries of her sponsorship?

This is an interesting topic. I remember a while back being told by a long term expat here that it was possible for a maid who was sponsored by a local/Emirati, to do PT work outside the boundaries of that relationship. Something about the Emirati's sponsoring the maid, but they don't live on site with the Emirati family, it is purely a business relationship. Apparently those maids are allowed to have numerous clients as they are not working for that Emirati family - they have only paid for his signature on the visa. Does that make sense? I've never come across this in real life and have wondered whether it is true or an urban myth. Does anyone know?

Certainly. Happy to. The first few times I used them, they sent great girls along who knew what they were doing and worked efficiently as a team. After about the 3rd or 4th time, it seemed when ever I asked for these girls, they were no longer available and the quality of the cleaners they sent me deteriorated significantly. Stupidly, I kept using them thinking each time there would be a better outcome....I would ring them to book someone and ask them not to send the last 2 because they were not thorough, not efficient etc etc. The last time I used them, the girls they sent (and I stress they were girls, looked to be in their early 20's) did about 60% of the job that the first girls had done. Despite the fact that I had told them they needed to allow 60 mins for upstairs and 60 mins for downstairs, at the 60 min mark they were still working upstairs with a significant amount left to do and I warned them they would not have time to complete downstairs. When they eventually started downstairs I came down to find one mopping the floor before it had been vacuumed! And sure enough, they left with me needing about 45 mins to finish off the villa. I often clean my villa myself. I don't have a regular service, just use one when I am too busy to do it myself, so I know how long everything takes. I know they were working inefficiently because I do jobs alongside them (eg ironing or fine detail cleaning like skirting boards, windows etc, leaving them to do the main stuff). To rub salt on the wound, I owed these ladies 120 dhms for their 2 hour job. I only had a 100 & 50 dhm note. They presumed I was giving them a tip and pocketed the 30 dhms! Perhaps things would be different if I had a regular booking and the same girls every time. I have been loathe to back myself into the corner of having to stay home on a particular day, but I am now getting so busy I think I'm going to have to go this route. At this point I am reluctant to leave them with the run of the villa as we have a dog and I would be worried they might let her escape.

In my opinion - partly true, partly not. Yes - diet is the most important part of losing weight. You can lose weight if you manage your diet and don't exercise. As for the second sentance, no, not correct. I assume by "it" TH means fat will turn to muscle and you will bulk up. Firstly, fat and muscle are physiologically 2 different things. One cannot turn into the other, that is physically impossible. Secondly women doing a normal exercise regime cannot "bulk up" - we do not have enough testosterone (even with additional testosterone created by exercising) to bulk up. Cardio will help you burn calories. Weights will help you create more muscle which will in turn increase your metabolism 24 x 7, give you shape and tone. For a woman to bulk up like those female body sculptors you'd have to be lifting a [b'>lot [/b'>of [b'>very [/b'>heavy weights, be eating pretty much only lean protein and very low carbs [i'>and [/i'>possibly taking steroids. A proper exercise programme should combine both cardio and weights. JMO. Edited for a spelling mistake <em>edited by The Original BMAP on 07/04/2013</em>

We arrived from Oz in early August 2011. Just after Ramadan started. Yes, it was hot, and yes, it's a shock, but Dubai is well set up for the heat. Speaking for myself it was a great time to arrive. We'd get out in the morning and the roads were really quiet so it was a lot less intimidating to orient yourself with the *cough* road system here without having the day to day hairy driving that is usually prevalent. Also if you can manage to get to the shops before about 2pm, it's a great time to be picking up stuff for the house as it's so quiet in the malls. Once Iftar is about to hit, chaos reigns....

Just go to your chemist and get a sterile Terumo surgical needle (they sell them in single packs - 1.2 x 38 mm) and some alcoholic swabs (about 6 dhms for a pack of 40 or more). Do it yourself! Swab the area first to make sure all moisturiser, sweat etc is off it. Then you just have to stick it with the needle and the little fatty deposit should pop out. No worries. So you rock up to Dubai to start a new life…having dreamt about living in the sun the endless parties and the amazing tan you are about to get…. The first few weeks are spent going out every night sampling the new bars in the very cosmopolitan city…all the woman are dressed up to the night and you are memorised by everything happening around you….Over a period of six months you make a solid group of friends all in similar situations all new to Dubai and ready to have a good time and play hard… Fast forward four years a few of your friends now are experiencing motherhood for the first time and a couple of them seem to be battling for mum of the year and trying to out do eachother ….60 percent are now expat brats only eating in the best “named” restaurants in town other and completely ruined by Dubai, refusing to eat at anything less than 5 star , 5 percent have left.....I have seen friends transform before my eyes into rude, ignorant, spoilt expats....how do so many people fall into the trap? I don't think this is a Dubai thing. I think this is an age thing. Same thing happened to me in Sydney Australia as I transitioned from a partying, career oriented 30 something into motherhood. People come and go, some stay around, people transition through different periods, different priorities. That's just life. Don't blame it on Dubai.

OK, my knowledge is patchy so this might be all wrong. She really should look up the rules via the Dept of Immigration or whoever manages these things in the UAE rather than asking a bunch of randoms on the internet. But I would think (but not certain), so long as she is still legally married, she would need to be on a residency visa and have an NOC from her husband in order to work. That's what has to happen in order to have a driver's licence and I presume the same principle applies. Then if she wants to sponsor her own children, she would have to be the primary breadwinner and sponsored by an employer while earning 10,000 a month minimum is what I've heard. Would she have to have a degree to achieve this level here? I have no idea, but if so, then the degree would have to be notarised and attested too. That's a lot of loops to jump through. She might be better off heading home, getting a divorce and applying for a residency visa and job under her own steam.

I wouldn't have thought you could secure work with a visitor's visa. I would have thought the company employing you would risk being fined and / or blacklisted and you would be risking a fine, deportation and a ban from re-entry. But, hey, what do I know? Perhaps someone with a better handle on the labour law over here can clarify.

Congratulations! Make sure you do your sums first though as Dubai is not necessarily the financial haven you might think. Where to live probably depends on what kind of lifestyle you have/want. Here are my thoughts on places relatively close to Jebel Ali: Green Community - big family enclave. Beautiful villas with cobbled roads, lots of kids riding around whenever I've been there. Someone else might be able to add more detail to this. Marina - some great apartments with views to water or desert or sometimes both. Close to restaurants and a lovely cobbled walk right around the marina area for fitness enthusiasts with cafe stops along the way. Jumeirah Beach Residence - apartments again along the foreshore just south of the Palm. Lots of cafes, restaurants, bars and a walk across the road to the beach. Can get noisy with hoons on weekends and crowded on holidays. Lakes, Meadows, Springs - more space if that's what you want. Meadows has independant villas, Springs has semi detached townhouses all meandering through established greenery, bike tracks and lakes. 3 bedroom villas available if you have your kids or friends visiting often. High family presence but also many without kids. Community pools set up semi-resort style and 2 golf clubs close by. Local general stores often just a walk away (though probably too hot in summer). Hope this helps. Feel free to keep the questions coming.

If my kids mucked up, it was mostly because they were bored - adults having their own conversations and nothing to do. So with my boys I would always pack a kit of activities that wouldn't take up much room but keep them occupied. They each had a little draw string bag with a drawing pad, activity book, crayons, play dough, their favourite toy car or steam engine (1 was a Thomas fan).

Daiso have woven wicker wreaths in their garden section - you could attach flowers etc to them and they would look sweetly rustic. The question is how big you need it to be. I'm pretty sure these were quite small - might fit a child's head but not an adult's.

The last Arte Souk was on Friday just gone and he was there. The next one is 4 weeks away. I don't think he does the Festival City location as it's a different demographic. If you want to see one of his pieces in real life in the meantime, I think there is one hanging in the foyer of the Address Hotel in Marina (you could confirm this with him). You can order them to size and he prints them up for you. The ones I have are I think 1m x 1m. I can't remember how much we paid now - maybe around 1,500 each? Not exactly cheap, but when you see them up close there is a lot of detail to them. They are not just photo's, he's superimposed numerous Islamic images and calligraphy onto them. Happy to pay that for the original thought to the original artist as they will come home with us and be stand-out pieces in Australia. He will also print onto cushions etc for quirky decor that accessorises them. <em>edited by The Original BMAP on 11/03/2013</em>

Hi ladies! Thank you for the suggestions I am checking them all out now. Tamer Khalifa's page is not showing up on fb, not sure why. That's weird. Maybe you have to be let in to see it (which kind of defeats the purpose)? I vaguely recall him saying he'd had some issues with people copying his work so only let in prospective buyers...
