Thanks a lot for your answers. I am now pretty sure it is not linked to food. Air quality is important but I don't see how it could provoke diarrhea, anyway our air-con has bee cleaned recently. We are currently testing the water hypothesis. Finger crossed!

I did - you need individual pages to be able to scan them which means that you would need to destroy the book/album :(

We have three lovely children (6, 3, 1) and we are thinking about a fourth one. How is it likely to change our life? I don’t think there is a big change from 3 to 4 but I don’t know any family of 4! I would love to hear your opinion, learn from your experience! Big thanks in advance!

:) No I don't! I wished I would have the patience to work with kids. The website suggested professionalism and the nursery seems to be geared towards working parent, which is what I am looking for and not that common in Dubai. However, I was surprised not to see any mention of it on the forum. I haven't visited it yet and I would have liked to hear from parents beforehand. I did not realized that it was a new nursery.

Have you checked the Dubai Gynecology and Fertility Center (DGFC) 04 439 3832 - they have their own pharmacy. Good luck

Hi, I've received the brand new IPad for Xmas and it introduced me to Siri, kind of 'introduced me' since I still don't know what I can really do with Siri on my iPad. I would love to hear from your experience. Thanks! Pascale

Hi, My mum is to undergo a laparoscopy of the pelvic area. We have been referred to Dr. Ritu Khare. Has any of you been operated by her? She seems to have a very good track record, but we would feel better to hear from older patients from her. The alternative for us is always to go back home for the surgery if necessary (i.e. France). Thanks in advance, pascale007

Hi, I am looking for somebody to help my son who is 3 and is speaking French, German and English or at least trying! ;) We all had to go through speech therapy in my family so I want to make sure we are not starting too late. My assumption, but pls correct me if I am wrong, is that a French or German speech therapist may be more qualified to help, as English is usu. a given here. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi, My husband and I are both working and due to heavy work schedules we are limited in the amount of vacation we are able to take this summer. We have a 2,5-year old toddler and we were thinking about sending him to his grand-parents to sweeten his summer and also learn French as it is his mother-tongue (literally!). My husband is adamant that he should not be left more than 2 weeks without us, I am more flexible and think that 3 weeks should not be too hard. What do you think? What is your experience? I should add that the grandparents are fit, healthy, looking forward to any arrangements and know our toddler very well as they are living in Abu Dhabi during the year. Thanks in advance!

I would like to recommend Howdra to anyone who is looking for a handyman to put up mirrors, curtains, lights, anything around the house. I just had them in yesterday thanks to a recommendation on here and I could not have been more impressed. At the modest price tag of 150aed for an hour, four handymen with two ladders, drills and plenty of equipment came and finished everything in 45 minutes. They got my approval for everything before they did it and made sure I was happy with spacing and height before they drilled. The communication was excellent, the customer service, exemplary, and I will most definitely use them again. Just to let you know! [email protected] for any enquiries And I would like to do exactly the opposite as I have add terrible experience with them. I've contacted them for handywork after reading good reviews in Expatwoman but I truely regret it since. Ended up paying twice the quoted price for a terrible job (curtain hanging) with not even a word of excuse from the company. Their response to my experience was ' once back from holidays, in my office, etc. we will investigate - after 3 months I gave up - don't want to feel like begging.

Howdra 150 dhs an hour for 2 guys but monitor exactly what you want. I see it is only one pair so maybe you better line up some shelves etc for them to put up! :D edited by spongemonkey on 22/04/2012 This is what I did - I've booked howdra for 12 identical IKEA curtains and monitored them. Still I've paid double the quoted price and my curtains are between 3-6cm off the floor (despite instruction they should be touching it), and the company did not think there was anything wrong with that!

I have had very good experience with Dynamic Speed for regular maintenance and (free) advises (Irfan - 0556982045) And I should have used them for hanging my IKEA curtains. I've used Howdra instead and it has been a bitter experience. I paid double the quoted price and my curtains are between 3-6cm off the floor (despite instruction they should be touching it). The worse was the reaction of the company when I nicely reported the incident, they send me emails every 3 weeks for 3 months or so to tell me they would investigate but nothing ever happened, hardly a 'we are sorry' ...

Thanks - so basically I need to check whether the lining is affected. If it is not, I have a chance to save my fridge otherwise I can spare me the challenge. "cause it is going to be one, I nearly faint each time I open the door! None of you were concerned with bacterial contamination of the firdge which actually was my first concern. I have a 6 months old baby and the freezer compartment is mainly for his food.

... after it has been off electricity for app 2 weeks with food inside? Is it worth spending time cleaning it or should I go straight to the shop to buy a new one? If so what to do with the smelly old one? Thanks for any tip or experience with this topic. This was the best surprise ever coming back from holiday! We've contacted DEWA which told us the electricity was out either because of a short-circuit or overusage. We were gone on vacation and only the aircon was on at a relatively low power ....

Hi, Any recommendation for a good lunch delivery company? I am using homegourmet right now, which I really appreciate but they focus on Indian food and would love to try different cuisine (e.g., Asian). I am not into losing weight so lively and the same aren't interesting and I am also on a wheat-free diet so all the Italian/sandwiches option aren't helpful either. What I like about homrgourmet is that they have a set menu for the week and I only need to order once - the food is good too! Thanks

Hi Ladies, I am looking for somebody to look at my 6 months old either during the day (so that I can do some sport) or during the evening (so that my husband and I can have some kind of private life). I have been looking in the companies proposing babysitting services but I would prefer somebody who is recommended to me and honestly with the fares of the taxi (app. 150 extra) these companies are not cheap for regular service! Thanks in advance!

I somehow glad to read that i am not the only one who has been treated rudely! I was shocked. They advertise wheat free products so i was inquiering and they basically did not want to check what was wheat free what was not and tell me what i could order and left me at the counter not even wanting to take a drink order. Lol. Even better i was the only customer wanting to order, so no stress there ....

Bonjour Ladies, I am afraid there is no celiac association in the UAE and I was wondering if there is any in the Gulf region? English or Arabic I am interested in both. Unfotunately I can't do a search in Arabic, for those who can - Thanks! Cheers, pascale

Many thanks for your replies. I did indeed read all the instructions, watch the DVD and even re-watched them on the website but my case is a lost one! Or may be even my family as my mum tried to help while she was there and was equally lost! :) Could be because my little one is only 2 weeks and it is too early to play around with a sling. I will email the Dubaiwearing people and see what they recommend.

The biology behind gluten intolerance is very poorly understood and in some cases it does not make much sense! For example it is estimated that only 20% of celiac have gastrointestinal symptoms, that counting silent/latent/true celiac up to 1% of the population could be affected, and the last one (my favorite!) gastrointestinal symptoms are NOT correlated with intestine degeneration, ie your intestines could be completely degenerated and you would not have pain (but certainly nutritous deficiency). Having said that the blood markers are all different in their sensitivity/selectivity and if I remeber well only one is now recommended, the others being considered suboptimal. I think the main reason why it took me so long to get my body GF is that I was simply doing mistakes all the times :) and it took a while to really get ride of gluten. For example, there could be gluten in a low fat yogurt or in anything which was smoked. The European legislation has changed since and it now need to be written on the label but sometimes I feel sick for no apparent reasons and I wonder. When it all started I was living in Germany and they had a great celiac society - incredible amount of scientific materials and a database listing all the products you could buy in a shop. It was very useful, there is unfortunately nothing like that over here. Anyway lot of luck and support as the beginning is not easy

Restaurant cards simply explain in the language of the country what celiac disease is and what one can eat or not - although I have to be honest it is sometimes easier to just say one as a wheat allergy - and I try to have the chef questioned about the food or even come by to our table. I don' have eany website to recommend just google 'gluten restaurant cards' and you will find loads of site. For receipes the Schaer and Querfood websites have quite a few good ones. Reg. soy sauces, actually most of them are fine 'cause the fermentation process is so long it completely denatures the gluten protein. For some products/restaurants it is sometimes a hit or miss try! However to be 100% sure Kikoman produce GF soy sauce - I guess one needs to order it and have it shipped edited by pascale007 on 19/01/2011

Hey, I've just posted into today's other gluten thread but in short my Dubai celiac experience: Official diagnosis is blood test AND endoscopy, which is strongly recommended. I have no direct experience but heard about a good celiac specialist at City hospital. Best GF products at Carrefour (MoE) from the brand Dr. schaer (bright yellow packaging close to the organic section), Organic caffe, Spinney and Lulu also have some selection. I find eating out, esp. Asian Indian, much easier than in Europe 'cause some cuisines are corn-flour based and they used less industrial products here. Most upscale restaurant have a special GF menu, and for the less fancy ones I use restaurant cards in EN and AR Labelling regulation has been changed a couple of years ago and products form EUROPE must label their allergy potential (so I mostly shop at Carrefour) and I did notice the chane in the label.

Carrefour (MoE) recently started to import Dr. Schaer product which is the best GF brand that I know. You basically have everything from pasta, flour, cakes, salty snacks, etc. And it tastes like normal food!! So you don't even have to look for GF-recipes :) Funny enough the products are in the 'organic/ethnic section' where the fruit juices are, but the Dr. Schaer products are bright yellow so you can't miss them :) Having said that I've needed more than 2-weeks to feel the benefit of the GF-diet after I have been diagnosed celiac (and this was after blood test AND endoscopy, ie according to official diagnosis). I could feel the improvement app. 3 months after I started the diet. If I can only give you an advice: get yourself properly diagnosed before satrting the diet, once you've started it is much more difficult to diagnosed and to follow a GF diet is very very contraignant/expensive so you really don't want to do it if not necessary. I don't have personnal experience but I've heard about a celiac specialist at City Hospital. Last but not least, I have loads of material on the topic if interested PS just going through your original post. I have myself some issues with sulfites but never had any problems with the Dr. Schaer product. edited by pascale007 on 18/01/2011 edited by pascale007 on 18/01/2011
