We went through this recently under slightly different circumstances, a sudden company and country change 4 months before GCSE's. You can't move her mid IB but there are options. We were lucky, the company were great and did not cancel hubbys visa until end of May, which gave us to end June before we had to leave, allowing my kid to sit all the exams. He had to wait for his gratuity, which they held until the actual visa cancellation. Insurance for them against us doing anything or getting debts and also it needs to go with the visa cancellation. We had to cover our own medical insurance for the last months too. We made sure our kid was fully up to date with the Emirates ID in school records, which is fine for the school year. Don't tell the school about any cancelled visas mid year, they only need to check beginning of the school year for enrollment and you are not going to be enrolling again anyway. For tourist visas, it depends on your nationality. I was prepared to do visa runs for the extra time needed for the school year to finish if necessary and you get 30 days after cancellation of your residence visa to leave the country. Don't overstay and it is DAYS, not calendar month. Just be careful to manage your dates. Each visa runs from day of entry, so if there was days left on the last one you can't add on to that with another month! I looked through the exam schedule and worked out which weekends we would need to travel, how long we could be out over spring break and half terms etc, so I had a plan before we found out the company would let us finish out the term by delaying cancellation. Our tenancy was up and we ended up in a small hotel apartment for a few months. We got a deal because it was long let, made sure we were close to school so we could give up the car and then dug into our savings to survive the transition. It isn't easy and requires some careful quiet juggling. You are not planning to overstay, or do anything nefarious, you just need to manage your kid's welfare. Don't panic it can be done. Not cheap but doable. I would ask the company to delay visa cancellation until you can get your daughter through school, with end of service benefits withheld until that time. If they allow it and it is all signed with the HR department, great. If not. You can still do it, it just needs some fancy footwork and will be more bother. But as parents we do what we have to do for our kids, right? If absolutely necessary you could leave at spring break, after that it is revision time in school anyway and she can study at home just as well, especially with technology today, and jut come back for the exams. You will sleep better when you have settled on a plan.

We did this for our son a couple of years ago for USA. Al Fardan exchange (probably some of the other exchange houses) have a load it up card, either with name or without. We did with name and it took about 5-7 days to come. They used to be under the escalator at MOE near French Connection but have moved. Can't help for where they went!

We got one of those annoying pushy phone calls from Etisalat in October saying we HAD to upgrade with the tv, even though we had OSN and Bein sports and didn't want any more channels and I particularly didn't want any more boxes under the tv. No option, they were upgrading us and it was a great deal but we had no choice, we were being upgraded in our area regardless, we may as well have the box since it would be added to the package we had anyway. They came, fixed in the box and left. I immediately disconnected it and put it in a draw. Emphasis on we didn't want it. We knew in September that we would be leaving in February and when we came to close our Etisalat account, which we had had for 17 years, they CHARGED us for breaking the new 2 year contract for the tv channels. We didn't know we had a contract, we knew we were leaving BEFORE they gave us no option but to subscribe - why would we commit for a service we didn't want, knowing we would leave in 4 months? We registered a complaint but you know that that means absolutely nothing. We had to pay the fine, or not be able to close the account.

Been there. Done that. We have done Jeddah, when my kids (all boys) were small. Would not personally do it with teenagers, even more so if I had girls but even with my teenage boys. However, it is not completely horrendous, and it does keep you all together. You know your kids, I can't tell you how they will cope. When they were younger we did the commute to Jeddah thing. Ok for you but hard on hubby because longish flights, 3 hours or so each way, but also with very long passport and customs each time. We have agreed we would only do it again if we were going to have to choose between that and eating! We managed for 2 years but it took its toll physically on hubby. It is a bit of a rat run trip with all the coughing and spluttering on the aircraft you often get and lots of people doing it. Again, depends on how much he is prepared to put up with. For you and kids it is a more comfortable and palatable option. The U.K. option we have also tried, for about 8 months, when the kids were in primary school. All the problems of the Dubai option, with longer flights and miserable weather! How attached are you to uk? Me, not so much, my family all come here to visit because of the weather and lifestyle. Good luck with your decision, there are benefits and drawbacks for all and only you can choose!

This is turning into a big issue. Basically you are saying we are trapped until the summer or we forfeit my daughters education. I suppose we could all move and she could come back for a couple of weeks whilst she does exams but it would be so disruptive.

Good points. Our ID cards are valid until June, does anyone know if you have to hand them back? Daughter registered legally At school, with all the ID card, passport copies etc for this school year although I had not considered the school having a problem with that, many kids have ongoing visa issues, particularly if their sponsorship is changing but I will look into that now you have pointed it out! My driving licence has been continually valid for 25 years here, despite a one year sojourn to Saudi somewhere in the middle, so that probably won't be a problem and if necessary I can pay for everything on credit card or with cash. We simply cannot move her until she has finished her GCSEs in June and I am trying to keep the disturbance to a minimum for the kids.

I have been recently. Assume you mean visas to go into Oman, not turn around Dubai visas for non-residents. We picked up ours at the border no problem.

Many thank for the reply. We are busy arranging a trip to visit, meet with the schools and have a look at housing. It is a bit of a leap of faith with the school because we are very much dependent on what she achieves in her GCSEs and what course options are available for the next stage. GCSE results don't come out until about 26 August or so, very close to the start of term, and it makes changing schools a nightmare for the entire holidays because you are coming back not knowing if they are even going to get in. Whilst it was like that for my older kids who are now at university, when you factor in changing schools, moving internationally and still not knowing if you have a place and it gets considerably more stressful! I suppose in some ways it doesn't matter where we choose to live since I won't know which, or even if any school will offer a definite place until a couple of days before the school year starts!

Thank you Mrs B I guess Muscat hills would be too far from the British school then in the morning rush hour. My daughter is a teenager and not very good at getting up at the best of times! Muscat hills suits us as a housing area, except for the school thing. I am trying to decide if it worth putting up with the commute for the first two years of residence or if it will drive me bonkers and I would be better off in MSQ, Shatti Al Qurum or Azaiba.
