Hi I just learned that the Universal Academy of Excellence has been renamed Oasis School. I can't remember where I looked at their web page. I have just googled it and it's not coming up. Just found it. Www.oasisschool.ae

Dear AV Do you get some support from groups like SFS? You have my utmost respect. Caring from one child with autism must be so challenging but to have to try to meet the needs of two very different boys must be impossible. His challenging behaviours are obviously an attempt to communicate something but what??? Does he have any functional means of communication (signs or pictures)? I think 7 years is very young to give up on an educational programme but maybe the programme needs a change of focus. Are they using the right motivators to get him to participate in the programme? I always think of that quote that says something like " if a child appears unable to learn we should assume that we have not, as yet, found the right way to teach them". Hoping you find another way to reach Ishaan.

There is a good shoe repair shop opposite Lulu's close to MOE. Sorry I can't remember the name of it, but that's where I'd try first.

Hi What year groups are you looking for? The early years are particular hard to find places for at the moment. How far behind academically would your 8 year old be? Are you set on them all going to the same school? There is a new mainstream school (it was previously a school for children with special needs) called the Universal Academy of Excellence. Look at www.theacademy.ae. It may be worth looking at and sounds more inclusive than many schools in the UAE. Sally mainstreaming still has a long way to go here. Having said that, you are in a strong position having 4 children!

Carrot top Unfortunately my sister has two children with scoliosis. They have both been treated by the Royal Orthopaedic hospital in London. Her eldest was diagnosed quite late and got v bad v quickly. He had surgery at 16. Her younger son was diagnosed earlier and has been treated with braces that he wears 22-23 hours a day and these appear to be working. My sister has done an enormous amount of research into this and I know would be more than happy to speak to you. Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with her. edited by plum2 on 13/10/2013

The camp ground that used to be at Turtle beach (we stayed there about 10 years ago) was no longer there when we visited in Jan 2012. Not sure whether they have built a new one since. Best to contact the Turtle beach info centre.

Mizpah Takapi, OT, and Sarah Booth, SLT, can see children at Repton School for assessment either individually or jointly. The children do not have to attend Repton. They will be on holiday from today for the half term/Eid week but back on the 20th. You can email [email protected]

Hi Tru Blu I have just put my kids into a new school that has just opened up in Jumeirah. It's called the Widad Learning Centre (the ministry says they are not allowed to call themselves a school even though that is what they are). They are having a maximum of 100 children and so far only have around half that. They go from KG upwards, my kids are in grades 2, 4 and 6 (and as of next year the school grades will go through to high school). This school is run by people who are trained psychologists and have a vested interest in the community surrounding us & educating children who are well equipped for life ahead. It's situated near Wellington Primary school on 77C street. Check out their website if you want more info: www.widadlearning.com. Jo Oz family, can you give us any idea of the fees at Widad Learning? The website certainly makes it sound like it is a centre for children with additional learning needs. Are you saying it is a school for all?

I would second Inspire Nursery. I can also recommend The Developing Child Centre in Umm Suqeim. Look at www.tdcc.ae You can also contact Kids First www.kidsfirst.ae. They have several SLTs that go out to offer services to schools and nurseries. You could ask which nurseries they visit. You should also start looking at schools as soon as you arrive as pressure on FS1 and FS2 places is very high at the moment. As far as I know the only schools that have SLTs on the staff are Repton (Sarah Booth) and Gems World Academy (Rathica Palavar).

I *think* they are talking about the one at Ras al Had....right by where the Turtle reserve is. It's certainly the only one I can think of that has facilities anyway. If you google Ras al Hadd, Turtle Beach, you should be able to come up with the name of it. I would say it would pay to book for Eid. There are fixed tent camps at Jebel Shams with facilities if you wanted to also break your trip there, and in Wahiba Sands. We're also camping for 6 nights, but carry our own shower etc. I'm not sure that you can pre get your visas for Oman, but it's straight forward for Ozzies. Go EARLY! And make sure you have your Oman car insurance. We have camped at the turtle beach several times in the past but the last time we went, Jan 2012, the campsite had disappeared. We arrived v late at night and the staff at the turtle place were happy for us to put up our tent overnight at the edge of the car park area and we used the turtle centre restrooms. If you are intending to to and see the turtles at the visitor centre over a holiday period it is advise able to book in advance.

24 Fitness in Al Quoz is a gym. You can pay 40 dhs a day to use the gym as a visitor. It has a great weights section for body builders. It doesn't look flash but is a nice friendly gym. It is v close to Sheikh Zayed Rd. you go over into Al Quoz at the Al Manara junction, down to the lights and turn left. Turn right at the building shaped like a ship and then take the first left.

You may find things a little cheaper at White Star Bookshop at the Beach Centre Mall, Jumeirah, they are very good for party supplies and costumes too and have quite a good selection of craft supplies as well. Worth a look. On the ground floor right hand side as you enter main entrance. White Star trading is the same company as Creative Minds on Umm Suqeim Rd so I guess the prices are going to be the same. I agree, they are expensive.

Are you sure all the electricity used was yours? Did you check the meter reading when you moved in? Sometimes money owing by a previous tenant gets added to your bill. It does sound a lot.

I believe this school is on the site of the old Safa school and has been under the current management since early in the last academic year. It is largely a school for children with milder special needs I think. Yes, this is the school that was St Andrews/BILD.

It is quite cheap to hire a car and a driver which is what we did. I think your list is doable. We did the same in about 10 days but we went down to Wadi Rum and Aqaba too. I would add Jerash to your list - amazing Roman remains. Lots to see and more still being uncovered.

While we are on the topic of Oman Insurance Cover, I had a question I hoped someone could answer. We are new to Dubai and our car insurances both include GCC cover including Oman. What is the Arabic letter of permission the OP refers to? Would having a certificate of insurance with you which states the territorial limits of the policy extend to cover Oman not be enough? This is the first I had heard that we would have to produce documentation. If someone could shed some light that would be appreciated The insurance company gave it to you with your policy papers by default. If you kept them together, you have it. We have never had any separate letter of permission but the general insurance document stating the territories covered (which you usually get in English and Arabic) has always been sufficient.

You generally need two years of work experience for an employer to be able to get you a visa. I'm sure you would need this to be considered for an expat package. Otherwise, if she came here and stayed with you I'm sure she would pick up relieving work which might give her a foot in the door, but probably only as a 'local hire'. Yes, you will need to get your DD's birth certificate attested so you can sponsor her. The school will just need a copy of her passport to verify DOB. If her father is not coming with you you may also need a letter from him giving his permission to be in Dubai with you. No, I haven't heard of any adults who needed their birth certificates attested.

Not sure where you live but there is a great bike shop that does excellent and speedy repairs in Motor City/Sports City. Coming from AR go over the lights by Spinneys and make the first U turn and park. It is in that little block right there that has Better Homes at the front. Sorry I can't remember what it's called.
