Horrible wifi where I am currently staying . I do have VPN. HOW do I stay connected to the outside world? Movies? What store is like USA Target? Anyone have a yoga studio they love?:loser::cry: Welcome to Dubai and to the forum! I feel your pain, after 6 years here I still miss Target! While there really isn't any store here quite like Target , similar "one stop shops " are Carrefour, Ansari Gallery, and even Lulu Hypermarket's department store section which is usually upstairs (groceries downstairs) If you have a VPN, you can stay connected to American tv through network stations like ABC.com online etc or subscribe to OSN cable packages. Free channels that bring American tv/movies are the MBCs (MBC Max, MBC 2, MBC 4, etc) Good luck!

Hi women! Please share me effective ways on how to lighten pimple marks in my face and some scars in my body. I need it to be affordable also. Thank you so much in advance. Yes, you can try Mebo cream, it's the best! I've used it and it works wonders on new scars after injuries, burns, etc. Haven't tried it on old scars but heard it works for those too. You can get Mebo at any major pharmacy.

Hi Ladies, I have a couple of baby gifts I received for my new baby that I don't need as I already have them. I tried posting on the EW Classifieds section to sell but it doesn't appear to be working Admin? I have a brand new bassinet from Baby Shop still sealed closed in its original box for 250 AED (checked original price in Baby Shop is 385 AED) and a Bright Starts Bouncer Rocker Seat also sealed closed in original box for 125 AED (original 199 AED). If you are interested or would like pictures, you can email me! [email protected]

Hi, Can anyone recommend a piano teacher for autistic kids? I know one - her name is Ruby and she's fantastic. I know she used to give lessons on Saturdays at a Center in Jumeriah, but not sure if she is still teaching there. You can call and ask about her at 04 -423 3667 and ask about the Music teacher Ruby. Good luck!

Great work - sometimes trying to get this information is like getting blood from a stone. I don't suppose you have the costings for Al Zahra? I haven't been as persistent as you, and so haven't been able to get much info! In fact, yes, I do ;) antenatal package is 5600 AED, Normal Delivery is 11,000 AED and C Section is 21,500 AND. Epidural 1825 AED. Keep in mind these are the cash packages, list price only -- meaning expect more fees for extras, complications, etc.. I have the maternity brochure with all the descriptions/inclusions received from Al Zahra Hospital directly - I can email to you if you want , just include your email.

Hello ladies, I've been searching expatwoman and others for info on delivery experience and fees at Dubai Hospital. There are a few old posts, but finding it very difficult to find any reviews or feedback with solid information. I've also called Dubai Hospital but again didn't get anywhere except to be told to visit Prime Medical Center? to sign up ? Any updates or feedback on the delivery experience / the doctors at Dubai Hospital would be great before I sign up and register. Also looking for costs information both with and without insurance. (I think my insurance might cover it on reimbursement basis) also do you have to pay a prenatal package or can you register just ahead of delivery? I am already advanced 30 weeks+ Thanks!! Ok so I am answering my own post here as I have managed to wrangle up information by calling the DHA 6 times, calling two Primary Medical Centers, and calling Dubai Hospital every day for a week until I collected this info. I am posting now for the benefit of future readers who may need this info as desperately as I did ! Process to use Dubai Hospital/ Latifa Hospital as of June 2017: 1- visit a Primary Medical Center (PMC) near you (there are like 20 all over Dubai - check DHA website for list) 2- see a General Practioner doc at PMC for consult (150 AED) 3- GP will refer you to see an Ob/Gyn at PMC - OB will not see you without signed referral letter from GP. In order to see said Ob/Gyn you must buy antenatal package (5,000 AED). Package covers appointments, labs, scans, etc. You will see Ob/Gyn docs at PMC throughout pregnancy 4- close to delivery time (approx 36 weeks) you get transfered to see docs at the actual hospital (Dubai/Latifa). 5- delivery takes place at the hospital (9,000 AED for Normal Delivery ) by whomever is on call from OB team on day of Delivery. Total approximate cost in 2017 without complications, C Section, epidural, any extras = 14,500 AED. FAQs: 1- even if you are already in your 8th or 9th month of pregnancy and already did all labs/scans/ appts elsewhere, you still must buy the antenatal package of 5,000 AED. 2- can you transfer from your own OB directly to the hospital? Nope. Must follow the above steps. 3- do you have to make a Dubai Health Card first? Not necessarily - you can walk around with your documents instead although I'm told it's " better " if you do just make the card. Cost for health card (320 AED) docs needed standard Dubai operating procedure (passport copy, visa copy, EID, tenancy contract, DEWA Bill, 1 photo ) 4-Can you pick which hospital you want Latifa vs Dubai? Nope. They assign the hospital to you based on where you live (which they know from your tenancy contract). Deira and surrounding areas go to Dubai Hospital. Bur Dubai, Jumeriah, etc go to Latifa. Hope this helps anyone who needs the info above!

I also now have a pretty comprehensive list of costs for delivery in Dubai area private hospitals for delivery (June 2017). Info gathered by applying similar methodology of calling avg of 3 times per hospital and speaking to 3 agents (information, cashier, and appt desk) per hospital. For queries just let me know.*** :nerd::biggrin:

Hi guys, Want to deliver at Latifa Hospital, but it is not allowed for Sharjah residents. They directed me to the Dubai Hospital. However, I cannot find experiences on delivering in this hospital, just a few google reviews. What are your experiences with this hospital? And has anyone also had their checkups at Qusaim Medical Governmental Centre? I'm not sure about this one as well, this belongs to the package with delivery. And if you don't know if they are good, do you have better recommendations for delivery? Hello ladies, I've been searching expatwoman and others for info on delivery experience and fees at Dubai Hospital. I know the OP posted this last year and like her, finding it very difficult to find any reviews or feedback. Any updates or feedback on their delivery experience / the doctors there from ladies who delivered at Dubai Hospital would be great. Also looking for costs information both with and without insurance. (I think my insurance might cover it on reimbursement basis) Thanks!!

I have no experience of it myself but when I saw your post I thought of the Iranian Hospital. If you google ''giving birth at the Iranian Hospital'' - quite a lot comes up on chat sites - including EW. In June 2010 Febetka said the Iranian Hospital cost AED4,100 for delivery minus 20% with health card. Good luck! Interesting - I will look for posts and check it out - has anyone delivered at Iranian Hospital recently and has feedback?

Thanks all for your replies. I am so confused on what to do - it sounds like in either case (with or without insurance) I am looking at high out of pocket costs for delivery. It seems 7000 k will not cover any delivery fully in Dubai ... but wish it was more clear how much things cost around here! Good luck to you labello on your delivery!

Hi Ladies, In planning for the delivery of my 2nd baby (but this will be my first baby in Dubai) I originally intended to deliver at either Mediclinic City Hospital or Al Zahra Hospital. However after reading many of the posts on expatwoman (most are older posts), I've heard there are lots of extra/hidden costs above the "price of the delivery package". I know the things listed as exclusions (epidural, forceps, etc) are not included but can anyone who has recent info (2016-2017) comment on how much extra costs beyond the package price I should plan for? And even better what these costs are for? Thing is I may or may not have insurance at delivery time (my current insurance which covers delivery up to 7000k will expire before my delivery). So I will either pay to renew my insurance and pay the costs above the 7000 delivery limit, or buy a delivery package at these hospitals. Help please!!!!!!

Hi Ladies, I am currently seeing Dr. Deemah for my pregnancy and she is awesome!! While I haven't yet delivered with her, all of my appointments with her to date have been wonderful - she is caring, attentive, and very detail oriented. She's also super-responsive via email to any questions you might have along the way and is very prompt on follow up/results after appointments. She's American Board Certified and the hospital she used to practice at in Michigan is one of the best in the country. Could not give her a better recommendation! Good luck!!

My child's dubai school just sent notice they will shorten the school day permanently on Thursdays for all grade levels, to dismissal at 12:10 pm instead of 2:30 pm ! That means almost 2.5 hours shaved off each week = 10 hours less per month! The reason stated was for teacher training, but I am shocked the KHDA would approve this??? Shouldn't teacher training be done after school or on special teach work days? Is this normal???

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying, however we do not plan to do any visa run or extend for another 30 days. We simply need about 35 days instead of 30. I've heard visa on arrival into Dubai Airport and exiting a few days after 30 but before 40 is ok - I just don't know how to get this information confirmed. I'm thinking to call Amer Service 4 times and take an average on responses?

My mom is coming to Dubai for a visit (American passport) and she will get a 30 day visa on arrival. I would like her to say for about 35 days, and I have just heard there is a 10 day grace period without penalty so she can technically stay 40 days. I called Amer Service (800 5111) to ask and the first agent I spoke to said no, the 10 grace period is only if you are processing a renewal for another 30 days. The second agent I spoke to confirmed and literally said no worries - she can stay total 40 days no penalty, there is a grace period of 10 days. Which is true?? Any one know for certain or had a family member try this?

thanks! Just had a search on the forum posts and found many people saying Spinneys and Al Maya Supermarket has fabric dye. Hope it works. Bought a really cute denim jack but its tye-dye blue and I think it will look much better and go with more things if its one color. Hoping to find dark blue or black dye to make it one color. We'll see!!

My kid is off from school for over 3 weeks and I'm looking for a holiday day camp that will be fun for him and break up the time off at home. But I've only seen a couple available and only for like 5 days during Christmas. Does anyone know of any holiday camps and/or used any holiday camp for their little ones they recommend? My son is 5 years old.

really? You were able to?? you are right, they might not immediately know, but when I filed my federal taxes last year I had to report that I was living abroad - doesn't this get reported for your state taxes so they know you don't need to file state taxes? Anyhow I have tried renewing online several times and it says cannot be completed. The rule in Michigan is that if you renewed online last time, you have to go in person this time. I'm pretty sure I renewed online 5 years ago, which is why its not working this time..

Yea its not that - they have online renewal - but the thing is, I live in Dubai now, I am no longer a resident in my state. Licenses are done through the states only, so I'm thinking even if I could somehow get this renewed, I don't even think they would let me because I no longer live in the state. My hope is, that with enough convincing, the RTA here in Dubai will do it. Otherwise I think I'm pretty much screwed!! desperate for ideas, so if anyone has a solution or way out, please send them my way!

I was a little late in deciding to get a UAE driver's license and now when I was gathering my documents to go apply, I noticed my U.S. driver's license expired a few months ago?!?! I know the requirement probably says "valid" U.S. driver's license, but has anyone had any luck getting a UAE license anyways with an expired one? Secondary question - is there a way to renew a driver's license from abroad? I tried online and it wont allow me except in person... the DMV is managed through individual states so I don't think the US Embassy would be able to do anything? ideas anyone?? edited by pinksushi on 31/10/2013

ok I have one - literally overheard at McDonald's no less :) and I promise promise its 100% authentic Its around 7 pm and we've already placed our order and we're just waiting for our food when this is what I hear from the next customer in line: McD's Employee: Can I help you? Customer: Yes, I ordered a cheeseburger, but when I opened it, there was no cheese. McD's Employee: So you want a cheeseburger? Customer: No, I already ordered one, back at my office, but I opened it and there was no cheese McD's Employee: * blank stare* Customer: There was no cheese in my cheeseburger. Customer: Its a cheeseburger, I paid for cheese, but there was no cheese, only hamburger. McD's Employee: So you want cheese? Customer: No, I want a cheeseburger, a sandwich with hamburger and cheese. McD's Employee: *blink blink* Customer: (getting angry now) I ordered a cheeseburger, but the one I got did not have cheese. I need a cheeseburger. McD's Employee: So where is it? where is your wrong order? Customer: well I already ate it - this was earlier at lunch today but I didn't have time to come back until now... but it didn't have cheese and I ordered a cheeseburger duhhhhhhhh....what the !#>? I almost exploded trying to contain myself! Sorry but I really don't see the use of ordering food, seeing it's not correct, eating it anyway and then go back complaining. No wonder they got a blank look. If I was working there I'd be like, what would you like me to do? Say sorry? Give you a new burger? exaaaactly!! not only does the guy waste so much time explaining, in the end he ALREADY ate the burger hours ago!?? I cannot comprehend who would do this and have the audacity to insist on a new burger when he already ate it!! If I was the employee I would give him a slice of cheese and be done with it.

thanks Muse, that's what I wanted to know.. I was just curious because I have found the "sales" in Dubai are typically hit or miss anyways, meaning sometimes its a true sale and other times the word is just used as a marketing tool. So with the Outlet Mall, I just wondered if its really a through and through outlet shopping mall or what exactly..

I've done San Francisco and Vegas in one trip before and its totally doable - must see the following: San Francisco: Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, ride cable cars (all over city), Ghirardelli's chocolate factory Las Vegas: plan for tons of time on the strip and use the monorail, saves on walking! must see Paris, the Venetian, MGM Grand, Luxor, Caesar's, Bellagio, only to name a few - if you've never been, these are more than just casinos or hotels, its like a full on experience

same here, I'm so surprised/relieved that so many people have this and not just me.. it was such a big part of my life when I was younger and now only happens every once in a while.. but I am intrigued by the stories of "what" you guys have seen during the episodes. for me, like I said I originally thought it was a "jinn" because I would hear whispers and laughter in my ear, felt a strong presence in the room (but not necessarily evil, more like a prankster) and could somehow sense he was communicating with me, but without words.. so it makes me wonder, is it possible that its the two combined-- the scientific explanation of sleep paralysis, but that also in this heightened state of awareness of being mentally awake while your body is still asleep, you can see / feel supernatural things that you wouldn't normally be aware of ? I wonder...

bring nothing but empty suitcases - be sure to hit walmart and target, and depending on where in the U.S. you are going, Old Navy, Marshall's, T.J. Maxx and Kohl's if you can find it, you will get truly amazing deals! clothes there are better quality and cheaper in price (stuff we've brought with us from america almost 2 years ago are still in better shape than the stuff we have bought here a couple of months ago!!) and if you are into brands, try to find an outlet mall, you will find ridiculous prices for awesome brands. God I need a trip back home badly!!

this used to happen to me all the time when I was a teenager in my parents' house and the episodes were extremely scary, and like you laurelm and marroosh, ppl always say its a jinn or other spirit/supernatural thing. then when I moved out of the house, it almost stopped altogether, which made me believe that's what it was. only this year I heard of sleep paralysis and read the articles and realize this is probably what I have too, just never knew. I've had a few episodes again here in Dubai but a lot less scary now that I know what they are..

well I think its probably much like everything else in Dubai, you have to do your homework .. I don't think any of us would send our child somewhere without fully checking out the facilities, meeting the staff, checking out ratios, etc. of course that goes without saying... plus, I think a good indicator is if the camp/camp organizers have been successful at running the same camps year after year in Dubai -- if there were problems I don't think they would be able to continue..

I work full time and don't have a maid, so I was counting on summer camp for my little guy -- please post back if anyone knows of any affordable holiday camps either in Dubai or Sharjah, I'm flexible at this point!

Why not the zoo? I think Al Ain Zoo has camels and I know for sure there is one that you can let your children ride (very briefly). Al Ain Zoo is probably the best in the UAE, the kids will love it. Also, Heritage Village in Dubai (next to the Shandagha Tunnel) has a section with pony rides and camel rides.
