One is a rectangular folding table we use for camping but it is a decent size. The other is one of those white plastic outdoor oval tables with removeable legs. neither are overly attractive but with cloths on they are fine. <em>edited by plum2 on 24/02/2013</em>

Just make sure you get a firm quote. I was quoted 350 for a filling at Dr Michaels once. It clearly should have been 'from' 350 dhs. My filling was a root canal and ended up costing almost 10 times the original quote. I nearly died of shock and certainly wasn't prepared for that.

currently in a 2 bed in the Greens, service charge is paid for by the landlord so will be part of your rent, no separate cooling charge and DEWA is averaging about AED 1k a month 550 of which is the housing fee If the housing fee is 5% of the annual rent are we to understand that the cost of a 2 bedroom in the Greens is now 132K? That seems a lot. Just wondering.

You can go to Immigration and pay a sum for further month. It used to be 500 dhs but not sure now. Maybe someone else will know. Otherwise you can do a visa run and cross the border at Hatta (1 1/2 hours from Dubai) into Oman and return with a new stamp in your passport. If you post on EW while you are here there will more than likely be someone going to do this that you can get a ride with.

There are two schools which actually have speech-language therapists on staff, Repton and Gems World Academy. Kids First offer speech therapy at many schools on a visiting basis. Good Luck in your search.

It took us 2 hours to the border from AR. We had to get temporary insurance at the border for 2 out of the 3 cars in our party. Including that the border crossings took almost an hour in total. Then about 40 mins to drive to Khasab. So you'd have to leave pretty early for a 10am trip. We went up the day before and camped. My sister and family were all on visit visas and it cost then 50 dhs each (British passports) for Omani visas. Nothing for NZ passport holders. Maybe other posters with experience of other passports can add their info. @mk in Dubai. Not sure whether they have child life-jackets. It's a big flat area on the deck which is great for kids but you'd want to keep a hold on them really. It would be easy for them to go over the side!

JAPS is an excellent school. If you get offered places there I would grab them! I spoke to the Foremarke principal last week and he said the construction was on track. But who knows with all the licensing requirements etc. there can be unforeseen delays.

Here is the review as promised. Dolphin Khasab tours were excellent. I made the booking on-line via their website. Good directions on there for getting through RAK to the border. At the border you need to pay 35dhs each to exit the UAE, then head to the Oman border office. Those with British passports had to pay 50 dhs each (UAE residents and visitors). NZ passport holders are free, no forms needed. The tour company called the night before to check whether there were any vegetarians in our group. We got to the port about 9.30 and left about 9.45 (even though not scheduled to depart till 10am). It was 200 dhs for the day trip 10am to 4pm including lunch, soft drinks, water and fresh fruit. Lunch was pieces of cooked chicken, biriyani rice, a nice sauce, salad, bread and hummus. All very fresh and delicious. We saw LOADS of dolphins. Lots swimming alongside the boat, including babies which were so cute. The snorkelling was excellent and they had good gear on the boat, towels were also provided. They also had a hand held shower to rinse off once you got back on board. The boat was really comfy with carpets and cushions and the toilet on board was fine. It was fully shaded but they could pull back the roof shade if requested. Our skipper was Ahmed and he was a lovely guy. All in all a great day out! Highly recommended.

Thanks all. I looked at a recommendation on an old thread and booked with Dolphin Khasab Tours. It's still 200 dhs incl lunch so we shall see how it goes on Monday. I'll post a review once we're back.

No, not open yet. Construction at the foundations stage I think. Should be open in Sept for Nursery to year 1. Is going to be considerably more expensive than Repton I hear. The location is in the Dubaiotech Park, off Umm Suqeim Rd just before you get to Emirates Rd. <em>edited by plum2 on 15/02/2013</em>

The Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre is a not for profit school for children with special needs. They will definitely take the toys and books and maybe the clothes. They are between MOE and LULU's. 04 340 0005

Good services for children on the Autistic Spectrum are available in Dubai but they are costly. I am not sure which insurnace companies cover these services. Reputable services are provided by the Child Early Intervention Medical Centre www.childeimc.com and Stepping Stones www.steppingstonesca.com both in Healthcare City and by Reachout in Knowledge Village www.reachoutkv.com. Anyone is able to access government health services here providing you get a Government Health Card. It used to be 300 dhs but no idea of the current cost. You then pay a relatively small fee for out-patient appointments at your local health centre and they refer you to hospital services if necessary. We used this system for the first few years we were in Dubai until we got Health Insurance provided. It is a perfectly adequate service.

Kings is off next week as well, it was bliss this morning! Couldnt work out why JESS being on half term would have such an impact on saheel gate 1, given repton not off either - i think it must be GEMS DSO then that clogs up the traffic!!!! But for Gems DSO wouldn't most people go out of the other gate directly onto Emirates Rd?

There are a large number of British Currculum schools here in Dubai. Which year group specifically will you be looking for? Does your daughter turn 4 before the beginning of September? In which case you will be looking for a Reception place (called FS 2 in some schools). Places are hard to find for this year group. You need to apply now. Where will you or your DH be working? Then maybe we can advise on schools which are close by. Do you have a set budget for housing and/or schooling as that may dictate where you can look at living. There are several new schools opening in September which will be easier to get into. Foremarke Hall is one, a sister school to Repton. I think you can contact Repton for more information. Dr Michaels on al wasl thanks, called them, still a bit steep, but not to bad! Beware, the initial quote bears no resemblance to the final bill. I had asked about the range of prices for a filling. I was unaware that a root canal filling was a different cost (like 4 times the price) plus add ons for emergency appointment etc (if you book several days in advance why is that still considered an emergency?). It was, as he kept telling me, a very simple job over 2 appointments but the bill was thousands.

Hi I (in a rash moment) bought a Cobone deal for a folding table. It was delivered OK and the concept is great. Sadly one of my table legs is bent so it doesn't sit stable on the floor. I sent Cobone a message but they referred me to the supplier. One of their two mobile numbers is not valid. The other one they don't answer and they haven't replied to my text messages. Who is it I contact at the municipality to complain? TIA

I think you could use your british Passport to enter Thailand. You would have the Irish one with you so could alwasy show them if they asked. It is my understanding that you can enter your home country even on an expired passport. Just the fact that you are entitled to a passport means that they would let you in.

You need to think very long term before pushing your child ahead into a year group to which she doesn't really belong. My DS has a birthday on 12th Sept. When we moved here from a country with a different school year I also wanted to push him ahead but the school wouldn't take him. I am so glad now that they didn't as socially he would not have been as mature as his peers as a teenager. He is now about to leave school and has done really well always being one of the oldest in his year.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. You could now be contacting schools due to open in September. I am sure most existing schools will already have enough children on their waiting lists to fill any spaces that might arise, but then many might have found alternative schools by then. I guess you could wait and take the chance of something coming up at a more established school but then you could end up with no school place.

There are quite a few new schools opening in September and that is always a good time to get any children with any degree of special needs in to school as they often just need to fill their spaces. Foremarke hall is one (run by the same people that run Repton) but there are others. Now that JC isn't moving isn't that school going to be a new primary-secondary? or just secondary? I think Victory heights has spaces.

Any idea how much the Orthotics at Up & Running cost? Custom made orthotics at Up and Running cost 2500dhs. I also had the bio mechanical running analysis done there. I suffered really badly with plantar fasciitis last year and since I've had the orthotics my feet have been fine. I just keep them in my running shoes and try not to walk around the house barefoot too much.
