Hi there, we are looking at a possible move to Bangkok & were wanting an idea of the utility costs per month. Is it better to rent a car or buy one? Is it better to hire a full time car driver there or can you drive yourself? Your assistance is appreciated.

Hi Ladies, my husband is entertaining job prospects in both KL & Bangkok. I was wondering if there is any updated information on cost of living in either of these cities. I am looking basically what a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment would cost, tv/tel/internet. Thanks for your input.

Hi, welcome to Doha! Most of us ladies who do not have children here, and are not working join groups like Tuesday Ladies Group (TLG) or American Womens Association (AWA) etc. I am not sure if there is a Danish group here or not. The TLG meets every other Tues at the Radisson Blu Hotel (so next meeting is Dec 2). AWA meets 2nd Mon of each month, or Dec 9 but as it is our Christmas lunch not sure visitors are allowed unless there are still tickets available. Both have websites you can look at. If you are in West Bay area, there is a Sun morning 10:30-noon coffee at Jones the grocer at The Gate Shopping Center, or Thursdays @ 10:30-noon at Starbucks in Landmark Shopping Center, or The Chocolate ..... at The Pearl on Sun. @ 10:30-noon. For Hair: Glow, or Desert Princess, or The Blue Brush Salons, or Dados Gyms: - most complexes have . Some have exercise classes. Intercontinential The City, or Beverley Hills buildings have some of the ones you have listed. Not sure about cleaning companies as mine is through my apartment building. Residential Visas - it depends, are you working or not? I am not working & it took about 3 months. Once the process has been started you can't leave the country as you will have to start over with all the x-rays, blood tests etc. Hope this helps. Hope this helps.

Hi there, glad I could be of assistance. We all need help in these matters. I also found people on this site that were very helpful to me when I was researching Doha. Just put a post on here when you get into Doha & perhaps we can set up a coffee. Taxi/transportation: I usually pay about 30 QAR each way to go to the Pearl, Radisson Blu Area, 35QAR to go to Villaggio & Landmark shopping centers. I sometimes go out only once a week or up to 3 times a wk depends on what is happening. Sometimes I can share a ride with others too which helps. The traffic is really crazy again now that everyone is back after the Summer & so many new people now here. It is less than the rental of a vehicle, the stress of driving (although I admit it would be nice sometimes to have that option)and the accident rates here are high - so that means repair costs. I think my hubby's vehicle was hit within the first 3 months he had it - other persons fault but still a pain in the butt to deal with the getting permission from police to get the repair work done & then getting the repairs done & costs....... Just put a post on here when you get into Doha & if you want to set up a coffee or meet at anyone of the coffee morning groups. Cheers

Hi, it is best to just go around to the apartment towers as they will tell you if they have any openings coming up & when & approx. rents. Lots of place at the Pearl, but 1 road in & out. Good luck. I have put some answers next to your questions: a) how often apartments become available; THIS VARIES YOU HAVE TO KEEP CHECKING b) is it possible to view occupied apartments in a desirable building to get a feel for what might be available- I have read this is not easy; THEY WILL SHOW YOU IF THEY HAVE ANYTHING AVAILABLE TO LOOK AT. c) if we reject an apartment while being on waiting list for whatever reason - floor/ the side of the building, etc., will we be kept on the waiting list or will the landlord get fed up / become unhelpful?; NO SURE, YOU WOULD HAVE TO MAKE THE ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE INDIVIDUAL APARTMENT TOWERS. d) are the apartments at the popular towers mostly rented through a centralised office, or are there also private individual landlords? BOTH, BUT I DIDN'T HAVE BEST OF LUCK WITH AN AGENT, THEY TRY TO GET YOU TO RENT WHAT THEY'VE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RENT OUT. BEST TO DO IT ON YOUR OWN I FOUND. e) is there room for negotiation on the rent? Does the extended rent period - i.e. 2 years help in this respect and what sort of discount can be expected? PROBABLY NOT. WE TOOK AT 2 YR LEASE & NO INCREASE UNTIL LEASE IS RENEWED, BUT NO DISCOUNTS. RENTS ARE GOING UP STEADILY HERE (& WILL CONTINUE TO FOR THE NEXT 6-8 YRS) SO ENSURE YOU HAVE SOME LEAWAY IN YOUR RENTAL ALLOWANCE.

Hi Ladies, I would recommend getting all your documents (university/specialty education/degrees & marriage certificates) they need to be translated into Arabic & attested. I am sure there are companies at home that can do this before you get here as it only delays your start of employment. I hope you have been advised that Sidra Hospital is still being built, not sure when construction will be complete so don't quit your jobs yet. Delays in construction are typical for projects here. I hope you have negotiated extremely good packages especially if you are having to pay for your housing as it seems to be increasing by 8 - 10% annually. Food is another big expense, gas is cheap. Also you may want to see if you can get an E-Gate on your Perm Res. Card so you can by-pass lines when you enter the country (not the first time though - apply once you get here). This is a hard place to work - be prepared for long hours (longer than at home, they are going to get their money's worth from you). Yes sounds negative but a reality. Despite that, we have met a lot of nice people here. There is a nice Canadian group here so when you arrive look them up Canadians in Qatar FB, and get registered on the Canadian Abroad website. The Canadian Embassy also has a FB site here. Good luck.

Hi Ladies, I hope you are all successful in your getting the jobs. I would like to ask you to follow what is going on with the new contractor taking over at Sidra(google them) & construction progress. Mary Catherine gave you a lot of good & important information. If the hospital doesn't get finished for a year or more then you will be left waiting around so it is important to keep yourselves informed. Many companies have either quit or gone broke, or been replaced because of business practices here. When you are negotiating, please check out any assigned housing as it may not be to your taste, or conveniently located. If offered a housing allowance be sure it is an extremely good one. You may want to look up posts regarding that. What you think is a good amount, may not be for here as housing & food costs are the most expensive items we have to pay for. EG housing - 2 bed apartment can range from 6,000 - 20,000QAR/month depending on the area, & furnished or unfurnished. If you have a spouse who wants to work I would try & get that lined up, or be in negotiations, before you sign because it is hard to find a job once they are here. The hiring process is a long process with many delays, paperwork getting lost etc. (My husbands took 5 months!) Then there is at least another month of doing the final paperwork, x-rays etc here for all your cards (while you are trying to work). Also be prepared to be working very long long hours. Not trying to be negative but it is a reality & it is best to be informed as much as possible before making the move & finding out things when you get here. (eg scrimping or living in a place you hate because housing allowance is too low). Also check out when you can start taking leave because some contracts are longer than others. I've been here only 19 months & have seen many people come & go. (I believe Mary Catherine has been here much longer.)Good luck.

Hi, glad info was helpful. It is always a confusing time when moving to another country and trying to figure things out. We arrived in mid Dec 2012 & it was very quiet at that time as so many expat ladies were away for xmas/new years . When you get closer to the date, let me know & we can arrange to meet if I'm in country. Once your hubby arrives I am sure his co-workers can help him with what areas work for them for travelling to & from work. He can also start looking at places & perhaps put his name on the waiting lists for those he likes. Just have him take a video or photos of the places he looks at so you can see if it would suit you & where any furniture you may have, would fit in. We living in a fully furnished apartment but do have a few pieces of furniture . The building here was very flexible about removing their furniture to make room for ours. If you do this, ensure you get it in writing so they don't charge you at the end of your lease for missing furniture. Have fun with packing & organizing for your cat. Also, Dec 18th is a National holiday here so many places will not be open & there will be lots of traffic because of the big parade on the cornice. Cheers!

Hi Ladies, congratulations on your new jobs. There is a Professional Women's Association that meets in the evenings that may interest you. If you are going to be in the construction industry then there is the Lighthouse Group for you as well. Unfortunately, most of the other ladies groups meet during the day when you would be at work. From there you may also be able to find out what some of the husbands of the other professional working women do here (if they are not working). Good luck & welcome to Doha.

Hi there. All one can do is gather all the information you can to make your decision to move to an expat job and go from there. Sending you an early Welcome to Doha. I hope everything is in motion for you to move soon as it took about 2 months from the time my hubby was given the job until we arrived as it takes sooooo long to get anything done here. Ensure you have all your Attestations done for hubby's degrees, your marriage etc. as that will cause extra delays. Yes my hubby works for a contractor I the rail industry. We love living in West Bay, even my hubby who didn't initially want to live in the inner city. We decided to spend the extra rent because we find convenience worth it. We can walk to numerous restaurants/hotels, 2 shopping centers, the cornice etc. He finds it nice to walk over to one of these places for a nice dinner in the evening & not worry about driving/parking & he can have a drink if he wants. Even in the heat I manage to walk the short distance to the city center shopping mall - with an umbrella). You just have to be smart about walking in the heat. When I want to go outside of west bay I use a driver or share a taxi with others, or sometimes with a friend. The rents are higher but we decided to pay that for the convenience & my independence. I have many friends who live at the Pearl, we liked it up there but chose not to live there because there is only 1 road in/out, plus there is still alot of construction on the road/metro line in that area for a few more years yet. Also, everyday, twice a day the traffic gets halted for Royal Family coming & going to that area. (That can happen in any area but some of them live at the Pearl). You need to pick a place that works for both of you. What I have seen for tower apartments at the Pearl have been nice, but they probably range close to the west bay prices, or not much less. The ladies at the Pearl do have a lovely walk on the cornice, but again depending on weather. Most towers/compounds have a gym & pool (some inside, some outside). The Pearl is slowly growing, a movie theatre & new Spinney's grocery store just opened & they are both nice & very much needed in that area. FYI: When you are looking for an apartment I found it useful to just go to the tower and ask to view an apartment or if they have anything available rather than use an agent as they only seem to show you 1 or 2 & show you ones they haven't been able to rent or never return your calls. It is hard footwork (drive around)but worth it if you can find a place & usually quicker because you are doing on your schedule, not theirs. You can also ask to be put on waiting list & maybe live in a hotel for a month or two before deciding. (PS A good company that owns many properties is the Al Fardan Group there is another but I can't think of it at this time). When you get here: Tuesday Ladies group (see website) meets every other Tues at the Radisson Blu Hotel and the American Women's Association (AWA) see website - meets once/month at a hotel & then has a hosted coffee morning. They also have a Thursday coffee morning at Starbucks - several around the city but maily at Landmark shopping center. There is also the coffee morning at Jones the Grocer in The Gate shopping center in West Bay or at the Chocolate box at the Pearl. From there you can meet others very easily. There will many new ladies at this time of year. Perhaps we will meet. If you want to meet for a coffee, let me know. Good luck !

So sorry to hear about your daughter's situation but until her husband gets help to find a better headspace nothing will change and she is better out of the relationship, and thank goodness there are no children to worry about. She now needs to work on herself and move forward and hopefully someday she will find the loving man that will share a family with her. Glad you are able to help her, good luck.

Hi, my hubby is also in the construction industry and works 6+ days a week & is available on the phone 24/7 7 days/week. Your hubby's work hours would probably also depend on his job level. The higher the position, the longer the hours but normal work week is 6 days/wk min. 48 hrs. Also, if your hubby would be reporting, or working with a head office in another country he will have to work hours to accommodate phone calls, video meetings & visits from them (eg entertaining them after work when they come here) with them. Often my hubby's parent company want these phone calls on Fridays & they know this is his 1 day off, they don't care! Unpaid overtime is expected! I know the "no income tax is very luring" but would look at the salary & divide it by at least 48 hrs/wk & see if that still works out financially for you. Also, get the highest housing allowance you can as the rents go up a min. of 10%/yr. unless your company would be providing this. We live in an area (West Bay) a reasonable distance from my hubby's work so I can can be independent without a vehicle. I don't have children here but living close to available transportation & grocery shopping makes my life easier & my hubby doesn't have to go grocery shopping on his 1 and only day off. It is hard here for the person working here as it is an atmosphere of the expats are here to SERVE the local projects regardless of the cost/sacrifice to the expat (working hours/family time). Qatar is expensive except for gas. Just gather all your information on here before making your final decision. Good luck. I am not bitter, it is just the reality here & the more one is informed the better & you'll know what to expect. The life of the expat wife here is easy - lots of ladies groups & easy to make friends. <em>edited by parkclark on 28/07/2014</em>

Hi sleigh1985: Not sure where you are travelling from but just organize yourself with information on the airports you will be travelling through, or transferring in. There is always someone at the airports to ask but most have good signage. Make sure you pack your phone/computer chargers to keep your items charged or some airports will not let you bring them through (new security directives). It is not hard to meet other expats here in Doha. If you will be working here you will be busy during the day so there is a Professional Business Woman's group that meets once or twice a month in the evening. If you are coming with a partner & not working then there is the TLG-Tuesday ladies group - meets every other Tues at Radisson Blu Hotel, AWA- American Women's Association - meets once monthly & has coffee mornings in several places around town. (see website). There is the coffee morning at Jones the Grocer at The Gate Mall in West Bay area Sun @ 10 am. If you have children you can meet people through the schools or Doha Mom's group. Through these groups you can usually find someone to hang out with or find an activity you will enjoy. Now that we are having EID places will re-open for normal hours & it will be easier to meet others. Things should be in full swing about the time you arrive here in a few months. Enjoy the trip & be prepared for the heat even in Sept or Oct. Cheers & Welcome to Doha!

Hi there, have you tried propertyfinder.qa ? Maybe you can find something on there. I think just asking your friends about where they live can be of assistance too. Al Fardan properties are all good to live at & they have several apartments, condos & villas all over the city. We found it is best to just go up to a building & ask, don't know about villas as we didn't investigate any. Good luck.

Hope you can get your kids into the school here. I know in the past we have had to turn down jobs in other countries because we couldn't get our daughter into any school. I certainly hope your hubby will have a BIG package as it is expensive to live here (more than Vancouver)& rents are going up each year so if your employer isn't paying for it then you may want to ask for cost of living amount each year to cover that. Also I have heard from other parents that isn't enough here for teens to do & what there is, is expensive. What you think is a good pay amount, ask for more. Not trying to be negative but just realistic. We like it here but it is really expensive, except for the gas! We are also originally from BC before becoming expats. Good luck.

Hi Kegs2005: We arrived last Dec & found there were some decorations available here. We were pleasantly surprised that all the shopping malls were decorated & xmas tunes playing. We shipped our decorations but not a tree. I did see a few trees, most were not that great. I would bring your tree & a few decorations, they are easier to find than a nice tree, and if you do find it here, it will be expensive. Good luck.

Hi Sanap, As Deb K says there are lots of Canadians here. I have only been here for 10 months so haven't met too many yet. We haven't attended any of the Cdns in Qatar events as many are during the working week or happen to fall on an evening when my hubby has a work function etc. One day hopefully.... I don't work & found it easy to meet people here. If you get yourself out to the coffee mornings, Tuesday Ladies Group and AWA groups etc, you can branch out and decide what type of activities you would like to participate in. I don't know about company housing as we just got an allowance so had to find our own accommodation. I would recommend you really do your research - ie salary & cost of living here is higher ( probably more than Toronto I believe)although accommodation is usually the highest cost & if it is provided I guess you won't have to worry about that. Many companies would give you a lesser amount than what you would earn in Canada but it is because you won't pay tax here. Also, in your case, maybe less because they are providing the accommodation too. The lure of no tax is great but many people come here only to find out they will be putting in very very long hours so I hope your hubby is prepared. It is a good lifestyle & a great experience. My hubby was born in Toronto & raised in Ont & BC & I am from Vanc. I look forward to meeting you at one of the many functions if all goes well. Cheers

Hi, Pauls, Casper & Gambini are all good, but most places have salads, just ask for dressing on the side, or change fries for salad, don't eat all the burger bun, or the toast with your breakfast. You just have to be creative with your food choices, just like anywhere else. The great brunches & restaurants are very tempting, you just have to have the strength to resist all the food you know you shouldn't eat. Or, make it only once a week to eat those foods. I know as I am back on my diet too & it is tempting out there. Good luck.

Hi there: Do your research and find out if it is a place where you think you can function. It is pretty ok here - they have stores with imported foods & clothing, international schools, movie theatres, shopping centers, lots of ladies groups where you can meet others in the same boat as you, I feel relatively safe here, but like being in any foreign country you should be aware of what is going on around you & be informed on events/dangers etc. The local people are ok, & really don't mix much with the expats, but can be a bit rude & drive badly but if you can find a way to deal with these things you will survive. Respect the country's rules for dressing etc. You will be fine, But Life anywhere is what you make it. edited by parkclark on 25/08/2013 <em>edited by parkclark on 25/08/2013</em>

It arrives today and depending on how long customs takes, I could have it by next week. Yeah!!! I will let you know should I not be going. Did I give you my email? My distinguishing features are: I am fairly short with shoulder length strawberry blond hair and I am a little older than you. I will probably wear a white jean jacket. See you Sun at 10 at Jones'! edited by parkclark on 30/01/2013 <em>edited by parkclark on 31/01/2013</em>

Hi Craftylorna, yes I did the same thing, but have run out of my supply now since it has been 4 months since we packed up the house. Patience, is what I need to practise now, it won't be much longer, I hope. Have a good trip back and I look forward to catching up for a coffee.

Hi Ladies, thanks for more info and to Craftylorna and Kimmc3 for the kind offerings I think I am just whining, as I am not in dire straights, just withdrawal as I have been without my craft supplies for 4 months and I think impatience is getting the better of me. We just got confirmation our shipment is to arrive in Doha on the 29th and since hubby has RP now, hopefully it will not take too long until delivery. I will have to check out Colour box and Jarir. I have noted the shop names in Dubai/Abu Dhabi for when we take a trip there. I am sure the prices are more, but then so were the prices in Australia where I moved from. Everything was imported. Hope you are having a nice time in the UK Craftylorna and that you don't get snowed in or anything. the weather here is beautiful right now.
